00:00There are some problems with my old Porsche Cayenne.
00:02The thermostat doesn't seem to work because the engine never gets up to temperature.
00:05There's a leak from somewhere in the coolant system.
00:08The brake booster pipes have broken and have a bodge repair on them.
00:12The tyres are old and falling apart.
00:14Whenever I start this car up, I get plumes of horrible smoke,
00:19which looks like it's burning oil.
00:21The rear window release doesn't work.
00:24The gearbox sometimes clunks when changing gear.
00:27There are a few fault codes on the car, but worst of all,
00:30it has suddenly started leaking water from the roof.
00:34As a result, I have to put a half cover over this car every night.
00:38It's a really good cover from Classic Editions, does the job of keeping the rain out,
00:42but I'd rather get that issue fixed.
00:44Otherwise, this car is going to start smelling like an old shed.
00:49Now, I'm heading off to Porsche Reading to get this car not only serviced,
00:52but as many of those faults fixed as possible.
00:55I'm a little bit worried how much all this is going to cost.
01:02I'd like to introduce you all to John.
01:04John is the guy that's going to be making my classic Cayenne like new.
01:08Did you work on these when they were new?
01:09Yeah, I don't see them quite so often, but still remembering things.
01:13And you work on classic Porsches, such as...
01:15From 356.
01:16Right up to...
01:17Latest GT3 RS, Taycan.
01:19Quite a wide range then!
01:21And this car is now classed as a classic,
01:23because of your classic scheme.
01:24And actually, I thought it'd be a bit weird,
01:26cars of this generation go through the classic scheme,
01:28but I've noticed quite a few 996s in here.
01:30But I suppose, like you say, you do 356s, G-Series, 911s,
01:34and all that kind of stuff as well.
01:35I bought the car into you yesterday.
01:36You've done some prep work on it.
01:38What have you done so far?
01:39We've changed the ATF oil.
01:41So that's the automatic transmission fluid.
01:43Now, I had a problem with that.
01:44It was like occasionally the car, like maybe in fourth gear,
01:46it was just like...
01:47What could be causing that?
01:49So it could be the oil quality.
01:50Depending on the previous use,
01:51the oil can degrade from that point of view, naturally.
01:54Obviously, there are external influences.
01:55If you've got the right tyres,
01:56and also any differential in tyre tread depth,
01:59or anything like that.
01:59I haven't got the right tyres, have I?
02:00Those are the wrong wheels for the car, aren't they?
02:02They are, they're from an E2, I think, so...
02:04You've also done an oil change.
02:06You notice that the oil condition
02:07probably could have done with a change.
02:08That's interesting though,
02:09because I actually had the car serviced recently,
02:11and they put fresh oil in it.
02:12But I think the service before then
02:14hadn't been done for a few years.
02:15Would there still be bits of old oil
02:17left in the engine or something?
02:18Exactly that, yeah.
02:18So the engine is dirty inside,
02:21the carbon deposits, that sort of thing.
02:22The oil will flush it off of the metal parts,
02:25and then take it back into the oil.
02:26So if you get an old car,
02:28and it hasn't had an oil change for ages,
02:30it might be worth doing one oil change,
02:33and then shortly after, another oil change.
02:35Another thing that you looked at,
02:36the fan on the car, it would run for a bit,
02:38and then it would just stop working.
02:39You've removed the old fan,
02:41now put a new fan in.
02:42You've obviously prepped it for the more serious jobs,
02:45which are coming up in a bit.
02:47Yeah, so the header tank,
02:48obviously Lewis had identified that it was leaking.
02:50We've got a thermostat going in.
02:51Now these cars are known for having problems
02:53with their coolant pipes.
02:54Any issues, can you see?
02:55So E1KN, they had plastic coolant pipes
02:57running down the V,
02:58and when we went to E1 too,
02:59they changed that design.
03:00There's a few plastic pipes in there,
03:02but not as many as they used to be with the E1.
03:04The only plastic part that is in there
03:05is a socket between the thermostat housing
03:07and the water pump,
03:08and we're going to replace that anyway.
03:09Okay, perfect.
