00:00:00This Silver Cup represents a season of combat.

00:00:03It is awarded each year to the IndyCar Champion.

00:00:06Fifty-eight have joined the fight.

00:00:08Four remain on top, led by Allenser Jr.

00:00:11The Albuquerque Kid holds 163 points and searches for his second title.

00:00:16His sole victory this year was the biggest of his life, the Indy 500 and its million-dollar purse.

00:00:21But his road has not been easy.

00:00:23Like at Vancouver, he refuses to give up.

00:00:26Al recovered from this upset to finish second.

00:00:29Here at Nazareth in 1990, he slammed the wall.

00:00:34But he still took the championship that same day.

00:00:37Bobby Rahal has led the points most of the year.

00:00:40He arrives here one point back.

00:00:44Much of this season, he has been steady and unstoppable, always in the fight, often at the front.

00:00:51But lately, his racing luck has changed.

00:00:53A month ago at Vancouver, a fight for second sent Rahal into the wall.

00:00:59And out of the race.

00:01:02Two weeks ago at MetOhio, a mistake of inches gave Bobby another pointless day.

00:01:09The defending champion, Michael Andretti, arrived here third with 152 points.

00:01:14He added another by taking the pole.

00:01:16In the middle of this season, Michael ripped off a string of wins at Portland, Milwaukee, Toronto, and Vancouver.

00:01:24He's led twice as many laps as his nearest competitor.

00:01:27Looking for his second championship, Michael has broken ten track records.

00:01:32There is no tougher driver in the series.

00:01:35But that's not always enough.

00:01:37Racing has played a role, as it did with mechanical failure, leaving him by the roadside two weeks ago.

00:01:42Like Rahal, he failed to earn a point.

00:01:45The 89 IndyCar champion, Emerson Fittipaldi, is 18 points behind.

00:01:50Four races ago, he was considered out of the fight.

00:01:53But then, he took a series of wins.

00:01:56Here at Lakefront Airport in Cleveland, he drove steadily away from all challengers, breaking the qualifying and the track record.

00:02:02At the Giant Road America Circuit, he outclassed his teammate and the rest of the field to take the win and edge closer in the points.

00:02:10Two weeks ago at MetOhio, as other contenders fell out, Fittipaldi set another race record and put the Penske team back into the championship battle.

00:02:21Now, with over 3,000 racing miles behind them and just two races to go, four men reach for the PPG Cup and the IndyCar championship at the Bosch Sparkplug Grand Prix.

00:02:33Race two coming up now, the Bosch IndyCar Grand Prix from the Nazareth Circuit.

00:02:38Now, this is a track that the Andrettis know extremely well.

00:02:41They live in the area, they've practiced and tested cars there for many, many years.

00:02:45Michael Andretti sitting on pole, but remember, Emerson Fittipaldi has won the last three of the four races.

00:02:50Bobby Rahal's consistency has fallen away a little bit toward the end of the season.

00:02:55And, of course, Little Al came from nowhere and leads the series by just one point.

00:03:00So, points really vital tonight.

00:03:02Now, fuel is going to be very critical in this race because the track is so short, the speeds are so high, and there's likely to be a lot of yellow flagging tonight because of the amount of traffic.

00:03:13The leaders will probably start tagging the tail-enders by at least lap six, seven, or eight in that area.

00:03:20So, it's going to be a pretty exciting race and points, as I said, pretty vital.

00:03:25Can Andretti hold on? He would love to win the series before moving into Grand Prix Formula One racing.

00:03:30Little Al, he'd like to sort of now make his mark and take the championship.

00:03:34And Bobby Rahal, who's been so consistent, would love to really consolidate his point.

00:03:39Emerson Fittipaldi, as I said, a three-time winner. Can he make it four on the trot tonight?

00:03:43Let's take you now to Paul Page. Derek Daly, pictures coming out of ESPN.

00:03:50Here's the diehard starting grid. On the pole, it's Michael Andretti, the winner of this event in 1987 and the new track record holder.

00:03:57Alongside Emerson Fittipaldi, a back-to-back winner here at Nazareth in 89 and 90.

00:04:02In the second row, Bobby Rahal.

00:04:04He has two wins on one-mile ovals this season, and John Andretti with his best qualifying effort all year.

00:04:10In row three, Mario Andretti, looking for his first win on his hometown track.

00:04:15And Scott Goodyear, the winner of the Michigan 500.

00:04:18In the fourth row, it's Scott Brayton, who finished third on the New Hampshire mile in July.

00:04:23And Eddie Cheever, a runner-up on the Phoenix mile back in April.

00:04:26In row number five, Paul Tracy, who ran second at mid-Ohio in the most recent IndyCar event.

00:04:31And Scott Pruitt, with nine top ten finishes this year.

00:04:34In the sixth row, Danny Sullivan, the 88th winner of this race.

00:04:38And Mike Groff, making his second start in A.J. Boyd's car.

