00:00Let's protect ourselves at all times. Right now, we're going to call in on the brown, right here on the green. Tap it up, let's go to work.
00:08The underdog, Sula Sagawa. He became a huge deal after his victory over Ruben Villa, the number one ranked fighter by the WBO.
00:18And tonight, he has a chance to take out the WBA number one in Bruce Chushu Carrington.
00:24And how big is Sula Sagawa back home?
00:28That everyone is watching this ESPN broadcast because ESPN made it possible for the Ugandan TV to have this broadcast for free.
00:37And for Chushu Carrington, Tim, this is another test against a fighter who is relentless, is southpaw, and in theory, is supposed to test the metal of the 12-0, 8 knockout New Yorker.
00:56And Sagawa is a natural right-hander. His strong hand is up front. Nice right hand right there from Chushu, got his attention.
01:05A little off balance from Sagawa, but what makes Sagawa so dangerous is his punch output.
01:11He's been battle tested, he has art, throws a lot of volume, can punch a little bit as well, he's fearless.
01:21Chushu's going to have to think and be on his P's and Q's tonight because Sagawa is here to take him out.
01:30He's proven what he can do at the top level against a fighter like Ruben Villa whose only professional loss was to Emmanuel Navarrete when he was a buzzsaw at 126 pounds.
01:42Nice straight left from Sagawa.
01:45Partially blocked by Chushu, however, I love the intent. Sagawa not spooked at all by what's in front of him.
01:52He told us in the fighter meetings, he said, I know his weakness. He said his weakness is that he always brings his head back to the middle.
02:02He said, I'm going to have an uppercut or a straight left hand right down the middle that's going to hurt Chushu.
02:07He believes that he's going to knock him out tonight, people. That's how confident he is.
02:13And just to put things in perspective, everything that's been going on and we detailed in the lead up to this fight, the man you see in the red corner is Kay Kuroma.
02:22He is Bruce Chushu Carrington's trainer, so he had to settle himself down, get himself over to Chushu's locker room and make sure that nothing that happened outside of this fight affected the New York fighter.
02:38Nice left there from Carrington.
02:40Punch it out. Punch it out.
02:46Neither man is trying to give an inch. Even in close quarters like there, you saw a lot of wrestling, tussling.
02:52Each man trying to land a shot. One hand is free, they're looking to work with the opposite hand.
02:57Punch it out. Punch it out. Hands are free. Punch it out.
03:02If you were watching our broadcast prior to us moving from ESPN Plus to ESPN2, you heard the story of Chushu Carrington.
03:11And if you haven't, let me introduce you to a young man who has been affected by gun violence in his life, in his neighborhood, in his family.
03:20But he's been able to overcome and be forged into a great fighter.
03:25I grew up in Brownsville, Brooklyn, and you see people get killed, robbed, all that type of stuff.
03:34Who is Michael Hayden?
03:36My older brother. He was four years older than me.
03:39Did you think you were going to lose him?
03:41Not like the way we did.
03:44As you can see there, Chushu comes from the Tilden Projects in Brownsville, Brooklyn, where in mother life I spent a fair amount of time covering homicides.
03:54Inevitably you forget the devastation each case causes.
03:57Chushu did not because he couldn't.
03:59His brother's death didn't make him a fighter, but it did get him to where he is tonight at the precipice of a world title shot.
04:09But at the end, Tim, every fighter has a dream.
04:13Chushu dreams of reaching greatness as an undefeated fighter, becoming world champion.
04:18But so does Sula Sagawa, who dreams of pulling off another upset, derailing another fighter's dream.
04:26That's the reality.
04:28These are the most dangerous fights in a young fighter's career, is the Sagawas in the world.
04:34Chushu's finding out that Sagawa is a little bit more technical than he thought he was.
04:38He thought he was just a come forward, let your hands go type of fighter.
04:41Sagawa can box also, as you can see.
04:45Now Sagawa does have a record of 17-4-1 with one no contest, six knockouts.
04:50But his four losses, Tim, against undefeated opponents, 45-0 combined record.
04:55So he doesn't give it up easy.
04:57No, he doesn't give it up easy, but at the same time, he's not giving up.
05:01No, he doesn't give it up easy, but at the same time, you've got to understand that he's been in their backyard.
05:06And a lot of the time, he doesn't get the decision.
05:09He wins the fight, he doesn't get the decision.
05:12And it's guys like Jermaine Ortiz, Abraham Noah, nice left hook there.
