00:00Let's go to David in Sunnyvale first. Hi, David. And again, the emotion you felt as Juice goes into the end zone
00:07and you know the Niners are gonna come out of their three and three.
00:10How would you describe it? 888-957-9570. Hi, David. What's up?
00:16Hey, man, what's going on? Thank you for taking my call. I just want to say, like, I definitely felt relieved.
00:22Like, the rest of you guys, I felt relieved. I was watching the game, literally delivering packages yesterday,
00:28and I was behind because I was just so, like, stressed out about this football game, man.
00:33But I thought it was great. Obviously, there's some things, I will say, like, maybe a hot take,
00:39but, like, I think I used it for him to save Kyle Shanahan's, like, career, like, for this season.
00:44Because the way, like, him just taking the downfield and then taking the slide, which people will say,
00:49oh, he didn't take the slide or he got caught up. No, he took the slide. Come on. Like, the tape shows.
00:54But, really good football game, and I just, I need him to beat the Chiefs, man.
00:58I really do, because if not, you know, then again, it puts Kyle right back in the hot seat.
01:03But thank you guys so much for taking my call. I really appreciate it.
01:06David, thank you so much. It's a great call. For a number of different reasons.
01:09Except for that Kyle Shanahan will not be on the hot seat at any point this year for any reason, period.
01:13Even if they lose to Kansas City. And I do think that Isaac Garrendo slid,
01:18but I don't necessarily think that he needed the slide. Actually, he should not have slid.
01:22But it's hard to know that. I'll give him, especially as a rookie, that's one of those weird, like, I didn't even know.
01:29As he's running down the sideline, I'm like, what's the analytics play here? Is it to lay down or is it to score?
01:34As it turns out, it was to score.
01:35Right, because they had two timeouts left, or they had all three, because they used one right there.
01:40So, you're up five, so if he slides, and they use a timeout, which they did,
01:46and then you run a first down play and you get stopped, which is what happened,
01:50and then second down play, you get stopped, third down play, you get stopped, no timeout.
01:57So, you lose 40 seconds off the clock, which would have got you down to about 35 seconds left to go in the game.
02:03Roughly, kick the field goal, you're up eight. Now you have to kick off.
02:06And now Geno Smith has no timeouts, and he needs a touchdown, but he's got the ball.
02:11Yep, and you're only up by one score.
02:13So, the alternative is, Garrendo goes all the way to the house, and it turns out to be an 81-yard touchdown run,
02:19and one of the greatest runs in current Niner history, and you go up by 12 points, as you eventually did.
02:26Seattle has all three timeouts and about a minute 20-ish to go, but you're up by two scores.
02:32So, like, the analytics, I think, are pretty clear that it's okay to score there.
02:37Score. Yeah, but I get why you're pausing if you're him,
02:40and he even said that he was hearing whispers from the sideline, get down, get down.
02:45That's good hearing.
02:45Well, I mean... If he's hearing that as he's...
02:48If guys are yelling at you, get down, get down, you do hear it.
02:51I bet Drake Greenlaw heard it against the Packers in the playoffs last year, like, dude, fall down.
02:56And he's like, mind your business. Exactly, I'm working here.
03:01But we're trained, when you get the ball in that situation, and there's three timeouts, and you're up by five, but you've got the ball.
03:10I think we're trained to think, if we get a first down, we win.
03:15If we get a first down, we win.
03:17The problem is, is he got it right away, on first down.
03:20And it wasn't just a first down, it was a... There's nobody in front of me first down.
03:2476 yards.
03:25So, I... But I get why the thought was, if I lay down, did we win?
03:30And the answer's no.
03:32So, I'm thankful that at least, if you're gonna slide, I still don't know if he did partially tackle at least.
03:37I think he slid.
03:38Well, I think it was a little bit of both.
03:40He got clipped, but he probably could have stumbled into the end zone.
03:43But once he got clipped, he's like, let's just slide into second base, but whatever.
