00:00An estimated 700 Lebanese people have been killed in only a week as fighting between
00:06Israel and Hezbollah escalates.
00:15Nearly 700 people have been killed in Lebanon this week as fighting between Israel and Hezbollah
00:20escalates according to the Lebanese health ministry.
00:25Israel has dramatically escalated strikes in that time, saying it is targeting Hezbollah's
00:30military capacities and senior Hezbollah commanders.
00:34Top Israeli officials have threatened to repeat the destruction of Gaza in Lebanon if Hezbollah
00:39attacks continue.
00:41Incoming fire from Lebanon into Israel continued on Friday with one man suffering wounds from
00:47shrapnel.
00:48More than 200,000 people have been displaced in Lebanon since the war in Gaza began, according
00:54to the International Organization for Migration.
00:58The US, France and other allies jointly called for a 21-day ceasefire.
01:03However, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu said Israel is striking Hezbollah with full
01:08force and won't stop until its goals are achieved.
01:15US Vice President Kamala Harris has slammed suggestions that Kiev should cede territory
01:20for the sake of peace with Moscow.
01:23Speaking in Washington, Harris unleashed the criticism of Donald Trump's controversial
01:28push for Ukraine to quickly cut a deal to end the war.
01:32These proposals are the same of those of Putin.
01:38And let us be clear, they are not proposals for peace.
01:43Instead, they are proposals for surrender, which is dangerous and unacceptable.
01:51Trump has criticized US assistance for Ukraine, praised Russian President Vladimir Putin and
01:56faulted Zelensky for the ongoing bloodshed.
02:00But he rejected Harris' criticisms and insisted that he only wants to stop the horror show
02:05that's gone on.
02:07At the presser with Harris, Zelensky said a lasting and just peace was a top priority
02:12for Ukraine.
02:14Zelensky was in Washington to present the White House and Congress with his plans for
02:18reaching an endgame in the war by improving Ukraine's chances on the battlefield.
02:24And addressing the UN General Assembly on Thursday, EU Council President Charles Michel
02:29said the bloc would support Ukraine for as long as necessary.
02:33He also urged China to reconsider its support for Russia and use its influence to ensure
02:38that the United Nations Charter is respected.
02:46Since the 2006 Lebanon war, the UNIFIL mission has never witnessed a more tense situation.
02:52Established in 1978, its 10,000 peacekeepers from 50 countries have been regularly patrolling
02:58along the Blue Line, a UN-run border between Lebanon and Israel, while engaging in efforts
03:03to de-escalate tensions between the two sides.
03:06Since Israel launched a new wave of attacks across Lebanon, hitting what it called Hezbollah's
03:11targets, over 600 people have been killed, with around 90,000 newly displaced in the
03:16country.
03:41Israel says it is preparing for a ground invasion.
04:12On Wednesday, Hezbollah said it had targeted the Mossad headquarters with a missile fired
04:23toward Tel Aviv, which was later intercepted.
04:26Meanwhile, the US and France called for a 21-day ceasefire.
04:31Israel rejected the proposal, saying it will continue to fight against Hezbollah.
04:41It is a very serious situation.
04:48The solution is the one we have been talking about for a long time, a solution that both
04:55countries have indicated in a different way, but the implementation of the 17-0-1 resolution,
05:02our resolution, which is the same resolution that made sure that the war in 2006 would
05:10end.
05:13Uncertainty on both sides has been there for over 10 months, but people have never been
05:18so concerned as they are now at the prospect that a full-out war could become a reality.
05:23George Orlandi for Euronews in Rome.
05:31Denmark's justice minister has visited a prison in Kosovo where his country intends to send
05:36up to 300 inmates to ease overcrowding in the Danish prison system.
05:41Speaking alongside his Kosovan counterpart Albelina Hadjo, Peter Hummelgaard praised
05:46what he called the fruitful cooperation between the two countries.
05:51Now we have come to Kosovo in a need of help, in use of excess capacity in the Kosovarian
06:00prison and detention facilities, and that is a very big help for Denmark in a time where
06:07we have a very, very pressured prison and probation services in Denmark.
