00:00Hi, how are you? Matt Watson here.
00:02So I'm super excited today because I'm heading off in my little Suzuki Jimny to buy myself a new car.
00:09It's a Porsche, but it's probably not quite the Porsche you're expecting.
00:17This is a Mark 1 Porsche Cayenne Turbo and it's up for sale for £9,000.
00:23I've been after one of these for a while because I think it will be the perfect tow car for my forthcoming 911 GT3 RS.
00:30Anyway, let's see if this one's any good.
00:31So we've found the car. I'm going to have a look at it before we speak to the owner.
00:35It's good to do that, you know. Let's go check it out without someone watching over me.
00:40Right. It's on some big wheels. Are they official wheels?
00:43I'm not convinced, but they might be. They are large and new tyres.
00:47First impressions on the paint. Looks pretty good.
00:50Yeah, right. So this is... I don't know what's going on there.
00:53Yeah. Some of this here as well.
00:56You know, it's quite an old car though, right? Let's have a look around the back.
00:59I don't think those exhaust pipes are original.
01:02That's a good thing. I mean, really?
01:04I'd say don't buy a car with a tow bar because obviously the engine's been under more stress.
01:08But I do want a tow bar on it, so it's going to save me some money.
01:12Actually looks all right underneath. Have a look underneath.
01:14There's some rust on some of the wishbones, but that's to be expected at this age.
01:17Right, let's look around the other side.
01:19Yeah, once again, these trim little bits here.
01:22Do you know what? I've got a magnet.
01:26Yeah, it's all metal so far.
01:29But it's obviously aluminium, all full of filler.
01:32I've got the keys, obviously, that's why I'm sat inside it.
01:35Let's start it up.
01:39I'm really looking out for a ticking sound because these cars can suffer from bore scoring
01:43and a sign of that is a tick, tick, tick, tick, tick.
01:46This one though, very smooth. It's purring.
01:49Yeah, like a big black panther.
01:54Whoa.
01:55Oh yes, this sounds pretty good.
01:57Quality in here, it's really good considering the age.
02:00And there's something I've just discovered that I'm very, very happy about.
02:03It's got ISOFIX here on the front passenger seat,
02:06so that's going to be really handy for me because I've got a two-year-old.
02:08It looks pretty good here on the inside.
02:10I'm going to just check a couple of features.
02:12When the roof opens, that's good.
02:14Right, another thing, does the diff lock?
02:17Well, the light flashes to signify that it does.
02:19But it really has.
02:22Let's assume that it has.
02:23What else? Oh, look, it's got an aftermarket infotainment system,
02:27which in some ways is bad because it's not original,
02:29but in some ways is good because I'm going to have Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
02:33And let's have a look.
02:36That's handy. It's got a reversing camera as well.
02:38Does the aircon work? Let's try that.
02:40Does it go cold? Yes, that's good.
02:42Thank you. That would be a major headache.
02:44What else can I check?
02:47Ah, that doesn't seem to undo the boot.
02:50Windows. Yeah.
02:52Let's do the door mirrors.
02:55Yes, they work.
02:57OK, let's check out the back seats.
02:59Everything back here looks in really good condition.
03:01You know, this is almost a 20-year-old car and the seats have hardly been sat on.
03:06Oh, look, it's even got heated seats back here.
03:08Yeah, that's coming on. I can tell that's working.
03:10And then it looks like it's coming a bit loose.
03:12It's not major.
03:13And all the headlining is nicely fitted still.
03:16Sometimes they can sag on these cars.
03:18Yeah, it looks good. Check out the boot now.
03:20First thing I want to check is this.
03:21Love this feature.
03:23Oh, yeah, that is really, really handy.
03:25And it works. Now let's try out the boot itself.
03:30Oh, wait, wait a minute.
03:31Seems like it wants to fall down.
03:33Don't want to get clonked on the head by that because it's rather heavy.
03:37See what we've got under here.
03:38Got the subwoofer there for the Bose sound system.
03:41Nice to have the Bose.
03:42And that is the compressor for the air suspension.
03:46We've got the load cover and what looks like the just like the
03:50yeah, the mesh for the dog guard.
03:52Maybe I could keep my daughter back here and that net would stop her
03:55from slobbering all over the seats like some kind of crazy Labrador.
03:59Anyway, that's looking pretty good.
04:01But that might need looking at.
04:04Anyway, there is something else I really need to check on it.
04:07Let's have a close listen to the engine.
04:08So that like ticking sound is just the valve train.
04:12Not a problem at all.
04:13If it was bore scoring and piston slap, it would be more like
04:17so that's fine.
04:18Now, what I should do is check the oil level and the coolant.
04:22But I've started the engine.
