00:00St. John's done under new management, but Simo Valicari taking this match in from the Ibrox stands
00:05How would Rangers respond after their own European humbling a 4-1 home defeat by Lyon? Commentary goes with Paul Mitchell
00:13Rangers may feel a little bruised after they failed to tame Lyon midweek
00:17But they know they can't afford any slip-ups against the St. John's side under new management
00:23Simo Valicari is St. John's since 28th full-time manager
00:26And the first not to be either from Scotland or Northern Ireland
00:30He'll be watching on from the main stand. Andy Kirk will be the man pitch side
00:36Rangers have two changes in the loss against Lyon. Tom Lawrence who picked up a hamstring injury is out
00:42Connor Barron drops to the bench. Nicholas Raska and Ross McCausland both in the starting XI
00:50For St. Johnson two strikers back from suspension
00:53Benji Kimbioka is straight back into the starting XI. He's joined by Aaron Essel
00:58Kyle Cameron who picked up a hamstring injury against Celtic and Graeme Carey who drops on to the bench
01:08Chris McPherson alongside the new boss Simo Valicari
01:14What they've made of the opening minutes here
01:16Those Rangers come forward. Essel
01:19Well, he's trying to hit it behind the goal there. Rangers have their first corner
01:25Lovely floated ball. McCausland had made a fine run
01:31While Robin Proper yet to score for Rangers can be a danger
01:3611 goals with 20 and just over a hundred appearances. That's an easy putt chance at the back
01:42And Rangers should be ahead. Cedrillo Dessos
01:46Will score in the League Cup against St. Johnston and really should have been on target here. Found himself free
01:53Just couldn't angle the ball in
01:55Broke beautifully to cross the goalkeeper and St. Johnston you have to say get away with one there
02:02There's almost 70% possession in the opening to this game and they have a free-kick. Dangerous position
02:12Demondi puts the thumbs up. Sprangler didn't think that was a free-kick
02:20Tavernier would be the right foot. Czerny would be the left. Two walls. Tavernier deflected
02:26Well fair to say one or two around Ibrox thought that went in
02:30And fair to say one or two including the commentator thought it took a deflection. It should have resulted
02:36In a corner. Rangers thought so
02:42Well, Steve Clarke, he's got a busy ten days coming up. Cedrillo Dessos
02:49Demondi tried the shot, flicked it off his own ankle. Bayrami on the angle. McCausland, he's looked lively
02:57McCausland into the middle. Czerny, too many bodies there
03:02Didn't seem to break back off. Jack Sanders
03:05Have to pick himself back up again. Getting ready to defend the corner. Good play by Cedrillo Dessos
03:11Didn't seem to break back off. Jack Sanders
03:14Have to pick himself back up again. Getting ready to defend the corner. Good play again from McCausland
03:27The corner indeed. Solid header away. Dessos felt he was pushed at the back post
03:33Here's Tavernier
03:36Bayrami
03:38It's deflected
03:40Sanders tries to get there. Souter brings it down. Plays it on to Tavernier. Good snapshot
03:46Well, one and two inquiring
03:48Voices from Rangers to ask if there should be something more here
03:52Up against Dessos
03:54Clear jersey pull. Well, if you don't want to have a penalty given against you for that, don't do it
03:59Clear jersey pull
04:04Smith moves out to proper
04:06Bayrami
04:07Cerny
04:09Rangers in full flow again. Cerny inside. Diamondi. Touch turn. Sanders again
04:17Good football from Rangers
04:19Excellent defending
04:21Thrompson, Johnston
04:23Mann was taken first. Ball was taken second
04:26Three kick every day
04:28McKenzie, Kirk
04:30This was lovely play. They touched the turn but Sanders made sure
04:34Sinclair didn't have any work to do
04:35Sinclair didn't have any work to do
04:45Cerny tries to get a bit of Raymond back to Tavernier. Raymond had to be careful. Made the challenge well
04:51Raska
04:53Cerny
04:55Ball back on to the right foot
05:02Cerny
05:03That's lovely. Tries to angle it in
05:07Well, he missed one mid-week. He does not miss that one
05:11That's a stunning strike
05:13Back left Cerny
05:15Curls it into the net
05:17Rangers are one ahead
05:19Ross Sinclair is far from impressed
05:21He's in a minority
05:23And Ibrox, the Rangers fans, loved what they saw
05:27Well, he got it through the legs. Assent Sprangler
05:30Matt Smith tried to close him down
05:32There wasn't a lot of room to get it right
05:35He didn't just get it right. He got it perfect
05:38Into the side net. It flies
05:40Rangers one
05:42Sid Johnston 0
05:47That's been given away
05:49Now McKenzie, Kirk. He's going to try and get it past Jephte
05:52He's got a bit of pace about him
05:54He tries the shot. Knew he was running out of room
05:57It was packed with ambition
05:59But well off target
06:02One goal so far tonight. Back left Cerny
06:07Sid Johnston looking for a way back
06:10Kipioka
06:14Kipioka loses it out. Cerny
06:18No, it didn't go forward
06:20As quickly as the Rangers fans wanted
06:22Barron caught by McPherson
06:25Baggi picks out Cerny
06:27Cerny moves one way, then the other
06:31Lewis Neilson. Didn't close him down
06:34Back left Cerny
06:35Makes Sid Johnston pay
06:37And sends Rangers two ahead
06:39And writes his name again on the score sheet
06:43Well the referee allowed play to continue
06:46Neilson was in position. Twisted one way, then the other
06:50Back left Cerny
06:52He's got a great goal with his left
06:54Now gets one with his right. Popped it enough
06:56To get it past Ross Sinclair
06:58And Rangers extend their lead
07:00To lead by two to nil
07:09It's a mistake from Proper. It's a rare one
07:12Sid Ibe
07:14Well that's why Sid Johnston wanted him back
07:16From suspension
07:17Four goals in eight this season
07:19Including two in the win
07:21Their only win against Killie in the league
07:28Saints last Scottish Premiership goal against
07:31Rangers at Ibrox Cape
07:33In 2018. Can they change it?