03:48Luckily, at least he did that all the way down inside the five.
03:52If he had crossed, for instance, if he had just gone 12 yards, and been like, we win, slide, that could have been a problem.
03:59That could have literally been a game-loser.
04:00Yeah, yeah.
04:01So, you know, anyway.
04:02You needed two first downs in that spot, or a 76-yard run.
04:06Well, you only need one first down if it comes on third down, or even second down.
04:11Yeah, probably third down, yeah, you're right.
04:13Once their timeouts are gone, now you're in good shape.
04:17But it happened right away, which leaves it to interpretation, I guess.
04:21No doubt.
04:22And it was great that Juszczyk got the touchdown on the fullback dive, and I hope it was a fullback dive.
04:27And I'm not gonna say that on Wednesday until I'm 100% sure that it was a fullback dive.
04:30I can't wait for you to try. It's gonna be amazing.
04:32No, because I, again, for those of you in the YouTube audience, two pages of notes.
04:35Look at those things.
04:36This morning, I charted every play, and I did the whole thing.
04:39And I did the first quarter as I'm feeding breakfast to my two-year-old.
04:43And then I dropped her off at preschool, and I went through the rest of the game.
04:46And I feel good about where I am with the game until Wednesday when Greg Cosell comes on.
04:51But I guess for me, it's not how I felt when Juszczyk scored.
04:56It's more how I felt when Kittle scored.
04:59When Kittle scored to put them up 29-17, that's when I felt it wasn't really relief.
05:05It was more validation, like, okay, they're better than Seattle.
05:09I picked the Niners for all of you. Fade the Dibber.
05:12All you Fade the Dibber people, y'all can eat that, because I'm back.
05:16Exercise that demon.
05:18As I texted the thread, I'm back. I'm him.
05:22I got no response from any of you, which I thought was a little telling.
05:26Yes, you did. It just wasn't the response you wanted.
05:29You got a response. You got a response.
05:31From the three of you?
05:32Yes, everybody. Well, Grady might not.
05:34After I said, I'm back, I'm him.
05:36Let's see. Where, I gotta go.
05:37None of you Fade me.
05:38I was working. I don't pay attention.
05:40Yeah, you were working. I'll give you a pass.
05:42Shoot, where is it?
05:43I gave you a cuckoo.
05:44Yeah, that's right.
05:46Thank you. And I gave you a three for your cuckoo.
05:50Yeah, you said, Fade, I'm back, I'm him. And I wrote, good pick, Dibbs.
05:55And then Lucas said, told you I love the pick.
05:58And then I wrote, I put 50 on it. Easy money.
06:01And then you started weighing back in again.
06:03Cash me out one time.
06:05And then Lucas gave a cuckoo.
06:07Yeah, and as a reward to the audience, I do have a Sunday night lock.
06:11As we, we pick the primetime games and normally I stay away from Sunday night
06:15because there's a Sunday Niner game, but I've got a Sunday night lock for you.
06:19Isn't this a weird one?
06:20Who's playing Sunday night? Isn't it a weird one?
06:22I'd have to look because I...
06:23Is it like, is it, is it two good teams or is it like weird teams?
06:28I feel like I remember looking at the Sunday night game and I'm going,
06:30that's the Sunday night game. Or maybe I'm thinking of a future week.
06:34The schedule this week, Sunday night football.
06:37Oh, yeah. The New York Giants are hosting Sunday night football.
06:40What are we doing?
06:41Why do they wait to halfway through the year to do the flex scheduling?
06:45Get them out of here. What are we doing?
06:47We're waiting all...
06:48They're coming off of, off of victory over Seattle.
06:50I've been waiting all day for Daniel Jones. Not really.
06:54Been waiting all day for a Danny Dimes.
06:58Yeah, you are.
06:59I mean, Kerry's embarrassed to sing about this game.
07:03Giants and Bengals?
07:04I'll give you a Sunday night lock a little bit later in the show.