00:04:41In the seventh row, it's Al Unzer, Jr., leading the chase for the PBG Cup by a single point.

00:04:46And Raul Boisel, with eight top ten efforts in 1992.

00:04:50In the eighth row, it's Ted Krapitz.

00:04:52And Stefan Johansson.

00:04:54In row number nine, it's Al Unzer, making his first Nazareth start since 1987.

00:05:00And Hiro Matsushita.

00:05:02In the tenth row, Buddy Lazier and Dennis Vitolo.

00:05:05The eleventh row is John Jones and Christian Danner.

00:05:09And alone in the twelfth and final row is Guido D'Ono.

00:05:13Weather today couldn't be better.

00:05:15Sun being blocked by clouds, that will help adhesion to the track.

00:05:19The temperature is perfect for these turbocharged engines, and there's no chance of rain.

00:05:24Looking over Al Unzer, Jr.'s right shoulder.

00:05:27200 laps lie ahead, 200 miles.

00:05:30Ari Leyendijk, the defending champion, is a spectator here today.

00:05:34Not racing in this field, but best indication is he may very soon announce a ride for next year.

00:05:40There's your pace car, the front row, not yet fully aligned.

00:05:43The rest of the field comes through.

00:05:46Pick out your champion.

00:05:48Al Unzer, Jr., you can see, is well back and has much to overcome if he is to come forward

00:05:54and continue to be a contender in the PPG points fight.

00:05:59Now the pace car pulls off onto the pit road.

00:06:02A most unusual configuration here.

00:06:04They enter and leave the pits over on the backside of the race course.

00:06:08The pace picks up.

00:06:09We look for Nick Funaro's green flag.

00:06:11The green flag comes out, and we are on the run at Nazareth, Pennsylvania.

00:06:19Down the backside, it's Michael Andretti chased by Bobby Rayholm.

00:06:22Look at Fittipaldi move up to challenge John Andretti.

00:06:25And coming alongside Fittipaldi, there's Mario.

00:06:28Mario humps down inside of Fittipaldi, and Mario comes forward.

00:06:32And absolutely forced the issue with Emerson.

00:06:35Looked his way down under braking for turn three.

00:06:39Emerson moved down, realized Mario was too close, and moved up.

00:06:43What a great run and a great outside move by John Andretti at turn two.

00:06:48Everybody held their breath on the start.

00:06:50That's the first time in four races that there has not been an incident

00:06:53on the opening lap of the run.

00:06:55John Andretti now coming up to challenge Bobby Rayholm,

00:06:58who runs in second place.

00:07:00Michael continues to pull away from Rayholm.

00:07:03And Andretti John goes around the outside of Rayholm.

00:07:06He tries it.

00:07:07John, who was apparently not satisfied with his car in some of the practice,

00:07:11now suddenly looking very strong as he moves around Rayholm.

00:07:15Rayholm back to third.

00:07:17John Andretti now into second.

00:07:19Andretti to challenge his cousin Michael.

00:07:22And a great qualifying run by John Andretti to start outside second row.

00:07:27Rayholm did get the jump on him, but superb moves at his early stage

00:07:31by John Andretti.

00:07:33Maybe he really now likes that car, although on full tanks yesterday

00:07:37he wasn't too happy with it.

00:07:39The leaders concerned about how soon they will encounter traffic on this course.

00:07:44Many believing that by the seventh lap they will already be overtaking

00:07:47the back of the field.

00:07:49We're on lap four, number one right now with the number one car,

00:07:53Michael Andretti, in front being chased by his cousin John.

00:07:56Bobby Rayholm sits in third, followed by Mario, then Emerson Fittipaldi.

00:08:00Let's look once again at that pass.

00:08:02John Andretti, the nice move.

00:08:05There is Mario coming down inside of Emerson Fittipaldi

00:08:08and taking Fittipaldi as he comes forward and putting Fittipaldi back to fifth.

00:08:14The view back from Bobby Rayholm's car, through the suspension of the right rear wheel.

00:08:19And that replay definitely showed you...

00:08:21Oh, we're into lap traffic already.

00:08:24Michael thinks he got blocked and raised his arms in frustration there.

00:08:28Things happen so fast here at Nazareth that even a driver moving out of the way

00:08:34can still cause the leading cars to have to back out of the power.

00:08:38Michael Andretti leads it. You can see traffic line ahead.

00:08:42Only three times in his career, in his last 27 starts,

00:08:46has Michael Andretti scored a victory on an oval.

00:08:51Scott Brayton, Paul Tracy, Cheever, all lining up.

00:08:55Seventh, eighth, and ninth place. Good fight.

00:08:59Cheever running ninth. Cheever was superb in qualifying,

00:09:02except the car was very, very good, but he had a fuel pressure problem.

00:09:07He got out of the car absolutely furious

00:09:10because he believed he could have been on the front row of the grid here.

00:09:13Look at him poke his nose down the inside of Paul Tracy.

00:09:17Now they, too, begin to encounter some slower traffic.