05:15He heard him.
05:16And we'll see how Chushu deals with this combination.
05:20Chushu was buzzed for a split second.
05:24His conditioning held him up.
05:26Tonight he's going to be tested.
05:29I told you guys through the lead-up of this fight, Sagawa is something you don't want to play with.
05:33Chushu has to be ready for this.
05:37Tim, Sagawa's playing with house money.
05:40He's not supposed to be here.
05:43Yet, in his heart, he knows that he belongs.
05:52Chushu still trying to find his legs underneath him as Sagawa continues to pressure.
05:56Not the relentless pressure he used against Ruben Villa, a smarter pressure.
06:00Exactly. Technical pressure.
06:03Body work there from Chushu.
06:07Nice counter combination from Chushu, but Sagawa has something coming back.
06:12And that was the same thing in the Villa fight.
06:15Sagawa always answered every single call.
06:18That's what smart fighters do.
06:21That's what experienced fighters do.
06:23If you get hit with a shot, you want to get it right back.
06:27You understand that the judges are looking at that.
06:30And that's what you see from Sagawa.
06:32Anytime Chushu lets his hands go, Sagawa answers the call.
06:42Sagawa trying to set up that overhand left.
06:45And Carrington trying to set up that straight right.
06:48Good left hook there from Chushu.
06:54Nice double right hand from Chushu Carrington as Sagawa looks so calm in there.
07:03Calm, poised, underneath himself.
07:06But again, Chushu likes to take his time.
07:09He likes to have his fighters blow some steam before he actually starts to put on his attack.
07:14And now his defense is a lot sharper, making Sagawa miss.
07:17But I can tell you this, if he's expecting Sagawa to get tired, he's not going to get tired.
07:23He's not going to fade.
07:26And especially because he hasn't been able to go to the body.
07:52Send those pigs in, what are we running with today?
07:54You already know.

08:22Good News travels fast, literally.
08:53Really prepares Sagawa for this moment.
08:55And Carrington is now taking a big step up in competition.
09:02See that?
09:031-2 from Sagawa, Carrington pairing it well.
09:06Yeah, Carrington is going to have to get in his bag tonight.
09:08We're going to see something we haven't seen.
09:11Because Sagawa is very composed, under control, understands, has a game plan.
09:17And as long as the fight is being set at this pace, he's comfortable.
09:21Shushu's going to have to do something.
09:23I know it's early right now, but those first two rounds are too close.
09:27And I gave those first two rounds to Sagawa.
09:30Yeah, and there's Xander Zayas on the left of your screen.
09:33He's undefeated in 19 professional fights.
09:36He's also stepping up against 27-fight veteran Damian Sosa.
09:40Good counter.
09:41A man who knows how to throw 85-plus punches per round, Sosa.
09:47So that is a puzzle that, as of yet, Xander Zayas has not been able to solve.
09:53And that'll be the question for our co-feature tonight.
09:56And it all leads us to Sandy Ryan defending her WBO welterweight title against Michaela Mayer.
10:04Looks like Shushu's starting to get into rhythm now.
10:07He's finally found the rhythm of Sagawa.
10:10He's starting to counter after Sagawa punched.
10:13Now he's getting physical on the inside, he's shorting up his shots.
10:18Now that's a difference between Shushu and a lot of young fighters.
10:21There it is, the counters.
10:22He is a fighter who can switch it up.
10:24Yes, he can reach it.
10:25That's what we're seeing here.
10:26He's starting to read Sagawa.
10:30And now the question is, what answer does Sagawa have to Carrington's adjustment?
10:39You just gotta look at the eyes of Shushu.
10:41That's a very important thing.
10:43Look at the eyes.
10:44The calmness that he has inside the ring.
10:46When things aren't even going well, like he wanted to, he's staying composed.
10:50Now things are starting to open up, he's starting to see things now.
10:53A little bit clearer.
10:55Sagawa still calm, coming forward, being aggressive.
10:58But you see the counters right there.
11:00He's looking for those opportunities.
11:01Now he's found a pattern in the system of Sagawa.
11:04And now he's got Sagawa second-guessing himself.
11:08Before he throws the punches like he does there.
11:10Nice counter right once again from Carrington.
11:13As he catches Sagawa coming in.
11:16Sagawa's physically strong.
11:17My goodness, he's strong.
11:19Shushu's finding that out.
11:20He's tossing and turning and shifting Shushu on the inside.
