00:00Once upon a time, the king of a great land passed away and left his queen and their daughter behind.

00:09And there was a good fairy too, who was fond of the princess and helped her mother to watch over her.

00:17When she grew up, she was betrothed to a prince who lived a great way off.

00:23And as the time grew near for her to be married,

00:26she got ready to set off on her journey to his country.

00:30The mother packed all the jewels and royal garments for her daughter.

00:35My dear child, now take these jewels and precious stones with you and be happy with your prince.

01:57She bent down over the water in the stream and drank.

02:16After more hours of traveling, she was thirsty once more,

02:20and when they came to a stream of water, she said to her maid,

02:36She bent down over the water in the stream and drank.

05:22Then they went out of the city, and drove the geese on,

05:26and when she came to the meadow, she sat down upon a bank there,

05:31and let down her waving locks of hair, which were all of pure silver.

05:36And when Kurdkin saw it glitter in the sun, he ran up,

05:40and would have pulled some of her locks out, but she cried.

05:44Blow, breezes, blow, let Kurdkin's hat go.

05:52O'er hills, dales, and rocks, away be it whirled,

05:56till the silvery locks all are combed and curled.

06:00Then there came a wind so strong, that it blew off Kurdkin's hat,

06:05and away it flew over the hills, and he was forced to turn and run after it.

06:11By the time he came back, she had done combing and curling her hair,

06:16and had put it up again safely.

06:19Then he was very angry and sulky, and would not speak to her at all.

06:24They watched the geese until it grew dark in the evening,

06:28and then drove them homewards.

06:33The same thing repeated for two days, and one evening,

06:38Kurdkin went to the old king complaining.

06:41I cannot have that strange girl to help me to keep the geese any longer.

06:46Instead of doing any good, she does nothing but tease me all day long.

07:01Then the king made him tell him what had happened,

07:05and Kurdkin went on telling the king what had happened.

07:09Hmm, you carry on with your work. I'll look into the matter.

07:15When morning came, the king placed himself behind the dark gate,

07:20and heard how the princess spoke to Falada, and how Falada answered.

07:26Then he went into the field, and hid himself in a bush by the meadow side,

07:32and he soon saw with his own eyes how she let down her hair that glittered in the sun.

07:39And then he heard her say,

07:42Blow breezes blow, let Kurdkin's hat go.

07:50Over hills, dales, and rocks, away be it whirled,

07:58And soon came a gale of wind, and carried away Kurdkin's hat,

08:10All this time the old king saw, so he went home without being seen.

08:20the king called her aside, and asked her why she did this so,

08:25but she burst into tears.

08:35But the old king begged so hard,

08:37that she had no peace till she had told him all the tale,

08:41from beginning to end, word for word.

08:44And it was very lucky for her that she did so.

08:49No harm shall come upon you dear princess.

08:52I will right the wrong done to you.

08:54Now I want you to get dressed as the princess would.

08:59When she did, he gazed on her with wonder.

09:02She was so beautiful.

09:04Then he called his son, and told him that he had only a false bride,

09:10for that she was merely a waiting maid, while the true bride stood by.

09:24And the young prince rejoiced when he saw her beauty,

09:27and heard how meek and patient she had been.

09:30And without saying anything to the false bride,

09:34the king ordered a great feast to be got ready for all his court.

09:40Tonight we celebrate the truth, and punish the lie.

09:46The bridegroom sat at the top,

09:48with the false princess on one side, and the true one on the other.

09:53But nobody knew her again,

09:55for her beauty was quite dazzling to their eyes.

09:59And she did not seem at all like the little goose girl,

10:03now that she had her brilliant dress on.

10:09When they had eaten and drunk, and were very merry,

10:13the old king stood up asking for attention.

10:33what she thought ought to be done to anyone who would behave thus.

11:06And they reigned over the kingdom in peace and happiness all their lives.

11:11And the good fairy came to see them,

11:13and restored the faithful Falada to life again.
