00:00Samsung just had their event, where they launched a lot of new hardware, so they have two new phones, the Z Flip 6 and the Z Fold 6,
00:07and they also have new earbuds, they have the new Galaxy Buds 3 Pro, and they also have new watches, including the all new Galaxy Watch Ultra.
00:15Now, despite all this impressive new hardware, they spent a lot of time talking about AI features that were just not really impressive.
00:25OK, let's start off with the hardware first.
00:27So, the Galaxy Z Flip 6 comes in four colors, we have the blue, a mint, yellow and silver shadow.
00:34The silver shadow color is still an aluminum device, but it has that kind of titanium look.
00:39Now, there's three main hardware updates of the previous generation.
00:42First, it now has 12 gigs of RAM instead of 8, even the base model has 12 gigs of RAM now on the Flip 6.
00:48Secondly, we have a bigger battery, it's 4000 mAh now.
00:51Thirdly, the main camera now uses a 50 megapixel sensor.
00:54The ultrawide still uses the same sensor as the previous generation.
00:58Now, the screen sizes on the Flip remain unchanged, both the inside screen and the outside screen are the same as before,
01:04and also the weight remains unchanged, and the dimensions are also very similar.
01:08For all intents and purposes, it's the same dimensions.
01:11It's a little bit thinner than the previous model, but it was imperceptible when I was holding it in my hands.
01:17Aesthetically, there aren't a lot of changes on the Flip 6.
01:20Now, the Fold is a different story.
01:22The Galaxy Z Fold 6 has three new colors, so we got the silver shadow again, pink, and navy,
01:28but this is a different dimensioned product.
01:30It's thinner and lighter this year, and it's also a little bit shorter but wider,
01:34and because of these changes, we now have new screens.
01:37So, we have different aspect ratios on these screens even.
01:39So, the front screen is a little bit bigger at 6.3 inches, it's a little wider,
01:44and the main screen on the inside still measures up as a 7.6 inch screen,
01:48but it's also a slightly different aspect ratio than the previous generation.
01:51Also, a little bit wider, and you can tell.
01:54Like, I didn't have any of the specs or information in front of me when I was first looking at them,
01:57and I just felt like these were wider screens than the previous generation.
02:01The camera system appears to be running the same hardware,
02:03so it's still got the 50 megapixel GN3 as the main shooter,
02:06but it is contained in a different kind of camera bump.
02:10So, each lens now has a series of these concentric rings,
02:14and I think they look nice, but those rings were weirdly sharp.
02:17Like, if I rubbed them with my fingertips, my skin cells would appear on those rings.
02:21It still has 12 gigs of RAM and the same battery size,
02:24so it still has a 4400 mAh battery.
02:26It's just like a more refined version of what they had going on,
02:29but both the Flip 6 and the Fold 6 are running the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip,
02:34which is obviously better performance, mostly noticeable in the GPU,
02:37so if you're someone that's chasing performance, there is a bit of a bump.
02:40Okay, next up is what I think is the most interesting piece of hardware they showed.
02:44It's the Galaxy Buds 3 and the 3 Pro.
02:46So, since 2016, Samsung's wireless earbuds have all shared the same kind of design language.
02:52They have these compact buds that have no stems,
02:55and they just look nothing like Apple's AirPods.
02:57Even the cases are unlike Apple's AirPods.
02:59They normally have these, like, square cases or maybe pill-shaped cases.
03:02It's, like, uniquely and iconically a Samsung design.
03:06Even on their website, they had, like, articles talking about how,
03:09you know, the design language and how they chose it over the years
03:11and why they go with a stemless design.
03:13So you can imagine my surprise when they revealed the new Galaxy Buds 3 and the Buds 3 Pro,
03:17and these things had stems, and they also just looked very Apple-esque to me.
03:22Now, in my short time using them, I will say that controlling these with the stems
03:27and squeezing them is more precise than just, like, tapping the sides of the previous buds.
03:32I've always found those a little bit harder to control,
03:34but it's strange to me that they took such an iconic design and just replaced it overnight.
03:38Now, the Buds 3 Pro, and only the Pro models,
03:41has a light strip that lights up when there's, like, 30% battery or more,
03:45and you can control the lighting a little bit in software.
03:47There's also color-coded markings, like blue and orange, for left and right,
03:51and it does make it easier to put them into the case correctly.
03:54I do want to add, they sounded really good.
03:57I wasn't able to measure them, obviously, at an event like that,
03:59but switching back and forth between the Apple AirPods Pro 2 and the Galaxy Buds Pro 3,
04:06and just between the two, again, a short listening test,
04:08but I definitely prefer the Galaxy Buds.
04:10They just sounded better.
04:12Okay, the last piece of hardware, their watches.
04:15So, they have the new Galaxy Watch 7,
04:17but the new star of their smartwatch lineup is the Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra,
04:22and like the Apple Watch Ultra, it's built to be more rugged,
04:25it has a longer battery, and it's made out of titanium.
