00:00Contract medical officers who quit the health service have reportedly snubbed the government's
00:07offer of interim three-year contracts pending permanent positions. A source said the response,
00:13especially from those who left the service, was poor and the number of applicants for
00:18the interim contracts was generally below expectations. The interim contract offer
00:24made in early July for 3,200 doctors, 450 dentists and 300 pharmacists closed on July 31st.
00:33The health ministry said the scheme would be in place until a permanent solution is found.
00:38The source said many officers felt it was meaningless to return to being at the mercy
00:43of ministry officials while waiting to be considered for permanent positions.
00:48He said many contract doctors had quit because of the long wait for permanent posts
00:52and another uncertain three-year wait was no lure for them to rejoin the government service.
00:58One contract doctor called the new scheme a mere stopgap measure, adding that the government must
01:04offer something more substantial such as permanent placements if they truly need the officers.
