Tesla unveils robotaxis

Elon Musk unveiled Tesla’s new robotaxi, with no steering wheel, pedals, or human control. With gull-wing doors and a sleek design, this AI-powered “Cybercab” is due to arrive in 2026.

Musk claimed it could cost as little as 20 cents per mile – but with no hardware beyond cameras, the tech faces a storm of regulatory and technical hurdles.

Do you think this is the dawn of driverless dominance?

00:00I think the cost of autonomous transport will be so low that you can think of it like individualized mass transit.
00:09The average cost of a bus per mile for a city, not the ticket price because that is subsidized,
00:17but the average price is about a dollar a mile.
00:20Whereas the cost of cyber cab, we think probably over time, the operating cost is probably going to be around 20 cents a mile.
00:30And price, including taxes and everything else, probably ends up being 30 or 40 cents a mile.
00:37So, yes, and you will be able to buy one.
00:45Yes, exactly.
00:48And we expect the cost to be below $30,000.
00:56So we'll move from supervised full self-driving to unsupervised full self-driving,
01:02where you could fall asleep and wake up at your destination.
01:06How many hours a week are cars used?
01:11Your average passenger car is only used about 10 hours a week out of 168 hours.
01:17So the vast majority of the time, cars are just doing nothing.
01:20But if they're autonomous, they could be used, I don't know, five times more, maybe 10 times more.
01:28It'll save lives, like a lot of lives, and prevent injuries.
01:33I think we'll see autonomous cars become 10 times safer than a human.
