00:00The Flower Streets project is a celebration of Kirkdale and its residents.
00:05It's resulted in 11 large-scale murals on the gable end of houses,
00:10each one representing the namesake flowers of each street.
00:13The artworks are a celebration of the community and aim to rejuvenate the area
00:17as well as addressing the issue of anti-social behaviour.
00:20It initially started as part of the Safer Streets initiative,
00:23so this was a local councillor and council officers
00:27who were already trying to respond to people in this area
00:31who were trying to tell us how they felt unsafe.
00:34So they had already invested in increasing the CCTV.
00:38We did a commission with Dot Art, who worked with the lovely Madeleine,
00:41to find the artists to create these murals.
00:44Acclaimed visual artist Madeleine Perez has been responsible for all the work
00:48and has been working alongside the community.
00:50She says she'll be sad to say goodbye to the local residents.
00:54I do art not to sort of show off. I do it to cheer people up.
00:58I've always wanted to sort of encourage others
01:01and try and help them see the best in themselves.
01:03And if what I do, like by using my gift, can inspire other people
01:07to, you know, just discover the best that they have in themselves
01:11to give out as well and hopefully make the world a better place,
01:14then I'll be happy.
01:16Joyce's grandmother lived on Daisy Street in 1901
01:19and now there's a tribute to her on her former home.
01:23I still find it hard to comprehend how she's done it,
01:27the amount of energy and effort.
01:30And her designs are so individual on each house
01:34that they're truly works of art.
01:36Before the creation of the murals, residents and school groups
01:39were invited to be part of an engagement programme
01:41which included workshops encouraging storytelling, writing,
01:44drawing and painting, as well as an appreciation of ecology.
01:48They're amazing, like from day one when she started
01:52you can see and they're amazing, like the amount of service
01:55and everything together, you know, taking pictures and everything.
01:58And she has done a brilliant job.
