02:49They had disputed WWE Championship.
02:53And AJ Styles told me in the days leading up to that match,
02:57that if he ever had to utter the words I quit to Cody Rhodes,
03:01that we may possibly never see him again.
03:04Thankfully, that was not the case.
03:07AJ Styles did need to step away, recalibrate, refocus his game plan.
03:12And remind himself why he is in fact the phenomenal one.

05:25And over the past couple months, I've done a lot of things that I regret.

05:37But I'm not here to talk about the past.
05:41I'm talking about tonight and rebuilding the legacy of AJ Styles.
05:48So I know there's a lot of guys that don't like me.
05:57And I don't blame them.
05:58There's a lot of other guys that need to be reminded
06:04that this is still the house that AJ Styles built.
06:11We've got some company in the house that AJ Styles built.

07:24And I'm sure you're out here to announce some giant
07:28legends contract that you just signed, but, and believe me, you deserve it.
07:35But if we're gonna talk about things that are deserved,
07:40allow me to talk about myself for a minute.
07:43A guy like me, a guy like me who deserves to be
07:49the US Champion, not LA Knight, and not Andrade.

08:01If it's okay with you, I'd like to maybe give you a little friendly advice.
08:08I've been in the ring with LA Knight before, and the guy is relentless.

12:16Or, the other choice in this whole thing is, AJ,
12:21it seems like you made a little challenge here to Carmello.
12:27He wasn't quite ready to take it, so I'll tell you what.
12:37I'm gonna go ahead and make sure that you wanna take it, Melo.
12:40Here's what you got.
12:41If you can beat AJ Styles right now, I'll make a real convincing case to Nick Ortis
12:47that you can get the shot that you so hardly think you deserve at
12:52the US Championship.
12:53But I'm gonna tell you what, regardless,
12:57the chances are, you're getting stomped out tonight.
13:04I'm still going out to Broadway and having those sips.
13:07And when it's all said and done, when it's all said and done,
13:12after AJ stops you, I tell you what, you're still gonna hear everybody saying.

13:25What an opportunity for Carmelo Hayes.
13:28He may not look happy, Corey, but if he can somehow pick up a win,
13:32if this match does indeed happen over AJ Styles,
13:35he may earn himself a championship opportunity.
13:36It is a very, very big if, but we have an official.

