00:00In the Department of Humanities we have a laboratory called the DH Lab, Digital Humanities Lab.
00:11For us it is now natural to work together in synergy with colleagues of science, engineering and architecture.
00:19We have many projects and we develop them together with them,
00:23also touching on topics such as artificial intelligence, virtual reality.
00:28So we are enhancing this type of approach a lot because today it is essential.
00:33I, for example, deal with medieval art, so in the Middle Ages it would seem the period less suitable for technology.
00:40Instead, for us it is fundamental because, for example, studying medieval churches,
00:44which today are almost unrecognizable because the face of Rome basically sees baroque churches,
00:53through virtual reality, the digital twins, we are able to bring back the architecture in time,
01:01virtually, and therefore propose the aspect of how the churches were in the Middle Ages
01:05and how the paintings were inside them.
01:07In fact, here, on this incredible night, we have brought a demo of,
01:14if we want to experiment with the public, a virtual journey inside a medieval church.
01:20Therefore, the public can interact through the Oculus,
01:24enter the church, navigate, get to know the paintings,
01:28and above all have a general idea of what the painting was like in the Middle Ages,
01:34because within this path we have put some reconstructions through virtual restoration,
01:39that is, we have virtually restored the paintings.
01:42So if you enter the church, you may find the paintings damaged by time, sometimes unreadable.
01:48Through virtual restoration, we also help the public to understand
01:52what a medieval painting could be like in its time.
01:56New technologies are, for us, an essential research tool,
02:00but also the tool we have to be able to communicate science,
02:04what we study, to a wider audience.
02:07Today we are really able to reach anyone,
02:10because virtual reality is a fundamental tool
02:15because it really puts people in touch and makes immediate,
02:20what we in the past had to explain through articles and essays,
02:25and therefore only through writing.
02:27Today, with images, we can communicate in a short time,
02:31immediately, our science, our path.
