00:00:00...greatest prize.
00:00:05For Fittipaldi, it was a million-dollar mistake,
00:00:09giving Al a million-dollar day, his second Indianapolis crown.
00:00:15Now, it's the road to the championship in the Miller Genuine Draft 200 on the Milwaukee Mile.
00:00:20Four years ago, Al spun here, but it didn't faze Junior.
00:00:24He made Milwaukee his first global win.
00:00:27Michael Andretti's had mixed luck here, like running out of fuel on the last lap at 90,
00:00:31and then winning back-to-back the next two years.
00:00:35It was on the Milwaukee Mile last year that Nigel Mansell scored his first oval win.
00:00:40That began his climb to the PPG Championship,
00:00:43and historic back-to-back crown in Formula One and in IndyCar.
00:00:48The players are all here. The road to the championship is ahead.
00:00:52The challenge is 200 laps on the Milwaukee Mile.

00:01:15The IndyCar drivers have begun to strap on their cars.
00:01:18Let's go to the starting grid in Jackeroot.
00:01:20Paul, what a difference one week makes.
00:01:23Cart IndyCar sanctions the Milwaukee Mile, not USAC,
00:01:26so the Mercedes engines used by Team Penske for an Indy 500 victory are not allowed.
00:01:30Twelve months ago, this man driving a Dick Simon car, Raul Boisel, was on the pole.
00:01:34He's on the pole again, but they're winless.
00:01:36They've never won an IndyCar race.
00:01:38On the outside of row number one, it's Paul Tracy, the Canadian.
00:01:41Having a terrible season so far, he wants to turn it around today.
00:01:44And look at Derek Walker's team on the inside of row number two.
00:01:47Robbie Gordon, with his best qualifying effort in his career,
00:01:50he'll start in third position.
00:01:52And flanking him on the outside,
00:01:54the youngster who is the youngest IndyCar driver of the season,
00:01:57Jacques Villeneuve, hot off his second place at the Indy 500,
00:02:00his first tour of the Milwaukee Mile today.
00:02:03There are even more stories in rows three and four, right, Gary Gerald?
00:02:06A lot of surprises, Jack. You start right here inside row three.
00:02:09Scott Goodyear, remember how he struggled last month to make the field at Indianapolis?
00:02:12Here he is now, starting number five on the grid.
00:02:15And alongside, Dominic Dobson from the PacWest team.
00:02:18He has the second fastest qualifying effort of his career, but problems this morning.
00:02:22He got into the wall during a warm-up session.
00:02:24Extensively damaged one side of the car.
00:02:26They've made repairs. He'll start in the third row.
00:02:28And then back in the fourth row, even more surprises.
00:02:31You've got Brian Hurdy in only his second IndyCar race for A.J. Foyt.
00:02:35He starts inside row number four.
00:02:37An impressive rookie from the Indy Lights ranks.
00:02:39The veteran, Emerson Fittipaldi, alongside in row number four.
00:02:42Only one second separates the top 19 qualifiers today.
00:02:47And back in the field, many other marquee names.
00:02:50Starting with Nigel Mansell, Michael, Mario Andretti.
00:02:53And defending 500 champion, Al Unser Jr.
00:02:55Paul, we've got the ingredients for a sensational race on the Milwaukee Mile.
00:02:59Gary, some truly great stories here today.
00:03:02Now, as we speak to you live, it is overcast here.
00:03:05With a report that there is rain just 60 miles to the west of us in Madison, Wisconsin.
00:03:10So we'll keep an eye on that throughout the afternoon.
00:03:12Now, you use so many words to describe the Milwaukee Mile.
00:03:15It's tight, it's flat, it's incredibly fast, it's torturous.
00:03:19And all those words are why fans and race drivers alike enjoy the Milwaukee Mile.
00:03:24It's created some great races over its history as the oldest racetrack in the United States, if not in the world.
00:03:30Well, the drivers are ready.
00:03:3126 IndyCars on the grid.
00:03:33Let's take a look at the starting grid.
00:03:37On the pole is Raul Boisell, last year's pole winner and second-place finisher.
00:03:42Alongside Paul Tracy, who's starting second in his second race at Milwaukee.
00:03:47In row two is Robbie Gordon, who was leading at Phoenix when he ran out of fuel.
00:03:51And Chuck Villeneuve, coming off a second-place finish in the Indy 500.
00:03:55Row three, Scott Goodyear, who led 35 laps here last year.
00:03:58And Dominic Thompson, the IndyCar veteran, making his first Milwaukee start.
00:04:02In row four, to the inside is Brian Hurta, making his second IndyCar start for the legendary A.J. Boyd.
00:04:07And Emerson Fittipaldi, the winner at Phoenix.
00:04:10Row five, Nigel Mansell, the defending champion here.
00:04:13And Tao Bobby.
00:04:14The sixth row, Indy winner Alan Turd Jr. and Michael Andretti.
00:04:18Row seven, Mario Andretti and Stephon Johansson.
00:04:21Row eight, Scott Sharp and Timmy Vassar.
00:04:24In the ninth row, Mauricio Guzelme and Ari Leyenda.
00:04:27Row ten, Bobby Rahal and Willie T. Ribbs.
00:04:30Row eleven, Marco Greco and Mark Smith.
00:04:33The twelfth row, Mike Groff and Buddy Lazier.
00:04:36And the thirteenth row, Hiro Matsushita and Adrian Fernandez.
00:04:44Twenty-six IndyCars are ready to go.
00:04:47Now we want to give our best wishes to our Indy producer, Bob Goodrich, who is not feeling well.
00:04:52Bob, get well soon, please.
00:05:00The Miller Genuine Draft 200.
00:05:03Brought to you by Cold Filtered Miller Genuine Draft.
00:05:06Get out of the old, get into the cold.
00:05:08Haviland Formula 3 Motor Oil.
00:05:10Add more life to your car.
00:05:12Target, where you can expect more and pay less.
00:05:16And Splitfire, the patented performance spark plug.
00:05:20It only costs more until you use it.
00:05:24We're back live at the Milwaukee Mile, where the cry is ready to go out for the 26 IndyCars to start their engines.
00:05:31Now, Sam Posey, this track has a reputation for creating brand-new winners.
00:05:35Well, Paul, it's an interesting statistic.
00:05:38Four great drivers, Nigel Mansell, Mario Andretti, Michael Andretti, and Al Unser Jr.,
00:05:44have all won their first Oval IndyCar race here in Milwaukee.
00:05:49Well, if that is true, then Bobby Unser, who are you looking for as a potential winner?
00:05:53Well, the guys that could get on Sam's list are Boyz Al, Robbie Gordon, and Jacques Villeneuve.
00:05:58And, Paul, they're all fast here at Milwaukee this weekend.
00:06:01All right, so the command has gone out for the green flag.
00:06:05We'll be out in just a few minutes, and we'll be back for the start of the Miller Genuine Draft 200 here on the Milwaukee Mile.
00:06:12We're live at the Milwaukee Mile as Johnny Rutherford in the PPG Pace car has concluded the first of the parade laps leading up to the pace lap of the race.
00:06:27Johnny Rutherford there in that red Mustang.
00:06:29Raul Boyz Al, he was on the pole here one year ago.
00:06:32The weather, well, there is the chance of some rain here this afternoon.
00:06:36Everybody is keeping an eye to the west.
00:06:39That's the sky from which the weather comes.
00:06:41200 laps, 200 miles.
00:06:43The race record is held here by Michael Andretti, set in 1992.
00:06:47And, of course, Nigel Mansell is the defending champion here.
00:06:50Still looking for his first win this year as we take a look over Nigel's right-hand shoulder.
00:06:55Robbie Gordon, that's spectacular.
00:06:57Camera mount from the Indianapolis 500 on the left side.
00:07:00Over Michael Andretti's right rear tire.
00:07:03The camera actually mounted on the rear wing of the car.
00:07:07Over the right shoulder of the pole sitter, Raul Boyz Al.
00:07:11And then we've got that nose cam from Bobby Rahal's car where you can look right out front.
00:07:16No antenna on it this time, though, so it's a totally unobstructed view that you have
00:07:21as they cross over the start-finish line once again and down into the first turn
00:07:25while the pace car is already coming off of turn two and onto the back stretch.
00:07:31There's the field, nicely aligned.
00:07:34Paul Tracy alongside in the front row.
00:07:37The second row of Robbie Gordon and Jacques Villeneuve.
00:07:41They begin to close to their more traditional lineup and tuck right in as close as they can.
00:07:47It's almost as if Robbie Gordon is beginning to telegraph a move to the inside.
00:07:51We'll keep an eye on him.
00:07:53The first four rows, well-aligned as Raul Boyz Al paces him off the corner,
00:07:59picks up the pace.
00:08:03And here we go.
00:08:09Paul Tracy sweeping down toward the outside, trying to get around Raul Boyz Al.
00:08:14They come off the corner side-by-side.
00:08:16Tracy forges ahead.
00:08:18Well, that's one of the best contests between a Ford or a Chevy engine or an Elmore engine
00:08:23that I ever saw, Paul.
00:08:24Michael Andretti trying to make a move up through the field now.
00:08:27We'll stay on board with him for a second as Tracy takes over the lead from Raul Boyz Al.
00:08:32Gordon is third. Villeneuve is fourth.
00:08:35Tracy had trouble all through the warm-up.
00:08:37Couldn't put two laps together.
00:08:39Suddenly, the Penske team seems to have gotten his car right.
00:08:42A lot of struggling during this morning's warm-up session,
00:08:45which also, by the way, caused some damage to Dominic Dobson's car
00:08:49and to Adrian Fernandez's car.
00:08:51They both got into the wall, but both were repaired in time to start.
00:08:56Michael Andretti on the start there was able to jump from 12th up to 5th.
00:09:00We're back on board with Michael.
00:09:04That's a lot of these drivers, Paul.
00:09:06Milwaukee is the place that they like the most.
00:09:08For the small track, the short track, this is the place.
00:09:11And this is one of the guys right here, Michael Andretti.
00:09:13He just loves the place.
00:09:15That right rear tire turning about 2,000 RPM right now.
00:09:20On the home stretch now.