00:09:22But fortunately, it moves aside for him.

00:09:25Back from Scott Brayton's car. Here's Tracy coming to the outside.

00:09:29Oh, difficult move, difficult move.

00:09:31He's going to get pinned.

00:09:32Oh, they're side by side still.

00:09:35Another gutsy move by Paul Tracy, and he's able to pull it off.

00:09:39So Tracy gets around Scott Brayton and into seventh place.

00:09:43Now it's Cheever that lines Brayton up.

00:09:45And he pulled the move off, going into turn one,

00:09:48but it all started back at turns three and four.

00:09:51That's where Tracy made the commitment,

00:09:53and we had great shots from behind Brayton's car.

00:09:56That's where he made the commitment to go around the outside.

00:09:58Now Cheever attacks Brayton.

00:10:00Eddie Cheever takes a look. Just behind Cheever is Scott Pruitt,

00:10:03the crew sports chassis.

00:10:05We have much to tell you about that chassis for next year.

00:10:09We'll cover that a little later in the show as we watch Scott Brayton

00:10:12trying to hold off at charging Eddie Cheever.

00:10:15Back to the front of the field, looking at Fittipaldi and Mario Andretti

00:10:19as they continue their fight.

00:10:23You can see that Emerson actually did manage to squeeze back by Mario,

00:10:27has the tires now up to working temperature,

00:10:29so now he's on his way and on his charge, trying to catch up to Rahal.

00:10:35Al Unser Jr. in a precarious position right now.

00:10:39The field is moving so quickly at the front,

00:10:41and he is battling with so much traffic

00:10:43that he is about six seconds away from being lapped.

00:10:46And look at Scott Goodyear.

00:10:48He's going to fill Mario's mirrors in just a couple of seconds.

00:10:52Goodyear closes up behind Mario Andretti,

00:10:55and Paul Tracy is beginning to close in as well,

00:10:58trying to catch Scott Goodyear.

00:11:00Now the two Canadians are in direct contact with one another.

00:11:03Thirteen laps are complete,

00:11:05with Michael Andretti running at the front of the field,

00:11:08in front of a hometown crowd,

00:11:10looking for a victory and further points to a championship.

00:11:18Back at the Box Park Club Grand Prix,

00:11:20Mario Andretti has two Canadians,

00:11:22Scott Goodyear and Paul Tracy,

00:11:24lined up just behind him in an ongoing battle for fifth place.

00:11:34Fifteen laps now complete for the leader, Michael Andretti.

00:11:37Let's go pit side. Jan Beekus has this update.

00:11:40Well, speaking about Scott Goodyear,

00:11:42yesterday when he ran the car, the car got real loose in traffic.

00:11:45They decided to go with the Cascade wing.

00:11:47That's a double-element rear wing.

00:11:49If you look carefully, you'll see it.

00:11:51Interesting, that's the same thing that Mario Andretti has chosen,

00:11:54as well as Michael Andretti.

00:11:56In other words, the guys have gone for the setup to run fast in traffic.

00:12:00Interestingly enough, Ray Hall and John Andretti do not have that.

00:12:03Maybe they will be falling back in traffic.

00:12:05Keep an eye on it, Paul.

00:12:07We're watching that battle right now, John Andretti and Bobby Ray Hall,

00:12:10the ongoing battle for second place.

00:12:12John Andretti with much on the line here,

00:12:14because there is some suspicion that he might not be the chauffeur of this car next year.

00:12:20On the other hand, if he can turn in a series of good performances

00:12:23here at the end of the season,

00:12:25he might just be able to stay employed at Hall VDS.

00:12:28Well, there's nothing like a bit of pressure to bring the best out in a driver.

00:12:31That's what John Andretti does outside of Danny Sullivan, he goes.

00:12:35But John Andretti was superb at mid-Ohio

00:12:38and has been so far all this weekend, particularly in qualifying.

00:12:42As they move around Danny Sullivan,

00:12:44that might give you an indication of what Allenser Jr. may come to expect

00:12:48during this day in a similar Gellmer chassis.

00:12:53Similar but totally different.

00:12:55Allenser Jr.'s car is one of the development cars for next year's regulations.

00:13:00Fundamentally, a totally different feel of car.

00:13:04But Allenser Jr. had enough confidence in that car to say,

00:13:07yes, I think we should utilize a race weekend,

00:13:10even though it's difficult to continue the development of this car.

00:13:14Tremendous gamble in the points.

00:13:16Allenser Jr. sitting back in the field in 16th place.

00:13:22As there's Bobby Rahal taking a look inside of John Andretti once again.

00:13:29Oh, look at the traffic jam now ahead of John Andretti.

00:13:32That's the help Rahal needs.

00:13:34We heard Emerson say earlier on that traffic will be one of the major considerations here.

00:13:39And look, there is a traffic jam ahead of John Andretti.

00:13:43So now traffic will become the issue.

