00:00And have your kids been impressed by anything you've done as much as the fact that you're on
00:04Bluey? No that's pretty much it. Welcome to Ms Mojo and today we're looking at amazing
00:09behind the scenes stories and facts about Bluey that made us appreciate it even more.
00:17Wow that was a weird dream. Number 10. The Australian Peppa Pig. Okay one day there were
00:24these three little pigs called Jingo, Gruy and uh Jimmy or something. But Jimmy was on a team
00:29building course for work so we won't see him much. There's no denying that Bluey is a nationwide hit
00:35but it may owe some of its success to another preschool cartoon. Creator Joe Brum cites one
00:40of its inspirations as Peppa Pig, the British animated series about the titular anthropomorphic
00:45pig. The program has become popular in the US and inspired kids to start using more British
00:50terminology. Brum hoped to elicit a similar feeling but with a more Australian twist.
00:55Bluey, can you say toilet instead of dunny please? Why can't we say dunny? Is it a rude word?
01:01No it's not a rude word. I just prefer toilet. Would the queen say dunny? Uh no. Given the
01:07show's impact we'd say he succeeded in achieving that and so much more. Indeed,
01:12Bluey has opened the door to teaching its audience more about Australia's daily culture.
01:16Children from other parts of the globe have even started using Aussie slang more often.
01:21Can I help you? I wish you could mate. Number nine, the happy accident. It's a boy! No it's a girl.
01:29I mean it's a girl! Despite how iconic Bluey has become there's occasionally been questions
01:35about her gender. While she's clearly referred to as a girl, many younger fans seem to think
01:39that Bluey is a boy. It's widely been said that this is due to the color blue being traditionally
01:44associated with that gender. Oh yeah because he's blue. I'm a girl. Oh yeah I knew that.
01:51However, rather than try to correct viewers, executive producer Daley Pearson views this
01:56confusion as a quote happy accident. I hesitate to correct people especially kids who say I really
02:02love him or I mean you know so they do I think because kids also just see themselves in the show.
02:07The way he sees it, many audiences see a bit of themselves in Bluey no matter her gender.
02:11So he'd prefer to simply let the kids have that personal connection with the character as they
02:16see fit. I guess we can go back to pizza girls. Yeah. So there's one supreme pizza with extra
02:23pineapple. Number eight, celebrity endorsements. The Bluey credit surprised me a little bit. Okay
02:30I didn't know this. The most important one. Not only has Bluey managed to touch the hearts of
02:34children and adults, but it's also caught the eyes of several celebrities as well.
02:39Big names in the industry and even local Australian legends have been vocal about how
02:43they and their families adore the Heelers and company. Whales travel extremely long distances
02:49into warm waters to have their babies. Oh you're so cute. A few of them including Natalie Portman,
02:57Lane Beachley, Anthony Field, Eva Mendez and Lin-Manuel Miranda have even gotten a chance
03:02to guest star. I was honored to be asked. I think I recorded my piece at three in the morning my
03:07time. It's two lines and I'll never top it. And those are but a few names on the list. It warms
03:13our hearts to hear so many well-known faces lending their talents to Bluey and makes us eager
03:17to find out what other celebrities would like to give it a go. Now put your weight onto your arms,
03:23lean forward and raise that right leg off the ground. Oh you got no chance love. Number seven,
03:30Chili and Bandit's first encounter. Um, why does it need dad? Well there's some dispute,
03:36but let's just say at a party in London. There's some debate over how Chili and Bandit officially
03:42met, but we can at least confirm when their voice actors first did. In 2022, the voices behind the
03:48Heeler parents, Dave McCormack and Melanie Zanetti were invited on The Tonight Show to talk about
03:53Bluey with Jimmy Fallon. They met face to face two days prior, for the first time in four years since
03:59their show began. So we record separately. Yeah. Um, we live in different cities and I travel a lot
04:05for work. Yeah. So this was the first time. How cool is that? It was wild. I know I thought it'd
04:10be all of us sitting around a table, you know like in the movies when they're making a TV show. Yeah.
04:15Before that, they recorded individually and Zanetti had to travel a lot for work.
04:20This is surprising considering how much chemistry their characters have,
04:23but it makes them finally becoming acquainted in person much more heartwarming.
04:29That's mom. Don't listen to him. It wasn't me. Don't listen to her. It was. Number six,
04:37banned or censored episodes. Okay, that's a wrap kids. Come on, unclip. No, not yet. You haven't
04:43had the baby. While Bluey is typically wholesome and harmless fun, it has carefully made some
04:49risque jokes that only the parents would catch. Interestingly, a few of these moments were
04:53censored or banned. One particular scene was removed from the episode exercise due to accusations
04:59of fat shaming. Why did you say ah man? Uh, I just need to do some exercise. Tell me about it.
05:07Plus the entirety of the episode dad baby was banned in the US, never premiering on Disney+.
05:13They didn't provide a formal reason for the latter decision. You say if you're going to do
05:18something, do it properly. But it's safe to assume the subject matter, bandit being pregnant,
05:23and a certain birthing scene may have been too much for Disney to handle. Still, major credit
05:28to the show for taking chances. Look, I'm keen to get it done, but she wants to keep her options
05:33open. But I don't know. Do we want any more of these things running around? Number five, rusty.
