This week brings light winds and sunny spells to most places, with some spots also likely to get a few showers. By the end of the week the weather may well turn cloudier with a greater chance of rain by the weekend. Alex Deakin explains.

00:00Hello and welcome to your weather for the week ahead from the Met Office.
00:04Now, the week ahead will end in a bank holiday weekend, more on that in just a moment.
00:09But for the next few days, many places will be seeing some sunny spells,
00:13feeling pleasantly warm in the afternoon sunshine as well because we'll have largely light winds.
00:19Those light winds do mean that the mornings could be a little chilly
00:23and also where we see some showers, they'll be quite slow moving and they could again be on the heavy side.
00:29Many places will see, as I say, a fair bit of sunshine this week, thanks to a large area of high pressure.
00:36And notice not many isobars across the chart, that's why the winds are light,
00:40which is also why Tuesday morning could be a little chilly,
00:43but generally it's looking like a fine bright day for most of England and Wales
00:47and the early morning mist and fog will clear away, maybe a little grey in the morning on the coast of East Anglia.
00:53Certainly quite grey in northern Scotland, here it will be a rather drab day with further outbreaks of rain.
00:58A sprinkling of showers over central Scotland, one or two for Northern Ireland,
01:02but as I say, for most of England and Wales, it's fine with sunny spells and temperatures in the afternoon
01:07getting up into the high teens or the low 20s, so feeling pretty pleasant.
01:12Now on Tuesday evening, not a great deal will change, that high pressure is still nearby,
01:17so again, not many isobars on the charts, the winds will be light,
01:20so again Wednesday morning that could start a little fresh with maybe a little bit of mist and fog here and there
01:26and we'll still have thicker cloud over north-east Scotland bringing some rain
01:29and we could just see some of that rain pushing into south-east Scotland and north-east England at times.
01:35One or two showers are possible elsewhere, but for most again, Wednesday, set fair, dry and fine
01:40with temperatures in the mid to high teens and the sunny spells feeling pretty pleasant,
01:45still rather cool though in northern Scotland, only 9 or 10 there in Shetland.
01:50That weather front will maybe linger on Wednesday night, but it should be pulling away by Thursday
01:55and at the same time at the opposite end of the country, a weather front is trying to push in.
02:00That'll be a bit of a change then on Thursday for the south-west of England,
02:04outbreaks of rain edging into Cornwall, perhaps Pembrokeshire too.
02:07It does fizzle out as it moves its way into parts of Wales and threatens Northern Ireland,
02:12but generally it will be cloudier in the west with some showery outbreaks of rain,
02:17probably a drier, brighter day in the north-east and much of eastern England set fair, dry and fine with some sunny spells.
02:23And again, in the sunshine, pleasant enough with temperatures in the high teens,
02:27cooler where it's cloudier in the west.
02:31Now there's more and more uncertainty as we go through Thursday and into Friday.
02:35The weather pattern's really messy, low pressure systems to the north,
02:39high pressure systems to the south and the east.
02:42And again, not a lot of isobars in the charts, there's nothing really moving too quickly,
02:46slow moving bands of cloud with some showery rain dribbling in from the west.
02:52A lot of uncertainty about the timing of the rain as it comes in
02:55and there will be still some dry and bright spells in between.
02:59But overall, it does look as if by the time we get to the end of the working week,
03:04the weather looks more unsettled with more cloud around and more showers.
03:09And that's how we go into the weekend as well with the potential for more weather fronts,
03:13but not particularly vigorous ones drifting in from the Atlantic.
03:18So it's too early to give much detail on the long bank holiday weekend,
03:22but after quite a bit of sunshine through this week,
03:25it does look as if the weekend will bring more mixed weather.
03:29There'll be a lot of cloud around at times and most places will see some rain,
03:33but it's a three-day weekend so there's bound to be some sunshine around as well.
03:38At this stage, as I said, just too early for details.
03:41Make sure you stay tuned by following the Met Office on social media.