00:13:46That number four car is Allenser Jr. sitting in for Rick Mears.

00:13:52And look at this as they come three and four wide on the front stretch.

00:13:56And Rahal gets down inside of John Andretti.

00:13:59So Rahal back to second place.

00:14:03What you're seeing now is what oval track racing is all about.

00:14:07Two and three abreast racing, outside line, inside line.

00:14:11That's what makes this one mile oval track racing so special.

00:14:14Even people now like Stefan Johansson, who has no background in this at all,

00:14:18thinks it is the best form of racing he has ever experienced.

00:14:24Well, it will certainly keep a driver busy.

00:14:26Because if you're not involved in a battle of your own,

00:14:29you're almost certainly overcoming traffic at some time as you fly around this little mile oval.

00:14:35We call it a mile. It's a little bit less than that.

00:14:39But for statistical purposes, they consider it a mile track.

00:14:43Michael Andretti, now five seconds out in front of Bobby Rahal.

00:14:47And the good news is, for a moment at least, he has clear sailing ahead.

00:14:5124 laps are now complete.

00:14:58Now Fittipaldi closes down on John Andretti.

00:15:01A battle developing for third place.

00:15:05Let's go pit side. Gary Gerald.

00:15:07First car on pit road, very early with Danny Sullivan.

00:15:10Car was extremely loose. They made a wicker bill change on the rear wing.

00:15:14He's back on course. They didn't want to come in this early, Paul.

00:15:25So the fight continues now within the traffic.

00:15:28John Andretti started fourth, up to second for a while.

00:15:31Now back to third after that pass by Bobby Rahal, right in the middle of traffic.

00:15:38Here at Pennsylvania International Raceway.

00:15:40Gigantic crowd here today. In fact, they delayed some of the opening ceremonies

00:15:44just to be able to try to accommodate the record crowd that poured in this track.

00:15:49Let's take a look back now.

00:15:51And Bobby Rahal made his move on John Andretti.

00:15:54And it is a traffic jam, but look at this.

00:15:57John Andretti commits himself to be behind the P.I.G. car,

00:16:00but Rahal tries to slice down the inside.

00:16:03Doesn't get it done there.

00:16:05Now John is slowed. He's slowed a little bit down on the inside line.

00:16:10And that gives Rahal the run. See Rahal on the power, on the power early.

00:16:14And gets him the slingshot down the inside of John Andretti.

00:16:18Does that say something additionally, Derek, about how well Rahal may be handling down low?

00:16:24Oh, again, we have another pass.

00:16:26And there's Fittipaldi against John Andretti.

00:16:28So John Andretti's so strong at the start,

00:16:30with Fittipaldi moving up into third place, who's slowly fading backwards.

00:16:34And now Paul Tracy is going to give him all the problems he needs, too.

00:16:37Tracy's in attack mode here.

00:16:39Look at Tracy. Tries the high line, the outside line,

00:16:42but John quickly blocks it. He moves up.

00:16:45Tracy darts to the inside. Gets alongside John.

00:16:48Very, very close. John now knows he's there.

00:16:50And Tracy has passed.

00:16:52So John Andretti, who was so solidly in second place just a few laps ago,

00:16:56is now back in fifth.

00:16:58And that Tracy-type move is so risky under braking down a turn three,

00:17:02because remember, they enter that corner at 175 miles an hour.

00:17:07So wheels touch at that type of speed.

00:17:09Oh, and Paul Tracy comes around Fittipaldi.

00:17:12Fittipaldi gets caught in traffic, but now Tracy is caught behind Al Unser Jr.

00:17:16as they try to lap him.

00:17:18And, of course, little Al is not going to let anybody get past if he can avoid it at all.

00:17:22It's no move over. I'm a good guy on this race.

00:17:25It's too important in the points.

00:17:27Paul Tracy tries a high line to the outside.

00:17:29Gets alongside Al Unser Jr., and Tracy has passed.

00:17:32Now Fittipaldi has to handle him up.

00:17:34Well, Paul Tracy really, really has the bit between his teeth at the moment,

00:17:39but anticipating what traffic is going to do

00:17:42is half the secret to being successful on small ovals like this.

00:17:48So John Andretti back in the fight again as he tries to move to the outside of Al Unser,

00:17:53and now is between the two Unsers, father and son.

00:17:59So John Andretti seems like there may, in fact, be a problem with this car, Gary Gerald.

00:18:04Indeed, Paul. I just checked with Jim Hall of Hall of EDS Racing.

00:18:08They picked up a push, and so the car's not handling the way they'd hoped it would,

00:18:12and they're obviously paying a stiff price right now in all of this traffic.

00:18:17Now he finally makes his move on Al Unser Jr., gets past,

00:18:20but, of course, lap traffic here at Nazareth, but it did hold John Andretti up for a bit.

00:18:25And when you pick up a push, the biggest disadvantage it is,

00:18:28is down at turns three and four, exactly where we saw Rahal slide down underneath John Andretti.

