00:00All 27 European Union countries voted on Friday in Brussels whether to impose tariffs on electric
00:08vehicles and there was no clear majority either way. There were also a huge number of abstentions
00:15which meant that the European Commission, the EU's executive arm, had the casting vote
00:20and the Commission has always been in favour of introducing the new tariffs and so those duties
00:26on electric vehicles from China will come into effect in November. The EU's two biggest countries
00:32France and Germany were on opposite sides of the debate. President Macron has previously called
00:37the level of subsidies from China unbearable but Germany voted openly against the measures
00:44saying that it feared a possible trade war with China. Beijing has called the whole issue
00:50naked protectionism.
