After Undekhi, Apeksha Porwal has made her place in the hearts of people with 'Honeymoon Photographer'. Apeksha won the title of Miss India in 2017. 00:00So, the character that I play in Honeymoon Photographer is called Zoya Irani and it's
00:08very different from anything I've done before. So, for me that's the most important part
00:15when I'm choosing character that it has to be versatile, it has to be something that
00:19I have not explored and honestly Zoya from Honeymoon Photographer is one of the first
00:25times I'm playing a character which is so grey. You know, she's not right or wrong,
00:32she's got her own way of doing things and it's a very grey character. So, I think that
00:36for me was the most exciting part of playing Zoya.
00:43Well, the shoot was a blast. I think all of us became such good friends. So, all of the
00:50characters like Rajiv, Asha, Sahil, Arjun and me, we've had a blast shooting in Thailand.
00:58One of our schedules was in Thailand and we've had a blast in those days and honestly because
01:04of the way the script was and there's so much, you know, it was just a blast to shoot on
01:10set because a lot of our scenes were, you know, there's running around, there's things
01:14that we're doing in the ocean, we're like swimming in the ocean and you know, there's
01:19just a bunch of things which was so fun and exciting to shoot.
01:27So, my first character, Koyal, was a very important choice for me because right before
01:33that I had done Miss India. So, the kind of roles that I was getting were very like, you
01:36know, putting me into a certain bracket. So, and I also think I'm very grateful that I
01:42got a role like Koyal which she's a tribal girl, she's on the run, completely no glam
01:48and you know, just very focused on the role and on the script. To break that image of
01:56just this Miss India girl. Then I played the role of Lavani in Slave Market where she's
02:03an Indian princess who gets kidnapped and sold into sex slavery and that was an international
02:09show, it was an Arabic series. So, that again was, you know, it's a period drama, again
02:14very versatile, very different kind of a look. And then there's Zoya. So, for me, I
02:19just like to keep picking roles that push me and challenge me as an actor where I can
02:25explore different looks and that's how I want to keep going as well.
02:33So, you know, this is what I said even while I was shooting Pardes, that is the kind of
02:37a song that would be in my playlist anyway. So, you know, we get music videos which are
02:43good, very good but maybe we don't listen to it. But this is the kind of a song that I
02:48keep in my playlist anyway. And Pardes is again, it's an old-school romantic kind of a music
02:57video, old love, a time before phones and you know, maybe it was the era of letters.
03:05So, it's the kind of love that I like to portray on screen and like I always say, I can
03:13keep on doing period roles and period drama and anything old-school. So, that's what Pardes was as well.
03:24So, I always say that Miss India and acting are two very different things. But I think the
03:33thing that Miss India did for me was it gave me a certain confidence. It allowed me to be on a
03:40stage, to make a fool of myself in front of people, to win in front of people, lose in front
03:44of people. And I think that is a very important characteristic to have in life anyway. Having
03:51said that, Miss India and acting are two very different things. So, that I was very clear about
03:56which is why I did my acting training. I did theatre. I went to acting school after Miss India
04:02because it's a whole different craft. So, I think Miss India is something that helps you in life
04:09to take up challenges and to overcome your fears. And yeah, I think that is the aspect that did help me.
04:21No, I feel like the time has changed now completely. There was probably a time years
04:27ago when it was the case. But today I think there is a role for everybody. The roles that I have
04:36done so far have not been on the basis of she's dusky or fair or whatever. I do think certain
04:44roles have a certain requirement. For example, if you want a Punjabi girl, she will look like that.
04:49Or if you want a Bengali girl, she will look like that. But I don't see the correlation of skin colour and beauty
04:59and as far as I'm concerned, I haven't seen such a bias because I think I came also at a time
05:08when that bias had gone. I came at a time when you know something like an HUL had done away with
05:14fair and lovely and gotten into a different thing. Being a Miss India who's a dusky Miss India,
05:21cracking a role like Koel which is a dusky girl. Even you know even Lavani in the Arabic series,
05:26I'm the Indian lead and I'm a dusky girl. So I don't find that bias there anymore.