00:18:34When you have pushed, you cannot get the power on early enough.

00:18:38That's the disadvantage John has to have now.

00:18:40Father and son battle now. Al Unser in the four car moves inside the three car of Al Unser Jr.

00:18:46It's a rotating battle for 13th place.

00:18:49Al Unser Jr. backfilling in for Rick Mears,

00:18:54who had already decided to sit out the season owing to his injury in his right wrist.

00:18:59The 200-mile record here, 148 miles an hour.

00:19:03They qualified, and they're running a 1.66.

00:19:09Pennsylvania, some of the beautiful churches, the beautiful architecture

00:19:13around this very old part of the United States.

00:19:16And it's the Nazareth kid, Michael Andretti, that leads this field.

00:19:20Raul Boesel is now sitting just in front of Michael

00:19:24as he battles with Scott Pruitt.

00:19:26It's a battle for 10th place.

00:19:29That's the problem you have here. Boesel and Pruitt cannot back off

00:19:33and move out of the way too much, even though the leader is there.

00:19:36So there has to be a very subtle line adjustment between Pruitt and Boesel

00:19:41So there has to be a very subtle line adjustment between Pruitt and Boesel

00:19:45to allow Michael to get by.

00:19:47But look, they have their own personal battle going on.

00:19:50It's been a clean race thus far. We're 40 laps into it, 40 miles into it.

00:19:55First pit stops, as we saw Scott Pruitt make a nice move there.

00:19:59First pit stops expected right after the 65th lap.

00:20:03And Boesel tried to poke his nose down the inside of Pruitt,

00:20:07didn't get the job done, and actually held up Michael.

00:20:10So Michael is being held up now by Raul Boesel.

00:20:13Michael Andretti drops back just a little bit.

00:20:16Sometimes that's a maneuver on an oval to get a surge forward and get going.

00:20:20But certainly in the points fight, Michael wants no part of any battle

00:20:24that might mean trouble for him.

00:20:26So Michael must tiptoe, despite the fact that he is leading this race.

00:20:30There's the longest straight here at Nazareth, and it is not very long.

00:20:33You can see from all our pictures here just about,

00:20:36you're virtually turning the steering wheel all through the lap here at Nazareth.

00:20:41Paul Tracy in third continues his pursuit of Bobby Rahal.

00:20:46And is in close contact with Rahal now, and closing in.

00:20:57Rahal has been very powerful here on this oval in the practice.

00:21:02Was looking very strong in the Marlboro Challenge.

00:21:05On board now, the Quaker State on board camera of Scott Goodyear.

00:21:09Goodyear runs in sixth place.

00:21:13Goodyear has been so good on oval tracks this year.

00:21:16That's Al Unser, Jr. He's trying to pass. Comes right up behind him.

00:21:19Al, Jr., you can see, is down on the low line.

00:21:22Now, Goodyear may try and go around the outside here.

00:21:25He's not close enough. This is the long uphill turn two.

00:21:29Remember the Indianapolis 500, first and second?

00:21:32Boy, if only Scott Goodyear could have pulled that little move off

00:21:35just before the finish line at Indianapolis.

00:21:37Let's ride with Scott Goodyear just a moment here, and look how these laps kick off.

00:21:52That's John Jones, he just passed.

00:21:58And as you can see, for all of them, it is a very, very busy run around this track.

00:22:18Scott Brayton, Mario Andretti continue their fight.

00:22:21This is a fight for seventh place.

00:22:23Scott Brayton trying to close in, Mario trying to handle up traffic.

00:22:28Stephan Johansson moves to the outside.

00:22:31This is Stephan's baptism at Nazareth.

00:22:33He says, you're very, very busy here all the time.

00:22:36However, did not get the car quite to his liking.

00:22:39But it must still be an uphill battle and learning curve for Stephan

00:22:43to get on top of these difficult one-mile ovals.

00:22:47Riding now with Scott Brayton.

00:22:51The surge takes him forward a little bit.

00:22:53He catches Al, but can't get past him.

00:22:57Oh, he gets past himself. Mario slips by.

00:23:00Mario Andretti moving down on the inside.

00:23:03Is that Mario or Michael that came past him on the inside?

00:23:06Things happen so fast, Mario and Michael are actually running together on the racetrack.

00:23:15Michael Andretti leads this race.

00:23:19Take a look at Fittipaldi there.

00:23:21And take a look now at Scott and Paul Tracy moving up on the back of Bobby Rahal.

00:23:29Now he comes to the outside, tries to split him.

00:23:32Behind them is Fittipaldi.

00:23:34But the challenge is Tracy's given to Rahal.

00:23:37He gets caught in traffic, almost squeezed out of the traffic.

00:23:40And Tracy is brave.

00:23:42He is a man that will take a chance to try and slide down the inside.

00:23:46And Rahal knows that, so he has to try and protect his position.

00:23:50But remember, they're rounding Turn 2 here at 145 miles an hour.

