00:55Brighton's walking wounded ahead of Newcastle, Darren? Any news on Jean-Paul van Gecke or
00:59Gilles Pedro?
01:00Yeah, they've still got a few injury issues going into this one. Hopefully, the international
01:07break would have cleared some of those up and there was good news for Jean-Paul van
01:13Gecke, as you mentioned. He was expected to be out for around about six weeks with this
01:19groin issue that he picked up during the second half of the 2-2 draw with Nottingham
01:25Forest. But he looks as though he's ahead of schedule. He was pictured training this
01:33week at the Brighton Lansing training ground and that was a welcome surprise for many people
01:39who thought he would be out for the next run of matches after the international break.
01:44So, whether he's going to be fit to play against Newcastle is a big question for Brighton
01:51fans. They've already got Adam Webster out who's looking dodgy with a thigh injury still.
01:57So, if Van Gecke can come back in time for the Newcastle game, that would be a huge boost
02:02for Brighton fans. But we're going to get an update from Herzela tomorrow morning once
02:07all the players have had a chance to assess them once they come back from their international
02:12break.
02:13It's encouraging signs for Van Gecke, but we'll know more first thing tomorrow morning.
02:18Jal Pedro, my hunch is that he's going to be unavailable. I think he's still struggling
02:24with the foot injury that he picked up, also against Nottingham Forest as well. So, that's
02:30a blow for Brighton. But encouragingly, Jorginho Rutter, he's been playing well for Brighton
02:37in Pedro's absence. So, hopefully that will continue for him.
02:41There was a bit of a concern as well for Carlos Bolivar. He had a bit of a problem
02:46whilst on international duty with Cameroon. So, we're keeping an eye on that one as well.
02:53Matthew O'Reilly, he's still out as well. But there could be returns for James Milner,
02:59Simon Odinga and also Soli March could be included in the squad for the first time for
03:05the 12 months. He was close to the Tottenham squad, but it just came too soon. But yeah,
03:12we'll be keeping an eye on all the injury news ahead of Newcastle on Sussex World.
03:16Yeah, it'd be good to see Soli March back. So, Newcastle and Brighton have almost identical
03:23records so far. Both have won three, drawn three and lost one from their first seven
03:27games. How do you see this playing out, Henry? And who are the danger men for Newcastle,
03:31do you think?
03:33Well, I think that Alexander Isak, if he's fit for this one, he suffered a foot injury
03:40in a 2-1 win against Wolverhampton Wanderers. And also Anthony Gordon, we've got to watch
03:45out for. He's scored twice this season for Newcastle. And even though they haven't had
03:50the best start, Newcastle, they are unbeaten in their last three Premier League home games
03:57against Brighton. Brighton have lost just two of their 14 Premier League meetings with
04:01Newcastle. And their last game, as we saw with Newcastle, was a 0-0 draw away to Everton,
04:08which was quite a tasty game. But I think if Brighton are able to start early, if we
04:14can shore up the defence, if Rutter is still firing on all cylinders and has a game similar
04:20to that that we saw that he had against Tottenham when we played at home to them and got that
04:263-2 victory then, I think that this could be a really good game for Brighton. I do think
04:32that our confidence is up, especially after that win and the way we were able to show
04:37resilience as a team. So, I think that this will be a really interesting spectacle and
04:41fixture for Albion fans to watch out for. And I can see Brighton being in Newcastle
04:46a really good game.
04:48Yeah, yeah. And Jankuba Minter joined from Newcastle during the summer for £30 million.
04:54Have you assessed his season so far, Henry? How have you assessed his season so far? And
04:59this will be his first appearances in Changes Park as he never actually played for the Magpies,
05:03didn't he?