03:10I thought I'd help you out today, John,
03:11maybe keep the labour rate down
03:13by acting as your assistant.
03:14Every little helps.
03:15Yeah, you're welcome to my pocket, anyway.
03:18So I'll be assisting you in some of the fixes.
03:21We'll see whether I'm actually a help or a hindrance.
03:25Now I know my old K may have a few problems,
03:27such as the leak.
03:29However, I do know that it hasn't been stolen,
03:32it hasn't been written off,
03:33it hasn't had its mileage wound back,
03:34and it hasn't got any outstanding finance on it.
03:37And I know all that because I was sensible enough
03:40to run its registration through CarVertical
03:43before I bought it.
03:45And the CarVertical report came back all clean,
03:48which is good news.
03:49However, that's not always the case
03:51with every used vehicle.
03:53You see, not all cars have a clean past.
03:56Here's a different CarVertical report
03:58on another Porsche Cayenne.
03:59It's a new one, a diesel from 2016.
04:02And while it checks out in terms of theft,
04:04finance and mileage,
04:05there is a flag against it for damage.
04:08And as I scroll down,
04:10I can actually see pictures of the damage on the car.
04:13It appears to have been in a front-end collision
04:15and it's obviously severe enough
04:17to have triggered the airbags,
04:18which is not good.
04:20So if I was looking to buy this car,
04:21I'd have run its registration through CarVertical,
04:23seen these pictures and thought,
04:25no, I'm not gonna buy that.
04:26So if you're thinking about buying a used car,
04:28make sure you don't buy one with a dodgy past.
04:30Go to CarVertical and use the code WATSON for 20% off.
04:34I've actually put a link to CarVertical
04:37in the description of this video
04:38and my pin comment to take you directly there.
04:41Or you can use the pop-out banner
04:43that should be appearing
04:44in the top right-hand corner of the screen
04:45to go directly there.
04:46Or the QR code, just scan it with your phone
04:48and you go straight to CarVertical
04:50and use the code WATSON for 20% off.
04:53In fact, if you've bought a car
04:54but you never checked its past,
04:55you should do a CarVertical report on it now
04:57just to make sure you're not driving around
04:59in something that's been damaged and could be unsafe.
05:03And don't forget, use the code WATSON for 20% off.
05:06Anyway, let's get on with the video.
05:08So John, I obviously had this leaky roof issue.
05:11I came to it one morning
05:12and there's water leaking from the sunglasses holder.
05:15It's filled the passenger footwell.
05:17The car was slightly parked like that,
05:18so it was leaning towards the passenger side.
05:20What might have caused that?
05:22What tends to happen is that the plenum panels
05:23fill up with debris, leaves, and things like that.
05:26Where are the plenum panels?
05:27So this section around here.
05:28Yeah.
05:29Around by the-
05:29It looks clean.
05:30Right, I've given it a clean now.
05:32The drain's block, it fills up past the servo there.
05:35Yeah, past this, yeah.
05:36And then it defeats the drain.
05:38So the drain then backs up into the roof
05:40and then it's spilled into the roof console
05:42and that sort of thing.
05:43Was there much in there?
05:45Fair bit.
05:45We've taken it and it's in the Hoover, so a fair bit.
05:47And it looks like-
05:49Wait a minute.
05:49We've seen-
05:50Wait, so this was all-
05:52Yes.
05:53Look at this!
05:54Look at this!
05:55This is like-
05:56This was all in-
05:57There was a lot-
05:57In there?
05:58Yes, there's a big area in there.
05:59What about the other side?
06:00Yeah, both sides.
06:01A lot of that.
06:02But we have found-
06:02What's this?
06:03It looks like it may have had a mouse in at some point.
06:05So this is a sticker from-
06:06That's from the wiring loom behind that area.
06:08Oh, look, yeah.
06:08Look, it's the original sticker, K&Turbo.
06:10And it's been eaten by a mouse.
06:11It does look like, yeah.
06:12You haven't found a mouse, have you?
06:14We haven't at the moment, but I'm still on the lookout, so.
06:16So we think that will solve the leaky roof issue.
06:19Yes.
06:20And I would say this evidence is pretty damning.
06:25That's never been done, has it?