00:23:55Now some fast-moving traffic just ahead for both of them.

00:23:58Rahal will of course encounter it first.

00:24:01Scott Pruitt sees it, moves to the outside, lets Rahal through.

00:24:04But now Pruitt has Tracy behind him.

00:24:12Rahal moving out as we take a look at the race summary here with Michael Andretti leading all the way from the green flag.

00:24:18And Paul Tracy looking for room inside of Rahal, but Rahal shuts the door again.

00:24:23No cautions thus far.

00:24:25And look at that average speed at 165 miles an hour with last year's track record of 148.5.

00:24:33Paul Tracy, 23 years old, but he has over 3,000 miles of testing on this racetrack here for Penske.

00:24:48That's right, Paul. Now is when the calculations take place.

00:24:51We're in Scott Goodyear's pit. We are now checking in. We're about 20 laps from pit stops.

00:24:55What they're doing is they are checking not only the lap times, but the fuel to make sure everybody stays on their fuel schedule.

00:25:01They figure it all out by computer ahead of time.

00:25:04They keep a very close eye on the clipboards.

00:25:06About 20 laps, it's going to be frantic down here, Paul.

00:25:09And Jan, the whole point is that at the distance of this race, if you miss those two stops by much,

00:25:14you can put yourself into a three-stop race pretty quickly.

00:25:17Well, that's right, Paul. Remember, that was the outcome last year.

00:25:19We had a couple of people who had to make those late-race pit stops,

00:25:22and then R.A. Leindyke didn't surprise everybody and got the victory.

00:25:25Now, everyone knows you can do it in two stops. R.A. Leindyke did it.

00:25:28They're trying to repeat that this year.

00:25:30Rahal released from the pressure for a moment. Michael Andretti continues his lead.

00:25:36R.A. Leindyke did do it, but he did have help from a yellow flag.

00:25:40That makes a big difference here at Nazareth.

00:25:42Late-race yellow. Michael Andretti looking for career win number 27.

00:25:49And there's, out in front, is Michael Andretti.

00:25:56That's the 30 car, John Jones, up against the barrier, and so all of the leaders will head for the pits.

00:26:02It's a little bit early, but it just may fit within the window.

00:26:06Yellow flag is out. There's Michael Andretti, the leader of the race, is already in and out.

00:26:11Paul Tracy makes his stop.

00:26:15The rest of the top of the order of this field should make a stop,

00:26:19but then, Derek Daly, we're talking about a time in the race in which we could see some tactics played.

00:26:26Some crews may opt, in fact, to stay out and hope for another.

00:26:29Well, in fact, Mario Andretti flew by here. He elected to stay out longer than everybody else,

00:26:34so he is playing a different game than Michael.

00:26:36But they usually factor in a yellow flag situation here,

00:26:40because the field is so tight, it's difficult to go flat out for the full course of the race

00:26:45if they watch Allenser make his stop nice and cleanly.

00:26:49So most of the field in the pits, the man who has not stopped,

00:26:53as we take a look at Mario making his stop,

00:26:56and anticipated on pit road is Scott Goodyear.

00:26:59But remember, on his crew, Derek Walker and Laurie Garish,

00:27:04both guys who know really how to cycle these stops,

00:27:07and look at Michael, he's saying,

00:27:08Fittipaldi, get back there, you don't belong in front of me.

00:27:11Michael's not happy with that one, and Michael gets the position.

00:27:15Well, maybe not, there's still a nose there.

00:27:17Yeah, Michael knows how to use his in-car camera.

00:27:20He knows there's a lot of people watching that in-car camera,

00:27:23and he has a beef with Emerson at the moment.

00:27:28Mario Andretti, going down a little bit on the backstretch,

00:27:33I think just looking to rotate into position.

00:27:36As Scott Goodyear, we were suggesting as we passed over the 60th lap,

00:27:40is one of the few in the field that have not stopped.

00:27:43And Michael's saying, no, no, no, shaking his helmet.

00:27:46Look, he still thinks Emerson has done something wrong.

00:27:49So Emerson Fittipaldi trying to move into a position ahead of Michael Andretti.

00:27:54Michael's not going to have any of it.

00:27:56Well, the silly season is now in full bloom,

00:27:58but it's not just the drivers that are being chosen.

00:28:00Jan Beekhuis takes a look at the equipment decisions

00:28:03the owners are making these days.

00:28:14This time of year is when team owners make those final decisions

00:28:17on chassis and power plants for 1993.

00:28:20Now, if you want top technology and engines,

00:28:23that choice would be either the Chevy Ilmore C or the Ford Cosworth XB.

00:28:28They both have similar programs in that they recommend

00:28:31a minimum of seven engines per driver,

00:28:33and they ask you to enter into a lease program that's two years in length.

00:28:37The reason they do that, to amortize the cost of research and development

00:28:41over a longer period of time.

00:28:43Well, you may say, well, why lease engines?

