00:00Hello.
00:01Welcome to your weather for the week ahead from the Met Office.
00:03Bit of a roller coaster this week.
00:05We're going to see big changes.
00:06We start blustery, a windy start,
00:08particularly in northern Scotland,
00:10where there's a warning in force.
00:12And everywhere will experience a cold wind on Tuesday.
00:15Then things calm down.
00:17High pressure moves in.
00:18The winds turn a lot lighter, which
00:20means we'll see a return of frost and some fog.
00:23But then at the end of the week, we
00:25could see things flipping back and the wind
00:27starting to pick up, potentially getting
00:29very windy during the second half of the weekend.
00:32Let's take a look day by day and take a look
00:34at the big picture first of all.
00:36It's this area of high pressure which
00:38will dominate through the middle of the week.
00:40But it's not here yet.
00:41It's this low pressure to the north of Scotland.
00:44Look at those isobars really nipping together
00:46across northern Scotland.
00:47Very strong winds on Monday night.
00:50There is that warning in force, gusts of 60, 70,
00:53possibly, around exposed coasts 80 miles an hour.
00:56That low pressure will also be throwing a lot of showers
00:58across the country on Tuesday morning.
01:00Some sleet and snow over the hills in northern Scotland,
01:03even to lower levels for a time.
01:05The showers drift southwards.
01:07And the winds will bring a chilly feel,
01:09even though we do see things turning drier by the afternoon.
01:13And we should see some sunny spells.
01:15Temperature-wise, well, actually,
01:16the numbers on the thermometer will read a roundabout
01:19or maybe even a touch above average, 8, 9, 10 Celsius.
01:22But add on that wind, and particularly
01:25down the east coast, it is going to feel cold temperatures
01:28here, feeling more like 2 or 3 Celsius at best.
01:32So a cold wind blowing on Tuesday,
01:34but things calming down on Tuesday night.
01:37As the high pressure moves in, the isobars space out.
01:40The winds fall light.
01:42And that will allow things to turn quite cold
01:44for Wednesday morning.
01:45A frost is likely in some spots.
01:47And we could see some fog around as well.
01:50Overall, though, it's a dry day.
01:52We'll see some bright or sunny spells coming through.
01:55If we do get some thick fog, though,
01:57it could take a while to clear.
01:59Maybe some drizzly rain at times across the far north
02:01of Scotland.
02:02Temperature-wise, well, again, 7, 8, 9 Celsius.
02:04But the winds won't be as strong.
02:07However, just bear in mind, if we
02:08do see some stubborn fog patches,
02:10temperatures won't be this high.
02:12They'll struggle to get much above freezing.
02:15Again, fog likely on Wednesday night,
02:17as the winds are light across England and Wales.
02:18Not many isobars here.
02:20That high is just starting to wobble away.
02:23A bit more in the way of breeze across northern Scotland
02:25and Northern Ireland means here it won't be too foggy.
02:28And again, bar a bit of drizzle across the far northwest,
02:31it's a largely dry day on Thursday.
02:33A fair bit of cloud around, but we
02:35should see some sunny spells coming through
02:36at times, providing that fog shifts.
02:39And temperatures, again, single figures for the most part,
02:43and lower than these numbers if that fog doesn't clear away.
02:47Could, again, be some fog around on Friday morning
02:49as the high continues to dominate
02:51across England and Wales.
02:53But by this stage, just notice those isobars
02:55just huddling together a little bit more.
02:57The breeze started to pick up, and there
02:58are a couple of weather fronts on the chart.
03:00One could bring some patchy rain.
03:02Again, across the western coast, it
03:03might just be a bit damp and a bit drizzly.
03:05But for most areas, it's a dry day, predominantly cloudy.
03:09The winds are coming up from the south,
03:11which means if we see some breaks in the cloud,
03:13temperatures could get up to double digits.
03:15But it's going to be a cold start across the east,
03:17so temperatures here will struggle a little bit,
03:19six or seven degrees Celsius.
03:21I mentioned those weather fronts starting to approach.
03:24And this one looks like getting on the scene during Friday
03:27night and into the weekend.
03:29Still a bit of uncertainty about that, of course.
03:31But the bigger picture reveals quite a dramatic change
03:34taking place out in the Atlantic as we go into the weekend.
03:38Looking high up in the atmosphere,
03:39this is the jet stream.
03:41And we could see a really powerful jet stream
03:43starting to develop at the end of the week
03:45across the Atlantic.
03:46And that will then drive areas of low pressure our way.
03:50Now, this is a few days off, of course.
03:52So it's difficult to say what exact details of the weather
03:54into the weekend.
03:55But it could be quite a big change
03:57as we see initially some rain arriving in the west
04:00and then the winds picking up and the possibility
04:02of some very windy conditions.
04:04So the message at the moment is stay tuned to the forecast
04:07day by day variations.
04:09Best way to stay up to date with those
04:10is to follow us on Twitter and Facebook.