06:26Not for a while, no.
06:28John, I think we need to talk about this particular part now.
06:31It's been taped up-
06:32A few times, yeah.
06:33And here.
06:34I think that was me, actually.
06:36This was the cause of my braking issue.
06:38Essentially, it's a vacuum line that takes vacuum from the pump on the back of the engine.
06:43Into the brake booster, which makes the brakes feel much lighter.
06:46Which Lewis in the press office fixed with his tape.
06:48He did.
06:48And he did the job.
06:49It would do, yeah.
06:50So it would last for a while, but it's temporary repair.
06:52So while we're here, we can put a new pipe in there.
06:54See, because we've got everything off.
06:55And this is the new part of the new pipe there.
06:57First half going in now, yeah.
06:58And we'll put the other bit in later.
06:59But how dangerous was it?
07:01Like, with the gaps in the hose?
07:02It increases the braking effort required from the driver.
07:05I noticed that.
07:05It was like a racing car.
07:06Yeah, yeah.
07:07There's no assistance at all.
07:09Always good to have your brakes working properly.
07:11While Jon is putting things back in the plenum, ready for the new expansion tank to go in,
07:15I thought I'd show you the old one.
07:16You can see that the seam has actually corroded.
07:19And it's been leaking coolant out here.
07:21It's because it's this two-piece design.
07:22And eventually, over time, it's just worn out, this seal.
07:25And it's failed.
07:26Now, this was the reason why, when the car was first delivered to me,
07:29it was, like, leaking coolant over a long drive.
07:32It was a major concern when it first showed up.
07:34I thought, oh my god, what have I bought?
07:36But it's not that big of a deal.
07:37And we're going to fix it right now.
07:41So, Jon, I could see you're having a bit of a battle getting the old thermostat out.
07:55Would you be replacing this plastic part anyway?
07:57Yes.
07:57Do you want to know something?
07:58I actually was considering doing the thermostat replacement myself,
08:01having seen someone do it on YouTube.
08:03But having seen you, an expert of how many, 30 years, struggle, shall we say?
08:07There's no way.
08:08It's just access and, like I say, bits of plastic and things like that,
08:11quite sharp down there as well.
08:13So feel free, crack on and do it.
08:14Yeah, you cut your knuckles, haven't you?
08:15Yeah, it's a little bit scratchy.
08:17This is the old water pump.
08:18You say this has been replaced already?
08:20That socket has been replaced in the history.
08:21We can see that it leaked.
08:22And there's some debris down the middle of the V, old coolant.
08:25So this socket had leaked in the past.
08:27Because the gasket isn't available separately, once you've taken it off, fit a new one.
08:31Yeah, because you don't want to do all this work and then the water pump to fail.
08:34But this was the problem here.
08:35It is the thermostat.
08:37This moves backwards and forwards,
08:38and it opens and shuts the valve to let either coal or coolant through.
08:41But the thing that controls it is this device here,
08:44which almost looks like a cigarette lighter.
08:46And what happened is this seized in the open position.
08:49Seized in the open position.
08:49When the car got really hot and it remained open ever since,
08:52it was running cooler than it should have been for normal driving.
08:55It was probably fueling slightly rich,
08:57which means that now this is fixed, it should have more power.
09:00Potentially.
09:01Yes, I could imagine that it has.
09:04Right, and so that's all very interesting and very key
09:06to getting this car running as best as possible.
09:09But there's still more to do.
09:10John has been doing all the work so far, but I want to have a little go.
09:13What I'd like to work on,
09:14because this is something I was definitely going to do myself,
09:16is the glass release here at the back.
09:19The switch isn't working.
09:20So are you all right to let me do it?
09:22I can show you what to do to release it.
09:23Obviously, as the switch doesn't work,
09:25we can't pop the glass until we've opened the rear lid and there's a manual release.
09:28Okay, so open this up.
09:30Yeah, little trim to remove there.
09:32There's a little catch just there.
09:34Push it in and it should release.
09:35Whey! Result!
09:37So I know where the emergency release is.
09:39So now I've got it open, you can get access to...
09:42Rear wiper link.