00:28:45The reason you lease the engines is they want to protect the technology

00:28:48of these engines, and therefore, you don't own it, you can't take it apart.

00:28:52If something happens inside, this engine gets shipped back to Cosworth

00:28:55where it's rebuilt.

00:28:57Then it's time to think about chassis.

00:28:59Well, if you're Roger Penske or you're Rick Gallas,

00:29:01you might choose to build your own chassis.

00:29:04But most people will go with the Lola.

00:29:06Then you have to decide, well, do I want two or three?

00:29:09Most teams will offer three cars per driver.

00:29:12They cost $425,000 each, but it doesn't end there,

00:29:16because most teams will spend as much as $100,000

00:29:19outfitting this car just the way they want it.

00:29:22They might spend another $100,000 on the dash here,

00:29:25the telemetry, the data acquisition.

00:29:27All these costs we talk about, remember, that's only the capital cost.

00:29:31We haven't even mentioned the consumables.

00:29:33There's an old adage in racing, speed costs money how fast you want to go.

00:29:38Scott Goodyear has made his stop

00:29:42and as a result moves back into second place as we look at his onboard camera.

00:29:47Let's take a look at the situation that set this yellow flag up.

00:29:51We'll be looking from Allenser Jr.'s onboard camera

00:29:55because apparently he was lined up just behind the situation, Derek.

00:29:59This is turn two. It's the uphill left-hander.

00:30:03Oh, you can see John Jones simply loses the control of the car.

00:30:07The back end gets away from him and he backs it into the outside wall.

00:30:12In slow motion now, Derek Daly, watching the car just in front.

00:30:15The car's gone. The car's gone away from him,

00:30:17backs it into the wall, breaks the rear suspension and the wings,

00:30:20slides all the way down, and then actually comes across the racetrack,

00:30:24just missing Allenser Jr.

00:30:27And you see, look at little Al as he just kind of glanced over

00:30:30to see the fate of John Jones.

00:30:32We are now under yellow. We continue that way

00:30:35with 64 laps complete in the Bosch Spark Plug Grand Prix.

00:30:41In the run now, we look at the rundown at 74 laps.

00:30:44It has not changed because we are still under yellow,

00:30:47but we should be coming back to a green flag condition very shortly

00:30:51and approaching the halfway point in the race.

00:30:53For Scott Goodyear, that change may be paying off.

00:30:55He's the fastest lap thus far in the race at 174.7 miles an hour.

00:31:00And there comes the green flag, and we're back to running.

00:31:03Michael Andretti leads Bobby Rahal.

00:31:05There is Rahal. Just behind him is Paul Gracie,

00:31:08once again trying to make the move on Rahal.

00:31:11With those pit stops, there were some guys that suffered.

00:31:14One of them was John Andretti who fell back,

00:31:16and Mario Andretti, and look at John right there

00:31:19as he's alongside Allenser Jr.

00:31:21And Mario Andretti benefited through those stops

00:31:24and was able to move up into fourth place.

00:31:26Well, John Andretti again in the opening lap stop for the restart

00:31:29drove around the outside of Boesel

00:31:32and sliced down in under Emerson Fittipaldi.

00:31:35So, John Andretti, when the tires are cool

00:31:38or when there's heavy fuel load, this car is superb.

00:31:41Just behind Fittipaldi, there is Rahal.

00:31:44Fittipaldi, of course, trying to move.

00:31:46And look at Paul Gracie come around Rahal.

00:31:49All three of them battling there.

00:31:51Boy, what a tremendous fight this is.

00:31:53And, of course, Fittipaldi is trying desperately

00:31:56to make up a lap to get back on the leader lap.

00:31:59Now Paul Gracie challenging his teammate.

00:32:01You're right, that's Emerson's key.

00:32:03He needed to catch Michael and try and get that lap back.

00:32:06He will be in real trouble if he gets into a fight

00:32:09with his teammate here, but Gracie was on the move earlier.

00:32:12You can't hold him back.

00:32:14Can Paul Gracie help Fittipaldi in any way at this point?

00:32:17No, I think Paul has to worry about his own race

00:32:20and his own race only. Forget about Emerson.

00:32:22Paul needs to catch Michael because he can win this race.

00:32:25Paul Gracie can win this event.

00:32:27What Paul Gracie must worry about right now

00:32:29is 3rd place Bobby Rahal sitting just behind him.

00:32:32And Rahal can't be happy with having that young fellow

00:32:35dart around him that quickly.

00:32:37Most of the cars still running heavy loads

00:32:39because they all stopped for fuel and tires

00:32:42their first stop of the day under the caution flag.

00:32:46The caution, of course, for John Jones.

00:32:49Best indications are that he is OK

00:32:52as a result of his altercation with the wall.

00:32:55And Boesel running very strongly here after his 5th stop.

00:32:59He's only in 11th place, but you can see

00:33:01that he has the speed to stay ahead of Emerson Fittipaldi

00:33:05because Fittipaldi has not made a lunge or an attempt

00:33:08to pass Boesel yet.