04:24I've done it the wrong way around.
04:25That was a bit silly of me.
04:26So I'll probably have to check them later when the car is cooled down a bit.
04:29In the meantime, there are some other things I can do to check the health of the car.
04:34I've got my Kali OBD reader here.
04:36I'm going to plug it into the car's OBD port.
04:40There we go.
04:41And now I'm going to connect to the scanner with my Kali app
04:46and do a systems check, see if we can find any fault codes.
04:50Now, sometimes you get fault lights on the dash, but sometimes you don't.
04:54And there can still be a fault code.
04:55So this is a good way to check if you're buying a car.
04:58So it's done the diagnostics check and the health status is all good.
05:02No issues found.
05:03However, I have been to visit a car in the past where I drove it.
05:07It didn't feel quite right.
05:08And there were no warning lights on the dash.
05:10But then I use my Kali device checked for fault codes
05:14and it came up with some faults with the turbocharger.
05:17Turns out the turbocharger was broken.
05:19So obviously I didn't buy that car, but this one's looking good.
05:22The Kali scanner can read a wide variety of ECUs
05:25depending on the make and age of car.
05:28For instance, on newer Porsches, as well as engine and gearbox,
05:31it can read ECUs for things like the navigation, steering wheel,
05:35body control units, light system and more.
05:38One of the great things about Kali is that for certain brands and vehicles,
05:42you can do coding.
05:43This allows you to change some of the car's features.
05:45For instance, on my old BMW X5, I've used Kali to make the car
05:50give an optical confirmation when I lock it.
05:54Now, if you want to get yourself a Kali device,
05:56you can click on the pop out banner up there or follow the link
05:59in the description below to get a Kali.
06:01Use the code MAT15 for 15% off.
06:04So the seller's kindly let me take the car for a test drive.
06:07So here we go.
06:09Try the air suspension out over these speed humps.
06:12Now, the normal Cayennes on the core springs can feel like really hard riding,
06:17but the turbo on the air suspension is much better.
06:20One thing I will do is once I've stopped, I'll test the air suspension out
06:24because you can raise and lower it.
06:25So I'll make sure that it all works fine.
06:28Go and find some naggity bumps to really test the suspension
06:31and no clunks or anything.
06:33No strange noises coming from the transmission.
06:35Seems to shift pretty smooth.
06:36So you've got sport suspension.
06:38Let's see if it feels a bit stiffer.
06:41Hmm, not sure I can tell any difference.
06:43Right, we're heading out onto a faster road now
06:46where I can check out some of the performance, make sure it's pulling properly.
06:49It's got 450 horsepower.
06:51Should feel quick, but it is heavy.
06:52The second generation Cayenne was actually lighter
06:55because they actually made it less serious for off-roading.
06:58So it didn't have the low ratio gearbox like this one has.
07:01So despite 450 horsepower, it won't be ballistic by today's standards,
07:04but should definitely feel it.
07:06Here we go then, let's floor it.
07:12And it's building a boost, I can see it.
07:14It's got like a boost pressure gauge.
07:17And then you do notice the brakes,
07:20that while they're fine, you know, I don't think there's anything wrong with them.
07:23Because this is so heavy, you do think,
07:25oh, I'd like a bit more braking.
07:27Oof.
07:28You do have to press the pedal quite hard.
07:30Then, wait, it's carrying.
07:31But they all work perfectly fine.
07:35I've just noticed something with the car.
07:37There's like a clonking sensation.
07:39And it wasn't happening that much.
07:41And I thought it was suspension, like going over the bumps,
07:43because sometimes air suspension can be a bit jarring when it hits a really sharp bump.
07:48But what I've done is put the car into low range mode.
07:51And now there's a sort of like clonking,
07:53almost like there's a problem with either the prop shaft or the drive shaft.
08:00Oh, that is a shame because this car is otherwise mint.
08:02Yeah, it's like something's dragging almost.
08:04Let's have a little look at that.
08:05If we can get it fathomed out as to what it is,
08:08then I'll still be interested.
08:10But it does need to be looked at.
08:11OK, so that was a little bit of a shame
08:14because this car overall is very, very nice.
08:17I just noticed that slight weird clonk when I was driving along slowly.
08:21It was intermittent.
08:22But then when I put it in low range mode, it was more consistent.
08:25Shame.
08:26What I'm going to do is get the seller to have it checked out
08:31and then we'll take it from there.
08:32I'm still keen to take the car if we can diagnose the fault
08:35and then get it fixed for a reasonable price.
08:38I'm sad, but I'm also pleased that I did spot the issue.
08:42It's been two weeks since I saw that Cayenne.
08:44And this is what happened in the meantime.
