This video shows the felling of Douglass trees since these are very near to the fence and are growing too big.
The felling is done using a Stihl MS 261 CM chainsaw together with the help of Kubota B2261 Compact Tractor.

00:00Hi everyone, Sjef from Outdoors in the Low Countries.
00:02Now behind me you see a Douglas tree which is very close to the fence.
00:05Behind the fence there is corn and it's becoming very very large as you can see.
00:11Now I don't mind to have a very large tree in the middle of the field but not so much to the edge.
00:15Now there are a few of them very near to the fence and I want to cut them down.
00:20Now those trees are very close to the fence and I'm not going to take any risk there
00:24that they fall in the wrong direction or not the way I want it.
00:27So I'm going to use a rope at some level to get some tension onto it with the Kubota
00:33and then tear the whole thing down.
00:36And then a couple of times because there are more than one like three or four.
00:40So let's get going.
00:57The recovery has arrived so let's hook it up.
01:27Just to make sure I can easily untie it I will put in this beam.
01:36This old screwdriver I should say.
01:38So I can simply untie it afterwards.
01:43Now before I will do any cutting I first want to do a test run
01:47with the tractor to see if I can create any tension on the tree.
01:50Better to see now that something is wrong than when the tree is already let's say on the tip of falling.
01:57So there's now already quite some tension on the tree
02:18so now release the cord again do some cutting and then I can pull it back.
03:27So nice and smooth cut no problem there.
03:44I didn't even need to pull the tractor back.
03:46It was already going.
03:48The only thing is that next time I before I start making the joint
03:51I should think of the camera.
03:52I completely forgot the camera was still running.
03:54But happily there's no damage there so no problem.
04:00So one down a couple more to go.
04:04Here you can also see that I was already too far with the saw
04:07and this was a nice joint nice hinge there was also a nice hinge
04:12but apparently I was already here with the saw so I was already too far.
04:16That's also why it went a little bit earlier than I thought.
04:46So when I pulled it was clear that the tree was already coming a little bit this way.
04:50So that's good so I can now cut in the hinges and then pull it in this direction
04:55or it falls directly like the other one but I hope this time I can pull it down.
04:59We'll see as long as it falls in this direction everything is fine.
05:16So
06:16here you can see I left the hinge much larger than with the other one
06:29and I used the tractor to pull it over.
06:33So there was no risk at all in going it the other way.
06:37So in general a nice cut.
06:39A little bit thicker here than here but it's still well it's not that much there a little bit
06:47but okay.
06:51Went well.
06:53Very near from here there's a very small Douglas which I'm also going to take down
06:56and then clean the whole thing up which is most of the work by the way but yeah
07:01that's a part of it.
07:04Nice wood smells great as well Douglas.
07:09And this way it's very easy to untighten that.
07:11You just take out the screwdriver so there's now some play on the rope
07:18and the only thing you need to do is just push a little and
07:25it's gone.
07:26So always use a screwdriver which I always have in the back of the Kubota
07:31to do this type of thing and you see it works quite well.
07:35Now the third one is a smaller one but even here when this one goes in that direction
07:40in the wrong direction over the fence still I have an issue.
07:43So I'm not going to take any risk just use the rope technique and easy put it back.
07:48No problem at all.
08:04So
08:35we gave it a small cut.
08:37It is still quite a large hinge but now it's tractor time and to be honest it's
08:44also very nice to see a tree falling down because you're pulling it down with the Kubota
08:49so it's also a little bit of fun.
09:04So
09:20and also the tree side in most cases it's very easy to untie the knot.
09:25Well in this case there was also not a lot of pull force required of course but
09:29also here very easy to remove it.
09:32So a nice result.
09:34Hinge is about this thick.
09:37No problem for the Kubota to pull it over.
09:39No risk at all that it falls to the wrong side.
09:42This is great.
09:42Both are lying here now.
09:44So next step is now to clean them up and remove the wood which is most of the work by the way.
09:50But yeah that's part of the job.
09:53So let's start.
10:01Now completely gassed up again and oiled up.
10:05So next step is now to clean the trees all the way to the trunk.
10:08So the thicker parts I will use for firewood.
10:11Thinner ones I all piled up into a large pile and that's good for the
10:16insects and for the small lizards and hedgehogs and other animals.
10:31So cleaning up these branches really goes very fast with what you call in Dutch a kubmes.
10:57Not sure what the English translation is machete I think.
11:01So it's easy to clean out the somewhat thicker branches until you are at the part where you say
11:06hey this is thin enough to throw away and then you have some wood for the stove.
11:14And then do that branch by branch.
11:16And of course you have to be careful not to hit your fingers.
11:31So here I'm at the part where I say okay this is thin enough.
11:43So hit it one side.
11:45Thinner parts then already are gone.
11:48Then also the other side and clean.
11:58Now it's time to take the small branches away.
12:01Put them in the large pile in the forest.
12:03Coming back for the next ones.
12:24So use anchor seal to prevent splitting of the end grain because of drying out of the wood.
12:28Now I want to use this as timber because it's Douglas which is very nice
12:33wood with very nice flames in it.
12:58So
13:29I lowered the stump to make sure it's quite low towards the ground.
13:36Get a nice flat stump.
13:37I will not remove it so there's no need to get the rhino ripper here
13:41because it's going to be overgrown anyway with trees.
13:44I want to have different type of trees not the Douglas tree which becomes very very large which
13:49I was already doing that.
13:50So I can now plant around different type of trees and overgrow this one.
13:54So all four Douglas trees have been cut down.
13:57No problem at all.
13:58There's never any risk that it went over the wrong side of the fence.
14:02So that's a good thing and the Kubota helped a lot to make sure that didn't happen.
14:07The MS-261 did a very good job in cutting it all down.
14:10There was no need to go to the MS-362 which is always in standby when it's required.
14:16But these size of trees are easily done with the MS-261.
14:20It was close too that I could reach it with the saw in one go but of course
14:26fire the other side no problem there.
14:28So all the branches and all the other small stuff has been cleaned away
14:31using the Kubota.
14:33That helped a lot and the wood will be used to create timber that I will show you in another video.
14:38So we hope you enjoyed the video.
14:40Thanks for watching and hope to see you next time here in the Lookout.