00:09:22Right in the grandstand with the largest crowd I've ever seen here at the Milwaukee miles.
00:09:27Spectacular crowd here today.
00:09:29Paul Tracy runs alone in the lead.
00:09:34Tracy, of course, had a big lead here last year when he ran into trouble, had a crash.
00:09:39And that has been the story so often for him in races.
00:09:42It's funny, though. Now that Indy is over, it's as if a great weight was lifted off Tracy.
00:09:46He's really racing today.
00:09:48Second place, Raul Boissel. You ride with him now.
00:09:51Paul Tracy just sits ahead as they work to the back stretch.
00:09:53Now watch as we're on board with these cameras and the guys go into the turn.
00:09:57Watch and see how they go down.
00:09:59Use the yellow line or the white line to the left as your guide.
00:10:03You can see the yellow line and the white line.
00:10:05And you can see the different patterns that the different guys use.
00:10:08For example, Boissel or right there, Paul Tracy.
00:10:12They all have different concepts of how they're going to go through the turn.
00:10:15Bobby, as we watch Raul Boissel here in the orange and black car,
00:10:19I talked to him about 20 minutes before the start.
00:10:22I said, Raul, it's had a great weekend for you.
00:10:24You've got the pole, everything looks good.
00:10:26He said, yeah, but the car is very tricky to handle here.
00:10:29It goes from understeer to oversteer and back to understeer in just a lap or two.
00:10:32Very hard driving, he said.
00:10:34You can watch Boissel right there as he went through three and four turns.
00:10:37He never went underneath the yellow line.
00:10:39He touched it two times, stayed out.
00:10:41Now on that turn, that's considered kind of a high line.
00:10:44Emerson Fittipaldi battles with rookie Brian Hurta.
00:10:47It's a fight for sixth place.
00:10:49Hurta in the black A.J. Foyt car on the left of the screen.
00:10:54Fittipaldi tried to put the nose down inside.
00:10:56Lost momentum, had to pull back out of it.
00:10:58And he really is just doing a fake deal on Hurta.
00:11:01He wants to get Hurta to pull down, tighten his line up, Paul.
00:11:04Just slow down a little bit.
00:11:05This is only Hurta's second race, and he lets Emerson by.
00:11:08There goes Fittipaldi as he moves into sixth place.
00:11:11And Hurta will quickly have a challenge from behind.
00:11:14Now Villeneuve comes out to challenge the back end of Robby Gordon.
00:11:18This is a fight for third.
00:11:19And a fight among two brilliant young drivers.
00:11:2225 years old Robby Gordon, 23 Jacques Villeneuve.
00:11:26Now the one, the Villeneuve in the car that's in second right here on the screen,
00:11:30a little different blue there, he's been shifting, Sam and Paul.
00:11:33He's been coming out of the turn, running about a fourth of the way down the straightaway,
00:11:37shifting into a higher gear, which means in the turns,
00:11:40around the turns, he has a little lower gear ratio.
00:11:43Back on board, Michael, as Penske cars continue to come up through the field.
00:11:49First it was Emerson coming around.
00:11:52As now, Al Unser Jr. begins to challenge Michael.
00:11:59And Michael's not going to have much of it.
00:12:02But Jr. is in a position off the corner.
00:12:06Great racing at Milwaukee.
00:12:07You see this all the time, side-by-side racing.
00:12:11Now those two guys run together enough to where they kind of know what each other is going to do.
00:12:15That's the only way they can run side-by-side all the way through one of two turns there, Bob.
00:12:20Bobby, you've raced a lot of laps at this track.
00:12:22How would you rate it among all the tracks in the country to drive?
00:12:25Sam, I think it's the nicest oval track that we have.
00:12:28It's a perfect oval.
00:12:29Both turns are the same shape.
00:12:31The track is flat.
00:12:32It's always what they call a driver's racetrack, or the guys really have to work hard.
00:12:37Fittipaldi tries to the inside of Villeneuve.
00:12:39Can't get that job done.
00:12:40There's Tracy, still the leader of the race.
00:12:42But now he begins to encounter traffic.
00:12:44Voisel comes out to take the slower traffic.
00:12:46Now here comes Robbie Gordon, Villeneuve, and Fittipaldi as they will come into the slower cars.
00:12:51And that will make a world of difference in how they get around.
00:12:54Now Fittipaldi's going to cause Jacques Villeneuve, right there on the right-hand side, to go a little bit harder.
00:12:58You see, look at that.
00:12:59Whoa!
00:13:00He didn't either. He just blew right by him.
00:13:02So Fittipaldi now up to challenge Robbie Gordon.
00:13:05And here comes Little Al.
00:13:07He'll try to dial around the outside of Villeneuve.
00:13:10Then he comes to the inside, on the front stretch.
00:13:13Robbie Gordon battles with Fittipaldi.
00:13:16You got a glimpse of it for a second.
00:13:18Here is Little Al as he comes off of two.
00:13:21Still trying to get Jacques and Fittipaldi has passed Gordon.
00:13:24Brian Hurt is right there.
00:13:25Nope, that's Mark Smith.
00:13:27There comes Little Al as he gets caught behind Mark Smith.
00:13:30Well, the traffic in Milwaukee is rough.
00:13:32You know, you're only taking just in the lower 20-second bracket to get around this track.
00:13:3623 to 24 seconds a lap.
00:13:38Boy, the traffic gets really bad like it is right now.
00:13:41Little Al, of course, jumped up from 11th place.
00:13:44Scott Goodyear is having some problems.
00:13:46He fell from 5th back to 14th.
00:13:48You're on board, Robbie Gordon.
00:13:49Watch how wide a line Robbie Gordon takes through the turn.
00:13:52Whoa!
00:13:54Little Al drops to the inside of Robbie.
00:13:57And just that quickly, he has passed.
00:13:59The Penske car is very definitely on the move.
00:14:02Gordon has been taking a wide line through the turns all weekend.
00:14:06Passing cars in practice.
00:14:08And I think it will serve him well in the race
00:14:11because he'll be able to make passes on the slower cars that others can't.
00:14:15You know, a lot of the passing is done as you go into the turns
00:14:18as you watch Little Al doing it.
00:14:20It's driving deep.
00:14:21The cars don't yaw.
00:14:23The drivers don't use an awful lot of brakes there.
00:14:25They just barely use the brakes.
00:14:27Moves for 2nd place as here comes Fittipaldi.
00:14:30Passed Boesel.
00:14:31And Emerson Fittipaldi picks up 2nd.
00:14:33So, Penske cars now run 1 and 2.
00:14:36And Little Al is on the move.
00:14:38A classic Little Al race where he starts deep in the field, 11th,
00:14:41and then comes on hard toward the middle of the race.
00:14:45So, Boesel falls backwards as Paul Tracy moves to the front of the field on the start.
00:14:51We'll be back after this message and a word from our ABC station.
00:14:58Back at the Miller Genuine Draft 200.
00:15:00We're seeing some great racing.
00:15:01Emerson Fittipaldi just snaps the lead away from Paul Tracy.
00:15:04And Penske cars 1, 2, and 3.
00:15:06Fittipaldi, Tracy, and Little Al.
00:15:08Little Al now working to the outside of Tracy.
00:15:11I have never seen a team fight as hard within itself as these three guys are going.
00:15:16Switching back and forth, sometimes once every lap.
00:15:19And just going all over the place.
00:15:21Passing the guys high and low.
00:15:22Paul, it's amazing.
00:15:23And already the three Penske cars have pulled away from the fourth place car,
00:15:27which is Jacques Villeneuve at the moment.
00:15:29They're four seconds up on Villeneuve.
00:15:32Let's go down pit side for a report on Raul Boesel.
00:15:35Here's Gary.
00:15:36Well, he started from the pole, but unfortunately with this changing weather conditions,
00:15:40the setup isn't working.
00:15:41They picked up a push.
00:15:42The car's not responding.
00:15:44They want yellow, of course, so they can make a change as soon as possible.
00:15:48They have to wait and hang on as best they can.
00:15:50Let's go to Jack.
00:15:51And, Gary, those changing weather conditions are exactly what Emerson Fedepauldi credits
00:15:55for the way he's running so well as compared to yesterday afternoon
00:15:59in the last practice session he told his crew,
00:16:02don't make many changes because I think the track will come to us.
00:16:05It'll get hot. It'll get greasy.
00:16:07He likes it just the way the car is right now.
00:16:10Jack, the car that the three Penske cars has just roared by is Bobby Rahal,
00:16:15who, of course, was so competitive at Indianapolis last week.
00:16:17Great drive, finished third today.
00:16:19He switched back to Honda power, not doing so well.
00:16:22We take a look at the running order after 24 miles.
00:16:25Fedepauldi still in front, followed by little Al and then Paul Tracy.
00:16:30Now, remember, as Jack suggested at the start,
00:16:32we're looking at a Penske car with an entirely different power plant.
00:16:36This is the Elmore D engine, not the Mercedes-Benz that ran so powerfully at Indianapolis.
00:16:41So the playing field is a bit more level, Bobby.
00:16:44Or, yes, or to explain it further, Paul,
00:16:46that the engine is very similar to the Ford,
00:16:48even though they're made by two different manufacturers.
00:16:51They're the same cubic inches, same lower pressure.
00:16:54Other than that, they're turning about the same RPM.
00:16:57It's a very level playing field, as you said.
00:16:59Level playing field, except it seems to be utterly dominated
00:17:03by these red and day-glo white cars of Penske.
00:17:07I mean, have you ever seen, Bobby, Penske so dominant?
00:17:11I mean, he's got cars running 1, 2, 3 and pulling away.
00:17:13Sam, for about 10 laps there, we couldn't even tell who was in first
00:17:17and who was in second for a while.
00:17:19They were passing so often.
00:17:20One of the things that you tend to forget
00:17:22when an engine is as powerful as the Mercedes was at Indianapolis
00:17:25is how really good the chassis is.
00:17:28And, of course, we've seen this Nigel Bennett-designed Penske chassis
00:17:31perform so very well throughout the season,
00:17:34winning at Long Beach, winning at Phoenix.
00:17:36And just so everybody knows, on the RPM,
00:17:38they're all turning about 13,000 to 13,500.
