09 January - National weather forecast presented by Clare Nasir.
Transcript
00:00Remaining cold for the rest of this week with a frost by night where you see starry skies,
00:06a few fleeting showers as well. The wind will be strong, particularly across more eastern
00:10and southern areas and that means a significant wind chill feeling colder than what temperatures
00:15would suggest. High pressure though in charge, which is great news in contrast to the last
00:20ten weeks where we've seen low pressure, wet and windy conditions, at least most places
00:25will be dry, albeit cold, and that high pressure sort of extends down and drifts towards Ireland.
00:31And then this feature here through Friday will approach Scotland, dragging in some colder
00:36air from the north through the weekend. Now through Tuesday evening, the frost will return
00:41across many areas where you see those starry skies. Always more clouds across north-east
00:46England, border regions, north-east Scotland, and that breeze will always be a feature of
00:51the weather, delivering some light and fleeting showers to these parts, and over the Pennines
00:56they could turn to snow, the air is that cold. Further south, a widespread frost, temperatures
01:02dipping down to around minus two, minus three Celsius, and across the western side of Scotland,
01:07across the Highlands certainly, we could see temperatures as low as around minus six to
01:10minus eight, even some patchy frost to start the day across Northern Ireland. So it's a
01:15tale of two halves for Scotland, you can see where that stubborn cloud is, clearer skies
01:19further west, but watch out for some freezing fog patches across more central parts of Scotland
01:23with a lighter breeze. Those showers filing in across border regions, north-east England,
01:27also extending towards the north-west of England, a few clipping the far west of Northern Ireland
01:33as well. To the south, it's dry, it's cold, and it's also rather breezy, and that wind
01:39is cold. So through the morning, you'll see some good spells of sunshine anywhere from
01:43the Midlands southwards, central and southern parts of Wales as well. More clouds across
01:48more northern areas of England and northern parts of Wales, eastern and central parts
01:53of Scotland, and the cloud will come and go across Northern Ireland, but there will be
01:56some breaks in the cloud. At the same time, this strong north-east wind will bring with
02:00it some showers, just pushing over towards the central and southern parts of Scotland.
02:06Northern England's seeing a few, but they'll tend to fizzle out through the afternoon,
02:09some dry skies as the cloud breaks up. Western Scotland doing very well with some sunshine,
02:14temperatures struggling here, and towards the east there, 6 or 7 will be your high,
02:19it's going to feel more like 1 or 2. So that's the picture on Wednesday, not a lot in the
02:23way of wet weather, certainly a lot of dry conditions, but those showers could just continue
02:28through Wednesday evening across border regions, central parts of Scotland, but they'll be
02:33fairly light, a few running down towards Ireland as well. That wind will pick up across eastern
02:38Scotland through the night, again more cloud moving in, and we'll see some patchy freezing
02:43fog towards the west, but still clearer skies, middle and south-west east, anglia south-east,
02:48and again temperatures will be sub-zero here, a fairly widespread frost. But where you see
02:52that stubborn cloud, temperatures holding up, certainly along the eastern side, but
02:57through Thursday, where we see that thicker cloud, you could see the odd spot or two of
03:02rain, never really amounting to very much. The scenario is mostly dry, and again clear
03:07towards the west once any freezing fog patches have lifted on Thursday morning. Through the
03:12afternoon then, here are your temperatures, 6, 7, 8 degrees celsius, feeling colder in
03:17that wind across central and eastern areas. So through Thursday evening and overnight
03:22it's a repeat performance, again a return of a frost, at least there'll be some sunshine,
03:26particularly in the north on Friday. I'll see you later.
