Work is now well underway at Haverfordwest’s Riverside, where a signature bridge scheme in the town’s conservation area is set to complete in March 2025.
Pembrokeshire County Council commissioned a team of consultants to undertake the detailed design of a modern replacement footbridge, refurbished former Cleddau Foundry building and reconfigured landscaped landing area to replace the existing footbridge in Haverfordwest.
The Proposed Scheme involves the removal of an existing pedestrian footbridge that spans across the Western Cleddau and the installation of a new pedestrian footbridge, to form a sculptural curved connection between Riverside and Western Quayside, that opens up a new visual connection to Haverfordwest Castle to the west.
Also part of the scheme are the repair, renewal and refurbishment of the former Cleddau Foundry building, and public realm reconfiguration at Western Quayside and Riverside, providing multi-functional spaces and connections that prioritise pedestrians, connecting routes to the new footbridge.
Detailed design was completed by AtkinsRéalis with the input of the Council, local residents and businesses in October 2023.
The bridge is being largely funded from the UK Government’s Levelling Up Fund with contribution from Pembrokeshire County Council, whilst the external works area are funded by Welsh Government and PCC.
