Solar-powered cars cross finish line in South Africa's 'most extreme' solar car race

After 8 days driving thousands of kilometers in South Africa, from Secunda to Cape Town, thirteen solar cars built by teams from across the world cross the finish line of an event described by its organizer as the 'the most extreme solar challenge in the world.' The event, Sasol Solar Challenge, is held every two years in South Africa.

00:00We are home!
00:30We are in the Church of Giza
00:34and we are about to see the Ritz-Carlton
00:38and the Ritz-Carlton Museum.
00:45The Ritz-Carlton Museum is a large,
00:49multi-purpose museum
00:53that features a variety of historical monuments
00:57These teams behind me have built these vehicles, they've designed them, and they've come here
01:04to test them.
01:05And what they do after this is take all that information, that data, and it allows us to
01:09keep moving forward.
01:10So every two years we take a quantum step forward.
01:12This is a crucible, this is the hardest test that's out there, it is the most extreme solar
01:17challenge in the world, and what comes out of this is technology that drives the rest
01:21of humanity forward.
01:22Very, very stoked, I'm very happy.
01:25Because actually, this car, we actually drove all the way from Senkunda, Bumalang, all the
01:32way to here.
01:34Many people didn't believe us, like when I showed them the pictures when we were still
01:37practicing and stuff, that this car, Josie, it will fall off, and I'm telling them guys,
01:44this car has shocks, this car has a handbrake, this car has a steering wheel, it's an automatic,
01:49it's a full car, just that it uses the sun, no water, no oil, no petrol.
01:53I think looking at solar energy generally, it's not about replacing only what you're
02:00utilizing.
02:01First of all, you need to save on the energy that you use.
02:04So with solar vehicles and even solar at home, it's no point you're putting a lot of money
02:09to buy a solar system for something that needs a lot of energy.
02:15First try to optimize your energy usage, either being at your home or your solar vehicle.
02:20We learned that it's not easy to build a solar car, but it can be done.
02:25If we as students can do it, I think everyone can do it.
02:29There's a lot of things to do.
02:34If you want to create a renewable future, you still have a lot of work to do, but we
02:38believe in ourselves and that it's possible to do it.