11:45That's the play.
11:46Run it.
11:47And I'll see y'all tonight.
11:49Might have to run that.
11:54I told y'all to run that.

12:40Round 4 of a scheduled 10-round fight.
12:43Bruce Shushu Carrington in the brown trunks turned in white and orange.
12:49Taking on Sula Sagawa in green and black.
12:53And so far, Tim, it's what we expected.
12:55A test from Sula Sagawa against the undefeated Bruce Carrington.
13:02It's a chess match right now.
13:03Technical battle.
13:04Positioning.
13:05A battle for positioning.
13:06That's usually what it is with southpaw versus orthodox fighters.
13:10The pace has slowed down a bit.
13:13Because that lead hand.
13:14Those lead hands.
13:15You see how they're coming together.
13:16The jousting battle.
13:17Trying to get in position to be able to land your jab.
13:20To be able to land that backhand.
13:22As you see Sagawa leans in with his.
13:24Just off the mark.
13:28Sagawa ranked WBC number 3.
13:31WBO number 9 in the world after that upset victory over Ruben Villa.
13:35Last time out on top-ranked boxing on ESPN on July 13th.
13:41So he understands what's at stake for his career.
13:45If he can pull off an upset over a hometown fighter.
13:48Who's undefeated like Carrington.
13:50But he's got to deal with those right hands.
13:52Whether it's to the body or to the head.
13:54And it looks like the body is more effective for Carrington.
14:03Things starting to heat up.
14:04And Carrington walking down Sagawa.
14:07But then there's that answer.
14:09And Sagawa says, yeah, let's make it a fight.
14:13Carrington believes he found the key.
14:15It's the body of Sagawa.
14:19He seemed to can't miss with that right.
14:21Almost like a shovel body shot.
14:24Digging underneath.
14:27And Tim, the interesting thing is.
14:28After the second round in the corner of Sagawa.
14:31It was Randolph Kennedy celebrating.
14:33Saying, look man.
14:34We keep digging to the body.
14:35We're going to get this kid.
14:36And all of a sudden, said kid.
14:38Is turning things around with the same strategy.
14:41Shushu is extremely smart.
14:42Very intelligent fighter.
14:44He found out and understood what Sagawa was trying to do.
14:48And he's using his own game plan against him.
14:53You could hear Shushu being chanted in the stands in the USA.
14:59Shushu now, he's picking up the tempo now.
15:02Feeling comfortable with the power.
15:05Now he's understanding his distance.
15:06He's starting to see him.
15:09Eventually he's going to start setting traps.
15:13On Sagawa.
15:14Where he's going to exit.
15:15He's going to punch where he's at.
15:16Nice feint and the jab.
15:18The up jab.
15:19Yeah, but he stepped in.
15:20That first step was just an illusion.
15:22The second shot.
15:24That second jab is what he really wanted.
15:26There it is again.
15:27Footwork.
15:28Feint.
15:29Feint.
15:30Foot feints right there.
15:31To get him in position.
15:32Now you're starting to see.
15:33He's getting in his bag now.
15:35He is.
15:36Now they're playing around, toying around.
15:44What are you doing?
15:45Yo Sean, put him on game.

16:16Did you get pepperoni?
16:17I want Italian sausage.

16:21It's a three-meat treat.
16:22It's got all those delicious toppings.
16:24Come on.
16:25Bacon?
16:26Pepperoni?
16:27Italian sausage?

16:40Pizza, pizza.
16:42Inside the theater at MSG through four rounds.
16:45Starting round five, Mark Regal.
16:47What's your scorecard look like?
16:4938-38, two rounds apiece.
16:52I see Xu Xu starting to make adjustments.
16:55But Sagawa is the most thankless kind of opponent.
16:59He converted southpaw with nothing to lose.
17:01You can see how much confidence he gained his last time out in beating formerly number one ranked Ruben Villa.
17:10Absolutely.
17:12These are the type of fights, the type of wins, Tim, that not only change your career, but they change your outlook on yourself.
17:19Absolutely.
17:20It does.
17:21It builds your confidence up as a fighter.
17:23I always tell fighters all the time, you're only as good as your confidence.
17:26However, I'll say this.
17:28Early on, Sagawa wasn't really reacting to the feints of Xu Xu.
17:33The fact that Xu Xu now has advanced and got some offense, now you see Sagawa reacting to the feints.
