The government's decision to axe winter fuel payments has sparked debate across the country. We hit the streets of Birmingham to ask locals what they would have cut instead to keep the payments going. With some bills rising and others dropping, do Brummies still feel we're in a cost of living crisis?

00:00I think we are in a cost-of-living crisis, but there are decisions that governments can
00:05make. Some of it is, yeah, cut things, but sometimes you take more money from rich people,
00:10and that will more than cover pensioners getting cold. I think that's a pretty cruel way of
00:15balancing the books. I get that needs to happen, but yeah, I would take more money from rich
00:21people rather than pensioners.
00:23I wouldn't have cut them, no. I think it's a bit of an own goal for Labour to come and
00:27do that when they first come in. I think they could have taken it from elsewhere. You know,
00:32the top 2% earners in the country, I think they could contribute a bit more to the masses
00:36of wealth that they've got. So, no, I think that's the wrong thing to do at this point,
00:41especially as a new government when everybody is, you know, wanting them to achieve things
00:46and do better. So, I think it's a bit of an own goal.
00:49Governments should do something about this. I don't agree with them supporting people
00:57for winter cost of living.
