00:00Medieval device against women's chatter, Skold's bridle. Skold's bridle is an
00:06object invented in the 1500s in Britain and then spread throughout Europe. An
00:12iron mask tightly fitting on the head was put on women as a punishment for
00:19rude chatter and arguing. It was impossible to talk in it. A bell was
00:25attached to the top to attract attention. Instead of metal torture
00:31devices reminiscent of the Branks of Yore, Love is creating 100 homemade
00:36headpieces that focus on the idea of amplifying women's voices. One of them is
00:43a simple pair of safety glasses with a noise-making party favor attached. This
00:49was the image that Love saw posted on Instagram last fall during the Brett
00:54Kavanaugh US Senate confirmation hearings. It evoked such a strong
01:00reaction in her that she decided to create an art project. Another is a box
01:06like creation with chattering teeth to evoke the idea that through the ages
01:13women have been reputed to engage in too much chatter. Love said all of her
01:19designs are meant to counter the belief, which she thinks is pervasive even today,
01:25that women talk too much, that they cackle when they laugh, that their voices
01:30are shrill.