17:41So in that last round when you saw those foot feints, Sagawa was reacting.
17:45Xu Xu was getting in position and was able to line up some shots.
17:48Particularly the right hand to the body.
17:50Earlier on it was Sagawa pushing Xu Xu around.
17:53In that series, you see how he used his forearm to keep Sagawa at bay.
17:58Kind of saying, alright, the little kid's gone.
18:00It's a man's game now.
18:02Xu Xu's extremely physical, especially on the inside.
18:06Again, he likes to control his opponents.
18:10I always say all the time, when you're able to place your hands, either on the guards, on the shoulders,
18:18Go back and watch George Foreman.
18:20The way he was able to manipulate the balance of his opposition.
18:24You have control of your opponent.
18:27And you can position him where you want him to be.
18:30To be able to land your offense.
18:32So Xu Xu's really good at manipulation.
18:36Eventually you're going to see him start closing the gap a little bit more.
18:39Little by little each round.
18:42And now he's starting to get in his groove now.
18:44Yeah, but you see Sagawa answering.
18:47This is a good round for Sagawa as well, after a couple of rounds that went Carrington's way.
18:52But now it's, you want a shot to the body, here comes a shot to the body.
19:01Look for the pull right hand.
19:03Xu Xu's going to appear to be in punching range, and he's going to pull.
19:07That was attempted right there.
19:09Pulled his body back out of range.
19:12Kind of shifted into that right hand.
19:14A looping right hand at that.
19:21That's one of his signature punches.
19:22That's where he produces knockouts with that shot.
19:25That move.
19:27Comes in behind the high guard and Sagawa punches at the gloves and then over the top.
19:35Xu Xu trying to suffocate Sagawa.
19:36That's what he's trying to do.
19:37He's trying to get him to work and he's looking for opportunities.
19:39There it is.
19:40Getting the offense off.
19:42Nice shot by Sagawa.
19:45This is good stuff.
19:46Send those pigs in.

20:4021-1 with 13 knockouts.
20:42Having a little fun here at the Theater at MSG with his father, Ciofimo Lopez.
20:50Yes, what's up?
20:51All Brooklyn.
20:53Can't wait to see him back in the ring.
20:55We saw three young junior lightweights in action, or junior welterweights in action earlier today.
21:03Polanco really impressed on our undercard.
21:06And you see what it's looking like in terms of punches landed.
21:09Sagawa in the lead by three so far through five.
21:13Bernardo Ursuna, Timothy Bradley ringside.
21:16Art Kriegel, our ringside reporter.
21:19Edgar Belanga after his Canelo Alvarez fight.
21:24Look at all that bling.

21:28Yep.
21:29That Canelo money hits different.
21:31It's real different.
21:32That Canelo money hit different for you now?
21:34Come on now, stop playing.
21:37Shushu right now, again, just looking for opportunities.
21:40Got off his feint game.
21:42You know, if you feint your opposition, it's to draw reactions.
21:46I mean, it forces reactions.
21:48You know, and it gives you a brief glimpse into your opponent's mind.
21:52You know, you learn what their intentions are.
21:55If Shushu gets on his feint game, if Sagawa gets on his feint game,
22:00you'll have a small glimpse in what Shushu wants to do, and vice versa.
22:06Tim, you see Shushu in the Philly shell here.
22:09How effective is it against a southpaw?
22:11I don't like it.
22:12That lead, I mean, see, you got caught with a straight left hand right there,
22:16and all you need is a swivel jab to follow that.
22:19Sagawa, the swivel jab is the lead hand, so it's a 2-1 combination
22:23that makes that shot available with that Philly shell on the inside.
22:28Can't stand it.
22:29You see a lot of guys doing that.
22:35And a nice combination there from Sagawa, partially blocked by Carrington,
22:40but you can see that Carrington's looking for one shot right now,
22:43and Sagawa's throwing more combinations.
22:47Yeah, and Carrington right there, you see him placing that lead hand
22:51on top of Sagawa's, pinning it, not allowing him to use it.
22:55He needs to do more of that, take that lead hand away.
22:59And you see how Sagawa's using somewhat of a basket defense
23:03to block the body shots.
23:05So that opens up the head for Carrington.
23:08The looping right hand.
23:09Sagawa's quick too.
23:11Not lining quick, but quick enough.
23:16He understands situations very well in there.
23:19Again, that's from being battle-tested.
23:23Got great sparring last camp against Lamont Roach.
