00:00Hey, how's it going? Dave2D here. So this is a video on the MX150, the new laptop GPU from NVIDIA.
00:10And there's a little bit of confusion with this chip because the naming system isn't normal.
00:14The whole MX and then number isn't something they've done before in the past.
00:18So I thought I would do a little video that kind of talks about the GPU.
00:21This is a laptop GPU that was derived from the same chip as the desktop GT 1030.
00:27But it's surprisingly faster, which is weird, right? Because this is the laptop version.
00:31So a few days ago, I did a video on this thing, the Acer Aspire 5.
00:35And I showcased some games playing at 1080p on high graphics settings.
00:38And a lot of people were interested in this thing, but they wanted to see other games at other resolutions, other graphics settings.
00:44So I thought I'd just kind of spend some time on the weekend, played a ton of games, I have some more data.
00:49Lightweight titles are handled easily on this GPU.
00:52So shooters, MOBAs, whatever you want, you'll comfortably be able to hit 60 frames per second at 1080p on ultra graphics.
00:59Even something like Diablo 3, which can get graphically intense, will float above 70 frames per second.
01:04With Overwatch at 1080p, I had to drop it to high settings to keep good frame rates, but it still looks really good.
01:23Games that are more demanding, you'll have to drop it to medium settings at 1080p to stay close to 60 frames per second.
01:29And remember, you always have the option of lowering your resolution to keep your frame rate up.
01:33But let's step back for a moment.
01:35A lot of these games are AAA titles.
01:37These are flagship games that are often used to benchmark high-end desktop graphics.
01:42And now, a $600 laptop can play a lot of them at 60 frames per second.
01:47That's crazy. The thing that this thing replaced, like GPU that this thing replaced, is called the 940MX.
01:52And that thing could not handle most of these games at 1080p.
01:55This is really cool.
01:56There are limitations, though.
01:58The heaviest games, like Witcher 3 and GTA 5, they can still run, but you'll have to put it at the lowest resolution and graphic settings just to keep up smooth frame rates.
02:06So yeah, if you're only going to be playing these ultra-demanding games, then you're going to need a better GPU.
02:11Something like PUBG, that thing is not a well-optimized game, so you'll need to lower the resolution and graphic settings to make it smooth.
02:21Overall, I'm really impressed with the MX150.
02:24It's a lower-end GPU that's designed to fit into the whole mid-tier laptop segment, but the performance is surprisingly good.
02:30It really is twice as good as the 940MX it's replacing.
02:34It's kind of in between the 950M and 960M from last year, but it's not as good as the GTX 1050.
02:40Now, I'm not saying this is the greatest GPU ever, but these $600 mid-tier laptops are very capable for gaming.
02:46Now, I want to mention a few other things.
02:48First, the CPU and GPU combination that you see in this thing is actually pretty common for this particular GPU.
02:53So, it's a 7200U, it's a Kaby Lake CPU, and the MX150.
02:58And when you look at the internals, you'll often see a single heat pipe.
03:01And at first, you might think, oh my god, this is terrible, a single heat pipe for both components.
03:06But remember, this is a 15-watt CPU.
03:08A lot of gaming laptops have quad-core 45-watt CPUs that just produce a lot more heat.
03:13So, the thermal management on this thing is actually very sufficient.
03:16Another thing, if you'll notice, I don't have an FPS counter in any of my game footage.
03:21And if you're wondering why, it's because this CPU isn't great for recording while playing games.
03:27The moment I start recording, the frame rates drop a good 7 to 10 frames per second.
03:30And I didn't want to have, you know, inaccurate frame rates reading up at the top.
03:34So, you'll have to refer to the graphs for performance.
03:36But if you're looking to pick up this laptop to stream, it's not a good idea.
03:39And the last thing I want to mention is that this thing does not have shadowplay.
03:43So, in the menus, there's often this feature by Nvidia that allows you to record gameplay while you're playing.
03:48That feature seems to be disabled on the MX150.
03:50I don't think it's specific to this laptop. I think it's across all the MX150 laptops.
03:55But, yeah, it's missing.
03:57Okay, that's the end of this video. Hope it cleared some things up.
03:59Thumbs if you liked it, subs if you loved it.
04:01I'll see you guys next time.
04:06Peace.
