A contractor and his nephew were charged at the Magistrate’s Court in Jitra on Thursday (Oct 17) with the murder of Felcra retiree Sabari Baharom last month.

Mazuan Hanafi, 38, and Muhd Asyraf Idris, 26, nodded in understanding when the charge was read out before Magistrate Nurul Huda Idris.

00:28The duo were charged together with causing the death of 62-year-old Sabari on a bridge
00:34in Kampung Empah, Kubang Pasu, at about 5.30 a.m. on September 4.
00:40They were charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries the death penalty
00:45or a maximum of 40 years' imprisonment and a minimum of 12 strokes of the cane.
00:51The court set January 5 next year for next mention.
00:54Previously, media reports stated that Sabari, who lived alone in Kampung Mengkuang Tengah
00:59in Kuala Pegang, Baling, went missing on September 4.
01:03His car was found burnt in Belantik Sik on September 20.
01:07Police later confirmed that the retiree had been thrown into Sunggai Padang Terap near
01:13Kampung Empah with his hands tied and mouth taped, following the arrest of the two men.
01:19The search operation for Sabari in the river area was conducted over three days to no avail
01:26and concluded on October 3.
01:30Sabari's daughter Suraya Izati, when met at the court complex, expressed hope that
01:34her father's body would be found soon to ease the trial process.
01:38She said she would definitely attend and follow the trial until justice is served.