00:17:42Some up 13,500, but most of them have two gear in the transmission,
00:17:46one for what you call cruising.
00:17:48If there's no race like this, really a race now,
00:17:51they'll be running on low gear, just going like heck,
00:17:53probably turn 13,500.
00:17:55Continuing to watch the run at the front of the field.
00:17:58Remember that Emerson Fittipaldi made an uncharacteristic driving error
00:18:02late in the race, 16 laps to go at Indianapolis last week.
00:18:06That may be holding him a little out on the inside,
00:18:09Emerson on the outside.
00:18:11Well, look at all this traffic as they come onto the backside.
00:18:14Little Al down to the inside.
00:18:15They were three wide off the corner.
00:18:17But Fittipaldi threads his way in behind tail Bobby.
00:18:21Traffic makes so much difference at this particular time.
00:18:24Whoa!
00:18:25Little Al going way underneath there.
00:18:27And everybody else brought ammo down, and he got by.
00:18:30So, Allenser Jr. now picks up the lead of the race.
00:18:33A lot of those passes like that are gambles.
00:18:35Little Al didn't know until he came out of the turn
00:18:38that it was going to be green and clear underneath.
00:18:40Well, I tell you, Little Al used to wait for half distance
00:18:43or even later before he would take over the lead.
00:18:45He'd work his way up carefully.
00:18:47Not so today.
00:18:48This is very early in the race to see him burst into the lead.
00:18:52So, Allenser Jr. now has to be point man for the Penske team
00:18:55as they come through traffic.
00:18:58Remember that he's one of the four great drivers
00:19:00who won his first Oval IndyCar race right here.
00:19:03So, he has good memories of this place.
00:19:05Now, you see him move his groove right out.
00:19:07Just as soon as he got by ammo there,
00:19:09he moved out of full car and went to the same turn.
00:19:11They both come around Stefano Hansen and Adrian Fernandez.
00:19:15Allenser Jr. still having to handle traffic,
00:19:18which will be what we normally see throughout the afternoon,
00:19:22barring yellows on this course.
00:19:24On board now with Raul Boisel
00:19:27as he is battling with Robbie Gordon for fifth place.
00:19:31That's Gordon just ahead of him and to the right.
00:19:34Now, watch Gordon take a high, wide line going into this turn.
00:19:37See, he's way outside of where Raul is running
00:19:39and he stays out there the whole way through the turn.
00:19:42Yes, you know, he did that in Indianapolis, Sam.
00:19:44Do you remember what, coming off of number two,
00:19:46he kept telling the guys that Gordon was way high in his own groove?
00:19:49Well, he's doing the same thing here now.
00:19:51That's good and it's bad.
00:19:52He'll make a good groove out there if he stays there long enough
00:19:55and sometimes it's a sign of a good driver.
00:19:58Less room for error, though, Bobby, when you're out there?
00:20:00There's a lot of room right now for error,
00:20:02but he'll get it cleaned off pretty soon.
00:20:04That's fifth place, Robbie Gordon just ahead.
00:20:07Let's just ride with this car and listen to how he controls the throttle.
00:20:34That was Harold Moschetta. He just moved around.
00:20:36Now we move up to Robbie Gordon.
00:20:38And here we've got some telemetry for you.
00:20:40Again, we'll watch and ride.
00:20:53What's nice about this telemetry,
00:20:55you can see where the driver gets at full throttle.
00:20:58The 100% throttle over there shows you what he's doing in the turn, Paul,
00:21:02and what he does coming off.
00:21:04He's coming off like number two now.
00:21:06Down the straightaway, the full open throttle,
00:21:08all the way down.
00:21:09Look at the RPM up to about 12,800 there.
00:21:14So Robbie Gordon, as he works his way around,
00:21:16Michael Andretti was able to pull up on Raul Boisel
00:21:20and move past as well.
00:21:22Jack Arood, you have an update for us on Robbie?
00:21:24Well, Paul, it looks as if Robbie may get just a little more racy in the Valvoline car.
00:21:28He had a severe understeer problem.
00:21:30The car was pushing badly.
00:21:31But it seems that the track is coming to him.
00:21:33Derek Walker said he radioed in and said,
00:21:35thus far, it's getting better every lap.
00:21:38You ride back now with Nigel Mansell
00:21:40as we keep an eye on Michael Andretti
00:21:43and Raul Boisel.
00:21:44Line just ahead, there is Nigel
00:21:46as he tries to get around Michael.
00:21:48Oh, he's going to take him close to the wall with that one.
00:21:51Boy, that was a close one there.
00:21:52Michael didn't see him for a while, kept moving out.
00:21:54You can see Nigel getting a little nervous.
00:21:57Considerable rivalry between Nigel Mansell and Michael Andretti, of course,
00:22:01stemming from their incident on the first lap down in Australia
00:22:04at the beginning of the season.
00:22:06No love lost between those two drivers.
00:22:08Michael Andretti rides in 8th place,
00:22:10the last car on the leader lap.
00:22:12The leaders should be lining up just behind Michael here shortly.
00:22:15Nigel is 7th, then Raul Boisel in 6th.
00:22:18There they are all together as Nigel begins to challenge on Raul
00:22:21and they move around Mark Smith.
00:22:23Nigel, at last, having a really good race this year.
00:22:26He's had a couple of places, he's well off in the championship,
00:22:29but he hasn't really moved well through the traffic.
00:22:31He is now.
00:22:32You know, Sam, I think the deal, a lot of it,
00:22:34between Nigel and Michael is not bad feelings,
00:22:37except that Nigel is in the position with the same team
00:22:40where Michael used to be with.
00:22:42I think there's always just a slight amount of jealousy on things like that.
00:22:46But they respect each other and they're both,
00:22:48they both win in the same team,
00:22:50so that shows you that the team is really good a lot of ways.
00:22:52Well, I agree with you, Bobby.
00:22:54Last year, Nigel was very solicitous of Michael's troubles in Formula 1.
00:22:58He did everything he could to help him out with advice.
00:23:01Now, Nigel Mansell lines up on Raul Boisel.
00:23:04Just ahead of him is Jacques Villeneuve.
00:23:07Look at how much is going on in these cars.
00:23:09I mean, look at the steering here.
00:23:11A few changes to that steering wheel every few seconds.
00:23:14It's tough going, Paul.
00:23:20You can see Nigel is going clear down almost to the grass.
00:23:23He's using kind of a late apex.
00:23:25Some of the guys that go slower use an earlier apex.
00:23:28Michael Andretti has gone a lap down to the leaders,
00:23:31and now the leader, Al Unser Jr.,
00:23:33is pulling up behind Nigel Mansell as there goes Fittipaldi
00:23:38around Nigel.
00:23:42And this race is at its 42nd lap
00:23:45and has been blink green right from the go.
00:23:47Paul, remember at India Weekend Zone,
00:23:49the Penske cars were dominant there, too,
00:23:51but the other guys had the hope,
00:23:53the other drivers could hope
00:23:54that there would be a mechanical problem
00:23:56that would strike the Penske cars.
00:23:58There's less chance of that today, don't you agree?
00:24:02Al Unser Jr. continues to slice his way through this field,
00:24:06followed by his teammates Emerson Fittipaldi
00:24:09and Paul Tracy running in third.
00:24:11We'll be back with more from the Milwaukee Mines.
00:24:14We're back at Milwaukee.
00:24:16As you take a look at the interval standings,
00:24:18the Penske cars, first, second, and third,
00:24:20are the only cars on the lead lap.
00:24:22We're back now on a battle a bit down in the field
00:24:25as Michael Andretti closes on Raul Boisal.
00:24:28Jacques Villeneuve sits just ahead of him.
00:24:30He comes around Ari Leindeich.
00:24:33On board, Michael.
00:24:35Now, this is really a good shot
00:24:37because you can see Michael's car
00:24:40Now, this is really a good shot
00:24:42because you can see Michael's camera is on the wing right here.
00:24:45That's the tire going up and down.
00:24:47Milwaukee track is a little bit rough.
00:24:50They haven't repainted.
00:24:51It needs to be done.
00:24:53But it's the most beautifully shaped racetrack,
00:24:55probably the short racetrack in the world.
00:24:58Watching just ahead, Raul Boisal.
00:25:02As Michael takes it up to full cat
00:25:04and then right back out of it.
00:25:05Boisal, here in three and four,
00:25:07really dialed down low in the corner.
00:25:10He closes on Villeneuve.
00:25:12Now to the inside of Jacques.
00:25:15But what a change in the order of things
00:25:17from qualifying when Raul was on the pole
00:25:20and the Penskys were scattered through the pack
00:25:22to now they're running one, two, three
00:25:24and he is struggling.
00:25:26And Raul gets caught behind slower traffic
00:25:28and in doing so, Michael Andretti gets around.
00:25:31Now, he's lost his momentum
00:25:33but comes back up to speed.
00:25:34That's Hiroma Shusta just behind him.
00:25:38Also, as you can see up there,
00:25:41there's 148 laps to go.
00:25:43It's a 200-lap race.
00:25:44Take a look at Nigel Mansell and Robbie Gordon
00:25:46as they go side by side.
00:25:48This is a battle for fourth.
00:25:51And again, it's one of the few racetracks
00:25:53that you can really race side by side
00:25:55all the way around the track a lot of times.
00:26:01There's Robbie Gordon watching way out,
00:26:03not even down anywhere near
00:26:05where most of the other guys are running.
00:26:09New record attendance here on the mile,
00:26:1145,254 race fans enjoying this battle.
00:26:17Here's the look out of the back of Nigel Mansell's car
00:26:20as you see Gordon dropping back
00:26:22as he passes Brian Hurta.
00:26:24Gordon forced to an inside line.
00:26:26Mansell really struggling with the car
00:26:28but moving up place after place.
00:26:31The front of the field remains Al Unser Jr.,
00:26:33then Fittipaldi, then Paul Tracy.
00:26:35Nigel Mansell, red number one right there,
00:26:38rides in fourth place.
00:26:40Gordon in fifth, Michael Andretti in sixth.
00:26:43Here's the running order after 54 laps.
00:26:45The traffic is so bad sometimes,
00:26:47you can watch as the cars go by the front straightaway.