05:04Exactly that. And when we signed him this summer for around £30 million from Feyenoord,
05:11he was known as a fan's favourite from Feyenoord fans. And he scored 10 goals and provided
05:17six assists in 27 league appearances. And I think Brighton fans initially saw him in
05:24that pre-season, saw that burst of pace that he has. He performed really well and he's
05:29a very exciting prospect. In the Premier League, however, in his first few games and appearances,
05:36we have seen that he lacks a bit of definition in the final third. That last pass sometimes
05:42is a little bit astray and that's why Idinga has been picked over him a couple of times
05:46in these last few games. But I do think that he's a really good player at 20 years old.
05:52He's just turned 20 recently. He's got bags of potential and I think that he'll have a
05:58little bit of confidence with the fact that he got a goal for us, his first Premier League
06:03goal in that 3-2 win against Tottenham. And that was the first goal that sort of sparked
06:08everything. He played a really solid performance there and he came off in the 87th minute.
06:13So he had basically the full 90 there and I can imagine him doing well and wanting to
06:18prove himself as well to Newcastle that actually they missed out on a real gem there. He looks
06:24like a player that is for the future. One of those ones where in a few seasons' time
06:29we'll be saying he's going to go to this team or this team in Europe, this team in the top
06:34six in the Premier League for hundreds of millions of pounds. Yet again, I think Brighton
06:39have done really well here.
06:41Are you a fan of him, Sam Minter?
06:44Yeah, I think there's some good signs from Minter actually. He started obviously in pre-season
06:50on fire. Definitely the man to really state his claims, that kind of most exciting signing
06:56and the one that was really having an impact. One thing I've really liked about him is his
07:00kind of pressing from the front. He's really good at winning the ball back high up the
07:03field, which Herzog was obviously really keen on installing in his players to make sure
07:09they press from the front and obviously can try and make a difference in that area of
07:14the pitch defensively. He's continued that in the league. He's very good at pressing
07:18and trying to win the ball back. There is still a raw element to him that I think is
07:23going to be obvious for a young player that's still going to learn his trade in the Premier
07:27League and there's still lots of room for improvement. It does feel like sometimes when
07:31he gets the ball, he doesn't really know what he's going to do, which can be a good thing.
07:36The defenders obviously can't predict it, but other times I think it does look like
07:40it's a little bit scattergun with his approach. But I feel like as he irons out his game,
07:44gets used to Premier League football and the style and everything like that, I think he's
07:48all set to be a really top-quality player.
07:51There was also an injury scare for Carlos Boliva during the international break. How
07:56important has he been for Fabian Herzog this term? I imagine he's the last player Brighton
08:01would want to be missing, wouldn't he, at this point?
08:03Exactly. He's been probably the star performer from the season, actually, for Brighton. He's
08:10been exceptional in every game that I've seen. There's been a couple of hairy moments where
08:14he's given away a penalty or two, so maybe a little bit of improvement there.
08:19I love the way you brush that off. He's just given away a penalty or two.
08:22Yeah, I think there's been a couple of moments where he's probably not gone in for the right
08:26tackle at the right time, that kind of thing. But I think on the ball and his confidence
08:31that he's now playing with has been brilliant because it was quite a slow start to life
08:35at Brighton for Boliva. Obviously, he was in and out of the team and wasn't getting
08:39that run of games he perhaps would have liked to really settle down. But he's really getting
08:44that now and he's starting to really show his class. Obviously, we've seen him score
08:47an absolute screamer this season against Wolves in the Caravelle Cup. It was also one of the
08:53best celebrations I've seen from a Brighton player in recent years as well. Yeah, he's
08:58been brilliant and it was a real kind of concern to see that he was stretched off in
09:02that game for Cameroon. But it does seem like it was only a minor injury, thankfully. I
09:07don't think he featured in the game against Kenya. So, potentially, he might be missing
09:15for the Newcastle game if he's not quite fit for that. But it doesn't seem as serious
09:19as first feared when obviously all the pictures came out of him on a stretcher. Obviously,
09:23fans feared the worst because for him to be out would be a huge blow, particularly after
09:27losing Billy Gilmore in the summer. Believers have come in and he's been a real vital cog
09:33in the team and it's vital that he stays fit.