09:43But we don't need to touch this and we don't need to touch that
09:45because there's no problems with that.
09:47I've just got to get amongst this bit here.
09:48Yeah.
09:49So what causes these switches to fail?
09:50Is it just water getting in?
09:51Water ingress into the plastic, really.
09:53So that's the switch wiring there.
09:55George, you need to undo that.
09:58There we go.
09:58Test the switch.
10:00It isn't necessarily the switch.
10:01It might be the motor, it might be...
10:02But generally...
10:03The motor, though, is in...
10:05Is in that section.
10:05So we definitely don't want it to be that.
10:07Yeah.
10:07Oh!
10:08So we can plug that in just as a test.
10:11Okay.
10:12That's it.
10:12And then we lock it over.
10:14Please work when I press it.
10:15Yes!
10:16Your job's easy, John!
10:20So now we need to take the wiper arm off.
10:22You get a new one of these, which is good because it breaks quite regularly.
10:26There we go.
10:27That's the one.
10:28Someone's glued it already.
10:30Someone's been there before.
10:31This is not its first time at the rodeo.
10:34The issues we have moving on from this point,
10:36the wiper arm's made of plastic and invariably it corrodes on.
10:38So we think that's going to snap?
10:40Potentially.
10:40We've got a spare just in case, so we'll be all right.
10:42Okay, I'm going to do this though, John, so it's all on me.
10:45Righty tighty, lefty loosey.
10:47Oh!
10:48So it's come undone.
10:49Telling part is whether that actually comes off of the spline.
10:52And what you don't want to do is leave it on the glass.
10:54No, exactly.
10:55Because that's when you smash your window and you're in all sorts of...
10:58No.
10:59Yeah, no, that's...
11:00See, so basically what we would use, we've got a puller that we can use.
11:03So this is one of the things you know that this is a problem.
11:06So you've got all these specialist tools.
11:09Blimey.
11:10And you're grimacing there, aren't you?
11:12Yeah, and like I say, generally it won't come off.
11:14It will just go with a pop if it's going to come off.
11:18And it's just broke the arm, which is good because that's what normally happens.
11:23Ha ha ha ha!
11:24True to form for the K-Ed.
11:26Yes.
11:26So we're going to have to cut that off.
11:28Okay, let's do that bit.
11:29Okay.
11:36So John's going to just torque the rear glass up.
11:38I don't want to do it because, get this wrong,
11:39the whole glass panel just goes crack.
11:42I hope you've got the right setting for your...
11:43Oh, there it was.
11:44You were a little bit nervous there.
11:46Yes, I was thinking, it feels like it's too much.
11:50So basically the switch should be level in the central position.
11:54That's not central.
11:55No, let's give it a go.
11:56Oh, but hasn't it got a grommet in it?
11:59It has, it's got a guide.
12:00Keeping it central.
12:01Okay, so I'll hold this.
12:06It's not quite level again.
12:07I didn't hold it far enough.
12:11Maybe we held it a bit further around.
12:13Good job you had an hourly rate, isn't it?
12:16Go for it.
12:17Third time lucky.
12:21Yes, that is level.
12:24If it's not level, we'll make it look level in post.
12:30There's a bit of play in it, but that's because it's just what it is.
12:33So do you go for...
12:34Go for lower rather than higher.
12:36Go for level.
12:36Okay, so that's where it's going to end up there,
12:38because it's got to have the weight of that on there.
12:39So whack that on.
12:41So John, did you get it right?
12:42Did you get it level?
12:43Go level.
12:45John, I was right, mate.
12:46One too high.
12:47First time today I've been right.
12:48Victory at last.
12:51That's it.
12:54I think that'll be it.
12:55I think you're right.
12:56Yeah, let's tighten that up.
13:04Finally, that took about an hour,
13:06and that was with your help knowing what to do.
13:08Do you know what?
13:08I don't think I want to do any more, John.
13:09I'm going to leave you to get on with some other bits.
13:11Okey dokey.
13:12When I originally had my car checked over
13:15by Lewis in the press office,
13:17he noticed some oil that he reckons
13:19were coming from the boost pipes.