00:26:49The flagman just almost holds
00:26:51the move-over flag out constantly.
00:26:53The fast cars are awesome fast.
00:26:55The other guys, crazy fast.
00:26:57The fast cars are awesome fast.
00:26:59The other guys are getting lapped relatively pretty often.
00:27:02Remember Mansell's great drive here last year
00:27:04when he won his first oval race?
00:27:06He's having another great drive today.
00:27:08If it weren't for the Penskys,
00:27:10he'd be leading this race.
00:27:11Right now he's first in class.
00:27:13A lot of people thought the Mercedes engines,
00:27:15Sam, were carrying the Pensky cars in Indianapolis.
00:27:18But, you know, they had a pretty good year already.
00:27:21Remember little Al went long, did pretty easy.
00:27:24Paul Tracy, of course,
00:27:26or remember, of course, won Phoenix.
00:27:29And now here's Milwaukee.
00:27:30They're showing it isn't just the engine.
00:27:32The cars really do handle good.
00:27:34Bobby, let me suggest that maybe at Indianapolis,
00:27:36the Mercedes engine actually handicapped the Pensky team.
00:27:40Well, it certainly seemed to slow their turn speed down a little bit.
00:27:44But, Sam, they had the straightaway speed.
00:27:46And that's ever so important for passing in Indianapolis.
00:27:49Oh, there's no question about that.
00:27:50But you look at this race,
00:27:51and here they are running 1, 2, 3.
00:27:53It's an unbelievable demonstration of superiority.
00:27:59The runs on the miles are tornadoes
00:28:01as they just rip around these courses.
00:28:04Many of the fans call them bull rings.
00:28:06Oh, and the fans, there's so many here.
00:28:08It's such a good chance to talk to them
00:28:09before the start of the race.
00:28:11Everybody with an idea who might win the race
00:28:13so keenly informed, particularly in the wake of Indy.
00:28:16Everybody's kind of up to speed of what's going on here.
00:28:19Nigel Mansell inside of Mike Groff.
00:28:22Now, we're talking Honda power once again
00:28:24in both Ray Hall's car and in Mike Groff's car.
00:28:27Look at the gigantic crowd, though.
00:28:29They come over to the backside.
00:28:33Yeah, remember, Ray Hall in Indianapolis
00:28:35was in one of Roger Pensky's old one-year-old cars
00:28:38with Gilmore power.
00:28:40Whereas today, he's back in the Honda
00:28:42for Ian Groff, like his dad.
00:28:43And they're lacking in straightaway speed again,
00:28:46very much like they did.
00:28:47Let's go back with Bobby Ray Hall.
00:28:49On board again, Honda power here.
00:28:52And Ray Hall currently runs in 14th,
00:28:54tail Bobby just ahead.
00:28:5614th place.
00:28:57This has to be really tough for Ray Hall
00:28:59because Miller Brewing, his sponsor,
00:29:01this is their hometown.
00:29:02Obviously, a lot of people out here rooting for him.
00:29:04And after his great third at Indy last week,
00:29:06they expect great things.
00:29:08It's hard for people to understand
00:29:09what the difference in horsepower could mean.
00:29:11And suddenly, he's running in the back of the field
00:29:13instead of the front.
00:29:14But, you know, Sam, the Honda fans
00:29:16are gonna stick with him.
00:29:17Ray Hall, one good race driver.
00:29:20Miller's been sticking with him.
00:29:21They all realize that it can take a while to develop.
00:29:24The Honda's certainly gonna take a little while, too.
00:29:26I'll tell you, Bobby Ray Hall is one awesome driver.
00:29:29I hate to see him throw away the latter part of his career
00:29:32on technical problems.
00:29:33Although, if it pays off for him,
00:29:35it'll be fantastic, of course.
00:29:37He never makes a mistake.
00:29:38And remember Honda's history in Formula 1
00:29:42and how well, once they got the program together,
00:29:45the engine performed.
00:29:46I think the only exception that we see
00:29:49to engines working right away
00:29:50or taking one or two years to do
00:29:52is, of course, Roger Penske.
00:29:53He's the only guy that seems to be able to
00:29:56think up something and do it in a very short time.
00:29:59They're setting a record pace at 138.9 miles an hour.
00:30:05The record held by Michael Andretti is at 138 laps.
00:30:10Such a view that you see off the front of Ray Hall's car.
00:30:19Gives you the feeling of the speed
00:30:25that these guys are actually doing.
00:30:27Also gives you an idea of how much faster he is in the curves
00:30:39than the group of cars that he's catching.
00:30:40Look at that.
00:30:41Look how high that he's running right now.
00:30:43He isn't getting down to the bottom.
00:30:45Now, even when he was by himself,
00:30:47of course, he's passing the car now, Sam.
00:30:50Inside of Maschuska.
00:30:57Alongside Mark Smith and past him.
00:31:04Hall center, Raul Boisel is now two laps down
00:31:08to the leader, Al Unser, Jr.
00:31:09Nothing changes at the front of the field.
00:31:11It's still little Al Fittipaldi and Paul Tracy.
00:31:14And as we go up to the front of the field,
00:31:16Al Unser, Jr., he is due to be in the pits
00:31:19just any time now as they split.
00:31:21Coming around Marco Greco.
00:31:25And you know, Paul, as the race goes on,
00:31:27you notice some of the guys switch
00:31:29from running low to running high.
00:31:31This is because when you lay down a lot of rubber
00:31:33and clutch leak, that the track gets slippery.
00:31:36So they just hunt for dry spots.
00:31:37Just like we saw Robby Ray all a while ago
00:31:39going way out wide.
00:31:41Or we see Robby Gordon in the Cummins car
00:31:43going way out wide.
00:31:45Al Unser, Jr. trying to put his teammate
00:31:47Paul Tracy down a lap
00:31:49to show you just how powerful little Al is.
00:31:51But very shortly, he will head down pit road.
00:31:55And in fact, he's on his way right now.
00:31:58So Al Unser, Jr. on lap 67
00:32:00making his first pit stop of the day.
00:32:02And Jack LaRue waits for him.
00:32:04And remember, the pits are only 80 miles an hour.
00:32:07Now, Paul, what's going to be interesting to watch
00:32:09is they are going to go with sticker tires.
00:32:11Brand new tires.
00:32:13Checking the rest of Team Penske.
00:32:14They anticipate going to scuffs.
00:32:16All four tires being changed.
00:32:18They'll take on a full load of fuel.
00:32:20This should enable them to make this a two-stop race.
00:32:2413.1 seconds, gentlemen.
00:32:27Great stop for Team Penske.
00:32:29Little Al now in and out.
00:32:30Of course, Fittipaldi picked up the lead
00:32:32when little Al came in.
00:32:34Did you notice that little Al didn't come anywhere near
00:32:36killing his engine like he did in Indianapolis?
00:32:38These engines, they rub them up really high,
00:32:40the little bitty engines.
00:32:42So they just engage the clutch,
00:32:43and let the tires do the slipping.
00:32:45A little bitty engine, about 800 horsepower, right?
00:32:47Yeah, but it's only 160 cubic inches, roughly, Paul.
00:32:51That's considered really small in a passenger car today.
00:32:54Bigger than what I got on my moped, Bobby.
00:32:56A lot of horsepower.
00:32:58Little Al immediately back up to speed.
00:33:01Full fuel load, new tires, car feels quite different.
00:33:04He takes off again and starts passing cars
00:33:07just as he did before he stopped.
00:33:09It takes one lap.
00:33:10When they put on cold tires, it takes one lap
00:33:12to get the tires, what we call, seated back in
00:33:15so they feel good again.
00:33:17And that's what it takes little Al.
00:33:18And that's what it'll be for all of them
00:33:20when they put on the new tires.
00:33:22So now the leader of the race, Fittipaldi,
00:33:24is scheduled for his stop as he comes on the pit road.
00:33:27And there he is.
00:33:30And once again, Jack Arood is there to watch.
00:33:33Well, as we said, gentlemen,
00:33:35they are going to elect to go with scuffed tires
00:33:37as Emerson Fittipaldi, and now the fuel man
00:33:40stumbles, doesn't get the nozzle in.
00:33:42He finally gets it connected now.
00:33:43This could make a long stop under green flag conditions.
00:33:47As we said, they have gone for scuffed tires.
00:33:50Still now, fuel coming in.
00:33:53The time ticking away.
00:33:55This was costly as Paul Tracy cut him off coming in.
00:33:58Tracy's in for his stop now, guys.
00:34:00And Al Unser, Jr., you saw him
00:34:02reassume the lead of the race
00:34:04as Fittipaldi came into the pit.
00:34:06So the Penske cars are still running
00:34:07in the front of the field.
00:34:16And we wait, in fact, for most of the rest
00:34:18of the field to stop.
00:34:20Only the three leaders, the Penske cars
00:34:23and Dominic Dobson and Buddy Lazier
00:34:26have made stops thus far.
00:34:28So the Penskes appear to be playing
00:34:30a conservative game on fuel.
00:34:32Well, this changes often.
00:34:34You never know how Roger Penske's thinking
00:34:36is going to go, but conservative,
00:34:38he always is early in the races.
00:34:40It's later on.
00:34:42Now, when Penske's thinking of pit stops
00:34:44and everybody should follow through with it,
00:34:46you can see how his personality's going to change
00:34:48because he's thinking towards the latter part
00:34:50of the race now.
00:34:52You talk about the importance of the pit stop, though,
00:34:55that better pit stop by little Al
00:34:57has given him a 15-second lead
00:34:59over Emerson Fittipaldi.
00:35:01That's two-thirds of a lap.
00:35:08On board with Robbie Gordon,
00:35:09that fabulous view.
00:35:14Spencer Jr., Fittipaldi.
00:35:16When Paul Tracy stopped,
00:35:18Nigel Mansell moved into third,
00:35:20but Nigel has not yet stopped.
00:35:22Now let's see where Robbie Gordon,
00:35:23the Cummins car, is running compared.
00:35:25Look, now he's down.
00:35:26He's not running as high now,
00:35:28so it must have gotten a little bit slippery out there.
00:35:30You can watch.
00:35:31He's down close to the yellow line.
00:35:32Let's watch going into turn three now.
