Desalinating sea water with zero emissions is a difficut task, but this team is on the right track. Ocean Oasis uses wave power to purify sea water and produce fresh water.
Transcript
00:00Already, more than 300 million people rely on desalination for their fresh water supply,
00:15a number that is expected to triple by 2050.
00:18As of today, more than 90% of the energy for desalination comes from fossil fuels, which
00:24makes access to fresh water very carbon intensive.
00:40In Ocean Oasis, we are developing a new and very innovative sustainable technology for
00:46fresh water production offshore.
00:48We're using wave power to mechanically drive a desalination reverse osmosis process and
00:54pump fresh water to shore.
00:58It's a floating offshore structure that uses the relative motion between two floating bodies
01:07in a floating unit to pressurize seawater and drive it through a reverse osmosis desalination
01:12process.
01:22Our vision is a world without water scarcity, and for us, this is the main motivation in
01:29our work.