05:40That's me. Oh, okay. Where's your hat, recruit Russell? I forgot it, Sergeant. You can use my
05:47This may come as a shock, but Bluey almost wasn't the star of the show.
05:54Before our favorite blue heeler was brought into the picture, another kid was going to be in the
05:58spotlight, Rusty the red kelpie. One of the dogs creator Joe Brum had growing up was, you guessed
06:04it, a kelpie named Rusty. Yeah, Rusty's my favorite character. I really like him. I think he's, he's a
06:10cool little dude. You know, he's fun to write for. He's so kind of like accepting and innocent,
06:17and but quite tough as well. He was particularly fond of the pup. So he originally planned to name
06:22the cartoon after him. Bluey was chosen instead in the end, but rusty is alive and well as her
06:28friend and classmate. He's even gotten a few moments to shine. We'll never forget his ambition
06:33for cricket, his dad being in the army, and his playing mums and dads with Indy to name a few.
06:38Number four, the original pilot.
06:46Before becoming a smash hit, Bluey had two pilots. One was The Weekend in 2017, but before that was
06:53an unnamed roughly one minute long short. The latter shows Bandit pushing Bluey on the swing
06:58while playing on his phone. He ends up pushing her all the way around until she knocks him onto the
07:03ground. It received some backlash over its edgy humor and didn't see the light of day for years.
07:09And the thing was the swing went all the way around. So it was like there's a little bit more
07:16family guy or South Park to it than Bluey is now.
07:18Meanwhile, The Weekend secured the show's future and was even adapted into its own episode.
07:23What's today kiddo? It's The Weekend.
07:26That's right. How many games should we play? This many.
07:31Whoa, okay, that's doable.
07:33We admit the original pilot seems more surreal compared to the final product,
07:37but it's still a vital part of the series history that shouldn't be forgotten.
07:41Number three, production schedule.
07:44So if I want Bluey to give us a little wave, I'm gonna pull her arm up, go to a new frame,
07:49pull her arm down, and I just keep doing that until I have a nice finished animation.
07:56It takes a talented team to make a cartoon as phenomenal as Bluey,
08:00and anyone who's worked in animation knows it's no easy task.
08:04Daley Pearson, the studio's executive producer,
08:06confirmed that it takes up to five months to finish a single episode.
08:10Slow moving train that you can't stop. So you can, it's like a sushi train.
08:16You can kind of play with it as it's going along, but once it's gone, you can't.
08:20Yeah, you sort of blow up the whole tracks to get it back.
08:24The four major teams behind the productions work parallel to each other to ensure that every
08:28roughly seven minute adventure is special and thoroughly polished.
08:32Aspects can seemingly also overlap each other,
08:35giving them a chance to craft multiple episodes at once.
08:38It takes a team of animators four weeks to do one episode.
08:42David McCormack and Melanie Zanetti have notably revealed that they often record
08:46four episodes in roughly two hours.
08:48It takes a while to produce, but the results speak for themselves.
08:52Number two, the show's inspiration.
08:55Flowers may bloom again, but a person never has a chance to be young again.
09:01What does that mean?
09:05It means it's shower time.
09:09Undoubtedly, the biggest reason for Bluey's success
09:12is how relatable it is to kids and adults.
09:14It's even more so considering the creator based it off of his own family.
09:18For example, our titular pup is named after Brum's actual childhood Blue Heeler dog.
09:23The concept for its part took inspiration from his two daughters.
09:27They are interested in playing make-believe games,
09:32and also reenacting the events of the day, you know, very seemingly mundane events.
09:40And that seemed like material enough to make a show.
09:43He especially paid attention to how his girls played and the games they came up with,
09:47which helped inform the show's unstructured playtime.
09:50Mom, watch this!
09:51Watch what?
09:54You guys are crazy!
09:55My turn!
09:58You kids just go about it, don't you?
10:00There was one game, however, that didn't make the final cut,
10:04Pinchy, where they pretended to be crabs and, yes, pinched each other.
10:08For the parents' sake, it was changed to Tickle Crabs.
10:11Tickle!
10:11Oh no!
10:13Oh no, Tickle Crabs!
10:14I must have brought them back from the beach with me.
10:18Trust us, it's better this way.

10:39Number 1.
10:40Bluey and Bingo's Voices
10:49There's one major behind-the-scenes mystery that leaves fans curious.
10:52Who are the voices behind Bluey and Bingo?
10:55The sisters' actors are left uncredited in each episode, except for their adult voices.
11:00This is done intentionally, for a good reason.
11:03The young actors are kids who are close to the show's crew slash production staff,
11:07and the choice has been made to shield them, affording them privacy.
11:10You've got a whole bunch of brothers and sisters who've got your back,
11:15and your mum and I are behind you all the way,
11:17because we're a family, and you mean the world to us.
11:21In fact, this is generally true for the little ones lending their voices to the cartoon.
11:26Given the hardships and drama child actors can go through, this is a smart decision.
11:30The idea of them facing the pitfalls of fame would break our hearts.
11:34If they're watching now, let's all say thank you to them
11:37for bringing such amazing characters to life.
11:40Any wackadoo production secrets we may have missed?
11:43Let us know in the comments.
11:44It's okay, Bluey, you won't miss out.
11:47When you get back, we can...
11:48We can...