00:35:34Starts coming down a little bit.
00:35:37He's down a little bit below the yellow line,
00:35:40so you can see how all the drivers change
00:35:42as the track condition changes.
00:35:45Maturity showing in Robbie Gordon's approach.
00:35:47Last year, he had problems at the pit stop.
00:35:49He almost spun.
00:35:50Then he spun when he was battling with Greyhall.
00:35:52Really near the end of the race.
00:35:54So far today, a perfect race.
00:35:5775 laps into the record book
00:35:59for Alexander Jr.
00:36:00Green flag the entire way.
00:36:03You know, it is amazing, Paul,
00:36:05that we haven't seen any sort of a yellow flag.
00:36:07Everything has been flat out since the start,
00:36:10and we're not too far from being halfway there.
00:36:12Michael Andretti on the pit road now.
00:36:14He's in fifth place as he heads in
00:36:16for his first stop of the day.
00:36:23Four tires, on and off.
00:36:25Now, you notice another thing.
00:36:27Some of the cars will have
00:36:28what we call sticker tires on them
00:36:30that have never run before.
00:36:32Some of them will have steamed-in tires.
00:36:34If you watch with Michael here,
00:36:36you see those white little things going around?
00:36:38Those are stickers.
00:36:39Brand-new tires.
00:36:41Looks like they were dialing more wing end
00:36:43to the right front.
00:36:44It's actually a split wing up there, Bobby,
00:36:46and the outside section
00:36:48is what they appear to have done.
00:36:49Yeah, Paul, they really have
00:36:50four wings on the front,
00:36:52and what they're doing is
00:36:53he's pushing a little bit.
00:36:54At this time of the race,
00:36:55which is almost halfway,
00:36:57the track is getting slippery,
00:36:59so usually it pushes a little bit.
00:37:01Nigel Mansell is into the pits
00:37:03as Emerson Fittipaldi runs the fastest lap
00:37:05of the race at 146 miles an hour, Gary.
00:37:08Nigel Mansell hits the marks.
00:37:10We got a radio report
00:37:11saying that it's loose as a goose.
00:37:13He says he almost lost it on one occasion,
00:37:16so the crew now putting scuff tires on
00:37:18and, of course, servicing with fuel
00:37:20down off the jacks.
00:37:22And he's controlling 13 in a fraction of seconds.
00:37:25Excellent stop for the newmanhawks team.
00:37:27What they mean, Gary, is loose.
00:37:29They need the rear end that's loose.
00:37:31The car wants to spin out.
00:37:33The worst thing that a driver can have.
00:37:35If you notice, they didn't tighten the front wing
00:37:37or raise him up on that.
00:37:39They absolutely have to tighten the rear end down.
00:37:41Rumors continue to circulate
00:37:43that this man, Nigel Mansell, on the screen
00:37:45will be going to Formula 1
00:37:47this year to drive races
00:37:49that do not conflict with IndyCar races,
00:37:52possibly or probably for the Williams team.
00:37:54There are only rumors at this point,
00:37:56as far as we know,
00:37:57but he's driving a beautiful race here today, certainly.
00:38:00There is Jimmy Vassar,
00:38:02who drove a great race in Indianapolis,
00:38:04though he is struggling a bit here today.
00:38:06But Vassar is one of these young men
00:38:08that we really have to keep an eye on
00:38:10because, as Sam Posey suggested,
00:38:12anyone can win on one of these ovals,
00:38:14and Vassar would be a very good candidate.
00:38:16At the front of the field, though,
00:38:18it is Al Unser, Jr.,
00:38:19followed by Fittipaldi, Paul Tracy,
00:38:21and Robbie Gordon,
00:38:22then pole sitter Raúl Boissel.
00:38:27Al Unser, Jr. and IndyCar's best
00:38:30hit the streets of the Motor City.
00:38:32It's the ITT Automotive Detroit Grand Prix
00:38:35next Sunday on ABC.
00:38:40We're back on the Milwaukee Mile.
00:38:42Raúl Boissel and Robbie Gordon
00:38:44go side-by-side.
00:38:46Not a battle for position, though.
00:38:48They've been that way all the way
00:38:50around the racetrack, Paul.
00:38:51They may not even know
00:38:52whether they're in position for racing
00:38:54or whether they're just racing each other
00:38:56for the heck of it.
00:38:58Bois and the Indy 500
00:39:00as the two are side-by-side tonight on ABC.
00:39:02Watch America have fun
00:39:04on America's Funniest Hour.
00:39:06Then spend an hour with America's super couple,
00:39:08Lewis and Clark.
00:39:10And then an ABC miniseries event begins.
00:39:13The Kennedys of Massachusetts.
00:39:15It's all tonight here on ABC.
00:39:22Raúl Boissel.
00:39:24He runs in eighth place.
00:39:26Stephon Johansson lined up behind him.
00:39:28And then Jimmy Vassar breaks into the top ten.
00:39:33We'll give you a rundown on the entire field here.
00:39:35Al Unser, Jr., Fittipaldi, Paul Tracy.
00:39:37First, second, and third.
00:39:39Then Mansell, then Michael Andretti,
00:39:41then Brian Hurta in sixth.
00:39:43Then Boissel, Gordon, Johansson, and Vassar.
00:39:45That's the lineup.
00:39:47Only Unser, Jr., and Fittipaldi
00:39:49run on the same lap.
00:39:51There's Brian Hurta.
00:39:53A.J. Boit's car number 14.
00:39:55He's really doing a good job.
00:39:57You know, this is only his second IndyCar race,
00:39:59and he just literally
00:40:01looks like he was born and run here.
00:40:03I think Bois found him a good boy there, Paul.
00:40:05He's majoring in economics at Ohio State,
00:40:07and you would think, really,
00:40:09that he is a professor, a very scholarly,
00:40:11slight-looking young man,
00:40:13wears glasses.
00:40:15The antithesis of A.J. Boit,
00:40:17who takes everything so physically
00:40:19and is so buoyant.
00:40:21Brian Hurta, introverted, but he's a great racing driver.
00:40:23You know, Sam, he has a good tendency
00:40:25to listen to Boit.
00:40:27Boit's a very smart race driver.
00:40:29He knows an awful lot, and if he could
00:40:31transfer his knowledge over to a young man like this,
00:40:33I think it could really help him a lot.
00:40:39Brian Hurta.
00:40:41Sixth place. I think I said that
00:40:43Vossel and Gordon weren't going for position
00:40:45a few minutes ago.
00:40:47Not true, as you saw by the lineup.
00:40:49Vossel now runs in seventh,
00:40:51Gordon in eighth.
00:40:53Out of contact with one another.
00:40:55The Penske cars, Ballenger Jr. and Emerson
00:40:57Fittipaldi, the only two cars
00:40:59on the lead lap.
00:41:01Let's go pit side, Gary Gerald.
00:41:03Paul, an interested bystander in the Bobby Ray Hall pit
00:41:05as former Major League Baseball great
00:41:07and now to the Milwaukee Brewers.
00:41:09They retired his number last week.
00:41:11He's now retired, of course, and it's the first time
00:41:13because his baseball career is over
00:41:15that he's had a chance to be in the pits.
00:41:17He's a great race fan. He's cheering on Ray Hall,
00:41:19and he's enjoying his day here in Milwaukee
00:41:21now as a retired professional baseball athlete.
00:41:23Michael Andretti
00:41:25inside of Ari Leyendijk.
00:41:27Michael runs in fifth.
00:41:31Mansell is his competition ahead.
00:41:33How many stickers
00:41:35are on that car, do you think, Bobby?
00:41:37A quick quiz on Michael's car.
00:41:39I couldn't tell you, Sam, but there's a bunch of them
00:41:41anyway.
00:41:43Michael told me 88
00:41:45separate stickers.
00:41:47That's a budget all in its own.
00:41:49Now, Sam, is that 88
00:41:51different types of stickers or 88 in total?
00:41:53Don't press me too much
00:41:55on this one.
00:41:57102 on Nigel Mansell's car.
00:41:59Sorry you even got started
00:42:01with it.
00:42:03Peter Jr. in front.
00:42:05Let's go to the pits.
00:42:07Well, Paul, two interesting things
00:42:09during that first series of pit stops.
00:42:11It looks as if maybe Team Penske played it
00:42:13very close to the vest.
00:42:15They hit it early. Meanwhile,
00:42:17though they're a lap ahead of everybody else,
00:42:19the rest of the competition could stretch it
00:42:21into the 80-lap mark.
00:42:23They're getting pretty good fuel mileage.
00:42:25An update on one Penske driver
00:42:27that we talked about at the top of the show,
00:42:29your outside pole setter, Paul Tracy.
00:42:31He is encountering severe
00:42:33understeer, pushing problems
00:42:35specifically as he exits turn 2
00:42:37and exits turn 4.
00:42:39So
00:42:41Al Unser Jr., who picked
00:42:43up the lead from Fittipaldi
00:42:45after Fittipaldi picked it up from Tracy,
00:42:47continues his dominance
00:42:49here just like the Indianapolis
00:42:51500. The Miller Genuine
00:42:53Draft 200 continues. We'll be
00:42:55back after this message and a word
00:42:57from our ABC station.
00:43:01The Miller Genuine Draft
00:43:03200. Brought to you by
00:43:05American Honda, who's been making quality
00:43:07cars in America for the past 11 years.
00:43:09ACDelco Automotive Parts.
00:43:11ACDelco. It's like buying
00:43:13time. Craftsman.
00:43:15A line of 1,600 hand tools
00:43:17made in America guaranteed forever
00:43:19only at Sears and Wendy's.
00:43:21After 25 years,
00:43:23quality is still our recipe.
00:43:27We're back at the Miller Genuine
00:43:29Draft 200. Nothing changes
00:43:31in the order. Al Unser Jr. is still the leader
00:43:33as Robbie Gordon reaches up and pulls a
00:43:35fairway off the front of his helmet. The sun
00:43:37has come out here as we cross the
00:43:39104th lap, so officially
00:43:41it's a race, should it rain.
00:43:43But the indication is now that we'll have
00:43:45sunshine to the end of the run here today.