07:06The pig is in.
07:07Losing records and Daniel Jones is...
07:10I mean, I don't know. We could have done something better than that.
07:13For God's sakes, the Lions are playing the Cowboys Sunday afternoon.
07:17Yeah.
07:17Put that game on Sunday night football, please.
07:19Flex that, baby.
07:20More clarification, Dibs.
07:21So you talked about how you had a lock for Sunday night football,
07:24but you didn't know the game?
07:27Of course.
07:28Oh, okay.
07:29That's a great question.
07:31It's a great question.
07:32It's really not because I'm in a confidence pool
07:35and I've already made all 14 picks for the week.
07:37So I'll have to look at my spreadsheet to let you know
07:40what the cogent and coherent Dibs thought on Wednesday when the picks were in.
07:45I think we got the Bengals minus four.
07:47Yeah.
07:48And we got a home dog on Sunday.
07:50A lot of home dogs.
07:51Like, tomorrow's full of home dogs.
07:53You know, the prime time.
07:55You're going to be two and two of them because Monday night is a home dog also.
07:59Yeah.
07:59The newly coached former Niner Jeff Olbrich, New York Jets.
08:04And that pick is already in.
08:05And I don't want to give that one away, but that one to me, that's an easy one.
08:09Are hosting the Buffalo Bills and while we bring up the Buffalo Bills,
08:12can I make an adjustment to a previous prediction?
08:16An adjustment.
08:17Feels like you're about to back that thing up.
08:19I am.
08:19Okay.
08:20Hit me with the beeps.
08:21Beep, beep, beep, beep, beep.
08:24Devontae Adams is going to be a bill.
08:27It's going to be a bill.
08:29I don't know how long it's going to take.
08:30Well, you...
08:32You already missed your over-under.
08:34You said, I'll tell you by next Wednesday, it's going to happen.
08:37I didn't say it like that at all.
08:38And I was wrong.
08:39It's better when I mock you with my mocky voice because you were wrong.
08:43Mock Willard.
08:44And I...
08:45It's a four.
08:46I said, I bet the over.
08:48And you go, oh, this is going to happen quick.
08:50I'm so smart.
08:51I'm running the show.
08:53That's me doing Randy.
08:55No, that was you doing Willard.
08:56Whatever.
08:57You two are two peas in a pod.
08:59You're damn right.
08:59That's why our mamas gave us the same name.
09:02You both spell your names wrong, but...
09:04That's wrong.
09:04How would you spell it?
09:06M-A-R-Q-U-E.
09:07Okay.
09:08Duh.
09:08Marque?
09:09Marque.
09:10Mock.
09:12Newmark.
09:13Stupid.
09:13Whatever.
09:14Go to the phones.
09:14You won't.
09:15Let's go to Jason in Chicago.
09:16I will.
09:17Hi, Jason.
09:18What are you doing?
09:20I am cooking dinner.
09:22Nice.
09:23What are you making?
09:25Pancake tacos.
09:26Oh, my God, Jason.
09:28Will you stay on for the rest of the show?
09:29That sounds pretty, like, oddly delicious.
09:32What's in them?
09:34So you take a pancake.
09:35You take everything else for breakfast.
09:36So you have pancakes, scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage.
09:40And then instead of, like, a syrup or something, or a salsa,
09:44you use syrup.
09:45And then you just, like, squeeze that pancake?
09:49You just squeeze that thing in your hand and just get after it?
09:52Yeah, your pancake is your tortilla.
09:56And then what the hell is your side dish?
09:58There is no side dish.
10:00It's all in the pancake.
10:01It's all in the pancake.
10:02Jason, you're a bachelor, aren't you?
10:04Huh?
10:06Exactly.
10:07Anyway, go ahead, Jason.
10:09I'm divorced.
10:10Even better.
10:11Perfect.
10:12Take it from two others that can say the same thing.
10:15It's all good.
10:15Jason, fire away.
