00:00All right, so in front of me are a bunch of iPhone things.
00:04On this side we have some of the iPhone 12 family,
00:06but then on this side, we have four of these iPhone models
00:11that are supposed to represent the upcoming iPhones,
00:14either the iPhone 13 or 12S, whatever they end up calling it.
00:17And when I got these devices in,
00:19my first reaction was, they're cool, right?
00:21There's some aesthetic differences between the upcoming stuff
00:24compared to last year's model,
00:25but I didn't want to do a dedicated video on it.
00:27Because the visual differences, as interesting as they are,
00:31they're relatively mild, right?
00:33But then I saw this report on Bloomberg.
00:36Mark Gurman, very reputable Apple leaker,
00:39he's stating that Apple's requesting 90 million units
00:44of the iPhone 13 to be made.
00:47That's a very significant bump up from their regular request.
00:50So normally they go for about 75 million,
00:52which is a lot of iPhones already,
00:54but they are confident.
00:56They have the intrinsic belief
00:59that they're going to sell a lot more of these new iPhones
01:03than they have in the past.
01:05Now, there's a couple of theories as to why this is happening, right?
01:09So I've seen theories of like, you know,
01:11the post-pandemic time period,
01:12maybe people want to buy stuff, right?
01:14So the retail therapy of buying a new iPhone,
01:16or maybe the whole idea of like the second generation
01:19of a 5G device from Apple.
01:21People might want that.
01:22But when I look at the rumored spec list of these new phones,
01:25the one feature that jumps out to me is the 120 hertz display
01:28on the iPhone 13 Pro and the iPhone 13 Pro Max.
01:31So these are rumored to have these 120 hertz OLED panels
01:34with LTPO tech.
01:35It's pretty interesting stuff,
01:37but what makes it special,
01:39what makes it really special,
01:41is that people that are in this ecosystem,
01:44like the people that are deeply entrenched in the Apple ecosystem,
01:47which is a lot of people,
01:48they've never seen a high refresh screen on a phone before.
01:52A lot of them, right?
01:53Obviously, if you're watching this video,
01:55even if you're an iPhone user,
01:56you're a tech enthusiast.
01:57You've at least heard of a high refresh screen.
01:59Maybe you've had the privilege of seeing one,
02:00maybe even own one.
02:01If you're an Android user,
02:02there's a reasonable chance that you have a high refresh screen
02:04on your phone,
02:05because they've been around for years.
02:06Or if you're, I don't know, a gamer, a PC gamer,
02:08you've seen high refresh screens.
02:10But there's a huge, huge difference
02:12between a high refresh screen and a low refresh screen.
02:16But there's a huge, huge chunk of the Apple ecosystem users
02:21that have never seen that before, ever.
02:23They may not have even heard of it before.
02:25And when they see this in a store,
02:27when they see a high refresh screen in a store,
02:32it's a whole new experience.
02:34Like, think of phones
02:37and the way that Apple tries to market things
02:40and try to sell you a new product every year.
02:43It's hard.
02:44They have a crack marketing team.
02:45They're amazing at it.
02:46But even then,
02:47it is a really difficult job to sell you a new iPhone,
02:50because the differences between the old one and the new one,
02:54every year, they're subtle.
02:56You have to sell it, right?
02:58It's got this feature.
02:59It's faster.
03:00It's got this new color, this new design.
03:02There's a whole bunch of things
03:03that make new iPhones better to the perceived market,
03:07but it's not super, super obvious.
03:10What is obvious is a screen.
03:12You see a high refresh screen for the first time,
03:14it's like, whoa, that's new.
03:18That is a fast phone.
03:19That is something that my old phone didn't do, couldn't do.
03:22That's a better phone.
03:24Now, I still remember the first time
03:25I saw a high refresh panel on a smartphone.
03:28It was a Razer phone in 2017, I think.
03:31Yeah, 2017.
03:33And it was so weird to see something so fast,
03:36so fluid, so responsive in a smartphone.
03:38And this is coming from someone
03:39that had access to gaming desktops, right?
03:41I'd played on high refresh screens
03:43or higher refresh screens,
03:45but to go from a 60 hertz phone to a 90 hertz phone
03:48back in 2017 was quite the experience.
03:51And now, Apple users,
03:54of which I think a large chunk
03:55have never seen this type of tech before,
03:57they're going to go from 60 hertz to 120 hertz overnight.
04:01And they're going to see it in a store
04:02or maybe they pick up the device
04:04and it's going to be a very compelling reason
04:06for them to be interested in this phone.
04:08And the other thing, even if they've seen the iPads,
04:10like the, you know, the ProMotion iPads,
04:12120 hertz displays, those are IPS panels.