13:21And I've also got the symptom that when I turn the car on,
13:24for the first few seconds,
13:25a big load of like smoke comes out the back,
13:27but it doesn't continue smoking.
13:28It's just like one big poof of smoke.
13:30Could that be caused by these boost pipes?
13:33Yeah, so the external leak is exactly that.
13:35It's coming out of the seal
13:37and also the jubilee clamp,
13:38and that's what's causing the leak.
13:40The seal and also the jubilee clip end,
13:42once oil gets in the pipe,
13:44stays in and then builds up,
13:46then the intercooler will start to fill up with oil.
13:48And then it sits in the intake,
13:50and then you turn it off,
13:51it all runs down to the lowest points,
13:52which is the intake valves.
13:53And the next time you start it,
13:54that's when you get cloudless smoke.
13:56Like I say, periodically,
13:57we would take these off and empty them anyway,
13:58but these have obviously passed their best.
14:00I would say they're probably the originals,
14:01if I tip it so we can see it dripping out there.
14:03And if you look down here,
14:06all this oil in there came out these boost pipes.
14:08Yeah, so I would say about that full up.
14:10Wow, right.
14:11So you think that after changing the pipes,
14:13we've emptied out that oil
14:14and I shouldn't have that smoke on start-up anymore?
14:17We would hope not, no.
14:18I hope not, because that could be something more serious.
14:21Obviously, the turbo could have an issue.
14:22The symptoms that we've got in front of us,
14:24that's the way we would look at it.
14:25Most likely that.
14:26Let's hope it is.
14:33Well, John, you've done it.
14:34You completed all the tasks.
14:35It was great to see a professional in action.
14:37Did it take you back working on this old car?
14:39Yeah, it's like seeing an old friend and catching up.
14:42I'm really sorry about hindering you with some of the tasks,
14:44especially doing this.
14:45I think I got in the way,
14:46but it was satisfying to actually be part of fixing the car
14:49and I'm really glad that works now.
14:50I'm really looking forward to driving it
14:52to see if, you know, we fix some of those things
14:54that we're not sure about, like, you know, the smoke on start-up.
14:56Thank you very much for doing the car.
14:57It's been a real pleasure working with you.
15:00Well, getting in your way.
15:02Anyway, do you know what I've got to do now?
15:03I've got to go get the bill.
15:04Oh, I'll leave you to that.
15:07All right, and so I've picked the car up.
15:09I'll tell you about how much it all came to in a moment.
15:11First things first, though, I'm going to put this thing into sports mode
15:14because it really changes how it drives.
15:15I actually haven't really been able to push this car
15:18because I've just been too worried about those rubbish old tyres.
15:20But now with these Michelins on, I can have some fun.
15:23I'll tell you what, I can't believe how big and heavy this car is,
15:27yet how well it goes around corners.
15:29I mean, Porsche absolutely nailed the dynamics of this car.
15:32Wow, it just handles so well.
15:35What I'm going to do actually is keep it in sports mode,
15:38so it's aggressive for the gearbox and the engine,
15:40but the air suspension's in comfort mode and now it just glides.
15:44I mean, back in the day, it must have just blown
15:46every single other SUV out of the water.
15:50Look at this.
15:51Whoa!
15:53The steering's slower than modern Cayennes,
15:56but the chassis balance is just absolutely bang on.
16:00That is so much fun and the performance from this engine.
16:03Oh my God.
16:05Do you know what?
16:06The previous 955, the earlier version, the pre-facelift with the 4.5,
16:10when I've driven them, they just don't feel as fast as this.
16:12This sport button has a lot to do with it.
16:14It just changes the character of the car.
16:16It just makes everything more aggressive.
16:18The engine response is just so instant.
16:21The gearbox is just more responsive as well.
16:24And they didn't have that button on the 955, the earlier generation car.
16:28And it's great to see the thermostat is working.
16:31The engine is up to temperature.
16:32Obviously, I wouldn't have been thrashing it if it wasn't.
16:35Let's have another go.
16:36Go back into sport.
16:37Changes the character instantly and the noise.
16:40And I have confidence in the brakes now because they've been repaired properly
16:44rather than some bodge job with some tape.
