00:00Hey, how's it going? Dave2D here. So Asus just announced a whole bunch of new gaming hardware.
00:07They have a whole bunch of laptops, but the two laptops of interest to me are these right here.
00:12This is the ROG Mothership, and this is the ROG Zephyrus.
00:15So the Mothership is the completely brand new design, brand new just concept for what portable computing, portable gaming can be.
00:24This is a device that is... I just... You know what? Words don't describe this thing properly.
00:29You just have to see how this thing works. Instead of a traditional clamshell, right?
00:33So that's how normal laptops work. You open it up at the front, it's got a screen, keyboard, it's like your regular stuff.
00:38This opens in a completely bonkers way. It's almost like an all-in-one.
00:42You lift it up, you put it forward, and a kickstand appears, and then the keyboard detaches.
00:50Now this keyboard can be used wirelessly or wired. If it's wireless, it uses 2.4 GHz radio frequency.
00:55If it's wired, it's a regular USB-C connection.
00:58So the Keystroke has a lot of travel. It's 2.4 millimeters.
01:01It doesn't feel like a regular mechanical keyboard or anything like that.
01:04It's still distinctly a laptop-type keyboard, but it's a very tactile keyboard.
01:09And it also has the trackpad on the right, which we've seen on Zephyrus devices.
01:12I don't love the position of trackpads on the right, but the way they've designed this thing is it kind of required it.
01:18Now the purpose of this, the purpose of separating the keyboard in this kind of bizarre all-in-one style look to this portable device is for thermals.
01:27So this thing has the motherboard, the CPU, the GPU, and all the components on the back of the screen.
01:32And by positioning it there, they're able to vent out the heat directly at the top and the sides of the device,
01:37and they're drawing in cool air from behind the screen.
01:39So you get this very impressive thermal solution.
01:42So this thing is running a GTX 2080, and that's like the full-fat, like, not Max-Q version.
01:47It's the most powerful GPU that I've seen from NVIDIA this year, and it's running on a 17-inch 144Hz screen that's G-Sync enabled.
01:53Now a product like the ROG Mothership is obviously not for everyone, right?
01:57Not even most gamers are going to want something like this.
01:59It's going to be super expensive, I don't know exact pricing at this point in time,
02:02but looking at this engineering sample, it looks really well-built.
02:05Now I can't run benchmarks on either of these units, NVIDIA won't let me at the time of filming,
02:10but the Mothership is supposed to rival the performance of most gaming desktops out there.
02:14It's not super portable, it's roughly 10 pounds, it's definitely heavier than most gaming laptops out there,
02:20but it's incredibly powerful, and it's portable.
02:23Like, it's, like, you can obviously carry this thing around if you want to.
02:26It's well-built, looks good, and that's the ROG Mothership.
02:30The other device here, the Zephyrus S, is the GX701.
02:34So, we've seen a bunch of these devices on my channel, it's like the super-thin,
02:38it's actually the thinnest gaming laptop on the market,
02:40but they've been able to stick a 17-inch screen onto the 15-inch chassis,
02:45and the way they did this was by having super-thin bezels.
02:49But in addition to having super-thin bezels, it also does not have a webcam.
02:53And I think this is something that, I don't know if every gaming company should do this,
02:56but because this is a device that's clearly geared for gaming, I'm cool with it not having a webcam.
03:01Now, they include a webcam, it's an external one, you can mount it on the screen or put it beside you,
03:05but the fact that it doesn't have a webcam gives it this really clean, ultra-thin bezel.
03:10And I think this is a really nice-looking laptop.
03:12To have a 17-inch screen on a 15-inch footprint, like, it just makes sense.
03:16They've also added a volume rocker this year, just above the WASD keys,
03:20and it's something that not a lot of gaming laptops have, but every time I've seen them, I've enjoyed using them.
03:25Basically, if you've ever played a game, and you just want to, like, hear something a little bit more clearly,
03:29like if you know something's coming, or you want to, like, crank up chat or something like this,
03:33on-the-fly volume control without interfering with your gaming experience.
03:37The rest of the device hasn't really changed, though.
03:39I've always enjoyed the shape of this thing, I've always enjoyed the aesthetics of it.
03:42Still has that lift mechanism to increase airflow for the internals.
03:46But that's basically it.
03:47Mothership and Zephyrus S, this thing's a beast, man.
03:51I feel like this is, like, I don't know if this is going to develop into, like, other laptop designs
03:57and other, kind of, product categories, but this is really cool.
04:01The amount of power that you can have in something that's this portable is impressive.
04:05Also, didn't mention earlier, the speakers up front, they sound awesome.
04:09There are four huge speakers right up the front, blasting right to the user.
04:14It's a pretty cool design.
04:15Okay, that wraps it up.
04:17Hope you guys enjoyed this video.
04:18Thumbs if you liked it, subs if you loved it.
04:19See you guys next time.
