After dominating the landscape of the English East Midlands for nearly 60 years, the UK's last coal-fired power plant in Ratcliffe-on-Soar is to close at the end of the month, with some locals sad to see it go. The closure comes after the new Labour government launched its flagship green energy plan.

00:00I live in Long Eaton.
00:26Well it's such a shame really when it's been here for such a long time, you know, it's
00:30like part of the family isn't it and it's just a shame but I've seen it built and see
00:35it take it down.
01:01It just makes me wonder how we've had all these power stations and now all of a sudden
01:06we're going to be able to cope without them.
01:09I just wonder when we get at peak times whether we'll need some more power from somewhere.
01:15I don't know where we'll come from but yeah, just a bit worrying really.
01:37For me, especially when I'm coming home from London or when I'm coming home from anywhere
01:42up north, it's one of the places where it's like you can recognise it from when you're
01:46coming home and you're like oh I'm not too far from home.
01:49It's like a landmark really, but yeah and also especially because my dad works there
01:56and obviously he's going to have to find another job.