23:28That helped him in that victory against Ruben Villa,
23:31and now he's in this fight against Bruce Shushu Carrington
23:35in his hometown in New York City.
23:45A chess match brewing here inside the theater at MSU.
23:51Send those pigs in.

24:23All right, here you go.
24:24Look alive, dipsticks.
24:25I got Little Caesars.
24:27Did you get pepperoni?
24:28I want Italian sausage.
24:29It better be bacon pizza.
24:30Brothers, it's a three-meat treat.
24:33It's got all those delicious toppings.
24:35Come on.
24:36Bacon, pepperoni, Italian sausage.
24:38Send Pop Kittle a slice.
24:41I'm a dog.
24:44The Kittles love their three-meat treat.
24:47Go to your three-meat treat for $8.99
24:49and get your game day delivered with Little Caesars.
24:51Pizza, pizza.
24:53Huge step-up fight for Bruce Shushu Carrington,
24:56but it's also an important fight for Suleman Segawa.
24:59Not just for him, but for his country, Uganda,
25:01so much so that the Ugandan ambassador to the U.S.
25:04is at the fight.
25:05So is the Minister of Sports and Tourism.
25:08So Sule's army in full effect here.
25:12But this is Shushu's town.
25:14See a nice shot there from Segawa.
25:16Now a right hand from Shushu Carrington.
25:18But it's one at a time, Tim, when it comes to Shushu.
25:24As of right now, again, timing, timing, timing.
25:27Distance, distance.
25:28He has to get close enough.
25:30He does have long arms.
25:31However, Segawa, he also has long arms.
25:34And again, there's a little hesitation
25:36between southpaw and orthodox
25:38because it's all about Adlon and that backhand.
25:42Kay Karoma has been a part of the promotion
25:45for the main event,
25:46but he's also in the corner of Shushu Carrington.
25:48Tim, what did Kay tell you?
25:50You mean, Mark, what did Kay tell you?
25:53You're confusing me.
25:56He says, stop.
25:58Kay told him, stop waiting for the perfect shot.
26:01Just use your jab, go behind the jab.
26:06But Shushu, in his past couple of fights,
26:09he's had spectacular knockouts,
26:11and he didn't use his jab enough.
26:14So he's gotten accustomed to not using his jab.
26:16He's using his jab to set up his offense.
26:19However, he needs to go to it
26:21because he's going to need it
26:23to be able to close the distance on Segawa.
26:25We always talk about, Tim,
26:26against lesser opposition, you develop bad habits.
26:29And then, now you need that as part of your arsenal,
26:32and it's not second nature to you.
26:34Yeah, he's using it right now,
26:36but Segawa is slippery.
26:38He's showing really good defense.
26:39Head clash right there.
26:41Southpaw orthodoxy tends to happen.
26:43To put things into perspective,
26:45four total jabs landed the last three rounds for Shushu.
26:52Home run attempt right there.
26:53Hail Mary from Segawa,
26:55looking to catch Shushu slipping.
26:59Nice little angle Segawa took right there.
27:03And there you see the lump on the top of the forehead.
27:07Shushu Carrington wasn't under the eye,
27:10wasn't in a bad spot,
27:11but you see the effects of that headbutt,
27:13and Segawa's clean.
27:21It's a classic technical battle right here for positioning.
27:26The hematoma continues to get bigger
27:28on the forehead of Shushu Carrington.
27:30Not Hasim Rahman big, but...
27:33It can grow.
27:34It can continue to grow.
27:46More tactical than we expected,
27:48but that is what Segawa is bringing out
27:51in Shushu Carrington.
27:59What are you doing?
28:00Yo, Sean, put him on game.

28:28Look alive, dipsticks, I got Little Caesars.
28:31Did you get pepperoni?
28:32I want Italian sausage.
28:33It better be bacon pizza.
28:35Brothers, it's a three-meat treat.
28:37It's got all those delicious toppings.
28:39Come on.
28:40Bacon, pepperoni, Italian sausage.

28:54Pizza, pizza.
28:55Watch your heads.
28:57Cruz Carrington dealing with a hematoma
29:00on the right side of his forehead.
29:02Tim, you were the one that was used to administering
29:04those to your opponent.
29:06What is Shushu dealing with here?
29:08Right here, head clash.
29:10This is a classic southpaw versus orthodox.
29:12You see the left hand being thrown.
29:14You see the head moving forward.
