Marcos to join ASEAN Summit in Laos on Oct. 9-11

President Marcos will join his fellow Asian leaders in Vientiane, Laos next week for the 44th and 45th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit and Related Summits where he is expected to "champion" the Philippines' interests.

00:00Now, East Asia Summit is very important because it's the highest level strategic dialogue
00:06in Southeast Asia.
00:10It will be followed by an ASEAN-UN summit, and before the summit ends, the entire summit
00:16ends, there will be a second Asia Zero Emission Community Leaders' Meeting, which will also
00:24be held in Vientiane.
00:26Now, strictly speaking, this is not an ASEAN event, but it will be a sideline event.
00:30If you'll remember, last December, we held the first ASEAN Zero Emission Community Leaders'
00:37Meeting in Tokyo.
00:39So this is the follow-up meeting to that conference.
00:43Now, the primary aim of this community leaders' meeting would be the decarbonization of ASEAN
00:54economies as well as a green economy.
00:58Now, in these engagements, the Philippines will continue to uphold and promote Philippine
01:03interests in ASEAN.
01:05He will highlight our advocacies in connectivity and resilience, especially in strengthening
01:09the digital economy, supporting MSMEs, the promotion of renewable energy development,
01:15and addressing the impacts of climate change, among others.
01:19Furthermore, the President will continue to defend the Philippine sovereignty and sovereign
01:23rights and jurisdiction in accordance with international law, including the 1982 UNCLOS
01:30and the 2016 Arbitral Award.
