Vice presidential candidates Tim Walz and J.D. Vance faced off in their first and possibly only debate Tuesday night, just five weeks ahead of Election Day in a closely contested race.

00:00I'm Margaret Brennan.
00:02In order to have Iran or Israel's ability
00:07to be able to defend itself is absolutely fundamental.
00:09But what's fundamental here is that steady leadership is going to matter.
00:13Donald Trump actually delivered stability in the world
00:16and he did it by establishing effective deterrence.
00:19People were afraid of stepping out of line.
00:21It is up to Israel what they think they need to do to keep their country safe.
00:25So if we actually care about getting cleaner air and cleaner water,
00:29the best thing to do is to double down and invest in American workers and the American people
00:34and unfortunately Kamala Harris has done exactly the opposite.
00:37Donald Trump called it a hoax
00:39and then joked that these things would make more beachfront property to be able to invest in.
00:43Climate change is real.
00:45Reducing our impact is absolutely critical.
00:47But this is not a false choice.
00:49Springfield, Ohio does have a large number of Haitian migrants who have legal status.
00:56Margaret, the rules were that you guys weren't going to fact-check
00:59and since you're fact-checking me, I think it's important to say what's actually going on.
01:03The CBD app has not been on the books since 1990.
01:07It's something that Kamala Harris created, Margaret.
01:09Gentlemen, the audience can't hear you because your mics are cut.
01:13You're going to hear a lot from Tim Walz this evening
01:15and you just heard it in the answer, a lot of what Kamala Harris proposes to do
01:19and some of it, I'll be honest with you, it even sounds pretty good.
01:22Here's what you won't hear, is that Kamala Harris has already done it
01:25because she's been the vice president for three and a half years.
01:28She had the opportunity.
01:30If you're listening tonight and you want billionaires to get tax cuts,
01:33you heard what the numbers were.
01:35I got there that summer and misspoke on this.
01:37So I will just, that's what I've said.
01:41So I was in Hong Kong and China during the democracy protest went in
01:47and from that I learned a lot of what needed to be in governance.
01:51But I've also been extremely open about the fact that I was wrong about Donald Trump.
01:55But most importantly, Donald Trump delivered for the American people.
01:59My party, we've got to do so much better of a job
02:02at earning the American people's trust back on this issue
02:06where they frankly just don't trust us.
02:08I want us as a Republican party to be pro-family in the fullest sense of the word.
02:13He is still saying he didn't lose the election.
02:15I would just ask that, did he lose the 2020 election?
02:18Tim, I'm focused on the future.
02:20Did Kamala Harris censor Americans from speaking their mind
02:24in the wake of the 2020 COVID situation?
02:27That is a damning non-answer.
02:30This coalition that Kamala Harris has built,
02:32from Bernie Sanders to Dick Cheney to Taylor Swift.
02:35But there's one that Senator Vance said that does resonate with me.
02:39He said, Donald Trump makes the people I care about afraid.
02:43A lot of America feels that way.
02:45She's been the vice president for three and a half years.
02:48Day one was 1,400 days ago,
02:51and her policies have made these problems worse.
