00:00Hello. I'm on the launch of the new BMW 6 Series Grand Coupe. I've arrived in Strasbourg.
00:17This is a UK car, and as usual for BMW with a UK launch, we're going to get to drive the
00:21car back all the way to the UK. Now I'm going to set off from here, and it's probably not
00:26too far from Calais, maybe about 6 hours, but I'm actually going to take a diversion
00:30to the Nürburgring because it's the 24-hour race. And, well, we'll see how we get on with
00:35this car en route, so I'll check back with you later.
00:39Well, this is great. I'm pretty much chugging along in congested traffic. So I'm going to
00:48go left in about a kilometre and continue to follow the A35 because I'm going to the
00:53Nürburgring. Now, the only problem is that it's going to take me about three hours to
00:58get there, and I'm supposed to be taking part in some M car procession on the Nürburgring
01:03because it's the M Festival, and there's a BMW M5 waiting for me. The only problem is
01:08that, one, I haven't had my safety briefing, which is supposed to be happening right now,
01:12and the other problem is that the actual procession starts in about three hours, so I don't know
01:18if I'm going to make it. What I do know is that this car's pretty good for just chugging
01:24along in traffic at 60mph because I've got the drive select in comfort mode, so it's
01:30just wafting me about nice and easy. I wish it'd stop interrupting me. It's bloody annoying.
01:40I can see I know where I've got to go. Shut up. Can't tell people about this car. Sorry
01:45about that. OK, you're going to witness one of the annoying things of driving a British
01:53car, I won't say British, it's German obviously, but a UK spec car back to the UK through France
01:59because we come to the Payage, and I have to pretty much get out to get my bloody ticket.
02:12I guess you're right, my life, it's just so tough, you feel very sorry for me, I know.
02:20We're in park, don't want to be running away.
02:24That's very embarrassing. Hopefully the barrier stays up. There we go, right.
02:45It always helps if you start the engine.
03:00Right, that's just cost me a minute, so I don't know if I'm going to actually make it to this M car procession.
03:09This is why I'm a fast car, it's actually the diesel, it's a 3 litre twin turbo diesel,
03:22and it has 313bhp, and BMW says it's good for 0-62mph in 5.4 seconds. That's really
03:32quick isn't it, don't you think, for a diesel? And the best thing is, diesels are normally
03:37badly and don't sound great do they, but have another listen to this.
03:47That's a pretty good sound I reckon.
03:54One thing I've noticed is lots of people have been looking at this car, one driver in particular
03:59is very intriguing, I'll just see if I can level with him because he keeps coming past
04:02me and then dropping back, it's this guy here in a 5 series, him and his mates, I think
04:09between them, they've got a combined age of about 562, they're a little bit grey haired.
04:16They're really impressed with this, keep driving past them, yeah look at them, they're brilliant.
04:21Probably not doing it in a Birmingham accent because they'd say they're Dutch.
04:27Well finally, I've arrived at the Nürburgring. It's taken me a while because I had to pull
04:35over and have a nap for about 2 hours because I started to fall asleep behind the wheel.
04:40But anyway, here we are, and just in time, it's started to rain. Brilliant. Thankfully
04:48though, I have got some hospitality, look at all these little tags I've got. So I should
04:55be able to get pretty much access to all areas. All I need now is my VIP parking pass
05:02and I'm away. There you go, worked on that guy. But once again, I'm going to have to
05:10do the bloody reach over. Anyway, see you later.
05:17OK then, day 2, been to the Nürburgring 24 hour race, heading back to Cologne now to
05:23the UK, and I've just sat on the Autobahn, just around, I think we're around Cologne.
05:30I'm doing 80mph, I'm going to floor it because this section is de-restricted. So, 100!
05:38This car is very quick. 120!
05:48130!
05:52140!
05:55This is just ridiculously quick, this car just sits here at 150mph.
06:03It's all getting a bit quick. Just shy of 160mph, and I think the speed limit has just
06:10cut in, I am maxing out. This car, not on the floor, 160mph. I'm going to slow down
06:16and run up again, that's just what that gives me.
06:21OK then, my journey's almost over, so what do I think of this car? I have to say, I'm
06:26very, very impressed with it. It's a beautiful looking thing on the outside, I reckon it's
06:30probably BMW's best design at the moment. It's lovely inside, you can actually sit adults
06:34in the back, there's a big boot, it goes like stink, and in the case of this diesel, it's
06:40really economical. BMW claim 50 miles per gallon, I mean if I looked down the trim it'd
06:44say 35 miles per gallon, but then remember I have been maxing it out at 155mph on the
06:50Autobahn. This car can set you back £61,000 as a base price, and it does feel worth it.
06:57I'm just going to tell you, this one's actually got £20 worth of options on it, £81,000
07:01that makes it, but I don't think you need to spend that much. Still, if you do, you're
07:07going to end up with a really, really satisfying machine. Great for crossing continents, handles
07:13well with the German twisty roads, I enjoyed it. It is a really impressive car, probably,
07:19dare I say it, BMW's best at the moment. There you go, there's that for a verdict.
07:27Thanks for watching.
