00:00Hello there, welcome to your Tuesday evening forecast from the Met Office. It's the 2nd
00:05of January, 2024, a happy new year to you. Now, Storm Henk was named by the Met Office
00:11earlier today and it will continue to bring impacts through Tuesday evening across England
00:15and Wales. Notably will be the winds, gusts up to around 50-60mph inland. Across headlands
00:21it could be higher than that. All of it is though pushing towards the east. We do have
00:25a broad yellow warning until 9pm this evening and again the risk of surface water flooding.
00:30We've seen so much rain over the last few months and this is not going to help the situation
00:34either so there could be again an increased chance of some flooding. Now, it will clear
00:39off the scene which is good news but low pressure also sits across the western side of Scotland
00:44bringing showery bursts of rain and a real squeeze on the isobars across the north east
00:49of Scotland where we'll see severe gales into Wednesday morning. And then Wednesday is yet
00:54again a showery day. Low pressure firmly in charge and bands of showers moving around
00:58the country although still windy towards the south west and the north east. Elsewhere
01:02you'll notice a difference in terms of the wind strength. It will ease. Even so, showers
01:07never too far away. So, Storm Henk is here. You can see heavy pulses of rain and the strongest
01:13winds across more eastern counties by then although a relentless wind continues across
01:17the south west. This whole system will push towards the north sea but hanging on to the
01:21rain after mid-evening across many eastern counties and that extends up towards the
01:26north east of Scotland where you'll see persistent rain and snow over the higher ground of Shetland.
01:32Now further west, a strong wind delivers showers to western Scotland and Northern Ireland and
01:36further showers moving in across Wales, central southern England, the west country through
01:40the night and they're likely to be heavy even with the chance of thunder. Some clearer skies
01:44to end the night across eastern counties and the winds will slowly ease them. Temperatures
01:48are holding up. It's not a particularly cold night for the time of year away from Shetland
01:52where temperatures will dip down close to freezing. So, first thing then on Wednesday
01:57morning where we'll see a rash of showers come in across western Scotland and again
02:02strong winds here. That's the centre of the low. Persistent rain across Orkney as well
02:06as Shetland and clipping the far north eastern tip of Scotland. Inland, a residue of cloud,
02:12one or two showers. Some showery bursts just moving in across Northern Ireland but some
02:15drier skies to start the day. Further showers for northern England, Wales, the midlands,
02:19central southern England as well as the west country. Further east, not a bad start to
02:23the day. Yes, some cloud, one or two showery bursts but also some breaks in the cloud allowing
02:29for some drier interludes. So, through Wednesday yet again it's a showery day. Some of these
02:35showers will be heavy. You'll see a little bit of sunshine coming through from time to
02:39time, southern Scotland, northern England but this bank of showers here will club together
02:43and move from the west towards the east across Scotland, again clipping Northern Ireland.
02:47Although in shelter places such as Belfast and Newry you may get away with some drier
02:52weather as we head through Wednesday with some brighter skies until later. And the showers
02:56will become a bit more scattered through the afternoon across England and Wales. So, some
02:59drier interludes and even a hint of sunshine but still a strong wind down towards the Scilly
03:03Isles as well as Cornwall and Devon and here frequent bursts. Temperatures then 10, 11,
03:0812 towards the south, still mild, further north 7 or 8 degrees Celsius. Now, on Wednesday
03:14evening this band of rain will continue its passage eastwards across Scotland, clipping
03:19the far north of England. A few showers run in across Northern Ireland and a similar situation
03:23exposed to the wind towards the south west. Showers never too far away further east as
03:28well but as you can see there are some gaps allowing for some drier skies from time to
03:32time and the winds remain relatively gentle across the central sway of the country. Still
03:37very windy though towards the north east of Scotland with severe gales and also outbreaks
03:43of rain. Temperatures then 4 or 5 in the north and dipping down slightly lower if you see
03:47any clear skies across mid Wales and the Midlands through into Thursday morning. Now, through
03:52Thursday we watch as this system here, it's quite localised, will bring some outbreaks
03:57of rain to southern counties of England and Wales. Now, to the north of that the clouds
04:02should break with some brighter skies and then it's showery across the northern half
04:06of the UK. Again, with some stronger winds towards the north west as well as the north
04:10east of Scotland and temperatures will struggle despite the brighter weather where you catch
04:14some 7 to 9 degrees Celsius as the rain clips the home counties as we head through the latter
04:20part of Thursday and then further showers move in from the south west through Thursday
04:24evening as well. So, that's the picture on Thursday. You can see the air is transitioning
04:29to something slightly cooler, slightly colder and low pressure although it sits towards
04:34the north of Scotland with showers circulating around it. We've lost the forcing on those.
04:39So, yes, the winds will turn a little bit lighter towards the east. A bit of a squeeze
04:43further west into Friday across Northern Ireland but notice towards the south west here. This
04:48is high pressure and it will extend across the country into the weekend meeting another
04:54cell of high pressure across Scandinavia. So, things will turn colder with increasing
04:59chance of frost but also some drier and brighter weather. See you later.
