00:30There you go wild in the wind a finger point at shore seam
00:49Another face who reminded me Another footstep where I once walked
01:04Take you home
01:10You took my hand, gave me a fringe I'll take my time, soon I'll slowly cry
01:18Give me an inch, I'll make the best move Take all you want and leave all the rest to die
01:26Here you go away
01:32A forward arch, an empty floor
01:39A fading coat I once wore
01:46Oh, a desolation where I once lay
01:50I have seen, in times gone by
01:57I have felt, a different shadow on the wall
02:05A stranglehold on a certain feeling
02:09You took my hand, gave me a fringe I'll take my time, soon I'll slowly cry
02:16Give me an inch, I'll make the best move Take all you want and leave all the rest to die

06:57In Holland's the first windmills appeared in the 12th century
07:02At the peak in the 19th century there were around 9,000 of them
07:09They were really everywhere
07:31All these windmills had different functions
07:44They grounded grain, pressed oil, made paper
07:50Sewed wood
07:54And even drained entire polders
08:02The first polder windmills appeared in the 15th century
08:08A significant part of Holland is below sea level. That means that the Dutch have to pump continuously to keep their feet dry
08:17Naturally water management has been taken over by modern automated systems
08:32Oh
08:39This is one of the 1100 windmills that still exists called the Groenvelder
08:45This mill built around 1529 still contributes to keeping the polder dry
08:52Miller Fred Prince welcomes us and shows us around
09:02As master miller Fred knows everything about windmills
09:13He explains that his mill is a ground sailor
09:18This means you can operate the sails from the ground
09:23In contrast to a stage mill as the world suggests you can operate the sails from the stage
09:32The polder mill brings water to a higher level
09:39They used to be equipped with a paddle wheel
09:48But the invention of the Archimedes screw could bring the water to an unlimited level
09:55But
10:00How does the wind get this device moving
10:07Fred shows us
10:09The sail bar frames are turning the axis with the big cock wheel around
10:14The big cock wheel transmits the movement of the cock wheel of the vertical main axis in the middle of the mill
10:21Downstairs in the middle of his living room Fred shows us the system that turns the Archimedes screw
10:33And now let's run the mill
10:51Here we see the system behind the opposite door
10:54The upper wheel is mounted on the main axis which allows the rotating movement from top to bottom
11:01The cock wheel below is mounted on the Archimedes screw
11:21Now we are draining the polder
11:38But what if the wind direction changes?
11:44Well this mill has a winder system in the cap
11:47But first Fred has to stop the mill
11:54There are heavy wooden brake pads that surrounds the large cock wheel
12:00He activates them with this bar
12:18In the cap heavy duty clamps are mounted around
12:22With a rope and this wheel he can turn the cap to the wind direction
12:27Would Fred be willing to demonstrate it?
12:32Of course he wants that
12:47Now the whole process can start again
13:18Thank you Fred for your hospitality and the fascinating explanation about your beautiful mill
13:28Bye bye Fred
14:47Traditional windmills in Holland are living monuments to the Dutch Golden Age
14:52We step back in time as we visit Zaanse Haans in the Netherlands
15:17Zaanse Haans is a short distance north of Amsterdam and a very popular excursion for tourists
15:31It's an open air museum with historic windmills, traditional houses and artesian workshops
15:38We're here for their star attraction and provide a close up look inside two of their fabulous windmills
15:46Visitors could easily spend a whole day here enjoying traditional Dutch culture, craftsmanship and ingenuity
15:54In addition to a windmill museum, the village boasts a captivating assortment of well preserved historic buildings
16:01Including charming shops that showcase artesians at work
16:05Demonstrating age old techniques from wooden shoe carving to cheese making
16:11Just as the park was opening, we head straight to a historic windmill making paint dyes
16:17And then one functioning as a sawmill
16:21Not all windmills are open to the public and one we stopped at would only accept tour groups
16:27But the two we saw were fabulous and showcased two very different applications in function and design
16:34And I'll provide some historical information on each
16:40Our first windmill is Decat and is believed to be the last remaining paint windmill in the world still in operation
16:48The top of the windmill rotates to turn its sails into the wind
16:53It's original construction dates back to 1664
16:57It caught fire in 1782 and was restored shortly afterwards
17:03Unfortunately the upper mill was demolished in 1904 keeping only the gallery below
17:10The upper section was then rebuilt in 1959 along with its drive mechanism
17:15Turning it back into the functioning mill we see today
17:25It specializes in creating powder for dyes and chalk for paints
17:31Raw coloring material is imported and chopped up in a tub using chisels
17:37The smaller chips are then crushed down by the large grinding wheels
17:52We head upstairs to see its large wooden gears rotating in operation
17:58I was fascinated by them
18:31And we get to go out on deck
18:47The sails are adjustable to help control the speed of the mill
19:02This large wheel is used to rotate the top to face the sails into the wind
19:09Imagine in the 17th century around 900 windmills were along the river Zan
19:16And it was considered one of the world's first industrialized areas
19:21Claude Monet painted here in 1871
19:27Over there is the sawmill we visit next
19:32Over there is the sawmill we visit next
20:02Over there is the sawmill we visit next
20:24The sawmill was very important in Dutch history
20:28In the mid-1500s the Netherlands region was harshly dominated by the Spanish Empire
20:34In 1594 a Dutch farmer invented the first wind-powered sawmill
20:39His ingenuity was improved upon and sawmills began cutting logs into boards at a fast rate
20:46The Netherlands built ships quicker and at half the cost of their rivals
20:51Which could hold more cargo, sail faster and required less crew
20:56The Netherlands eventually gained independence
20:59Became one of the world's largest naval powers in the 17th century
21:03And dominated maritime trade with the Dutch East India Company
21:08The wind-powered sawmill played a crucial role in enabling this prosperous period in Dutch history
21:15And I was excited to see one
21:19This sawmill is a faithful reconstruction of an older mill built in 1680 but demolished in 1942
21:31Fortunately a windmill expert made detailed drawings of it before its demise
21:37The drawings were preserved and 63 years later became the blueprint for its reconstruction
21:44Building started in 2005 and took two years to complete
21:49Today it stands as an operational facility sawing on a commission basis
21:56Tree trunks are left in the water for one to five years to draw out sap
22:02Making the wood less prone to bending or cracking when being sawn
22:07A windlass with ropes is used to hoist the trunks out of the water and onto a carriage
22:14A large ratchet wheel pulls the carriage with the trunk through the saw
22:25This model shows how a crankshaft is used to create the up and down sawing motion
22:33With favorable wind conditions each mill could saw 20 logs a day staffed with five people
22:41Over time steam-powered sawmills took over as they were not prone to weather conditions and required less maintenance
22:55It's wonderful to see these iconic structures preserved
22:59So visitors like us and future generations can witness and appreciate traditional Dutch engineering in operation