29:16Head clash, bad position for Shushu to be in.
29:21But, you know, he has Mike Baszle in his corner.
29:23Mike Baszle knows how to handle defense.
29:25Mike Baszle knows how to handle these type of situations.
29:27You can see it's already, the swelling's already down.
29:30It's kind of spreaded across the forehead.
29:32But all you have to do is you got to put pressure
29:35on those areas to slow down the bleeding.
29:37And you know what?
29:38Mark, put ice and pressure.
29:39Our reporter just spoke with Mike Baszle
29:41about the inflammation.
29:42Yeah, speaking of Baszle says, yeah, pressure.
29:46It's a big knot, but I got it spreading out.
29:49So he seems pretty nonplussed by it.
29:52Yeah, it's no longer just one tiny lump.
29:54It's expanded throughout the forehead,
29:56but it's not as big as it was.
29:58So that's protruding.
30:00No longer a horn.
30:02Right.
30:04Shushu right here again.
30:06He's having difficulty landing his offense.
30:08I mean, he's landing it one punch,
30:10two punches sometimes, occasionally.
30:12Sagawa as well.
30:14Both guys are respecting each other's game.
30:16Neither man wants to make a mistake.
30:20In tonight's main event, Michaela Mayer
30:22cannot afford to make a mistake against power punching
30:25welterweight champion Sandy Ryan.
30:27Michaela Mayer, former WBO and IBF junior lightweight
30:30world champion, gets her second crack
30:32at a welterweight world title.
30:35That will be our main event
30:38coming up after Xander Zayas takes on
30:41Damian Sosa in our co-main.
30:44Eighth round of caring for Sagawa.
30:46Things have not opened up for either fighter as of yet.
30:50Nice left there from Sagawa
30:52as he puts a combination together.
30:54That's exactly what you're supposed to do
30:56when you have your man along the ropes.
30:58You want to bite at him. He has nowhere to go.
31:00Either go left or right or try to come into you.
31:02Shushu chose to come into you.
31:04However, there was a little influence
31:06by the judges right there
31:08because he let three punches, four punches go off.
31:12Showing the judges that,
31:14hey, I'm controlling this fight.
31:18There's that jab from Carrington from far out.
31:21That sets up a counter from Sagawa if he sees it.
31:28Look at the defensive skills and awareness of Sagawa.
31:35Look, Tim, when he was being relentless
31:38against Ruben Villa and basically running him over,
31:41we said, that was a nice counter there.
31:44We hope the judges score it properly.
31:47This is a chess match. It can go either way.
31:50It's going to be interesting to see what happens
31:53if we end up seeing the bell at the end of round number 10.
32:01Couldn't we just tell people Aflac pays cash

33:01Try to fight out the clutches, all right?
33:03So far in terms of power punches landed,
33:05Shusha Carrington only going into double digits
33:08in round number 5 when he landed 11 for Sagawa.
33:1215 in both the 2nd and the 5th round.
33:16So that's a big difference so far.
33:18Does it make a difference on your card, Mark Kriegel?
33:21Nothing really makes a difference on my card right now
33:24because I got it tied up at 76 apiece.
33:27Four rounds.
33:29Look, I understand what Shusha was doing,
33:31but he needs to be more aggressive.
33:33If he ever becomes the fighter we think he is,
33:35he's going to owe a great deal to the education
33:38that Sagawa gave him this evening.
33:41Nothing has yet been determined.
33:43That was a nice counter left, though, from Shusha Carrington
33:46as Sagawa tried to land from no-man's land.
33:51And not a lot of good left hands from Shusha.
33:54He's been right-hand defended, Tim.
33:57Yeah, I mean, he has an outside attack.
34:00It's just Sagawa's really good at angling
34:03and getting out of position
34:06or getting away from punches.
34:08See, slight low pivot right there
34:10to get off on an angle.
34:13Tim, it's those slight movements
34:15that really make a bigger difference
34:17instead of those announced movements that people can read.
34:20Again, wow, nice counter.
34:22Nice setup.
34:25And you see Shusha trying to get it back.
34:27Trying to get it back, but Sagawa, that was nice.
34:30He moved left, then he came back right
34:33and looped that backhand.
34:35I should say, excuse me, that power hand.
34:37That left cross.
34:39Look, CompuBox numbers don't tell the story,
34:42but they are a good guide,
34:44and Sagawa has landed 89,
34:46now 90 of 370.
34:48Shusha, 76 of 292.
