00:00It's like taking a horse ride off, isn't it, Bruce?
00:16The statue is modelled on a young Clydesdale filly, Norma, named in honour of the committee's
00:23late secretary, Norma Zingle.
00:24And at this point, I'd like to acknowledge Neil and Abbey, part of Norma's family, who
00:31are here today.
00:32Norma arrived in Barellan from Wollongong and became a tireless worker for our community,
00:37acting as secretary for the Barellan work in Clydesdales until her untimely passing
00:42in 2020.
00:43Each year, the committee presents the Norma Zingle Trophy to the champion draft animal
00:49in the ploughing demonstration.
00:51It would be remiss of me not to pay tribute to the Clydesdales, the subject of this statue.
00:57Australia's rural history is often placed squarely on the sheep's back, but it was in
01:03fact the mighty working horse fiends which carried the young nation from convict beginnings
01:07to prosperity.
01:08By the First World War, the working horse fiends were platinum-powered with 2.5 million
01:14Clydesdales in a country of just 5 million pieces, or one horse for every two persons.