10:18Whatever you want.
10:19All right.
10:20The one word from yesterday is finally.
10:23Finally, there was red zone efficiency.
10:26Finally, there was an interception by a defensive back.
10:29Finally, we had constant pressure from Bosa, who was actually going after the
10:34football while chasing after Geno Smith.
10:36Finally, there was plays on defense to close out the game.
10:41Just finally, it's over and done with.
10:44Now, everybody can relax a bit until we face the Chiefs in a week.
10:48That's all.
10:49Finally, it's over.
10:50Jason, thank you very much.
10:52Don't you think also that this game, and I don't want to.
10:56Please, don't with the loser mentality thing, but this win last night takes a
11:03little bit of the heat off of playing Patrick Mahomes in nine days.
11:09That would have been terrifying if you were two and four.
11:13Yeah.
11:14I would feel much more like a must win.
11:16Yeah.
11:17I believe that the 49ers can beat the Chiefs.
11:19I think that's going to be a really good game.
11:21We'll see where the health stands for both teams.
11:23They've both been hitting the mouth pretty good with the injury bug so far.
11:27The Chiefs don't have wide receivers or running backs on their team.
11:31I guess Kareem Hunt counts.
11:33I don't even know who's running the ball for the 49ers.
11:37All of that.
11:38We've got plenty of time.
11:39We've got all next week to play with that.
11:42Last night takes the edge off a little bit for the Chiefs game.
11:45No doubt.
11:46You know what I mean?
11:47I think at minimum, to me, you've got to get to the bye at four and four.
11:52Now you can do that, in theory, without having to beat the Chiefs.
11:58Yes.
11:59You can think about maybe being five and three because if you can beat the
12:02Chiefs, which is something you haven't really done in a long time, and then
12:06Dallas is kind of a weird team up and down.
12:09You've actually had your way with Dallas of late, so you feel like that's much
12:13more of a winnable game.
12:15What you said about who's carrying the ball becomes interesting because
12:18Jordan Mason, he was able to return from the shoulder injury.
12:22He had one carry, and then that was it.
12:24He was back on the sideline.
12:26It wasn't so bad that he couldn't come back out.
12:29I think it's a sprained AC joint, which I don't know if in ten days that can
12:34be healed enough to get better.
12:37I won't refer to Twitter docs because Twitter docs have had a little bit of a
12:41rough week, but I do think that ten days is going to help the idea of maybe him
12:46coming back.
12:47We've got some Shanahan on the injury situation.
12:50First of all, this is the broad one on the whole team.
12:52Injuries from the game, Malik Mustafa has a low ankle.
12:56He'll be day-to-day this week.
12:58Matt Wright had a shoulder.
13:01We're still waiting for his MRI to get back.
13:04He did dislocate it or it came out for a little bit, so we've got to make sure
13:09it went back in, but we've got to find out more on it when we get the MRI.
13:13Jordan Mason, he had a shoulder AC sprained.
13:16He'll be day-to-day this week also.
13:18Kyle, is there any concern about Wright's availability for your next game?
13:23Yes.
13:24We're not sure.
13:25We know he'll have a chance, but we don't know for sure until we get that MRI back.
13:29By the way, we can update.
13:30That MRI is now back, per Adam Schefter, and it is negative.
13:36So right now, the expectation is that Matthew Wright will be ready to kick against
13:41the Kansas City Chiefs in nine days.
13:44Specifically to Mason, though, who he said AC joint sprain and is day-to-day.
13:50He expanded on that a little bit later.
13:52We take it as good news.
13:54It doesn't guarantee this week or anything.
13:57But it was positive that it wasn't worse than that.
13:59So he'll be day-to-day this week, and hopefully he'll be good for the game,
14:03but no guarantees.
14:04Okay.
14:05So right now, questionable, but doesn't sound like anything that's going to
14:08hold him out for a long time.
14:10Right, and it turns out to be the ligament that is connecting the shoulder
14:15blade to the collarbone.
