Michael Jordan jersey to fetch $4-6M in New York City auction

Michael Jordan’s game-worn red jersey from the 1996-1997 basketball championship season with the Chicago Bulls is going on the Sotheby’s chopping block on Oct. 23, 2024 in New York as part of the 'Colossal - The Ultimate Jordan Collection' auction. In addition to the red jersey, Sotheby's is also auctioning five other Michael Jordan 'relics,' including two white Chicago Bulls jerseys, a flag that the player wore when he received his gold medal in the 1992 Olympics, and a warm-up top and sneakers from his days at the University of North Carolina.

00:00So I'm standing in front of Colossal, which is a Michael Jordan jersey from the 96, 97
00:19NBA season.
00:21It's one of the most extensively worn Michael Jordan jerseys ever to come to market.
00:26It was worn sort of during the peak of Michael Jordan's power, so worn right after the movie
00:34Space Jam came out, so he was at the peak of his fame.
00:38And it was worn for five months, so nothing like this has ever come to market.
00:43It's the only jersey from his first five championships in red that has ever come to auction.
00:50So it's a very special jersey.
00:52We like to call it a unicorn, and its estimate is $4 to $6 million.
01:13He was at the peak of his fame, and this was really one of the most popular items of clothing
01:18in the entire world at the time.
01:20You can see children walking around with the red Michael Jordan jersey, the championship
01:26logo, and it was from the 50th anniversary season, so you can see on the jersey that
01:31there is a gold emblem on it, which is one of the only instances of this happening ever
01:38with NBA jerseys.
01:39So it's a very special jersey.
01:42It's one of a kind, and it's estimated to go for $4 to $6 million at the end of the month.
01:50This is also an incredibly rare artifact, so no red jersey from the first five championship
02:13seasons of Michael Jordan has ever come to market.
02:17So it's an incredibly rare piece, and it's also been extensively used, which collectors
02:25love.
02:26So it was used for 17 games.
02:28After the season, Michael Jordan usually switched jerseys every single game, so this is sort
02:33of one of the last of its kind in that he used this for five months, so it was essentially
02:39half of the season, which is also an incredibly rare characteristic for a jersey like this.
03:09So, we see people from all over the collector community, so there's obviously huge basketball
03:24fans who understand the historic significance of a jersey like this, but there's also people
03:31who grew up in the 90s and have a certain nostalgia for pieces like this, and as I said,
03:37it's a sports artifact as much as it's a pop culture artifact, so people who understand
03:43Michael Jordan's significance within pop culture will certainly be bidding on this.
04:37It also features four other items, including two Michael Jordan jerseys, so one from the
04:431998 Last Dance playoffs, game one of those playoffs, as well as a jersey worn extensively
04:52throughout the 88-89 season.
04:55Those are both white Chicago Bulls jerseys, incredibly rare.
05:00We also have the flag that Michael wore when he was receiving his gold medal in the 1992
05:07Olympics when he was part of the Dream Team.
05:10He famously covered up the Reebok logo with the flag during that ceremony because he was
05:17a Nike athlete and very loyal to Nike.
05:20And then lastly, we have a warm-up top and sneakers that he wore during his time in college
05:27at the University of North Carolina.
05:30So those are the five, sorry, those are the four other lots that we have in the sale.
05:37They're all incredibly rare artifacts from throughout Michael Jordan's career.