04:15There's ghosting on that stuff, right?
04:17OLED panel, 0 millisecond response time.
04:20It's a whole new experience.
04:22And I think that is the reason
04:24why Apple is pushing those bigger numbers.
04:27Because people are going to be interested in this thing
04:29in a way that they haven't ever been
04:31for years when it came to a new iPhone.
04:33Now, some other new features include
04:35a smaller notch on the front,
04:37so the front screen has a slightly smaller notch
04:39and an earpiece that supposedly moved up
04:42just above its original position.
04:44And the whole kind of camera system for Face ID
04:47is shrunken down to fit into that smaller space.
04:50And the battery is supposed to be a little bit bigger,
04:52I'm assuming to support that high refresh screen.
04:54Even with LTPO tech, it's going to draw more juice.
04:57And the device is supposed to be slightly thicker
04:59than the previous models of the iPhone 12.
05:01But the biggest difference is the camera system,
05:06at least from the visuals.
05:07So, just starting off with the regular...
05:10Let's look at these.
05:11So this is the iPhone 12, the iPhone 12 mini.
05:14And they're still making, apparently, an iPhone 13 mini.
05:18If you look at the camera array of the upcoming iPhone,
05:20you can see the diagonal layout of the cameras
05:23as opposed to the vertical layout from the previous generation.
05:26And it's supposedly to make room for some bigger components.
05:29So, apparently, they're bringing in that sensor shift technology
05:32over from the iPhone 12 Pro Max,
05:34like that ability to move the sensor around,
05:37not just the lenses, but the actual sensor,
05:39to deal with their version of optical image stabilization.
05:43It's a more improved, more efficient manner of it.
05:46And they're bringing that across the line.
05:47And I think that's supposedly the reason
05:49why they're having this kind of diagonal camera orientation.
05:54But the big one to me is this chonky camera system
05:59on the iPhone 13 Pro and the iPhone 13 Pro Max.
06:03These are big.
06:04If you compare them to the previous iPhone 12 Pro Max,
06:09this already had a large camera system.
06:11I'm just going to clear these out of the way.
06:14This was a big camera system.
06:16I looked at this and I was like, that's big.
06:19You compare it to, well, let's compare it to this.
06:23The supposed iPhone 13 Pro Max,
06:26that is a huge difference in camera cluster.
06:30And even more interestingly is that the iPhone 13 Pro,
06:33like the regular size iPhone 13 Pro,
06:35it has the exact same cluster size as the Pro Max,
06:39which is unlike what we saw last year.
06:41So if you looked at the 12 Pro Max to the 12 Pro,
06:44the 12 Pro had a smaller camera cluster.
06:47But this year, supposedly they're rocking the same size.
06:50And this is what has been kind of confirmed
06:52by case manufacturers.
06:53They're saying that they're the same kind of camera cutout.
06:56Now, last year when I did my iPhone 12 family of reviews,
07:01one of the things that I was stating,
07:03I think this was a sentiment felt by a lot of reviewers,
07:05is that the difference between the 12 and the 12 Pro wasn't massive.
07:11Like there was a lot of stuff that was so good about the 12
07:14that it made it quite difficult for people to recommend a 12 Pro
07:17unless you really cared about having a zoom lens on your phone.
07:20Because that third lens, that zoom lens,
07:22was really the biggest difference between the iPhone 12 and the iPhone 12 Pro.
07:25But this year, in the iPhone 13 series,
07:28it looks like there's going to be a big difference
07:30between the Pro and the non-Pro phones.
07:33Like we're talking the fast refresh screen,
07:36we're talking a completely different camera system
07:38between the 13 and the 13 Pro.
07:41It seems like if they're charging Pro money on this,
07:44you can be darn sure that they will.
07:46But I think there will be more differences between them
07:49just to segregate the pleb line and the Pro line.
07:54But yeah, so this is what we have to look forward to.
08:00A new phone from Apple.
08:02Of course it's going to be a new phone from Apple.
08:04But yeah, I just wanted to share this with you.
08:07I just had some thoughts on this.
08:09And my question is, what do you think?
08:11You see that number, 75 million units normally,
08:14and they're bumping it up to 90 million.
08:17What's your guess as to why?
08:18Because there's got to be a reason.
08:20It can't just be like, we hope we're going to sell them,
08:22so we'll just make them.
08:23No, they really believe they're going to sell them.
08:26Is that the thing?
08:27Is the screen the reason you think that's going to take it off?
08:30All right.
08:31That's it.
08:32Hope you guys enjoyed this video.
08:33Thumbs if you liked it, subs if you loved it.
08:34I'll see you guys next time.