09:36Former Brighton manager Graham Potter had been linked to the England role, but now that's
09:42gone to Thomas Tuchel. What do we make of that appointment and where does that leave
09:45Potter, Darren?
09:47Yeah, it's an interesting one, isn't it? Potter was rumoured to be in the frame for
09:52the England role. Whether he actually had any discussions with the FA or not, we don't
09:58know for sure. But he has been linked, along with Eddie Howe, who's obviously the Newcastle
10:05manager who Brighton will play as well this weekend. So, I imagine some Newcastle fans
10:10would be quite relieved that Eddie Howe is staying at Newcastle as well. But yeah, for
10:17Potter, where that quite leaves his career now. He's been doing the rounds recently.
10:21He's been on Monday Night Football. He's been on Match of the Day 2.
10:25Bit of a charisma vacuum, isn't he?
10:27Yeah. He's been trying to boost his profile again. Say, look, I'm still here type thing,
10:34I think. But it's been about 18 months now since he's left Chelsea. He's been out of
10:40work.
10:41Is it as long as that? Blimey.
10:43Yeah, since he came. Obviously, we've had Deserby at Brighton since then as well, and
10:50now Herzéla. So yeah, Potter's been out for quite some time. And you look at where he
10:56can go from here. He has been linked with some big jobs, like the Ajax job. He's also
11:01linked with a Nice job in France. He's been linked with a Man United role as well, which
11:07also Thomas Tuchel had been as well with the Ineos owners. And apparently he does...
11:12So Jim Ratcliffe is a fan of Potter, but whether that is a logical next step for him, if Ten
11:19Haag is to go, I don't know. I personally can't see that one at the moment, Potter at
11:25Man United, but you never know. And then you look lower down the table, the managers that
11:30are under pressure. You look at Gary O'Neill at Wolves, Russell Martin at Southampton.
11:35That feels about his level, doesn't it?
11:38Yeah, it would be... I think a big team, although Man United are sort of at a lower level at
11:45the moment, that just does seem... whether they could attract someone else other than
11:50Potter, I'm not too sure. So it'll be interesting to see where Potter goes. But as far as Tuchel
11:56is concerned, 18-month contract with the England job. And it just seems clear, doesn't it?
12:03It's a change of direction from the FA that they... It's just with the World Cup in mind,
12:08isn't it? They've come here, come for 18 months, win us that World Cup. That is his clear remit
12:13when Southgate failed just short on a few occasions as well. And they just think Tuchel
12:19could be that man to give them that extra bit of bite, extra bit of ruthlessness to
12:25really go on and win a tournament with this really talented, proper players that England
12:30have. So yeah, interesting appointment. Some have criticised it, saying that it sort of
12:36damages the pathway for English managers to become the England manager.
12:40They should be better, shouldn't they?
12:42Pardon?
12:43They should be better, shouldn't they?
12:45Yeah, well, that's the other argument, isn't it? It's slim pickings, isn't it? If you look
12:49at the English managers that you think who could potentially be there, obviously Potter
12:53was in the frame, but he really struggled at Chelsea. Eddie Howe, he would have been
12:58my pick, but he's at Newcastle, obviously. But yeah, so we'll see what Tuchel brings.
13:05But his remit is, yeah, just win us that World Cup, basically.
13:08Yeah, it's going to be an interesting one. It's going to be an interesting one. Well,
13:11we're going to take a quick break now and then we're going to talk all things Crawley
13:14and I'm going to turn into Deron. So there you go.
13:17Poor you, poor you. All right, well, welcome back after the break. Now it's my turn to
13:24quiz Mark and Sam on all things Crawley Town. Mark, it was a crazy day at the Broadfields
13:30Stadium. Talk us through what happened in their previous match.