14:05And we are back live on Friday Night SmackDown from Nashville.
14:14AJ Styles and his return to a WWE ring for
14:18the first time since June against the upstart Carmelo Hayes.
14:21The United States Champion, LA Knight, is at ringside.
14:24This is what's at stake for Hayes, Corey.
14:25Knock off Styles.
14:27LA Knight, he's gonna talk to the general manager to give Carmelo Hayes
14:30the United States Championship match.
14:32Of course, leave it to the megastar LA Knight to sweeten the pot even more,
14:35as though it needed to be any sweeter.
14:37This is Carmelo Hayes, one on one,
14:39with one of the greatest to ever step foot in a ring, the phenomenal AJ Styles.
14:43What Carmelo Hayes could possibly do tonight,
14:46could make all of the difference in his career.
14:48Knocking off a surefire future Hall of Famer like Styles on AJ's first night
14:52back, that is a massive potential feather in the cap of Carmelo Hayes.
14:56Carmelo Hayes tied three wins apiece in his big battle against Andrade,
15:00taking the fight now to AJ Styles, the former two time WWE Champion.
15:04For the shoe on the other foot for a moment, you'd have to imagine that AJ Styles,
15:08freshly coming back to SmackDown, would love an opportunity in the future to become
15:12United States Champion yet again,
15:13particularly at the expense of the man who defeated him at WrestleMania, LA Knight.
15:17And speaking of championships,
15:18you have to wonder, Corey, what Carmelo Hayes thinks about his old running buddy.
15:22Trick Williams winning the NXT Championship over Ethan Page on the debut
15:26of NXT in the CW this past Tuesday night.
15:29Congratulations to everybody at NXT, an unbelievable night we all got to enjoy
15:33together, but right now, Carmelo Hayes, dropkick by Styles.
15:37AJ Styles and Nashville have had a love affair over the years.
15:41It was back all the way in the year 2000, Corey,
15:44where AJ Styles debuted in this city as part of the NWA Anniversary Show.
15:49He won a TNAX title here, an NWA Championship here, tag team titles here as well.
15:54AJ Styles loves wrestling in Nashville.
15:58I was in the building the very first night they were here in Nashville.
16:01But Carmelo Hayes now has an opportunity to really separate himself from the pack.
16:06We talked a lot over recent weeks between Hayes and Andrade and
16:09how crowded the middle of the card is right now,
16:12particularly potential challengers for LA Knight's Championship.
16:15A win tonight would definitely do that for Carmelo Hayes.
16:18Well, you mentioned AJ Styles.
16:19He's a former three-time United States Champion in his own right.
16:23And AJ Styles has enough respect for this industry.
16:28AJ knows he's got to climb his way back up the ladder.
16:31AJ doesn't expect to just walk in the door and
16:33receive a WWE Championship opportunity.
16:36AJ knows that the card, whoa, look out.
16:39And Styles and Carmelo Hayes.
16:43My God, cover by Hayes.
16:45Styles kicks out, but what a move by the uber athletic Carmelo Hayes.
16:49What I was in the process of saying is AJ realizes that the landscape
16:53has changed just in a short few months that AJ's been away.
16:56Carmelo Hayes wants to bear the flag.
16:58Cover here by Hayes.
16:59Floats into the cover and Styles gets the shoulder up.
17:01Now, AJ Styles, he has had some in-ring action over the summer.
17:05The much ballyhooed and publicity-driven matchup, of course,
17:10in pro wrestling NOAH, the big matchup there in Japan.
17:15Styles back in action here in WWE.
17:17We'll make no mistake about it, AJ Styles always keeps his skill set razor sharp.
17:22Whether it be here in WWE or somewhere else around the globe,
17:25my point is AJ was able to take a step back from the madness of WWE.
17:29To recalibrate himself, to find himself, to let his body heal a little bit.
17:33After 20 plus years in the ring,
17:35you're gonna have some nagging injuries, no matter how good you are.
17:38And now he's in the ring with one of the bright young superstars in WWE today.
17:43You may not like his attitude.
17:44And Styles dropped right in front of the United States Champion.
17:50Carmelo Hayes in control, as our matchup continues.
17:55And we are back live on Friday Night SmackDown.
17:58Now, you notice a half crab in here for Carmelo Hayes and AJ Styles.
18:02There is a reason that Carmelo Hayes is now focused on the leg of AJ Styles.
18:07During the matchup, before the break, AJ got hurt.
18:11The doctor checked on him during the commercial break,
18:13checking his left leg and ankle.
18:15Now, as the doc went back to the ringside area, he told Corey and
18:18I that it's a possible sprained ankle for AJ Styles in his return tonight.
18:22So Carmelo Hayes focused his offense now on the leg.
18:26And this is just terrible happenstance for AJ Styles.
18:28Just a few minutes before this matchup began,
18:30you could see how much offense AJ took to Carmelo calling him a quitter.
18:34Styles would rather drop dead in the ring than quit in the middle of a match
18:38ever again.
18:39And Styles now having trouble, of course, bouncing on that leg, but
18:42still able to deliver offense on Carmelo Hayes.
18:46AJ Styles, he looks to reforge his legacy on Friday Night SmackDown as
18:50Carmelo Hayes looks to create his own legacy.
18:53But AJ is in a bad, bad way on one good leg right now.
18:56Yeah, Styles, who once held the WWE Championship for 371 days.
19:01And that made it worse.
19:02He went for the back of the neck, and again, the bad.
19:06And that's the worst part.
19:08AJ at this point may be a danger to himself.
19:10AJ went for a maneuver.
19:11We have watched him perform hundreds, if not thousands of times.
19:15This back breaker, the neck breaker, whatever you wanna call it.
19:18And instead of AJ's leg holding up, it buckled.
19:20This could be catastrophic for the Phenomenal One.
19:23And Charles Robinson now sending AJ to the corner.
19:26And Styles is calling for the bell.
19:27And it's unfortunate, but this is what you gotta do.
19:30And the Dock is gonna head over to the ring.
19:36Referee Charles Robinson saying that this matchup is over after the injury to
19:40Styles' leg.
19:42Well, listen, this is the unfortunate part of our business.
19:46Injuries do happen.
19:48Ring rust may have played a factor.
19:50We talked about how AJ likes to keep his skill set razor sharp at all times.
19:55But a layoff is a layoff.
19:56Your body is gonna react differently.
19:58AJ obviously was not in the same shape that he believed that he was.
20:02Or at least AJ's brain and his body weren't on the same page.
20:05This is where we're speculating.
20:07We think the injury may have occurred.
20:09AJ coming up, yeah, that could have been it right there.
20:14And then this is where everything went south.
20:16AJ unable to support his own weight to drive Hayes down across.
20:21And now AJ Styles visibly upset.
20:23Ladies and gentlemen, AJ Styles is no longer able to compete.
20:28Therefore, the winner of the match is Carmella.
20:32But wait a minute, LA Knight with a BFT to Hayes.
20:35Drops him right on the top of his head.
20:39Well, LA Knight certainly lifted morale here in Nashville, but
20:44I don't know if that was necessary.
20:47Carmelo Hayes went toe to toe with one of the all time greats.
20:52A wild turn of events put him in.
20:54That's what this is all about.
20:55Anything can happen in WWE.
20:56Styles could not finish the match.
20:58Hayes gets the victory.
20:59But this is about as close as you're about to get.
21:02So I guess that means if LA Knight keeps his promise,
21:04Carmelo Hayes is gonna earn himself the United States Championship opportunity.
21:08One would assume that would be the case.
21:10It's a terrible turn of events.
21:12You hate to see AJ Styles, one of the all time greats, go down with an injury.
21:15We'll keep you posted as those updates become available.

21:20But changing gears now to what happens 24 hours from now in Hotlanta.
21:25It is bad blood.
21:27It is a very special start time on Peacock of 6 Eastern and 3 Pacific.

21:37the first time since WrestleMania.
21:39When he teams up with his once arch rival, Cody Rhodes, against the Bloodline.