00:43:47And Jack LaRue, this has
00:43:49been a most remarkable run
00:43:51green to this point, but there's other
00:43:53facts as well. Well, it's incredible.
00:43:55I can't remember the last time that we could be
00:43:57down the halfway mark in an IndyCar race
00:43:59and nobody has dropped out
00:44:01of the event. All 26 starters
00:44:03continue running here at the Milwaukee Mile.
00:44:05I'll tell you what, down here on Pitt Road,
00:44:07there isn't a lot going on except for those
00:44:0919 and 20 second stops several
00:44:11laps ago. One other point we'd like to
00:44:13bring up, too, is one member of
00:44:15Stefan Johansson's Tony Bentenhausen team
00:44:17is not here at the Milwaukee Mile.
00:44:19Tona Eddington, who was injured at the Indianapolis
00:44:21Motor Speedway, is resting in her hospital
00:44:23at Methodist Hospital, and all
00:44:25IndyCar teams send their best wishes to Tona.
00:44:27Let's check in further down Pitt Road
00:44:29with Gary Gerald. Gary, what's going on there?
00:44:31Well, Jack, we also want to pass on our best
00:44:33wishes to Dan Torborg. He's known as
00:44:35Dashboard Dan. He's the electronics
00:44:37genius who works for Nigel Mansell.
00:44:39And unfortunately, after the 500
00:44:41last weekend, he was in an automobile accident in
00:44:43Chicago. Had to have surgery for
00:44:45removal of a blood clot earlier
00:44:47this week. He's going to be away from the scene.
00:44:49He has been one of the
00:44:51CAM, Championship Association of
00:44:53Mechanics' all-star team members in recent
00:44:55years, and he's sorely missed by
00:44:57Mansell and his crew, and I know
00:44:59he wishes he was here today as he watches
00:45:01Nigel try to catch those Fenske cars.
00:45:03On board now with Raul
00:45:05Moisel, Brian Hurtus sits
00:45:07just ahead.
00:45:09Jack, the most
00:45:11cars ever to finish one of
00:45:13the IndyCar races this year was
00:45:1519 at Phoenix, so we're
00:45:17seeing something. Your report, it's
00:45:19unprecedented to see so many cars running
00:45:21deep in the race. Well, Sam, I think it has to
00:45:23tell you something about how well-heeled
00:45:25a lot of these teams are becoming.
00:45:27You see people like Buddy Lazier beginning
00:45:29to show, Scott Sharp, Dominic Dobson.
00:45:31We've got a lot of very strong teams
00:45:33in competition, especially here at the
00:45:35Milwaukee Mile. Exactly. It's a very mature
00:45:37series at this point.
00:45:39I think we're seeing better racing
00:45:41right now than we have seen here at Milwaukee
00:45:43in our memories. It doesn't
00:45:45make any difference whether it's a leader
00:45:47or if it's clear back to the back.
00:45:49Raul Moisel now drops to the inside
00:45:51of Brian Hurta. Here's the battle for position
00:45:53as Moisel takes Hurta's
00:45:55seventh position away from him.
00:45:57That's Mario just ahead. Mario
00:45:59is running another two laps back in the run
00:46:01itself, but Hurta's not going to have
00:46:03any of this. He's going to stay right back in the
00:46:05fight. Now, sometimes that does
00:46:07a little wake-up call to the driver. Sometimes
00:46:09you run around there and you think you're going
00:46:11as fast as you can, and you haven't tried enough
00:46:13different grooves. Somebody passes you
00:46:15and you say, wow, I'll try his groove
00:46:17and it works better off him.
00:46:19Let's get an update on Brian Hurta from Gary.
00:46:21I'll tell you what, Paul. A.J.
00:46:23Foyt is like a caged lion here on
00:46:25pit wall. He's unhappy because Hurta
00:46:27in that battle, he says that Mario
00:46:29keeps chopping his rookie driver off
00:46:31and the fiery competitive
00:46:33sport spirit is very much in evidence
00:46:35down here as he stands on pit wall
00:46:37watching now for the field to come out of
00:46:39turn four. Well, you know,
00:46:41this is a race with incredible mental
00:46:43strain in it simply because there are so
00:46:45many cars still running. You've got the
00:46:47guys you're battling with and all the cars you've
00:46:49got to be laughing to. There's more
00:46:51cars on a small one-mile track
00:46:53than we're used to, and that's got to be tough for Hurta.
00:46:55Damn, this used to be considered
00:46:57a pretty big track, the mile track here
00:46:59at Milwaukee. Today's speed,
00:47:01as fast as these cars are, it's considered
00:47:03like you said, a small track. They come
00:47:05around so fast.
00:47:07Well, Mario won't be a problem for
00:47:09Brian Hurta anymore now. He's out
00:47:11and away from Mario,
00:47:13but he's still been broken off in his battle
00:47:15from Raul Boycell.
00:47:17I'm going to try and set it up so we can take
00:47:19a look just at the entire field as they
00:47:21come through for you. We'll keep an eye
00:47:23on Hurta. There he is
00:47:25on the backside.
00:47:29Going into turn three.
00:47:33Three and four.
00:47:37And back onto the homestretch.
00:47:40There goes Boycell through
00:47:42Mansell. Here comes Hurta. There's
00:47:44Bobby Rahal.
00:47:46Junkled up, comes through.
00:47:48There's Michael.
00:47:52Stephon Johanson.
00:48:04And there is Scott Goodyear.
00:48:06Scott Goodyear, of course, has had a
00:48:08trouble-plagued season, culminating
00:48:10in his nearly not being in the Indy
00:48:12500. And suddenly he rebounded
00:48:14to qualify fifth here.
00:48:16Terrific. And, of course, he ran second
00:48:18here for much of the race last year until
00:48:20he had problems. We thought maybe he was
00:48:22back on track, but he's not running
00:48:24well now. Once the green flag dropped, he
00:48:26went back in the pack. He's having trouble
00:48:28once again.
00:48:30They're having trouble. That team is just not clicking,
00:48:32Sam. They just have not
00:48:34looked good all season. And I
00:48:36don't think that Scott's a bad race driver.
00:48:38I think he's a very good one.
00:48:40Something is just not clicking in that team, though.
00:48:42Fernandez and Leyendijk move underneath
00:48:44Scott Goodyear there. There's Boycell.
00:48:46I think we can say that
00:48:48any driver that can win the Michigan
00:48:50500 and finish second
00:48:52to your nephew at
00:48:54Indy is a good racing driver. There's another
00:48:56problem there somewhere in that team.
00:48:58No changes at the
00:49:00front of the field. It's still little Al
00:49:02and Emerson Fittipaldi. The battle right now
00:49:04continues to revolve around
00:49:06Brian Hurta and Bobby Rahal.
00:49:08Now we ride for the second on
00:49:10Raul Boycell, who sits just in front
00:49:12of Hurta.
00:49:16Oh, he's running
00:49:18clear down to the bottom, Paul. Been doing
00:49:20that all day through 3 and 4.
00:49:24So as Raul Boycell now begins
00:49:26to overhaul Ari Leyendijk, we look
00:49:28to the front of the field, and it's still little
00:49:30Al and Emerson Fittipaldi, the
00:49:32first two cars.
00:49:36Well, next week here on ABC
00:49:38Sports, this man, Al Unser, Jr.,
00:49:40the Indianapolis 500 winner
00:49:42and IndyCar's best hit the streets of
00:49:44Motown. It's the ITT
00:49:46Automotive Detroit Grand Prix
00:49:48next Sunday at 2 o'clock Eastern,
00:49:501 Central and Pacific time right here
00:49:52on ABC Sports. So
00:49:54Al Unser, Jr. leads it. He is followed
00:49:56by Emerson Fittipaldi, who
00:49:58is trailing close behind. They are the only
00:50:00two on the lead lap, and Fittipaldi
00:50:02is beginning to close in on little
00:50:04Al. So we may see a battle here
00:50:06between the two Penske
00:50:08cars.
00:50:12Third place
00:50:14is Paul Tracy. Nigel Mansell
00:50:16sits back and forth, followed by
00:50:18Michael Andretti. Fittipaldi
00:50:20was as much as 14,
00:50:2215 seconds back. He's now
00:50:24in the same shot, so to speak.
00:50:26You see him there.
00:50:28The most remarkable thing
00:50:30is we have gone now 125
00:50:32miles of the 200,
00:50:34and we have been green flag all the way.
00:50:36The first pit stop's
00:50:38already completed, of course.
00:50:40Though an interesting difference between
00:50:42the stops made by the Penske cars
00:50:44and those made by the rest of the field.
00:50:46The Penske cars seem to come in very early.
00:50:48It's obvious that the settings
00:50:50that these two drivers have now
00:50:52favor Emerson Fittipaldi, whereas in the
00:50:54first segment, before the first pit stops,
00:50:56they favored Al Unser, Jr.
00:50:58As we watch the lead
00:51:00and the battle at the front of the race, let's go to
00:51:02Gary Gerald. Paul, quick follow-up. We mentioned
00:51:04in the open that Dobson had difficulties
00:51:06in the warm-up session this morning. They had to
00:51:08rob a lot of parts off the spare car,
00:51:10and then, of course, an untested set-up, and they
00:51:12went on the track. It's not been a good day.
00:51:14The car's not handled well. He's currently
00:51:16in 16th place. His teammate Scott
00:51:18Sharp runs 12th. Let's go to Jack.
00:51:20Gary, you may be wondering what has happened
00:51:22to Jacques Villeneuve after qualifying
00:51:24in the second row. Checking in with Barry Green,
00:51:26he tells us, right from the beginning,
00:51:28the car has been extremely loose.
00:51:30They haven't been able to solve the problem,
00:51:32so he has to battle with it. In the interim,
00:51:34Al Unser, Jr.'s team
00:51:36is getting ready to service him for what
00:51:38should be the final time, and once again,
00:51:40gentlemen, they are going to go with sticker
00:51:42tires. Well, again, they're
00:51:44also going to do what Pinsky's figure
00:51:46tells them, where he's going to lose the least amount
00:51:48of time, Jacques. One of the things that
00:51:50Pinsky doesn't want to do, if he can help it,
00:51:52is bring somebody in and have them go back
00:51:54out in traffic. He would rather bring them
00:51:56in clean, just like he is right now with
00:51:58Little Al. So Al Unser, Jr.,
00:52:00the leader of the race, is on the pit road.