13:35Oh, it was crazy. They played Shrewsbury Town. Shrewsbury were below them before the day
13:40started. They were both in the relegation zone and he picked a very attacking looking
13:47side. And they started well, Crawley, but then John Marquis scored for Shrewsbury and
13:54he scored from a similar position than everybody scored against Crawley this year. Some unmarked
13:59in the box, just had a free shot, scored. Not a lot true Conor Truman could have done
14:04in goal. But Crawley fought back and Will Swan got his first goal for the club. And
14:10it looked to sort of settle down a bit from then. Crawley were well on top and playing
14:13well. Got to halftime, won all. Second half just went absolutely bonkers. If anyone's
14:19seen the film The Substance, it was as bonkers as the last half hour of that. It was, first
14:24of all, Josh Flint was sent off. He got booked. And then a couple of minutes later, he just,
14:31it was a really soft foul. But the winger got the better of him, outpaced him, but he
14:37just pulled him down. And it was really soft. The player went down very easy, but it was
14:41very naive of him. And the referee had no option but to send him off. But then Crawley
14:46scored. It was like, oh, great. Junior Quinter Equiterna scored. Really good goal. Harry
14:51Forster dinked it to the back post and he was there as a half-volley home. And it looked
14:55like, oh, brilliant. Crawley are going to get on top and now just settle back. Then
14:59we're going to get on to the substitutions in a bit. But then Rob Elliott made some changes
15:05and then it just literally fell apart for Crawley. Nisiala scored from a corner just
15:12after Elliott made free changes, just before the corner was made. And then somebody gave
15:20away a penalty. I can't remember who it was that gave away the penalty. Sorry. John Marquis
15:24scored from the spot. And then Lloyd, the striker for Shrewsbury, scored two goals in
15:30the 86th and 90th minute. And it just suddenly, they were 5-2 down. And it was just like,
15:35I don't know quite know how that happened. I mean, Crawley fans will tell you exactly
15:38how it happened. But it was just absolutely bonkers. And they did look all over the place
15:44defensively towards the end of the game. Jeremy Kelly got a consolation in the end of a really
15:50good free kick. But just utter madness it was that second half. I wasn't actually at
15:55the end of the game, but I watched a live stream of it. And it was just, yeah, there
15:59was some worrying signs defensively, definitely.
16:02Yeah. And by the looks of it, fans didn't react well to the defeat, but specifically
16:08to some of Rob Elliott's decisions in the second half, Mark. What were their issues
16:13with the new manager?
16:14Yeah, well, it was the substitutions, as I sort of alluded to then. It was when they
16:19went 2-1 up, 10 men down. You think, right, brilliant. Take off, because they had Roshan
16:24Hepburn-Murphy, Junior Quaterna, and Will Swan all on the pitch, all very attack-minded
16:30players. And you would have thought, maybe take Will Swan off, maybe Hepburn-Murphy.
16:34But he took Ronan Darcy off and Junior Quaterna. And Ronan Darcy's been arguably Crawley's
16:40best player this year. And he sort of runs the show, so influential going forward in
16:46But he took him off and, yeah, kept Hepburn-Murphy and Swan, the two most attacking players,
16:51on the pitch. And you think, he's always said he wants to attack, wants to be aggressive,
16:56play exciting football. But it just seemed a little bit, and I sort of went, is that
17:01the right move? OK, trust in Rob Elliott kind of thing, like we used to trust in Scott Lindsay.
17:06And didn't quite work out. But then the biggest one was making three changes when they were
17:11just about to defend a corner. And everyone pointed out on all social media, that's a
17:16no-no. When you're defending a corner, defending a free kick in a dangerous area, you don't
17:20make changes at that point. And he made three changes and they conceded from that corner.
17:25And then that's where it all sort of went wrong. You can look at Josh Flint being a
17:30bit silly, but Rob Elliott defended him afterwards and said, yes, he was a mistake, but he hopes
17:35he learns from it. But it just seemed like the substitutions weren't the best option
17:43for Elliott to make. So, yeah, it'll be interesting. I'm going to talk to him about it tomorrow.
