00:00Why do many people love the isekai genre? What fascinates us about diving into another world?
00:05I'll answer these questions right after the intro.
00:08Nobody said you were caught in a dream
00:15The isekai genre is gaining more and more popularity.
00:18This also means that more and more isekai anime are being produced.
00:22Sometimes even 5 isekai anime are running simultaneously in Japan.
00:26Of course, there are always critics due to a lot of hype.
00:30And so I also recorded the isekai trend in my disappointments of 2019.
00:35Because some people can't start anything with isekai anime.
00:38But many of you like the isekai genre very much.
00:42For some, it's even their favorite genre.
00:44But what fascinates many people about isekai?
00:46Why do we like to dive into another world?
00:49That's what this video is about.
00:51And actually, I've already hit the nail on the head with the questions.
00:55Because almost everyone likes to dive into another world.
00:58But we don't just do that in isekai anime.
01:01That's what isekai literally means, another world.
01:03But actually, in almost every fictional story, we go into another world.
01:08Sometimes it's closer to our reality.
01:11They deal with the daily life of the characters on earth.
01:14But most of the time, these anime don't play in Germany, but in Japan.
01:18That's not another world, but a different country.
01:21With its own culture and way of life.
01:24But there are also many series that play in a fantasy world.
01:27So with magic and dragons.
01:29However, not all fantasy anime are isekai anime.
01:32Nevertheless, we like them for a similar reason.
01:35Because they take us into another world.
01:37A new world.
01:38A world that is more exciting than our own reality.
01:42For half an hour we escape from school or work.
01:45We don't have to worry about homework anymore.
01:48Or take out the trash.
01:49Now we fight dragons.
01:51Or save humanity from the demon lord.
01:54Most stories allow us to take a break from everyday life.
01:58And many want to get as far away from it as possible.
02:01Of course, a fantasy world is best suited for this.
02:04But how do isekai and fantasy anime differ?
02:07Isekai series always start in our world.
02:11Our protagonist walks through the streets.
02:13But then suddenly a gate opens.
02:15Or a portal appears and he lands in another world.
02:19In typical fantasy anime, however, the protagonists are already part of this world at the beginning.
02:24They were born there and for them this environment is nothing special anymore.
02:28For the protagonist from an isekai anime, however, everything is new.
02:32At least mostly.
02:33Because many isekai series also kidnap the main character in a video game.
02:37And most of the time he knows that pretty well.
02:39But still, of course, it's something else to really live in this game world.
02:44The world often changes when the protagonist enters it.
02:48NPCs become more alive and when injured you feel the pain.
02:52But that alone is a cool idea.
02:55To immerse yourself in the world of a video game.
02:57Who doesn't want that?
02:58That's why there was this huge hype for VR.
03:02Sure, we are still far from the nerf gear from SAO.
03:05Nevertheless, many were already fascinated by the possibility.
03:09And even with VR games, you are usually part of this world.
03:12You put on the helmet and are teleported into the game world, so to speak.
03:16Almost like in an isekai anime.
03:18This way we can easily identify with the protagonist.
03:22We imagine that something like this could happen to us too.
03:25One day we wake up and we are in another world.
03:35Like the protagonist, we only get to know them slowly.
03:38What are the people in this world like?
03:40Is there magic?
03:41Who is the enemy?
03:42Who is a friend?
03:43Is this world built up like a video game with levels?
03:46Or is it more realistic?
03:48Incidentally, this also makes the work of the author easier.
03:51So the one who wrote the template or the series.
03:54Because that's not how the world has to be explained before.
03:58But we slowly get to know them with the main character.
04:01That's why many isekai authors are still quite young.
04:04At least this is often their first work.
04:06I'll explain why this is important in a moment.
04:09But let's get back to the other world.
04:12Because you have probably already noticed that they are similar.
04:15So that isekai series feel like they all play in the same world.
04:19This is how our medieval age resembles them.
04:21There are knights and castles, but no current technology.
04:25The people don't just walk around with smartphones in their hands.
04:28Such a device is like magic for the inhabitants.
04:31You can see this, for example, in the anime In Another World With My Smartphone.
04:35There the protagonist takes his cell phone into the other world.
04:39And of course it also attracts a lot of attention.
04:42But regardless of that.
04:43Many isekai anime also look like typical fantasy video games.
04:47So with monsters and guilds.
04:49This is of course also because many take place in video games.
04:53As a result, they are usually easy to understand.
04:56There are the good and the bad.
04:57You have to destroy monsters or demons.
05:00With money you buy equipment.
05:02The higher the level, the stronger you are.