00:52:02129th lap,
00:52:04and he elects
00:52:06to make a stop, Jacques.
00:52:08And they go to work, the Pinsky team,
00:52:10so methodical, making the changes.
00:52:12This should be, as we said,
00:52:14their final lap, their final pit stop.
00:52:16Taking on a full load
00:52:18of 40 gallons of methanol.
00:52:20They've got it, and they're away in
00:52:2212 seconds. Well, that was a
00:52:24good stop for your last stop.
00:52:26The fuel in the tank is not really very
00:52:28high, so they really did a good one on that.
00:52:30Most critically, though, no apparent
00:52:32chassis changes, right, Jacques?
00:52:34Sam, they haven't
00:52:36made any major or minor chassis
00:52:38changes that we've been able to see
00:52:40in either of their two stops. And I was
00:52:42very fascinated that of all the Pinsky cars,
00:52:44they're the only ones that have elected
00:52:46each and every stop to go with sticker
00:52:48tires. Seems to me that maybe Jerry
00:52:50Brion saved their guys,
00:52:52their special tires, for race
00:52:54day. You know, you're only allowed so many sets of
00:52:56tires during the course of a weekend.
00:52:58And now, ever since Fittipaldi is about
00:53:00to put his car on the pit road for
00:53:02service.
00:53:04We watched Fittipaldi, who picked up the lead
00:53:06from Alonso Jr.
00:53:08One thing you gotta keep in mind,
00:53:10that towards the end of the race,
00:53:12it's really important to have new tires.
00:53:14Now, Pinsky's pitting early,
00:53:16and it's all good now because he's keeping his drivers
00:53:18out of traffic and all, which I think is all good,
00:53:20but they won't have as good a tire
00:53:22towards the end of the race as some of the others will.
00:53:24Let's go back to the Pinsky pits
00:53:26and check. Unconfirmed
00:53:28reports, gentlemen, that Emerson Fittipaldi
00:53:30might have been experiencing a slight
00:53:32understeer problem. Rick
00:53:34Reinemann working on the right side.
00:53:36A momentary problem with getting the lug
00:53:38nut off, but he completes his task.
00:53:40The longest part of the stop, taking on
00:53:42fuel, he does it in 12.6
00:53:44seconds. And again, no obvious
00:53:46error in the hammock changes to the car on that stop.
00:53:48That slight push, though,
00:53:50apparently was the fast setup
00:53:52for that last segment of the race because he was
00:53:54closing in throughout. And you can see little
00:53:56Al come right by Emil as
00:53:58he, as Emil came out of the pit, so
00:54:00they're back in about the same position
00:54:02that they came in a little while ago, and their
00:54:04pit stops are about equal also.
00:54:06As he flashes over the line this time,
00:54:08Alonso Jr. will be scored as
00:54:10the leader of the race, and to this point,
00:54:12only Penske cars have
00:54:14led in the Miller Genuine Draft 200.
00:54:16And look at that. Even with a full
00:54:18fuel load, little Al was able to outrace
00:54:20Robbie Gordon, who's approaching
00:54:22a pit stop and whose car should, at this point,
00:54:24be faster. But of course, Sam,
00:54:26the new tires are always a lot
00:54:28faster. Milwaukee, you can
00:54:30notice they're going out on sticker tires.
00:54:32It really feels good, but that goes away in about
00:54:34ten laps. But does
00:54:36this tell us something about what's happening
00:54:38on the race course and how slick it might
00:54:40be? Michael Andretti's
00:54:42race record at 138 miles
00:54:44an hour is still
00:54:46not approached. It was early,
00:54:48but right now they're only averaging
00:54:50136 even. Is that
00:54:52the rule changes, or is the track slowing
00:54:54down? I think the track is slowing down,
00:54:56and I think the traffic has an awful lot to do
00:54:58with it, Paul. There's not very many cars
00:55:00that are out of this race so far,
00:55:02and you never see cars out of traffic.
00:55:04Every lap,
00:55:06everybody is in some sort of traffic.
00:55:08Well, of course, little Al
00:55:10leads the championship by a whopping
00:55:1220 points going into this race.
00:55:14The last time the man that won
00:55:16Indy went on to win the championship
00:55:18was 1989, when Emerson
00:55:20Fittipaldi won it. Can he
00:55:22sustain it? Heard he's got some problems
00:55:24in the pits. He stalled it as he tried to
00:55:26get away. There's a rookie
00:55:28problem, one he won't make more than twice.
00:55:30Well, he certainly
00:55:32probably won't ever make
00:55:34that problem very many times, Paul, but
00:55:36it has happened to everybody. I mean,
00:55:38we watched the finest up-and-stall engine.
00:55:40If everybody just could imagine,
00:55:42these cars, until the blower pressure kicks in,
00:55:44just don't have but about
00:55:46250 horsepower, so it's easy
00:55:48to stall them. You have to just
00:55:50really romp the gas down
00:55:52and let that clutch just go
00:55:54and slip and just go for it.
00:55:56Aluncer Jr. in a
00:55:58fight for the lead.
00:56:07Little Al with
00:56:09Fittipaldi two seconds just
00:56:11behind him. Closing, of course,
00:56:13on Tracy.
00:56:17And you see the traffic
00:56:19problem again. Little Al would have liked to have gotten
00:56:21by Tracy right then to put him
00:56:23down another lap, but
00:56:25Michael Andretti was right in the way. Traffic is
00:56:27really a problem here again.
00:56:29Now Little Al gets his way
00:56:31down inside of Tracy, continues
00:56:33the pursuit of Michael Andretti.
00:56:36Now once Paul Tracy knew that Little Al was
00:56:38there, he would have let him go. That would be good
00:56:40teamwork.
00:56:42Paul Tracy appears to
00:56:44be determined to get through this race
00:56:46without a mistake. He was in the doghouse
00:56:48at Indy after he made that mistake
00:56:50the day before qualifying. He had trouble
00:56:52in the race, couldn't earn his way
00:56:54out back into contention, and I remember
00:56:56last year when he had that fine drive
00:56:58at Portland, which is just two races
00:57:00away, into third. That's what ignited
00:57:02Tracy's big winning streak, so he needs
00:57:04a cautious race here today. That's Paul Tracy
00:57:06right there in number three, and he's always
00:57:08fast. 139
00:57:10laps complete back of route.
00:57:12Well, Paul, just what Sampozy was saying
00:57:14was absolutely correct. The strategy for
00:57:16Team Penske right now, as this race
00:57:18has unfolded, is to allow Paul
00:57:20Tracy to have an error-free
00:57:22afternoon. They think he's solidly
00:57:24in third place. They aren't going to make any
00:57:26major changes in his final stop.
00:57:28He has a slight understeer, but they
00:57:30said, let him get to the checkered flag
00:57:32and get a race under his belt. That'll
00:57:34help his confidence even more than if he
00:57:36tried to get racy for second position.
00:57:40Once again, the Penske
00:57:42cars took their stops ahead
00:57:44of the rest of the field. Hunter Jr.
00:57:46and Fittipaldi have both completed
00:57:48theirs. Paul Tracy has yet to make
00:57:50his second and final stop of the day.
00:57:52We are looking at the possibility
00:57:54of a one, two,
00:57:56three sweep for the
00:57:58Penske team. There's just one Indianapolis
00:58:00who had the pole at Indianapolis
00:58:02and who won Long Beach and Phoenix
00:58:04before that. Right now, they look
00:58:06unbeatable. Still got about
00:58:0835, 37 laps to go, though,
00:58:10Sam. Remember that.
00:58:12Al Unser Jr. has now picked up the point,
00:58:14the extra point for leading the most
00:58:16laps here today. We have run
00:58:18141 laps
00:58:20and every one of them under
00:58:22the green flag. Final stop still to
00:58:24come for much of the field.
00:58:30This Ford Fact is brought
00:58:32to you by Ford and your Ford dealer.
00:58:34Have you driven a Ford lately?
00:58:36Over the last few
00:58:38seasons, we've seen the emergence of
00:58:40the transverse gearbox in IndyCarRacing.
00:58:42What do we mean by transverse?
00:58:44If we take a look at a gear stack, it used
00:58:46to hang off the back of the car in a longitudinal
00:58:48manner. Now, it's called
00:58:50a transverse gearbox because it's mounted
00:58:52transversely. But most importantly,
00:58:54it's placed ahead of the rear axles.
00:58:56That really helps move the weight on the
00:58:58car forward, helps specifically in
00:59:00slow speed corners. That's called
00:59:02a dynamic advantage. Now, what we
00:59:04also have is an aerodynamic advantage.
00:59:06It's much smaller back here.
00:59:08The all-important air that comes underneath
00:59:10the car, out of those tunnels,
00:59:12really helps in this area for increased
00:59:14downforce. In the old days, it took
00:59:16maybe 30 minutes to change gears.
00:59:18With this system, it takes two or
00:59:20three hours. You do lose some time in
00:59:22the pits, but out on the racetrack, it's a big
00:59:24advantage.
00:59:27We're back at the Miller Genuine
00:59:29Draft 200, where Al Unser Jr.
00:59:31is the leader of the race. His teammate
00:59:33Emerson Fittipaldi runs in second.
00:59:35Their teammate, Paul Tracy,
00:59:37is in third. And then
00:59:39Nigel Mansell, followed by
00:59:41Michael Andretti and Robbie
00:59:43Gordon. Those are the top six
00:59:45here. Al Unser Jr.
00:59:47is making child's play of
00:59:49the rest of the field.
00:59:51He is running a second ahead of
00:59:53his teammate, Emerson Fittipaldi,
00:59:55and a full lap ahead of
00:59:57everybody else in the field. And matter of
00:59:59fact, two laps ahead of most
01:00:01of the others in the field.
01:00:03He's been able to stay within about one to three seconds
01:00:05of little Al all the time.
01:00:07I think what this is doing is working
01:00:09itself up to be one heck of
01:00:11a good charge for the latter part of the race.