17:47We've got a press conference tomorrow. I'm going to ask him about how he reflects on
17:51his decisions and that. Obviously, they analyse games, give feedback to the players. I wonder
17:57if he looks back at himself and thinks, oh, maybe they were the wrong decisions. He might
18:01stick to his guns and say, that's what I thought the right thing was to do. But it's
18:05in the pudding.
18:08And with Josh Flint being sent off, Mark, I presume he'll have a suspension. What does
18:13that mean for the Crawleys' defence?
18:15Yeah, it's an interesting one because I think he gets a one-match ban for that. So he'll
18:21miss Reading this weekend away. But they've got Dion Conroy, who's been out all season
18:25with an injury. Doesn't look like he's coming back anytime soon. Joey McCain has been playing
18:29with a bit of an ankle injury. He came on as a sub on Saturday when Flint was sent off,
18:33after Flint was sent off. So you've got Toby Malarkey, who's pretty much played every second
18:39of every game. Josh Flint not available. Joey McCain, we don't know what his ankle or how
18:44his ankle is. The only other player and defender they've sort of got is, oh, we've got Charlie
18:49Barker, who's been playing really well. So it'll probably be him. But we might, first
18:54time we see Benjamin Tanimu, the Nigerian defender who they've got in the summer transfer
19:00window, right towards the end, right on that transfer deadline day. We haven't seen anything
19:04of him yet. He hasn't been in any squads, but he's been on international duty with Nigeria.
19:09So fans want to see what this man's all about, because they all thought he was a fake player
19:14at first, because it was rumoured he was signing, then he wasn't. But nobody, we've seen him
19:18at the games, but he hasn't been in any matchday squads. So it's got to be very interesting.
19:23He's playing for Nigeria, a good international side. So he must have some quality about him.
19:30So hopefully we get a chance to see him and he has an effect for them.
19:34Yeah, let's hope so. So Sam, it's not been a great start to Rob Elliott's tenure, has
19:40it? What does he need to do to turn things around and get the fans on his side?
19:47Yeah, it's been a really difficult start. Coming obviously from non-league, obviously
19:52a big jump up, a big step up for him into League One. So you always felt that it was
19:56going to be a big challenge for him. And he came in with his main task was to get his
20:01team scoring goals. And he seems to have done that. They haven't exactly struggled to score
20:07in the last two games. They've scored six goals in the last two games. But suddenly
20:13they can't seem to defend anymore. And it's like, I think you just need to find that balance
20:17now. I think it's obviously if you score six goals, I think conceding nine in the last
20:21two just says the whole story. So yeah, they need to find a balance, make sure that they
20:27keep it tight at the back whilst also able to score at the other end of the pitch, which
20:31is obviously the whole point of football, isn't it? But it's easier said than done,
20:36really. And it's a difficult one because obviously a lot of fans have already criticised him
20:42for those subs that he made. And they were perhaps, in hindsight, he probably wouldn't
20:46have done it. But he's still very new, still trying to learn what his players can do and
20:50trying to get used to the league. I think it didn't help that it was such a must-win
20:54game. He fell against a team below them in the league. Especially after going 2-1 up,
20:59you feel like you need to be smart and just try and keep hold of what you've got with
21:0210 men. And to go drastically wrong as it did from that point on, you can kind of understand
21:07the frustration and the concern from the fans about what's going to happen in the future,
21:10really. Because going into the game, Shrewsbury were really struggling, as well as Crawley.
21:14Of the poor-performing teams in the leagues, you really looked at it as a game that Crawley
21:18needed to come out on top of. And to lose in the way they did and to concede the goals
21:22in the way they did, you can completely understand the concern from the fans. It is getting a
21:27bit worrying, but hopefully he can quickly learn from those mistakes and he can make
21:31sure he gets those subs right in the future. And make sure you hold on to those leads when
21:36you get them, especially when you're down to those 10 men and up against it.
21:40Fingers crossed he can turn it around. Now we move on to Steve Bohm's prediction corner.
21:47We'll start with you, Henry. Obviously, Brighton make the long trip up to Newcastle this Saturday.