05:05The real world, on the other hand, is much more complicated.
05:08You can't just level all the time to defeat the strongest boss at some point.
05:13The way to the top is much more difficult.
05:16And that's pretty important in many isekai anime.
05:19Because the protagonists usually level up very quickly.
05:22Or are already very strong right at the beginning.
05:24And so strong that no one can touch them.
05:27Of course, you can live out a very clear power fantasy.
05:32Who doesn't want to be the biggest or strongest?
05:34Be the very best?
05:36Or just a winner to make the pokemon references even more obvious.
05:40Nevertheless, you always have to emphasize that in front of the screen is a very ordinary person.
05:45Most of the time the protagonist is not a really skillful player.
05:48Or even on the esports level.
05:50He only leveled up in a game.
05:52So it's no wonder that we don't dive into the world of a MOBA.
05:57Or from another competitive multiplayer game.
06:00To reach a high level, you actually only need stamina.
06:04In real life, that's nothing special.
06:06In the game world, however, it is.
06:08So we can imagine being the protagonist.
06:11Leveling up a character and then suddenly landing in the game world.
06:16Superheroes, on the other hand, are often unattainable.
06:19We can never be as strong as Superman.
06:21And Batman doesn't just need money to defeat criminals.
06:25In a game world, however, we can have superhero powers.
06:28And so we can save other people.
06:34Isekai Series
06:38By chance, they are mostly female.
06:41Of course, they are impressed by everyone and join the group.
06:44And so more and more women gather around the protagonist.
06:48To have something like that in real life is unimaginable.
06:51Isekai anime make it possible.
06:53In addition, such Isekai series always allow a restart.
06:57Our protagonist may not have been satisfied with his life.
07:00He's stuck in a annoying job or doesn't feel like doing everyday things anymore.
07:05In another world, however, his life begins anew.
07:08He meets new friends, but also a new, more interesting world.
07:12Many Isekai series are also aimed at the wishes of many viewers.
07:17As I said, such works by many authors are their first publications.
07:22They are not yet as polished as their later books or series.
07:26This is why the wishes and preferences of the authors are also clearly visible.
07:30This can be seen, for example, in the Isekai anime Arifureta.
07:34Who doesn't want to explore the dark caves together with Yui?
07:38Or fight against monster waves with Raftalia?
07:41Many Isekai anime simply deliver what they want.
07:44Without being ashamed of it or wanting to hide this desire.
07:49How nice it would be to be able to start again.
07:51How nice it would be to be the strongest.
07:54How nice it would be to be popular.
07:56Such dreams are fulfilled in Isekai anime.
07:59However, there is another form of Isekai anime.
08:02Because where we are talking about Arifureta.
08:04At least at the beginning, nobody wants to be in the skin of the protagonist.
08:08Hajime is very weak and falls into an abyss at the beginning of the series.
08:13There, on the lower levels, the monsters are far too strong for him.
08:16Only with pure despair can he free himself from this emergency.
08:21Or the shield hero doesn't have it easy either.
08:23Because he only has a shield as a weapon, everyone looks down on him.
08:26How can you only fight with it?
08:28You can't defend the country with a shield.
08:30That's what the people around him think.
08:32The two protagonists seem pretty weak at first.
08:35They quickly despair of their uselessness.
08:38But they use these feelings to become stronger.
08:41They bite their teeth together and work harder than anyone else.
08:45Just to be able to show it to everyone one day.
08:48This feeling is typically human.
08:50You want to be underestimated just to surprise everyone.
08:53Both do just that.
08:55This way you can enjoy the moment of strength even more.
08:58So where you just reveal your own strengths.
09:01You also worked hard for it.
09:04However, if you only get them by chance, it is much less satisfying.
09:08But there are not only these two types of isekai anime.
09:12Recently, many isekai series have tried something different.
09:16For example, there is more often a female protagonist.
09:19Or the protagonist is not strong, but rather fragile.
09:23Like in Ashidance of a Bookworm for example.
09:25Or it's not just one coming into the other world, but several.
09:29Some anime even make fun of the isekai genre.
09:32All the clichés are pulled through the cocoa.
09:36Examples of this are Konosuba or currently Cautious Hero.
09:39All these variations help to give the isekai genre new spices.
09:43To try something new.
09:46Because always having a super strong male protagonist is boring, right?
09:50You finally feel like Saitama.
09:52He also defeats every opponent with a punch.
09:55Because he just got way too strong through his training.
09:58Saitama is looking forward to finally having a real fight.
10:02Which does not end immediately in the first round.