16:47And the way it deals with the bumps with the air suspension, incredible.
16:50I'm going to put it back into comfort mode and just chill for a bit
16:53because I really want to just test this gearbox.
16:55I'm going to change into fourth now.
16:57Smooth as you like.
16:58It's funny, isn't it?
16:59How sometimes just a service can make a car feel so much better.
17:03Another thing to test.
17:05Oh, yeah, the blower fan.
17:07It works.
17:08This thing almost drives like a new car.
17:10Now, I haven't been able to test whether it's still leaking.
17:13Hopefully not after all that stuff was pulled out the car,
17:16which is probably blocking the drains.
17:17They have tested it.
17:18The pressure tested it.
17:19They left outside and no water leaked in.
17:22So we should be good on that one because a leak in a car is terrible.
17:26But I have to say, I'm really, really pleased so far.
17:28I think we should probably pull over and find out how much it all cost me.
17:31This Mark 1 Porsche Cayenne is now old enough to qualify for Porsche's classic register.
17:36That means discounted labour and parts rates.
17:39I bear that in mind when I'm giving you the cost of all the bits I've had done to the car.
17:43Engine oil and filter change, £406.
17:46Gearbox oil and filter change, £450.
17:49Power steering fluid and tank change.
17:52Didn't know I needed that done, though, to be fair,
17:53the student did judder a bit when he was stationary and turning full lock.
17:57Doesn't do that anymore.
17:58That was £428.
18:00Coolant tank replacement and flush, £275.
18:04Water pump and thermostat, £690.
18:07Brake booster vacuum line, £208.
18:10Boost hoses, £301.
18:14Blower fan replacement, £319.
18:17Brake fluid and caliper bleed screws, £302.
18:22Rear wiper crank and switch, £571.
18:27Engine oil cap, £8.
18:29And windscreen washer cap, also £8.
18:31That means a total spent £3,967.
18:38Now, when you add that to the price I paid for the car, £7,500,
18:42I'm all in for this vehicle, £11,500.
18:47I guess, right, I could have bought one in brilliant condition,
18:51similar mileage, and it probably have cost that.
18:53And to be fair, you know, I'd have ended up finding some things wrong
18:56with that supposedly brilliant car.
18:58Who knows? Who knows, right?
18:59Now, you might be thinking, wait a minute, Matt.
19:01If you'd have gone to an independent dealer, the parts and labour would have cost you less.
19:04Well, no, not the parts, but labour, yes.
19:07But, you know, some people want to go to their main dealer for that main dealer stamp,
19:11and maybe they'll have their new Porsche serviced by the main dealer,
19:14and they just want to get their older ones done through them as well.
19:17I mean, there were plenty of old classic Porsches in the workshop when I was there.
19:21So anyway, you pays your money, you takes your choice.
19:24Now, considering I've paid all that money for this car,
19:26I think we need to test the performance.
19:28According to Porsche, this Cayenne 2007 4.8 should do 0-60 in 5.1 seconds.
19:34So I'm going to see how quick it really is,
19:35and that'll give me an indication of how many horses it has lost over the years.
19:40Does it still have the full 500 horsepower?
19:42While I'm at it, I may as well measure a quarter mile time as well.
19:44So I'm going to put it into sport mode.
19:46I'll lower the suspension down a bit and feel it going down.
19:49Then I'm just going to brake boost it and time it with my specialist timing gear.
19:53That shot off really well.
19:55Come on, what's 0-60?
19:574.85, that's good.
19:59What's the standing quarter mile, though?
20:02Come on.
20:04This is so quick for an old car.
20:0613.2 seconds.
20:08Ooh, that's not bad, you know.
20:12That 0-60, though, 4.85 from an old car like this.
20:16I don't think it's lost any horsepower.
20:18I really don't.
20:19Nice.
20:20I'm happy.
20:21What I'm going to do now is a brake test from 60 miles an hour.
20:25See how good the brakes are on this old car.
20:27Here we go, anchors on.
20:28No.
20:31Now, I'm wanting it to have done it in about 35 metres, 108 feet.
20:36That's 33 metres.
20:37That's really, really very good.
20:39I'm shocked.