08:46The seller took the car to his mechanic.
08:48They found out that there was a leak from a gasket for the gearbox
08:52and the oil was low.
08:53And that was causing the juttering feeling that I was experiencing while driving it.
08:57That was only towards the very end of the test drive.
08:59I don't think the seller noticed it.
09:01I mean, I really had to explain it to them and they seemed really genuine.
09:04And they, you know, worked with me to go away and get it fixed.
09:07But I thought, you know what?
09:09Cars run low on gearbox oil.
09:11You know, is that a bad thing?
09:13It can't be good, right?
09:14So I called my friend who's a Porsche tech at Porsche GB,
09:17but he was away on a holiday
09:19and I didn't want to actually just get him by the car until I'd spoken to him.
09:22So I said to the seller, listen, I can't buy it until I speak to him.
09:26If someone else wants to buy it, let them.
09:27Anyhow, eventually I got in touch with my Porsche GB tech
09:32and he said, you know, those gearboxes,
09:34they're really tough.
09:35If it's been fixed, it should probably be fine.
09:37And the rest of the car was mint.
09:38So I called the seller back up again.
09:40But at that point they'd sold the car.
09:43So I was gutted.
09:45I did ask my Porsche tech why I didn't get a fault on my car late.
09:48And he said, bizarrely,
09:50there's no actual sensor in the gearbox on those cars to tell you when the oil is low.
09:54Anyhow, it was back to a case of searching the internet for a Cayenne.
09:59So I'm determined to get a Cayenne.
10:01However, I got a bit distracted
10:03and I found another car,
10:05well, another Porsche, actually, on an auction site.
10:07And I ended up buying it.
10:09And not only did I buy it,
10:11bizarrely, for some reason,
10:13I decided not to even go and see it because it was located in Scotland.
10:17So I just bought it blind.
10:18And it sent to me.
10:19And I'm sat in the car right now.
10:21Do you want to see what it is?
10:22Or have you guessed already?
10:23It is a Porsche Boxster 2.7 from 2003.
10:29I've only just had it delivered.
10:31So let's have a look around it to see what I've bought.
10:34I think it's going to be a bit special.
10:35OK, let's go check it out.
10:37So here at the front, it all looks really good.
10:40Straight, true.
10:42The paint on it is amazing.
10:44Look, it's actually like new.
10:46There's no fogging of the headlamps.
10:49And this is unbelievable.
10:50The alloy wheels, 18 inches Carrera wheels.
10:53There's no scuffs on them.
10:54Down the side, really good condition.
10:56No scuffs on the rear wheels.
10:57Oh, wait, wait, wait.
10:58Is that one?
10:59No, it's just a tyre.
11:01That's just muck.
11:02And that's just muck.
11:03The roof, that looks mint.
11:05Check it out around the back.
11:06One of the things to check on these,
11:08sooty exhaust pipe could indicate bore scoring.
11:11Although this particular car, the 2.7,
11:13it's very unlikely on this.
11:14This car has actually been garaged all its life.
11:17And this is the result.
11:18You've got to see the inside, though.
11:19Look, it is like new.
11:23And it's got the optional sport seats, which are lovely.
11:26And some extra bits on the inside.
11:28So we've got leather trim.
11:30All Boxsters didn't get this.
11:32And body coloured inserts.
11:33And check this out, the mileage.
11:36Less than 40,000 miles.
11:39Wow.
11:41I'll just shut that so you can get the full centre console experience.
11:46Look at that.
11:47Now, you're probably wondering how much I paid for this car.
11:49Boxsters like this, with such low mileage and in seemingly as good condition,
11:54are fetching about £10,000 right now.
11:57This one comes with full service history.
12:00One owner from you.
12:01Can you guess?
12:028,000 maybe?
12:03Got lucky?
12:04I paid £6,000 for the car you see here.
12:07Absolutely insane.
12:10And that's why I bought it blind, which I'd never normally do.
12:14It's not a great idea.
12:15So I actually got in contact with the seller through the online auction
12:19and had a chat with them.
12:20And they recognised my voice.
12:21They watched the Car Wow videos.
12:23So they're very friendly.
12:24I went through the whole process of his ownership, how he looked after it.
12:28And I got a whole heap of confidence about the car after chatting with him.
12:31So far, it's looking really, really good.
12:35However, I haven't taken it for a proper test drive yet.
12:39So that could throw out some nasty surprises.
12:42But there's one other thing I want to do first before I drive it.
12:47One thing I do need to do with my Boxster is to use my Carly to check for fault codes.
12:52Let's connect it up now.
12:54Come on, be lucky.
12:56OK, so I'll run Diagnostics.
12:59Check for issues.