21:54How do you think that one's going to play out?
21:57Well, Darren, I do think that Brighton will win it. I do think it will be 2-1. I think
22:03that the confidence that we've been able to get from that Tottenham game when it looked
22:08like we were down and out at half-time and able to pick up the pieces. Obviously, Spurs
22:14had an awful second half, but the Brighton momentum I think will be too much. Newcastle,
22:21Alexander Isak should be back for this one, but I think that he's going to struggle to
22:27get his form up. I think they can't just rely on Anthony Gordon. Yeah, 2-1.
22:33I'm not quite as hopeful. I think Brighton, they just look a bit dodgy defensively at
22:39the moment. I think I'm going to go for a 2-2, I think. 2-2. How do you think, Mark?
22:46Do you think that's...
22:48No, I'm going... They've got a chance, but I think Newcastle will win it because they're
22:53at home. I'm going to go 3-2. I think they'll be goals, definitely, but I'm going 3-2 Newcastle.
22:583-2 Newcastle. Sam, can you see Brighton getting three points there?
23:03I agree with you, Darren. I think it'll be a draw. I'll go for 1-1. It'll be a bit different.
23:08I'll go 1-1 draw at this one. I think Newcastle haven't had the best start to the season.
23:12Isak has not been firing when he's been playing, but I still think the best team to come from
23:16here, Anthony Gordon, is obviously... We're looking to make amends for that penalty miss
23:20against Everton. I feel like 1-1 draw, which won't be a bad result. Went off to Newcastle
23:25last season. The atmosphere there was brilliant. Some of the best fans in the league, absolutely.
23:30A really difficult place to go. I think 1-1 draw wouldn't be a bad result.
23:351-1 draw, fair enough. Two big games for Crawley coming up this week, starting with the Saturday
23:41afternoon kick-off against Reading. What are your thoughts there, Mark, the travel away
23:46to Reading?
23:47Yes, it's going to be tough, isn't it? A big stadium to go to. Confidence is bound to be
23:52a bit low after last week's capitulation. We're unsure what the defence is going to
23:57be. If they get anything from this game, I think they'll be absolutely delighted, but
24:06I'm probably going to go for a 2-1 Reading win.
24:092-1 Reading win. Sam, do you think it's going to be tough for Crawley?
24:16Yes, it's going to be really tough. Reading will probably come into the game on a bit
24:21of a low as well. They squandered a one-goal lead against Rotherham to eventually lose
24:26the game 2-1. Reading aren't exactly doing too well themselves in the league at the moment,
24:30so they'll be looking to pick up some points at home. It's a really big club. A tough game.
24:36I'll go a little bit more optimistic and say 2-2 draw.
24:412-2 draw, yes. It's hard to beat Reading, a Premier League club not so long back, were
24:47struggling in League 1. Henry, do you think Crawley have got a chance there?
24:53No. I mean, Reading, as you say, former Premier League club not so long ago. 17th position.
25:06They're probably not happy with the position they're in at the moment. I think they have
25:11to win this and I think anything less at home for a club like Reading would be a big
25:17disappointment. I think Crawley might make an account of themselves, though. I think
25:21it'll be 2-1. I think they'll be able to give a good performance, but I don't think they
25:26will get over the line.
25:28I'm going to go for a 2-0 for Crawley. I think they're going to bounce back.
25:32Go on, Darren!
25:35And then a big one for Crawley, really, in midweek against Lincoln on Tuesday night.
25:41Mark, what do you think about that?
25:43It's all going to click for Crawley that night. They're going to win 4-1.
25:474-1, Sam. Do you share that optimism?
25:51No, I can't see that. Lincoln are in fourth in the league at the moment. They're one win
25:56away from going into second place above Wrexham, who are obviously doing well in themselves.
26:06I think that just shows how well Lincoln are doing. I think Crawley will probably just
26:10lose out on that 1-2-1.
26:12Henry, can you get Lincoln, like Sam says, going well? Do you think they'll get anything
26:16from there?