07:35It's Mackenzie Kirk
07:37Buckland with a save
07:39Kipioka was screaming for the ball
07:42At the back post
07:44Mackenzie Kirk
07:46With a simple ball on the inside
07:48Went for the shot himself
07:52Corner. Barron says play it there
07:54And he very nearly did
07:56Smith away
07:59Kipioka
08:01Taken down by Hadji
08:05Hadji might have been slipping as he went down
08:08But it was a yellow card
08:10On his return
08:13Alexanders and Cammy McPherson
08:15It was a little bit worse than what the referee thought
08:18Well he slid his
08:20Leg out. In fact from that angle
08:22It looked like it was going to go in
08:23In fact from that angle
08:25It looks worse
08:27And VAR Steve McLean
08:29Diggie Potter
08:33But the referee's been called over
08:38This is the more damning angle
08:40He's come over the ball
08:42He's caught the shin
08:44It's a question. Is it reckless?
08:46I'd be surprised if he isn't sent off here
08:53It was good to be back for a while
08:55For Ioannis Hadji
08:57Hadn't played for Rangers in over a year
08:59Appearance
09:01Number 100 earns
09:03His first red card as a Rangers player
09:07Well a sympathetic applause
09:09But it was the right call in the end by VAR
09:17Johnson. Try the drive
09:19Sanders
09:23The Argent's calling for it
09:25Back to Sanders
09:27On to Smith
09:29Now it's on the angle
09:31Taken down by Clark
09:34And Nicky Clark
09:36The former Rangers man
09:38The last St. Johnston player
09:40To score against Rangers
09:42Is denied by the offside flag
09:44He can't quite believe it
09:46St. Johnston thought they had a way back into the game
09:48Great cross in from Smith
09:49He has gone just momentarily early
09:58Tavernier
10:00Queuing up to clear it
10:02For St. Johnston
10:04Casemiro
10:06Casemiro
10:08Showing off from the edge of the area
10:10Nearly a stunning strike for a third
10:12A man from Amsterdam
10:14Not a noted goalscorer
10:16But he hit that beautifully
10:17Good save for Watson-Clark
10:19Got across well
10:21Turned it behind
10:23A different night
10:25But a similar tale
10:27A seventh straight win for Rangers against St. Johnston
10:29They lasted that back in August 93
10:31To November 97
10:33Saints split the Edinburgh clubs
10:35At the bottom of the table
10:37But it's Vaclav Cerny's night
10:39It was his double that was enough
10:41Panis Hadjoni's 100th appearance
10:43For Rangers
10:45Earned a red card
10:47Cerny the hero
10:49Finished Rangers 2
10:51St. Johnston 0
10:53Wow
10:55I still expected more today
10:57But it's an important win
10:59It's a deserved win
11:01So that's the most important thing
11:03Also at the end of a series of games
11:05Every three days
11:07So it's always the period that you see
11:09That teams get tired also
11:11Players get tired
11:13So it's important to take those wins
11:15And I think a very positive point
11:17It's important that we continue in that way
11:19There's a lot to work with
11:21With the team
11:23We've got pace in the front line
11:25We've got midfield players
11:27Who can deal with the ball
11:29We changed the shape at half-time
11:31Tonight they're back four
11:33We thought we dealt with that pretty well
11:35But we made some mistakes
11:37And we got punished
11:39It tends to happen against the better teams
11:41But overall I think there's a lot
11:43That we can take from the game
11:45And for the group themselves
11:47And hopefully that will turn for us
11:49What a week for Vaclav Cerny
11:51Last weekend making his feelings known
11:53In no uncertain terms
11:55To the Rangers fans
11:57In the match against Hibs
11:59Then midweek of course
12:01Missing that huge chance against Lyon
12:03Today two goals
12:05The hero of the hour
12:07And Cammy Bell
12:09A real bit of flair about these goals
12:11Yeah listen he was brilliant today
12:13Again this individual piece of skill here
12:15Just takes it through the players legs
12:17In the top corner
12:19He uses the two defenders here as you can see
12:21Just the gap in between them
12:23To guide it past Ross Sinclair in the goals
12:25But individual brilliance from Cerny there
12:27Absolutely fantastic
12:29And gave Rangers the perfect start
12:31The bit of skill he's been doing his whole life
12:33By the looks of things now
12:35Yeah absolutely now you see
12:37He's wide here, he gets on the ball
12:39Plays inside the young Connor Boren