13:00A few moments later.
13:02It's come up with 11 issues.
13:04The issues seem to be with the alarm system.
13:07I'm not too worried about this.
13:08I know the alarm works because I set it off myself.
13:11So what I'm going to do is double check it.
13:16And now I'm going to clear the issues.
13:19Here we are then, my first proper test drive in my new Porsche Boxster,
13:23which I really should have been doing this before I bought it.
13:28But there we go.
13:29Hopefully, it's not going to throw up anything worrying.
13:33So the engine certainly feels very smooth.
13:35Steering's good.
13:36It's a five-speed, this, being the 2.7 Boxster, not the Boxster S.
13:41And the throw is quite long, but it's all right.
13:45The bike points right in the middle, which is good.
13:48Try the brakes out.
13:50Brakes feel good.
13:51Let's get ABS involved.
13:53ABS works.
13:59Taking through these twisties.
14:02Handling seems pretty good.
14:03The suspension feels good.
14:04The weight goes over bumps.
14:06There's no clunks or anything.
14:07The engine is smooth.
14:09The throttle pedal's good.
14:10There's hardly any squeaks or rattles.
14:12Listen.
14:15I mean, the condition is really, really nice.
14:17It does feel like it's new, which is mad considering it's a 2003 car.
14:23Just goes to show you how, if you maintain a car and garage it, how well they can keep.
14:28Now, there is one thing that doesn't work, and the seller did tell me about this.
14:32He's a really good bloke.
14:33He said the air con doesn't work.
14:35He said it stopped working ages ago.
14:36He never got it fixed because he always drives it with the roof down and only on sunny days.
14:40Now, he says it just needs a re-gas, but I think it might be more than that,
14:43because gas doesn't just leave the system, does it?
14:46It's got to leave somewhere, and that'll be a leak.
14:49Now, I've actually checked the compressor.
14:51So when you turn the air con on, the compressor kicks in, but then the revs drop again,
14:55which make me think that it's cutting out the compressor
14:58because there's no gas in the system because of the leak.
15:01And most likely on these cars, it's probably one of the condensers,
15:05which aren't too much of a pain nor too much of an expense to fix.
15:09So I'll get that checked out.
15:11Doesn't mean it's getting a bit hot in here right now.
15:13So I think I'm going to pull over and put the roof down.
15:17Putting the roof down is dead simple.
15:19Unlatch this, press a button on the dash.
15:24Listen for any weird, like, straining or clonks.
15:31There are none.
15:32The roof works fine.
15:34It's a bit annoying you have to put the windows back up afterwards.
15:36Actually, I usually like to have them low for the full top-down experience.
15:41Anyway, let's get driving.
15:43Right, the car is fully warmed up.
15:44Let's give it a cheeky launch.
15:49Come on.
15:51Revs nicely.
15:54And it makes a great noise as it approaches 7,000 rpm.
15:59Now, it doesn't feel as powerful as a 3.4 litre in my Porsche 911 996.
16:05This is completely standard.
16:06My car has had a special hack to the exhaust to make it more rorty.
16:09With this, though, because the exhaust isn't noisy,
16:12you do get more intake sound.
16:14Do you know what?
16:15This thing, it's got a 2.7 litre naturally aspirated flat six with just 228 horsepower.
16:23But it feels enough for the road.
16:24You can really enjoy revving it out without actually going way too quickly.
16:29I'd definitely be going quicker in my 996 if I'd have revved that out like this.
16:33Now, I might put these windows up so you can hear me better.
16:35But generally, the buffeting, it isn't bad at all.
16:38I was a bit worried that I needed the S.
16:41But apparently, this is a bit more freer revving.
16:43And so it encourages you to take it all the way to seven.
16:45And it does, you can feel it pick up at the top end.
16:48You do have to work it.
16:49But I want a car that's fun, that has to be worked.
16:52The S has upgraded suspension as well.
16:54But do you know what?
16:54I may well get the suspension done on this.
16:56Get some aftermarket coilovers on it.
16:58Maybe get it polybushed as well.
16:59But I'm not going to do too much to it.
17:01Feels good.
17:02I really like it.
17:03I don't actually think it needs new suspension.
17:05I might just do it because, do you know what?
17:07I thought it was a massive, massive gamble buying a car blind.
17:12And I wouldn't recommend you do it at all.
17:14But, you know, I've got the advantage that if something goes wrong,
17:18it's good content, right?
17:20On this occasion, I don't think, not yet anyway, that anything's gone wrong.
17:25I'm really pleased with this.
17:26I hope you all enjoyed the video.
17:27If you did, give it a like.
17:29Click on the windows for some more videos.
17:30See you next time.