04:28So, I'm not surprised that Samsung made an Ultra watch,
04:31but I am surprised that it's got a more squarish shape,
04:35like the whole Samsung Galaxy Watch lineup has always just been round watches,
04:39so this is, it's just, again, deviance from their regular design,
04:43but I do love the look of the Ultra, especially the white-colored one,
04:47like that thing looks so nice in real life.
04:49The white strap with the white on the casing, god damn, it's sick.
04:53There is a quick button on the side, it's got like orange color accents.
04:57Now, in my short testing with it,
04:59the only thing that that button could do on the unit that I was testing
05:02was that it would just launch workouts,
05:04but I'm assuming in software you can adjust it.
05:06The bezel doesn't rotate, it just has markings that might trick you into thinking that it does,
05:11and the watch face that I saw on it had a very technical vibe to it,
05:14I thought it looked really nice.
05:15It is water-resistant to about 100 meters,
05:17and it works at a wide range of temperatures and at high altitudes,
05:21and it has a siren that you can activate in emergencies.
05:23Now, the strap is a very soft rubber strap,
05:26it's a very similar-looking strap to the stock Apple Watch Ultra strap,
05:30which is actually seemingly built for divers,
05:32but the Galaxy Watch Ultra is not a dive watch in the sense that,
05:37like, I don't even think it has a depth gauge,
05:38which, at least from my understanding, like the spec sheet that I looked at,
05:42and when I asked to Samsung, like, does it have a depth meter,
05:45they said it didn't, which is surprising to me.
05:48Like, I feel like on a watch called the Ultra,
05:51with the ability to go to 100 meters deep,
05:54I mean, why is there no depth sensor?
05:58Not that everyone's diving, but, like, I don't know,
06:00that just feels like something they could and should have put on it.
06:03Okay, so that's the hardware, and it's really cool stuff,
06:07but I want to move over the conversation to the AI software
06:10because I feel like Samsung spent a lot of time talking about AI stuff, okay?
06:15So I'm going to rewind a little bit.
06:17In January of this year, so 2024 January,
06:20when they launched the S24 products,
06:22Samsung kind of officially launched Galaxy AI,
06:26and this product stack was cool.
06:28They had some AI photo editing tools like Generative Fill,
06:31they had some live translation tools that actually worked really well
06:34with the new Flip because it's got that pop-up screen,
06:37and you also can summarize big walls of text into point form notes,
06:40and there were other tools, but I think most users would agree
06:43that as fun as these features were to play with
06:45and as cool as they might seem on paper,
06:47none of it was, like, a must-have feature for 2024.
06:51It was all just neat.
06:53So when Samsung, at this event, was like,
06:55hey, we got some new features, there was a part of me that was doubtful.
06:58So the big one they showed was their new sketch-to-image,
07:00where you can crudely draw something on the screen
07:03and Galaxy AI would generate an image for you.
07:06Now, I tried it a few times, and I think the idea is cool,
07:09it's fun to play with for a bit, but for one, it's really slow.
07:13Like, the wait time is heavy, and then the results are just not great.
07:17Like, I drew a ninja turtle and got a few variants that were comical.
07:20Like, I get that the results will get better in time as the model gets better,
07:24but it just feels like this type of stuff is not useful for most people.
07:28Now, there is another thing they showcased,
07:30where they had AI tools in notes that could assist your writing.
07:33Like, you can use it to check your spelling and grammar,
07:36or you can use it to change your writing style.
07:38Like, you can write a poorly crafted message,
07:40and then the AI will give you a few options to make that message more professional or more polite.
07:44Like, this is all stuff we've seen before on other platforms,
07:47and it's good that Samsung's bringing it to their users.
07:49But they also had this, like, generative AI storytelling tool,
07:53where you could prompt it with a little bit of guidance,
07:55and then it would write a full story for you.
07:57Like, the idea of it is interesting, I guess, but it's more like a tech demo, right?
08:00You look at it, and you're like, hey, that's kind of neat.
08:02But very few people would actually use most of these tools.
08:06I think, like, the grammar and spelling, sure, but come on, man.
08:08Like, I look at that stuff, and I'm like, what?
08:10Why is this the headlining AI feature that they're showing right now?
08:13Especially when you have stuff like Apple Intelligence on the horizon,
08:16where Apple wants to be able to access your emails, and your calendars,
08:19and your contacts, and your messages,
08:21and be able to just derive context out of all that stuff to deliver a digital assistant.
08:25Like, that AI product that they are claiming to be able to deliver is really cool.
08:30It's super ambitious. Who knows if they'll actually be able to deliver it.
08:33But that, when people see that Apple Intelligence product,
08:36it seems like there's real utility there.
08:38The Samsung Galaxy AI stack, it just feels like so broken up into pieces.
08:44And I can't foresee how all of it ties together for Samsung.
08:48Now, I do imagine that they must be working on something that's, like, a bigger picture thing.
08:52They have to, right? Especially because of the competition.
08:55But right now, after this event, I look at it, and I'm like, I can't envision it yet.
09:01I still can't.
09:02But there you have it. Awesome hardware, as always, from Samsung.
09:05But what do you think? Is the software that cool?