00:33:12Michael Andretti got a good restart.

00:33:14Now is pulling 6.6 seconds ahead of the 2nd place car

00:33:18of Paul Gracie.

00:33:19Separating them is Emerson Fittipaldi

00:33:22and Bobby Rahal continues to work on Paul Gracie for 2nd.

00:33:27John Andretti almost cuts a front end off a Chambers car.

00:33:31Darts down inside of Scott Pruitt.

00:33:34John Andretti is making such decisive moves here

00:33:38particularly in track that we haven't seen

00:33:40a confidence level in John like this

00:33:43on an oval track this year.

00:33:50which is very necessary on an oval.

00:33:52But look at the traffic jam again behind.

00:33:54Tracy Rahal continues to fight.

00:33:58Well, I don't know what happened there,

00:33:59but Boesel is either in trouble

00:34:01or he decided to just let that complete train go ahead of him.

00:34:05Sudden move by Boesel.

00:34:07By the way, Allens or Junior, if you're keeping track of him,

00:34:10remember he came into this race as the points leader

00:34:13and here he is.

00:34:14He runs now in 12th place.

00:34:16That's the last points-paying position

00:34:18and his dad is worrying him to death.

00:34:23Learning curve for Al Junior.

00:34:25This car fundamentally totally different

00:34:28to the Gell-Mercari he's raced all year.

00:34:30It is the development car for next year.

00:34:33It's a brave decision to make

00:34:35to develop this car during this weekend

00:34:37considering the points battle,

00:34:39but I think that shows the confidence Al Junior had

00:34:41in this car that he would actually take that decision.

00:34:45Just behind him is his father

00:34:47setting in for Rick Mears.

00:34:49Now, Derek, can his father watch that car?

00:34:51And when this is all over, say,

00:34:53Al, I was watching this or that on you.

00:34:55Here's something you might want to consider.

00:34:57I don't think so in this day and age.

00:34:59These cars are so fast.

00:35:00You see so little suspension movement.

00:35:02These cars either have grip or they don't.

00:35:05You cannot really see a lot of movement

00:35:07in the cars in this day and age.

00:35:09So really, I don't think it can be of much benefit.

00:35:11So the way they judge what they need to change on that car

00:35:14as well as most of them

00:35:16is what the driver tells them

00:35:17and then what the computers tell them.

00:35:19Exactly.

00:35:20And the computer is the only thing that doesn't lie.

00:35:22You wouldn't suggest that a driver might not know.

00:35:25Oh, I never suggested that.

00:35:27All the drivers saying,

00:35:28Oh, yeah, absolutely.

00:35:29I'm flat all the way around here

00:35:31until they show them the computer tape.

00:35:33Raul Boissel battling now with Scott Pruitt.

00:36:37of trying to un-lap himself.

00:36:39But to do so, he has quite a battle.

00:36:42He must get around Michael Lendretti

00:36:44who is well ahead on the race course.

00:36:46And right now, he's actually involved

00:36:48in a fight with Bobby Rahal.

00:36:51Well, the only thing that can help Emerson

00:36:53from what we can see now

00:36:54with the speed he can run

00:36:56is another yellow flag situation.

00:36:58If he can get a yellow

00:36:59and catch it properly

00:37:00and make up that lap,

00:37:01that is the only thing

00:37:02that will get him back on pace

00:37:03with Michael and the leaders

00:37:04because, look, he doesn't have the speed.

00:37:06Look at Rahal

00:37:07as he tries to slice down the inside.

00:37:10That's the only area you can pass here.

00:37:13Almost the only area

00:37:14because that's where they get on the brakes.

00:37:16But the high line is so fast

00:37:19that it's very difficult

00:37:20to actually outbrake somebody

00:37:21and pull the pass off.

00:37:22Look at John again.

00:37:23This is the patented Lendretti outside line.

00:37:27But now it's John

00:37:28instead of the usual Michael.

00:37:30Fittipaldi comes around Boesel as well,

00:37:33continues his pursuit.

00:37:36This is a Penske-owned and operated track,

00:37:39and because of that,

00:37:40look at this traffic with Scott Goodyear

00:37:43and Michael.

00:37:44Because of that fact,

00:37:46it is a track that they test on a great deal.

00:37:50They have a lot of opportunity to test,

00:37:52and so Fittipaldi should have

00:37:53the best settings on this circuit.

00:37:55But right now, it's Michael Lendretti

00:37:57that's looking so very strong here.

00:37:59Mario's not that happy with this car,

00:38:01and he's not as confident

00:38:02entering corners as Michael is.

00:38:05So I'm sure you'll see Michael

00:38:06sliced by Mario.

00:38:07I'm sure in the past,

00:38:08he would never back off

00:38:09and let anybody by.

00:38:11But I'm sure for Michael's championship hunt,

00:38:13he will make it easy for him.

00:38:22seeing father and son race it out?