06:14This visit here marks the practical implementation of the project, and there is no doubt that
06:21we would have liked to have seen that started earlier, but nevertheless we are happy that
06:27we are at this phase now.
06:30The deal, which was originally signed in 2021, only became a treaty earlier this year when
06:35it was approved by Kosovo's parliament.
06:38It will see Pristina lease 300 cells in the Jilan prison to Copenhagen, which will be
06:43responsible for modernization work to bring the facility in line with Danish standards.
06:48The deal is worth 15 million euros per year to Kosovo.
06:53But the decision to move inmates to the Kosovo prison has raised concerns among human rights groups.
07:04The 12-week legal limit for abortion in Belgium leads more than 300 women a year to travel
07:10to the Netherlands to terminate their pregnancies, according to pro-choice associations.
07:15The legislation, unchanged since 1990, also obliges a six-day reflection period, which
07:22for the centers responsible for carrying out abortions, is incompatible with the reality
07:27of many women.
07:29We stopped at 12 weeks of pregnancy, but we have people who unfortunately exceed this
07:36deadline for a lot of reasons, and not because they want to delay asking for an abortion,
07:41as we sometimes hear.
07:43And then there is this completely arbitrary rule, which is the delay of reflection.
07:48So the woman who makes her request today has to wait six days before she can have an
07:53abortion, whereas maybe she has already reflected for 15 days before contacting us, or others
07:58will have done their pregnancy test this morning and then contact us.
08:02So what we ask is this flexibility to be able to adapt to each situation and to be able
08:06to respond positively to each situation.
08:08Having to travel to another country to have an abortion is a reality for many within the
08:13European Union, due to the legislation of different member states.
08:18Abortion time limits vary from 10 weeks in Portugal to 24 weeks in the Netherlands.
08:23More than half have set this limit at 12 weeks.
08:26In Malta and Poland, it is only legal if the mother's life is in danger.
08:31In fact, among countries that have more restrictive legislation, the percentage of abortions is
08:38higher than in those countries that have a free, free and safe access to abortion.
08:49Therefore, we are not talking about abortion yes, abortion no.
08:53We are talking about safe abortion or unsafe abortion, because the women who decide to
08:58abort under different circumstances will continue to do so, because they have done it throughout
09:05history and throughout the world.
09:10The European Parliament voted to include access to abortion in the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights.
09:16However, it was not binding, as health issues are considered part of each country's legislative remit.
09:26As climate change disrupts lives and farming across Europe, there's a gradual cultural shift.
09:33With restaurants now reimagining menus to reduce food miles and highlight local produce.
09:40These peppers here, they're from Tangmere peppers just outside of Chichester.
09:45These carrots here, absolutely beautiful.
09:48This London restaurant chain has led the local sourcing shift in the UK, solely focusing
09:53on seasonal foods, those harvested at their peak freshness from within a 50 mile radius.
10:00We find it very difficult to think anything outside of know your farmer, taste it in the
10:07field and bring it into the restaurant group.
10:10These are peaches grown in Kent under plastic tunnels.
10:14Their approach reflects a broader trend, with 70% of European consumers now expressing a
10:21preference for locally sourced food.
10:24Now it's even more essential that we're sustainably minded, we're sourcing from the right suppliers
10:30and we're using it in season.
10:33Normally we'd harvest every three days.
10:35Forty miles from central London, Gerard Vonk is the Dutch manager of Tangmere Airfield
10:41Nursery, a state-of-the-art controlled environment farm, growing non-native food in an eco-friendly way.
10:48The produce is over here, whether it's a pepper, a tomato, a strawberry or a courgette.
10:55These innovative farming techniques enable year-round cultivation of crops, significantly
11:00reducing reliance on imports.
11:03Local farming cuts transportation emissions by up to 40%, aligning with the EU's goal
11:09of decreasing carbon footprints throughout the food supply chain.
11:13By casting our vote on the three meals a day that we eat, we can be part of that solution.
11:21With 80% of Europe's population expected to live in cities by 2025, sourcing food locally
11:29is crucial if countries are to meet their sustainability targets and ensure food security
11:37for urban populations.
