Iswaran to serve 12-month jail term after deciding not to appeal

Singapore's former transport minister S. Iswaran will start serving his 12-month jail sentence after revealing that he was not appealing the sentence handed down by the High Court on October 3.

The 62-year-old was accompanied by a relative as he walked up to court to surrender himself ahead of the 4pm deadline on Monday (Oct 7).

00:08after revealing that he was not appealing the sentence handed down by the High Court

00:13The 62-year-old was accompanied by a relative as he walked up to court to surrender himself
00:19ahead of the 4pm deadline on Monday.
00:22In a statement on Facebook, Iswaran said, among others, that he accepted as a minister
00:27what he did was wrong and took full responsibility for his actions.
00:31He also apologised unreservedly to all Singaporeans.
00:35Iswaran, who was a cabinet member for 13 years and has held the trade, communications and
00:41transport portfolios, had initially said he was innocent and would fight to clear his
00:45name.
00:46He, however, pleaded guilty last week to four counts of improperly receiving gifts and one
00:52of obstructing justice.
00:54The former minister faced a total of 35 charges, two of which were corruption-related but were
00:59later amended to charges of receiving gifts while a public servant.