14:16So it's not a broken collarbone, and it's not a broken shoulder blade.
14:20So it's an AC sprain, which, as we know, is a slight tearing of the ligaments.
14:25And he was able to come back and play one play, and he got eight yards in the
14:29first carry.
14:30And I think by design, they ran him toward the sideline just to see how he
14:33was doing.
14:34And you saw him over there trying to windmill the thing out and trying to
14:38warm it up.
14:39And after the third quarter, he stopped doing that, realizing that he wasn't
14:42going to be able to come back.
14:44So I do think with ten days of rest, he is a candidate to come out and play
14:49in the next game.
14:51The fact that Matthew Wright's shoulder went out but also came back in, that
14:55tells me that whatever happened, and usually it's a little bit of a torn
14:59labrum, it wasn't so bad that the shoulder needs to be surgically repaired.
15:04Matthew Wright.
15:05Yeah, Matthew Wright.
15:06I don't think he did come back in.
15:08That was at the very end of the game that that happened.
15:10Right, but the shoulder went back in is my point.
15:12Got it, got it, got it.
15:13So as a guy who suffered that injury, when the shoulder goes out, a lot of
15:17times you can put it back in, which means that the tear that happened is so
15:21small that the shoulder is going to still be mostly stable and he's a kicker.
15:27So you would think that he doesn't need his shoulder, but what are we doing
15:32with our kickers here?
15:33Well, Mark, can we take a minute on this?
15:35More than a minute.
15:36What's going on, guys?
15:37Okay, like this one was not as egregious because I do think that there were not
15:42players necessarily behind Matthew Wright, but there were two players right
15:46alongside him.
15:47If you go look at the video, go look at the video, and that Seattle returner has
15:54absolutely zero chance of not being pushed out of bounds by the 49ers in that
16:00situation because there are three of them there, and one of them is Matthew Wright.
16:04And Matthew decides that in this moment, I know what I'm going to do.
16:08I'm going to be the most aggressive of the three.
16:11I'm going to take a hard angle right at the thigh of a professional football
16:15returner, and I'm going to dive into that player who is a yard removed from the
16:20sideline while two professional tacklers are standing right next to me.
16:25Guys, stop it.
16:28Stop it.
16:30You are, I can honestly say, not built for this.
16:34Nice.
16:36You have to stop, and I don't want the machismo answer.
16:40Oh, you're a football player.
16:42You've got to go out there and do it.
16:44That's football.
16:45That's how you gather your teammates.
16:46Matthew Wright is smaller than my son.
16:50Look at that man.
16:52Do not sacrifice your body unless you are literally the last line of defense in a
17:01key situation.
17:03Stop it.
17:05You've lost a kicker in back-to-back weeks.
17:07This is just stupid.
17:09Well, and I understand his mindset, and I don't know, I'm not going to go inside
17:13the mind of a kicker, but earlier in the half, he kicked off and the other team
17:18returned it 97 yards for a touchdown.
17:20That's true.
17:21And on that play, he got juked so hard, I'm surprised he didn't tear his ACL.
17:26And there was two guys juked, and you had another guy miss a tackle, and they
17:31took one to the house on you.
17:33So in this spot where 36-24, the only thing that you can afford to do in that
17:38spot is give up a kick return for a touchdown again?
17:41Yes.
17:42You've got to make Seattle earn it if they're going to score again.
17:44I get it.
17:45I get it.
17:46I just feel like a kicker should have real situational awareness of what's going
17:49on around him.
17:50And who they are.
17:51And if you've got defenders right next to you, go behind them.
17:55That was a very aggressive angle that he took.
17:58Yeah.
17:59And then he threw his body at the returner.
18:01And the second it happened, I'm like, well, that's the end of him.
18:04He's a wispy, wet newspaper out there compared to all the other players.
18:08That seems mean when you say it like that.
18:10He is.
18:11He's a wee little man.
18:13Anyway.
