00:00Israel continues air and ground operations in Lebanon and strikes in Gaza.
00:05Refugee camp got hit with 18 dead, including children.
00:07Still no ceasefire in sight.
00:10MEPs have held a debate on the crisis facing the European automotive industry.
00:20After dairy products, China decided to impose sanctions on European brandy, raising duties
00:25by up to 39 percent in retaliation for the electric car tariffs.
00:31The International Monetary Fund warns about European complacency and urges competitiveness.
00:43The Israel army struck Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon on Wednesday, as it continues
00:48ground and air operations in the area.
00:52And 185 Hezbollah targets have been struck, with soldiers on the ground killing members
00:56of the group in close-quarter combat, according to Israeli officials.
01:02The strike was a response to recent rocket attacks by Hezbollah during the night.
01:06The acting leader of the Iran-backed militant group, Sheikh Naim Qasem, claims that Hezbollah's
01:11military capabilities remain intact despite weeks of Israeli bombardment.
01:16The group will soon name a new leader to replace Hassan Nasrallah, who was killed by an Israeli
01:21strike last month.
01:22Qasem said and insisted a ceasefire will not happen unless Israel withdraws from Gaza.
01:28Meanwhile, Israeli's latest bombardment of central and northern Gaza has killed at least
01:3318 people, including five children, Palestinian health officials said on Wednesday.
01:38Two strikes hit tents for displaced people in Nusayrat and Beresh refugee camps in central
01:42Gaza.
01:43According to Palestinian news reports, the strike hit a crowd who were waiting to collect
01:47water.
01:49The bodies of some of the victims, including three children, were brought to the Al-Aqsa
01:53Martyrs Hospital in the town of Deir al-Balaw.
01:56Blood continues to spill in the region, with no apparent sign of a ceasefire.
02:05According to Viktor Orban, Ukraine cannot win the war and the European Union should
02:09aim for a ceasefire between Kiev and Moscow.
02:13The Hungarian Prime Minister is in Strasbourg, presenting the priorities of the Hungarian
02:17Council Presidency to the European Parliament.
02:21His press conference was interrupted by a member of a Hungarian opposition party.
02:28He threw fake banknotes on the PM, calling him a traitor.
02:35Orban, who is often criticized for being supportive of Russia, told a room packed with reporters
02:40that better communication with President Putin was needed to get a ceasefire.
02:45Quizzed by Euronews, he conceded that in the meantime EU countries could keep up their
02:50military aid to Ukraine on a national basis.
02:53Those who think what we are doing as European Union is good and strategically right, let's
03:01support the Ukrainians.
03:02Don't disagree with that like Hungary, we don't.
03:06That belongs to the national government.
03:09The Hungarian Prime Minister also called for stricter controls to detect migrants at the
03:13borders and hotspots outside the EU.
03:16And he doubled down on the request for his country to be exempt from the new EU migration
03:21policy.
03:25He also still seems ready to send refugees to Brussels to protest against it.
03:30We will respect the European law, we will respect all the regulations, but if somebody
03:38who gets an asylum in Hungary would like to come to Brussels, you know, we are ready to
03:42have them.
03:45Hungary's presidency started in July, but their diplomats have been facing boycotts
03:49and isolation in the EU institutions from the start.
03:53Parliament's rapporteur for the situation, Hungary, believes Orbán is actively undermining
03:58the common European asylum system.
04:03He uses the rhetoric just, you know, to get more, a stronger position, to blackmail in
04:12order to get EU funding.
04:15It's a lot of rhetorics.
04:18And Orbán's biggest prize for the Hungarian presidency?
04:22To get Romania and Bulgaria fully into the Schengen area, apparently.
04:30MEPs have held a debate on the state of the automotive industry as car manufacturers across
04:37the continent continue to face factory closures brought on by sluggish sales.
04:44A key focus of the debate was the decline in demands for European electric vehicles,
04:50a trend that's been exacerbated by rising competition from Chinese manufacturers.
04:56Car sales in the EU are below the pre-COVID level, while China has become the largest
05:02market.
05:03Also, in the third market, the demand has shifted towards zero emission vehicles.
