00:00hey guys one of our patrons asked recently about the movie called lost in
00:06translation and it stars Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson and he asked if if
00:14I'd seen it if I liked it and I said I remember seeing it I remember liking it
00:19but it was a long time ago it's pretty old movie it might be 20 years old so I
00:23couldn't really remember I remember bits of it I remember lip of my stocking and
00:29some stuff like that those you have seen it will remember that scene too
00:34probably so there's some bits that I remember I couldn't really remember much
00:38of it so like 20 years ago so I thought yeah I'll watch that again so this week
00:45one one rainy day I couldn't get out to do the things I needed to do outside so
00:50I watched it again and it was it was really good as I remember I enjoyed it
00:55like I remembered enjoying it last time I started taking notes at first the
01:01things that I was noticing that were really accurate it's sort of like what
01:05they did was they shot they shot it in Tokyo it seems and just captured Tokyo
01:15so it wasn't the idealized Tokyo that you usually see with all those classic
01:20cliche scenes it was just day-to-day Tokyo so what it was like he just got in a
01:26taxi and went somewhere in a taxi and just all the day-to-day stuff you know
01:29and then he met that he met the Japanese people he was he came to Japan to do a
01:37whiskey commercial so the deal is that Bill Murray was a famous actor and now
01:41he's just doing whiskey commercials right it's Santorini time and and so he
01:48arrives and he's met by these executives from Santorini and and some
01:53other people else they're really good they're like it was like they weren't
01:56acting just like an experience that you could have here normally in Japan meeting
02:01business people you know they behave just like business people you do handing
02:06over the cards and lots of bowing and just they really captured it really well
02:10whoever whoever was wrote it and directed it did a really good job
02:14actually the director was the daughter of a famous director who also co-produced it so anyway if you're interested in all that you can look it up on one of those sites that has all that or when you watch the watch the movie if you decide to watch the movie you'll see all those details but the director really did a good job of just staying out of it it's like there wasn't that usual Hollywood influence you know and it was just like it was just people in Tokyo doing stuff
02:44you know and so it captured lots of that good stuff I made lots of notes at first
02:48about all the stuff that was really accurate you know just their behavior the
02:52scenery not not particularly not shot to make it look particularly special or
02:59anything just shot like like it'd be the same if I went to Tokyo and walked around with my camera and then posted the video on YouTube
03:07it's just like that it's just like that it's really good those of you who have been to Tokyo
03:13will recognize this just like being in Tokyo you know a normal experience in
03:18Tokyo those who haven't been yet that's what it's like right so that was that
03:23was the first the first thing was the fairly superficial stuff like that you
03:31know I'll have a low shower he gets in the shower and the shower head was
03:36really low and he tried to bring it up to its maximum height and it still wasn't
03:40high enough it was still about chest height yeah tall people have experienced
03:46that in Japan before while watching TV and the rubbish that was on TV just the
03:51weird rubbish and he just sat there scrolling through the channels with this
03:55sort of bewildered look on his face he's got the right Bill Murray's got the
04:00right disposition for reacting to weird Japanese stuff you know he just sort of
04:07looked at it at one stage actually had him on a weird Japanese TV show and he
04:12was trying to sort of get into it but you can see he just wasn't getting into it it was just too weird
04:16right I guess I relate to him his reactions to it because he was reacting
04:21to it like an old man right and you know old men like me react to weird stuff in
04:26Japan a bit like that sometimes like one raised eyebrow and like you're kidding
04:29me aren't you are you for real with those clothes you know are you serious
04:34so there was all that there was all that you know and it was all good the big
04:40city Japan experience you know that was all there you know it was all good but
04:45what really struck me this time was deeper than that I don't want to ruin it
04:52for anybody who hasn't seen it yet I don't want to ruin the plot but the two
04:57characters you know him and Scarlett Johansson are sort of isolated and
05:02they're sort of isolated and they're sort of you can see that they're feeling
05:06isolated and they're feeling sort of lonely and anybody who spent time in
05:13Japan on your own would have experienced that you know I spent a lot of time when
05:19I first came here a lot of time here on my own which is actually really good for
