00:39Community members in flood-hit areas are coming together to scoop out water and construct
00:44dikes in response to rising water levels, OCHA stated in a tweet.
00:49AFP had on March 2023 reported that for the last four years, unprecedented flooding linked
00:56to climate change has turned almost two-thirds of South Sudan into swampland.
01:01The environmental catastrophe is most apparent in the city of Mentiu, in the northern part
01:07of the country.
01:08Local media stated, The persistent flooding in Unity State, South Sudan, has led to severe
01:15deforestation, with trees wilting after prolonged exposure to water, becoming firewood rather
01:21than thriving ecosystems.
01:24Rotas in August 28, 2024 published a photograph of a survivor who climbed a wall with assistance
01:31following devastating floods in South Toka, Rensi State, Sudan.
01:36Close watchers have said, Floods and highway attacks across South Sudan in September 2024
01:43worsened humanitarian access as 15 major supply routes were rendered impossible, impacting
01:49the delivery of essential humanitarian supplies to some 500,000 people.
01:54There are concerns that there may be new health crises in the Unity State, South Sudan, as
02:00flood victims remain trapped after two weeks of heavy flooding and with rising water levels.
02:05There may be an increased risk of waterborne diseases, exacerbating the plight of affected
02:11communities who struggle for access to clean water and medical care.
02:16AFP reporting the recent observations from OCHA, stated that, Some 893,000 people have
02:24been affected by flooding in South Sudan and more than 241,000 displaced, the U.S. humanitarian
02:31agency OCHA said Thursday in a grim update on the disaster.
02:36Aid agencies have warned that the world's youngest country, highly vulnerable to climate
02:41change, is facing its worst flooding in decades.
02:45Flooding continues to affect and displace people across the country, the United Nations
02:50Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said in a statement.
02:56Heavy rainfall and floods have rendered 15 main supply routes impossible, restricting
03:01physical access.
03:02OCHA said about 893,000 people were flood affected in 42 of South Sudan's 78 counties
03:10as well as the Abai Administrative Area, a disputed zone claimed by both Juma and Katu.
03:17It said unity and war-up states in the north of the country accounted for more than 40
03:22percent of the affected population.
03:25More than 241,000 people were displaced in 16 counties and the Abai area, seeking shelter
03:33on higher ground, OCHA added.
03:36Since gaining independence from Sudan in 2011, the world's youngest nation has remained
03:41plagued by chronic instability, violence and economic stagnation as well as climate disasters
03:47such as drought and floods.
03:50The World Bank said in an October 1 update that the latest floods were, worsening an
03:55already critical humanitarian situation marked by severe food insecurity, economic decline,
04:02continued conflict, disease outbreaks and the repercussions of the Sudan conflict.
04:08The conflict in Sudan has seen more than 797,000 refugees pour into South Sudan as of September,
04:16the World Bank said, almost 80 percent of them South Sudanese returnees.
04:21The country also faces another period of political paralysis after the presidency announced yet
04:27another extension to.
04:29A transitional period agreed in the 2018 peace deal, delaying elections due to take place
04:35in December by another two years.
04:38Key provisions of the transitional agreement remain unfulfilled, including the creation
04:43of a constitution and the unification of the rival forces of President Salva Ki and his
04:48foe Riek Maka.
04:50The delays have exasperated South Sudan's partners and the United Nations.

05:17in February when an export pipeline was damaged in war-torn Sudan.
05:22Meanwhile, National Catholic reporter said Inyawal is among 750,000 South Sudanese threatened
05:29by the floods and at risk of starvation among a population of more than 12.7 million people,
05:36of whom about 61 percent identify as Christian.
05:40It would be recalled that in 2020, South Sudan declared a three-month state of emergency
05:46as the country was declared a disaster zone due to floods that have affected over 500,000
05:52people, killed many, and destroyed 100,000 homes.
05:57Also, in 2021, large parts of South Sudan were flooded over a year and a half.