05:09We have set a clear framework for transition to zero emission vehicles with 100% zero emission
05:14cars targeted by 2035.
05:17But critics say the EU's 2035 target is impossible to meet, arguing there is not enough funding
05:24or infrastructure.
05:26A resolution on the issue will be put to a vote in a future session.
05:57French truck drivers are blocking a main motorway in Alsace in protest against the
06:02potential introduction of a heavy goods vehicles tax from 2027.
06:07The new tax, which comes at a cost of 15 cents per kilometre, aims to reduce transit traffic
06:13on the A35 motorway, which sees up to 10,000 trucks pass along it each day.
06:20Many of these lorries use the Alsace motorway to avoid paying the high eco-taxes already
06:25in place on German motorways.
06:30Those working in the transit industry say the addition of this new tax would threaten
06:34the survival of some businesses.
06:51Councilors are set to vote on the proposal on the 21st of October.
06:59The International Monetary Fund is recommending that Europe sticks together in the face of
07:03fragmentation within the single EU market in order to avoid a financial crisis.
07:09As the world grapples with crises emerging one after another, such as Covid and the full-scale
07:13invasion in Ukraine, managing director Kristalina Georgieva says that Europe needs to start
07:19preparing for other shocks to make sure it's not left behind.
07:22It is important for Europe to stand tall on its achievements.
07:29One massively well-performed task to free itself from dependency on Russian oil and
07:38gas.
07:39It has been done remarkably well.
07:42Europe can be proud of it.
07:45Europe can be proud of the attention it pays to the big challenges of today and tomorrow
07:51– climate, demography, technology and, a critical one, fairness in society.
08:00Georgieva says that Europe needs to start by reducing bureaucracy and administrative
08:05inefficiency and to prioritise developing businesses that can compete competitively
08:09on a global level.
08:11Europe should be careful not to be complacent.
08:15The world is moving very rapidly.
08:19Attention to European competitiveness is so important.
08:23Right now, Europe is rightly focused on the immediate task in hand – bring inflation
08:31down.
08:33Big success so far – don't lose sight of data if you need to calibrate appropriately
08:41steps taken in the future.
08:43And very important for Europe – reignite growth.
08:47If growth remains as anemic as it is now, it would be hard for Europe to achieve the
08:56objectives that people here aspire for – a digital, green economy that benefits people
09:05and offers opportunities for businesses.
09:08Liv Stroud, in Berlin, for Euronews.
09:23Beijing brandy is going to face sanctions from China.
09:28From Friday onwards, Beijing intends to apply temporary anti-dumping measures against spirits
09:33– mainly cognac.
09:37Custom duties for EU companies could reach 39% – an increase that will be a painful
09:42blow for the sector.
09:47Today is really a new reality in that sense because it's going to bite.
09:51It's going to bite for the companies at a very short notice, as I said, on Friday.
09:56It's going to be significant amounts in the sense that China is our second largest export
10:02market and in 2023 we exported spirits of around 800 million euros, 90% of that in value
10:09was constituted by brandies, mainly cognac.
10:12Officially, Beijing claims to have proof and good reason for implementing these sanctions.
10:17However, China's decision comes just days after the EU confirmed that it would impose
10:22additional custom duties on Chinese electric cars – a surcharge that has divided the
10:27member states.
10:28China's retaliation seeks to further fracture the Block of 27, as it already planned similar
10:34measures against European dairy products and pork.
10:39Although the term trade war has not been mentioned yet, some MEPs are already calling to present
10:45a united front against the Asian giant.
10:49We need to think as one block.
10:53If we do not act like that, finding the necessary internal compromises, China now, but also
11:00in the future, and maybe other parts of the world will just win any competitiveness, contrast
11:09with us.
11:10We need to use the power of the European market and this is one test for European unity.
11:17I think that without unity we are doomed.
11:20Each of our member states cannot stand a trade war with China.
11:26The European Commission is going to challenge China's decision before the World Trade Organization.
11:31The institution asserts that these measures don't have grounds.
11:38Negotiations between two sides are expected to intensify until the end of October, when
11:42the EU will implement anti-dumping measures on electric vehicles from China.