05:22learning stuff because you tend to be more observant when you're on your own
05:27than you would be if you're with someone else however if you if you're traveling
05:32in Japan or living in Japan with someone else you don't get this same isolated
05:37feeling so much you know whereas when you're on your own you quite often do
05:41and it's it's sort of interesting because you could be in Tokyo which is
05:46like a 20 million people in the metropolitan area right 20 million
05:49people around you but feel really isolated and they sort of captured that
05:53really well really captured that really well and here they were you know in in
05:59really busy places surrounded by lots and lots of people but this underlying
06:04feeling of isolation and but you know partly from the language as well you
06:09know he was trying to talk to people there's going on in Japanese you know
06:12they had a funny scene when he was shooting his commercial and some of you
06:16know I've actually done I've been an extra in some TV shows here and so I've
06:21been on movie sets here you know and it was really classic they captured it
06:25really well and then you know the director was giving these really long
06:29instructions on what to do and the translator was just giving really short
06:33translations and he's saying is that really all he said you know and and the
06:38language thing the language thing and there were some people in it some
06:42Japanese people in it who spoke English well but the majority didn't so he spent
06:46a lot of time speaking to people in English and they're answering him in
06:50Japanese and I just had no idea and and and that that that's very isolating when
06:55you're living in a place where you can't speak the language and you know
06:59they're speaking to you in language you don't understand some of you would
07:02have experienced this it's really isolating you know you can be in a room
07:06of a hundred people I remember sitting at a table once when I first came here
07:10and couldn't speak Japanese or understand Japanese at all and sitting
07:13at a table with like 20 people and they're all drinking and eating and
07:17talking and laughing and I didn't know what was going on and and there's
07:21nothing more isolating than sitting at a table and someone says something and
07:24everyone laughs but you don't know you don't understand what was said so you
07:29don't laughing so the whole tables cracking up and you're just sitting
07:34there looking at him like what happened you know and really isolating really
07:38really is you know and that movie really captured it and I want again I'm trying
07:42not to ruin the plot but that actually was part of the plot that was actually
07:48part of the story was the fact that these two characters were sort of
07:51isolated and you know surrounded by people but here like here they are and
07:56that played out right to the very end the very end of the movie too you got
07:59that same feeling that here they are surrounded by people but it's just him
08:02and it's just her and all the other people are just so like background or
08:07scenery you know and that's the feeling you know I remember going to Tokyo when
08:11I first came here and couldn't speak Japanese and and I spent a few days in
08:17Tokyo and and that was the feeling there was like you know all this walls
08:21of people around you but it doesn't mean anything if you don't know what's being
08:25said you know and the announcements and PA and if you can't read anything and
08:30you can't you don't understand what you're hearing it's all just noise you
08:36know it's just noise and and color and it doesn't mean anything if you don't
08:41know what's going on you know so it was really good it was really really good so
08:45obviously if you're watching this video you're interested in Japan and I would
08:48suggest check it out Boston translation it's called it was like 2003 or
08:55something it's like 20 years old Bill Murray so yeah check it out
09:02probably get a giggle out of it because you'll recognize lots of stuff just
09:04little things like that the sounds the lifts make the ding that the best that
09:08the lifts make there's a lot of little things like that you know and just
09:13little things like that little details that were like yeah yeah there it is
09:16there it is you know things that people said and I don't know if it has I guess
09:20it has subtitles I watched it online and the version I watched didn't have
09:25subtitles which was sort of interesting because the Japanese people just just
09:29speaking in normal Japanese and again it's written very realistically so
09:34they're um they're speaking away in Japanese you know really really well so
09:39really naturally that's what I meant not really well but really naturally you
09:44know it's real natural Japanese so it's a it's good it's a good movie it's a
09:48really good movie they did a good job of it so yeah I'd recommend it Boston
09:52translation check it out another unskilled movie review more videos
09:59coming soon