34:51Sagawa is letting his hands go.
34:53He's letting his hands go.
34:54That's what he's doing.
34:55He's trying to win this fight.
34:57That's what he's doing.
34:58In a fight like this, Tim,
35:00you cannot believe that just a one shot at a time
35:03is going to win this fight.
35:05Absolutely not.
35:06You get accustomed to getting these knockouts,
35:08and that's what happens.
35:10That's probably what's happening right now to Shusha,
35:13and he's getting resistance coming back for the first time.
35:16So this is good.
35:17This is great for his career right now.
35:19And Tim, what did you say earlier on?
35:21Sagawa is not going to get tired,
35:23so if that's what you're expecting,
35:26got something else coming,
35:27and that's what we're seeing so far.
35:29It's a nice jab from Shusha.
35:32The one thing that I like about Shusha, though,
35:34he's not getting frustrated.
35:37He's not getting frustrated because he's not having his way.
35:39However, I'll tell you one thing he got away from.
35:42That was working.
35:43He got away from going down to the body with the right hand.
35:46That was working.
35:47He's getting, well, both guys.
35:49Sagawa got away from it after being very effective with it
35:52the first two rounds.
35:53Shusha was effective the second two rounds,
35:55and now we are here with ten punches land,
35:59ten power punches landed by Sagawa here in the ninth round.
36:05Couldn't we just tell people Aflac pays cash for expenses
36:09not covered by health insurance?
36:10If we want people to understand how Aflac helps close that gap,

37:07Tenth and final round of this fight,
37:10which pretty much could be a title eliminator.
37:14We're talking about WBA number one, Bruce Shushu Carrington,
37:18WBC number two, and Suleman Sagawa,
37:21who's WBC number three in the world.
37:24So, the fight is in the balance here in the 10th round.
37:28It sure is.
37:29You don't know how they score in these matches, these rounds.
37:32I mean, close rounds, not a whole lot of action.
37:35And Tim, we see Sandy Ryan there kind of trying to loosen up her neck.
37:39She's been through a lot already, having pain thrown at her
37:43as she was leaving her hotel room to come to the arena.
37:46She needs to settle herself down to make the third defense
37:49of her welterweight title against Michaela Mayer.
37:52I will say this, Sandy Ryan has been through a lot in her life.
37:57A lot more difficult than some paint being thrown on her.
38:02I think she can overcome this, no problem.
38:05She looks comfortable.
38:06She's getting in her zone right now.
38:08In the locker room, you see her bobbing to her music,
38:11and she's focused.
38:12If anything, it's just going to add more fuel
38:15to what she has planned for this matchup.
38:18She already throws spiteful punches.
38:20There's going to be a little something extra in those punches
38:23for Michaela Mayer in tonight's championship main event.
38:27For now, though, Shushu Carrington in the toughest fight of his career
38:31against Suleyman Sagawa.
38:33Sagawa was able to pull off a decision victory
38:36against WBO number one-ranked fighter Ruben Villa.
38:40His last time out on July 13th on a top-ranked boxing on ESPN card.
38:45Can he do the same against the WBA number one-ranked contender
38:50in Shushu Carrington?
38:52And you see just how Shushu's total connect percentage
38:55has gone down significantly.
38:5815% drop.
39:00He's at the featherweight average when before, Tim,
39:03he was at an exorbitant accuracy and efficiency rate.
39:06He has a well-schooled opposition in front of him
39:09that's not allowing him to get anything easy tonight.
39:13Sagawa choosing to box off his back foot,
39:17occasionally coming forward when Shushu didn't do anything.
39:20But right now, it seems that Sagawa's just bagging up,
39:24trying to make it to the end of this bell.
39:26I don't know if that's a smart thing.
39:28You want to win these last rounds. You have to.
39:31This fight's too close in my eyes.
39:34Absolutely.
39:36And I expect a competitive fight in the judges' scorecards,
39:39and I hope that's what we get,
39:41because that's what we've seen inside the ring.
39:45Sulu with the jab and...
39:48going into the final round.
39:50Yeah, this is all new territory for Shushu.
39:52He's not even breathing.
39:54So if you're wondering if he's ready to go 10 rounds,
39:56this is nothing for him.
39:58He can go 12 rounds as well.
40:00Yeah, but it's not that. It's the punch output.
40:03There's a slip there from Sagawa,
40:05who slipped on the logo.
40:09Not the ending either fighter really needed here.
