How did Iron Man become Doctor Doom?
Who is the Iron Man who became Doctor Doom?
No, this never happened in an OFFICIAL Earth-616 story from the comics, but rather in the reality called Earth-11029. This happened in the comic WHAT IF? Iron Man: Demon in Armor, released in December 2010.
Firstly, it is mentioned that the characters' childhoods and origins are basically THE SAME as on Earth-616. However, everything goes down a completely different path from the moment Doom becomes Tony's roommate... instead of Reed Richards!
In the story, we see a young Victor Von Doom tricking Tony Stark into an experiment where they swap bodies. Doom's mind went into Tony's body and Tony's mind went into Doom's body, but with his memory being erased.
Tony Stark, trapped in Doom's body, is expelled from college because of the illegal experiment and has to fend for himself to earn a living and build Doom Industries from scratch.
During this, Victor Voon enjoys all the benefits of wealth and privilege of being the sole heir to a great empire. But the villain would not have the innate nature of a hero.
The success of a poor young man's company from Latveria angers the real Doom, who is running the company Stark Universal. Doom tries to sabotage Stark's plans and this dispute leads to the characters creating armor!
The Arc Reactor (couldn't be missing, right?) is surpassing all of Stark Universal's technology. In retaliation, Doom gives up selling the armor at the highest price and invests in sabotaging Doom Industries.
Obviously, Tony's body armor resembles Destiny's look. Doom's body armor is reminiscent of Iron Man's classic armor.
The armor of Iron Man and Doctor Doom from Earth-11029
The story ends with Tony defeating Victor Doom. But instead of undoing the experiment and swapping bodies, Tony decides to continue living as Victor Von Doom.
After all, Tony Stark's name in that world was now directly associated with a bad, greedy and exploitative person. A rather heroic sacrifice, to say the least.
So that's it! A very interesting story that has not been referenced at any other time in Marvel comics. But it's impossible not to remember this story.
It may not have any value for the future of the MCU, but it is a taste of how the union between Iron Man and Doctor Doom can yield good stories!
Will the MCU adapt this story in Avengers: Doomsday?
So far, everything indicates that the MCU's Doomsday will follow a TOTALLY different story from the one seen in this edition of What If?. There are several reasons and have already been expressed by different artists.
Starting with Kevin Feige and Robert Downey Jr., who reinforced the concern to keep Tony Stark's legacy and the sacrifice of Avengers: Endgame intact. Therefore, to bring the actor back to the MCU – even with the excuse of the Multiverse – they would have to look for another way out that wasn't a Variant of Tony Stark.

00:04No, this never happened in an official Earth-616 story from the comics, but rather in the reality
00:08called Earth-11029. This happened in the comic What If? Iron Man, Demon in Armor,
00:14released in December 2010. Firstly, it is mentioned that the character's childhoods and
00:18origins are basically the same as on Earth-616. However, everything goes down a completely
00:23different path from the moment Doom becomes Tony's roommate, instead of Reed Richards.
00:27In the story, we see a young Victor Von Doom tricking Tony Stark into an experiment where
00:31they swap bodies. Doom's mind went into Tony's body and Tony's mind went into Doom's body,
00:36but with his memory being erased. Tony Stark, trapped in Doom's body, is expelled from college
00:40because of the illegal experiment and has to fend for himself to earn a living and build Doom
00:44Industries from scratch. During this, Victor Von enjoys all the benefits of wealth and privilege
00:48of being the sole heir to a great empire. But the villain would not have the innate nature of a
00:52hero. The success of a poor young man's company from Latveria angers the real Doom, who is running
00:57the company Stark Universal. Doom tries to sabotage Stark's plans and this dispute leads to
01:01the characters creating armor. The arc reactor, couldn't be missing, right? Is surpassing all of
01:06Stark Universal's technology. In retaliation, Doom gives up selling the armor at the highest price
01:11and invests in sabotaging Doom Industries. Obviously, Tony's body armor resembles Destiny's
01:15look. Doom's body armor is reminiscent of Iron Man's classic armor. The armor of Iron Man and
01:20Doctor Doom from Earth-11029. The story ends with Tony defeating Victor Doom, but instead of undoing
01:26the experiment and swapping bodies, Tony decides to continue living as Victor Von Doom. After all,
01:31Tony Stark's name in that world was now directly associated with a bad, greedy, and exploitative
01:35person. A rather heroic sacrifice, to say the least. So that's it. A very interesting story
01:40that has not been referenced at any other time in Marvel Comics. But it's impossible not to
01:44remember this story. It may not have any value for the future of the MCU, but it is a taste of how
01:49the union between Iron Man and Doctor Doom can yield good stories. Will the MCU adapt this story
01:54in Avengers? Doomsday? So far, everything indicates that the MCU's Doomsday will follow a
01:58totally different story from the one seen in this edition of What If…? There are several reasons,
02:02and have already been expressed by different artists. Starting with Kevin Feige and Robert
02:06Downey Jr., who reinforced the concern to keep Tony Stark's legacy and the sacrifice of Avengers
02:11in-game intact. Therefore, to bring the actor back to the MCU, even with the excuse of the
02:15multiverse, they would have to look for another way out that wasn't a variant of Tony Stark.
02:19Furthermore, the answer was in front of fans the entire time. That's because the announcement of
02:23RDJ's return at San Diego Comic-Con featured the Russo brothers making it very clear that the actor
02:28will play Victor Von Doom. In other words, if it were to be a variant of Tony taking on the
02:31mantle of Doctor Doom, they would make everything less clear and just call him Doctor Doom.
02:35Later, during an interview, Robert Downey Jr. spoke about the moment he met Doctor Doom and
02:39delved deeper into the villain's history. Downey Jr. will be Doom, not a variant of Stark.
02:44To conclude, we have a rumor that claims that Downey's return to the MCU will actually happen
02:48in the Fantastic Four. First steps. And everything leads us to believe that Downey Jr. will be the
02:52Victor Von Doom of this other reality. This is because it is already confirmed that the MCU
02:56quartet will not be from Earth 616. Apparently, they will actually avoid bringing a live-action
03:01Tony Stark variant. But it's a fact that this should happen, at least in Avengers Secret Wars.
03:06On the other hand, an interesting alternative would be to adapt this story in the third season
03:10of What If, which is confirmed for Disney Plus. Even though the animation is more focused on MCU
03:14events, this would be a really cool way to get the audience prepared and excited for what's coming.
03:18Write in the comments, Robert Downey Jr. and I'll answer a curiosity about the actor for you.
