The first episode of Mahabharat on StarPlus begins with a majestic introduction to Hastinapura and the lineage of the Kuru dynasty. The episode opens with a panoramic view of the kingdom, underscored by a grand and regal atmosphere, setting the tone for the epic narrative to follow.

Shantanu and Ganga's Fateful Meeting:
The story starts with King Shantanu, a noble and kind ruler of Hastinapura, wandering along the banks of the river Ganga. He encounters a mysterious and ethereal woman—Ganga, the goddess of the river, in human form. Shantanu is instantly captivated by her beauty and grace, unaware of her divine origin. The chemistry between them is almost immediate, but there’s an underlying tension, as Ganga's serenity seems to hide a deeper, more enigmatic secret.

A Divine Agreement:
Ganga agrees to marry Shantanu, but with one strange and ominous condition: Shantanu must never question her actions, no matter how strange or painful they may seem. Blinded by love, Shantanu agrees to this condition, and the two are soon married. This condition introduces an element of suspense, as viewers are left wondering what Ganga is hiding and how Shantanu will deal with it.

The Birth of Their Children and the Growing Tragedy:
In a dramatic twist, after each child is born, Ganga takes the newborn to the river and drowns them without explanation. The psychological tension in these scenes is palpable, as Shantanu's grief grows with each child lost. Bound by his promise, he watches in silent agony, torn between his love for Ganga and his increasing despair over the deaths of his children.

Shantanu's Breaking Point:
By the time Ganga prepares to drown their eighth child, Shantanu can no longer contain his anguish. He finally confronts her, breaking his vow. Ganga then reveals her true identity and explains the curse of the Vasus, celestial beings who were condemned to be born as mortals. Ganga’s act of drowning the children was her way of liberating them from this mortal existence. However, because Shantanu broke his promise, their eighth child, Devavrata, must now live and fulfill his destiny as a mortal.

Devavrata’s Destiny:
The episode ends on a poignant note as Ganga departs, leaving Shantanu heartbroken yet hopeful, as Devavrata is destined to be a great warrior. This marks the birth of the future Bhishma, whose role in the Mahabharat will be monumental. The emotional intensity and psychological layers laid out in this episode set the stage for the epic tale of family, power, and destiny.

This first episode establishes the recurring themes of love, sacrifice, and the burden of destiny, which will play out in ever more dramatic ways throughout the series.