40:12The chess match, a good fight,
40:15a good test for Bruce Shushu.
40:17The question is, Tim, did he pass the test?
40:21And only three people have that answer,
40:24and only they matter.
40:26Marc Constantino, Glenn Fellman, and Martha Trembley,
40:30the three judges who will determine the winner in this fight.
40:33So let's take a look at this strategy battle
40:37between the southpaw Sagawa
40:39and the right-handed fighter Shushu.
40:42This is a technical battle,
40:44but I like the way Sagawa came out and set this table.
40:48I thought he won the first two rounds.
40:50He came out aggressive. He landed some shots.
40:53Then Shushu was able to mount his attack here and there.
40:56It looked like Shushu was starting to get himself
40:58into a little bit of a rhythm.
41:00He started to find a home for his right hand
41:02and going downstairs as well to the body.
41:04However, the end of the fight,
41:06a lot of back-and-forth action,
41:08but a lot of missed shots from both men.
41:10You know, this last round,
41:12Sagawa backed up the entire time.
41:15Didn't do any work.
41:17However, you see him afterwards,
41:19he's putting his hands up.
41:21He's happy with what went on.
41:23And again, I wonder what the judges have scored this fight,
41:27the way they scored this fight.
41:29Not a whole lot of action for the fans at home.
41:32However, it was a really good test for Shushu Carrington.
41:35Let's take a look at the CompuBox number.
41:37And you see that 17 punch advantage
41:40in terms of connected shots for Sulaiman Sagawa.
41:44And the percentage accuracy gap was just 1%
41:48in favor of Sagawa,
41:50who landed six more body shots than Shushu.
41:52But the punch totals,
41:54it doesn't tell the story of the fight.
41:56It just doesn't.
41:58A lot of these rounds were swing rounds.
42:01Mark Kriegel, what's your scorecard look like?
42:0595-95.
42:07I do not have any idea
42:09why Sagawa took his foot off the brake in that last round.
42:13Yeah, I think that's going to be the big question
42:15because I had the fight being determined
42:19by that 10th and final round, Timmy.
42:21You can't leave it in the judges' hands
42:23that way when you potentially can win it.
42:26Yeah, you can't do that.
42:28I mean, we've seen that many times.
42:30We saw it with Lomachenko.
42:33Yes, sir.
42:38All right, let's see what Mark Chinook has
42:40on the official judges' scorecards.
42:42Ladies and gentlemen,
42:44after 10 rounds here
42:46inside the theater at Madison Square Garden,
42:49we go to the judges' scorecards
42:51for the official decision.
42:53Glenn Feldman scores the bout 95-95.
42:59Mark Constantino and Martha Tremblay have it 97-93.
43:05For your winner by majority decision
43:09and now the NABF WB Silver
43:12and WBO Intercontinental Featherweight Champion
43:17from Brownsville, Brooklyn, New York,
43:20Bruce Shushu Carrington!
43:25All right, so Shushu Carrington
43:27that was a drawn one card,
43:29but 97-93 twice, Tim.
43:33I don't know what they were looking at.
43:37All right, let's go with Mark Regal
43:39and Shushu Carrington.
43:41Shushu, congratulations.
43:44Congratulations, kid.
43:46That was close.
43:48Yeah, man.
43:50First off, Sula, you're a good fighter, bro.
43:53Yeah, definitely my best competitor I've had so far.
43:56Great fighter, man.
43:58First and foremost, man, I want to thank God for my victory
44:01and my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
44:04I want to be able to give a huge shout-out
44:08to the people that's packed the real backbone of my team.
44:11I got Coach K and everybody,
44:13but my mom helped me real strong,
44:15my mentor and my beautiful wife.
44:17Shushu, you were tested tonight.
44:20Yes, sir.
44:22If you become what we think you are,
44:25what do you owe Sagawa for your education?
44:29Man, you know, I owe him a lot.
44:31You know, this is just going to get me to the next level.
44:35What did you learn tonight?
44:37Man, you know, I just learned to deal with the off-tempo.
44:40I got a little couple things I got to work on back in the gym,
44:43but, you know, we got to get back on our feet
44:45and have more dominant performances,
44:47but as long as we got the W at the end of the day, we still good.
44:50Congratulations, kid.
44:52All right, so Shushu Carrington improves to 13-0.
44:55Suleman Sagawa could have done more, Tim.
44:58Yeah, he could have done more.