12:41And just keeps the momentum going
12:43Hadji gets the ball out of his feet
12:45And I really like this pass
12:47That he's given to get at the defender
12:49The defender probably does well here
12:51In the sense of showing him outside
12:53But I think he gets enough pace on the shot
12:55To go past the keeper
12:57I think it was just a wee initial touch
12:59On the defender's ankle
13:01That sort of maybe guides it away from the keeper
13:03As you can see here
13:05So there you go, he tucks it in nicely
13:07And good afternoon all round for him
13:09The pace of that pass Jonathan
13:11I think it just, as Niall says
13:13It makes his mind up
13:15It gets him faced up one view
13:17Interesting day for Giannis Hadji
13:19So much chat about him
13:21And his exile from the Rangers squad
13:23Back in suddenly
13:25And big moment there
13:27But a big moment to forget here
13:29Yeah it was
13:31And again there was just that excitement
13:33Of being back involved
13:35Coming back on at half time
13:37But this is one moment you want to forget
13:39I think it's clumsy more than anything
13:41He's overstretching, trying to play the ball
13:43He's going in at pace
13:45But an absolute red card for me
13:47As a young player
13:49And it could have been a really nasty one
13:51Hopefully it's not
13:53But yes, certainly for me
13:55A clear red card
13:57Certainly not the way he would have wanted
13:59His Rangers return to end up with
14:01Giannis Hadji sent off for Rangers
14:03And you wonder a little bit Niall
14:05How this game might have gone
14:07Rangers obviously down to 10 men
14:09And St Johnston
14:11They did have chances in this match
14:13Will they be kicking themselves to an extent?
14:15I think so
14:17I think they're kicking very well
14:19Obviously in the second half
14:21They get a wee bit more comfortable
14:23With maybe more runs going forward
14:25Young Kirk does well here
14:27Looks up, he probably catches the shot cleanly
14:29But as you've seen there
14:31Two other players in great positions
14:33He had the cut back on
14:35And then he had the ball to the back post
14:37For a simple tapping
14:39And it could have been a different story
14:41With going into the last stages of the game
14:43With Rangers getting the man sent off
14:45Here's another chance as well
14:47Offside
14:49It was just offside
14:51It doesn't get much tighter than that does it?
14:53No, look it's very, very tight
14:55And as Niall said
14:57These fine moments, you need to score
14:59When you get the opportunities
15:01When you go to Ibrox
15:03And again that was a really tight call
15:05But it looks as if Nicky Clarke was just offside
15:07How would you sum up the Rangers performance
15:09Overall, briefly?
15:11Not vintage, not vintage
15:13But again it was three points
15:15And I think at this moment in time
15:17In terms of this season overall
15:19You're a former Aberdeen star of course
15:21And obviously they've grown great guns
15:23Do you see Rangers as being the biggest challenges
15:25To Celtic this season?
15:27Do you think Aberdeen, do they have a chance?
15:29With my Aberdeen head on
15:31I'm hoping to see Aberdeen up and close
15:33And challenging
15:35They've had the perfect start
15:37International break, players can go away
15:39And take time off, recover
15:41Players can go away with their respective countries
15:43And get confidence from that as well
15:45And I think if they're in there about
15:47I'm hoping for an interesting end of the season
15:49For sure, with Aberdeen being involved
15:51Is it pie in the sky, Cammy?
15:53Do you still expect Rangers to be the main challenges
15:55To Celtic?
15:57I expect Rangers to be the main challenges
15:59But listen, we never know
16:01Aberdeen are in fantastic form at the moment
16:03And they'll want to continue that as well
16:05Cammy, Niall, thank you very much indeed
16:07Tonight the William Hill Premiership table
16:09Looks like this
16:11Celtic and Aberdeen go into the international break
16:13At the top, both with 100% records
16:15They meet at Celtic Park a week on Saturday
16:17Heart of Midlothian remain bottom
16:19On two points after eight games played
16:21So a magnificent seven Premiership wins
16:24Out of seven for Celtic and Aberdeen
16:26Time for us to ride off into the sunset
16:28Until next time
16:30From all of us on the Sporting team
16:32Goodnight
16:47Goodnight