01:00:13I think probably what happened is
01:00:15Emerson really trying to save his tires,
01:00:17and you can bet that little Al knows
01:00:19it from the run right to the finish.
01:00:21Of course, Bobby, the consequence of little Al
01:00:23staying ahead of Emerson in terms
01:00:25of the championship is that he will extend
01:00:27his 20-point lead
01:00:29even further and become even
01:00:31more of a favorite to win
01:00:33the championship. All right, let's go back
01:00:35in the field now, take a look
01:00:37at some of those others battling. Here
01:00:39is Buddy Lazear. Very
01:00:41likable young man, great skier.
01:00:43He runs right now in 19th,
01:00:45but he has been keeping his nose
01:00:47clean for most of the races this year
01:00:49and is beginning to carve out
01:00:51a name for himself in IndyCar racing,
01:00:53just like his dad. You know, Paul,
01:00:55he missed the show at Indianapolis,
01:00:57but he got into a good car, the
01:00:59Hamilton car, late in the month.
01:01:01I know the boy, I know the team.
01:01:03If he'd have had one more day,
01:01:05there's no doubt in my mind
01:01:07they blew an engine just as he got in it.
01:01:09If he'd had one more day, he would have made the race,
01:01:11and that's so important to his career.
01:01:13We've just gone past
01:01:15the three-quarter point in the race
01:01:17where it lapped 154,
01:01:19and still, every car that started
01:01:21is still running.
01:01:23Let's look up in the field now.
01:01:25Running in 15th position, there he is,
01:01:27the Pennzoil car of Tao Fabi.
01:01:29Tao, of course, started 10th,
01:01:31and it looked as if they might have finally
01:01:33found the handle there. Remember that
01:01:35this is the Jim Hall-owned car,
01:01:37Jim Hall, whose teams have won at Indianapolis,
01:01:39who dominated the Can-Am sports car
01:01:41series years ago with the famous
01:01:43Chaparral. Tao Fabi, who took
01:01:45this series by storm, winning
01:01:47five races back in 1983.
01:01:49Somehow, this mixture
01:01:51has not come together in a potent
01:01:53way this year yet. It may
01:01:55still. And that's one of the Reinhardt cars,
01:01:57Sam.
01:01:59So Tao Fabi, in 1983,
01:02:01was a rookie pole sitter,
01:02:03and he's a proven IndyCar winner.
01:02:05We have three types of cars here. We have
01:02:07the Lola, of course, which has been the popular
01:02:09type. We have the new one that's a Reinhardt,
01:02:11and, of course, the cars that are leading
01:02:13the race, the Finske cars.
01:02:15They have chemistry
01:02:17in that team that just, for some reason,
01:02:19does not add up to the ingredients
01:02:21of the people in the team.
01:02:23They should be a front-runner, and they're not,
01:02:25and no one understands why, and I think
01:02:27everybody, even some of their competitors,
01:02:29feel badly about it.
01:02:31No battles anywhere in the field right now
01:02:33as Nigel Mansell
01:02:35from fourth place comes in for his stop, Jerry.
01:02:37Boy, Paul, what a difference a year makes.
01:02:39Remember a year ago, it was Nigel
01:02:41who won this race in the dramatic restart
01:02:43over Raul Boycell.
01:02:45Today, he started ninth, but this team right now
01:02:47frankly says, we're running for first
01:02:49in class, and that's how dramatically
01:02:51the Finske team has him covered.
01:02:53This was a great stop, 12 and a half seconds.
01:02:55And, Gary, the yellow comes out as
01:02:57Mansell comes into the pits for that piece of
01:02:59debris out on the racecars. Our first
01:03:01yellow of the day, so
01:03:03last year's run at Nazareth still
01:03:05remains our last yellow-free race.
01:03:07And the kart safety team,
01:03:09IndyCar's right there.
01:03:11Many years ago, Paul, I watched
01:03:13Bill Waukee run from start to finish
01:03:15and Mike Mosley won it.
01:03:17Never a yellow flag. And I'm
01:03:19starting to think, without that little piece of debris
01:03:21on the track, we might have had another one
01:03:23just like it. 1982, that was.
01:03:25So, on the 157th
01:03:27race lap,
01:03:29the leader, Al Unser Jr., slows
01:03:31down, and that's going to give a lot of cars
01:03:33an opportunity to stop. Here is
01:03:35Robbie Gordon in for his stop.
01:03:37Did you see all the smoke coming off his brakes
01:03:39as they came in on the Cummins car? He really
01:03:41had them smoking and hot there.
01:03:43Avalanche Cummins car.
01:03:45Woo-hoo!
01:03:47Let's go to Jack Aroon. And, guys,
01:03:49we were trying to tell you that what happened is he
01:03:51started to come out of the pits. He stalled the engine.
01:03:53They managed to carry the forward momentum
01:03:55and they were able to get it re-fired.
01:03:57Also, they are continuing to
01:03:59chase the handling. They were going
01:04:01down on the front wing.
01:04:05So, now, the rest of the
01:04:07field under this yellow, which shouldn't take
01:04:09that long as Johnny Rutherford driving
01:04:11the PPG Pace car. We watch
01:04:13Michael Andretti making his stop.
01:04:15Again, routine, and they have time here.
01:04:17And this comes just
01:04:19ideally for most of the cars in the field.
01:04:21You can see he's got sticker tires
01:04:23on him. Watch that white just flashing around the right
01:04:25front there. Brand new tires.
01:04:27The blend line here
01:04:29is just beyond the exit of the pits.
01:04:31Here is Bobby Rayhaw coming out.
01:04:33Remember, passing is
01:04:35allowed in the pits.
01:04:37But the speed limit in the pits,
01:04:39again, is only 80 miles an hour.
01:04:41That's from the entrance of the pit to the
01:04:43exit. And then they can go as fast as they want.
01:04:45Roll, boy, sell. Mario
01:04:47Andretti. Both head back
01:04:49to join the pack
01:04:51that is beginning to form now
01:04:53behind Johnny Rutherford.
01:04:55Al Unser, Jr., the first in that line.
01:04:57And Emerson
01:04:59Fittipaldi will be able to close in
01:05:01right behind his teammate.
01:05:03Paul, remember when we ran
01:05:05the last time on a mile at Phoenix International
01:05:07Raceway and we had those terrible
01:05:09problems during caution? First
01:05:11the Villeneuve and the
01:05:13accident with Jacques Villeneuve when
01:05:15I thought he was going to cut a car in
01:05:17half. And then, of course, Michael Andretti.
01:05:19Here's what Team Penske has
01:05:21devised. They have a small light
01:05:23on the dashboard of their cars now
01:05:25that when the caution comes out,
01:05:27they can turn the light on
01:05:29from the pits. They can send a signal
01:05:31to their drivers to back out of the throttle.
01:05:33Today, this was the first time
01:05:35they've had to use it. It worked quite well.
01:05:37You know, that's such a good idea. I'm surprised
01:05:39they just don't write that into the rules. And maybe
01:05:41Nigel Bennett, the chief engineering designer
01:05:43for that team, will, in fact, try to
01:05:45work that into the rules for next year.
01:05:47Now, remember, little Al right there and Emerson
01:05:49right behind him have no cars in between
01:05:51them. We're going to go back to green pretty quick
01:05:53here. Now, their tires will have been
01:05:55cooled off a little bit because of the yellow flag.
01:05:57You're really going to see now
01:05:59who, between the two, has the fastest
01:06:01car. Ready to go back to
01:06:03green flag racing on the 161st
01:06:05lap. Oh, little Al
01:06:07making Emerson slow down. You see Emerson
01:06:09trying to get a run on him, and little Al
01:06:11slowed up. A lot
01:06:13of tactics being played out. Look at how slowly
01:06:15they're going right now. Little Al wants to
01:06:17be able to pace back to the green at his own
01:06:19speed. By the way, now we do
01:06:21have a potential of rain
01:06:23just to the west of us here. The question
01:06:25is, will it pass over the track or
01:06:27will it miss us? We'll keep an eye out.
01:06:2939 laps to go as we're ready to go back to
01:06:31green flag racing, and here we go.
01:06:33The green flag comes out again.
01:06:35♪♪
01:06:37♪♪
01:06:39♪♪
01:06:41If Minnipaldi
01:06:43has a chance, this is it.
01:06:45♪♪
01:06:47Remember, he can
01:06:49shoot off a little Al right there.
01:06:51See where little Al is?
01:06:53He gets his braking by what little Al
01:06:55is doing in his braking.
01:06:57Is Minnipaldi, Bobby, in a position
01:06:59of advantage right now because he's
01:07:01chasing? Very definitely because
01:07:03number one, little Al's tires, all of them
01:07:05build up a little bit, but for example,
01:07:07little Al goes down, makes a slight mistake.
01:07:09Emo has that distance right
01:07:11there, as you see, to cure his so he
01:07:13doesn't make the same one. That's
01:07:15race craft, though, what little Al did there
01:07:17on that start. He knew he wanted
01:07:19to control the restart, not have
01:07:21Emo catch him. Remember Emerson
01:07:23just one week ago
01:07:25in battle with Al Hunter Jr., then
01:07:27leading the race.
01:07:29Slight mistake, Minnipaldi into the wall.
01:07:31Remember these two at Indianapolis when they
01:07:33battled. They battled
01:07:35there, and they're battling again here.
01:07:37They may both run for the Penske team,
01:07:39but this is a pure race between them. We should
01:07:41understand that there are no team orders
01:07:43that determine who's going to win this race.
01:07:45Absolutely, Stan.
01:07:47Penske does not do that.
01:07:49We know at times that he tries to do it for a
01:07:51championship at the end. This is not
01:07:53championship time. This is race time.
01:07:55Well, this is an amazing fact. Both these men
01:07:57have won 21
01:07:59IndyCar races.
01:08:01So this is the rubber match between them, folks.
01:08:03They've each won 21.
01:08:05They're going to display the black flag
01:08:07for Jocko Lev. He passed
01:08:09Jimmy Vassar on that restart, and so
01:08:11they'll bring him in for a stop-and-go
01:08:13penalty. He was running in eighth
01:08:15place. Really hurts on a track
01:08:17like this because he can't do the stop-and-go
01:08:19without losing a lap.
01:08:21We watch the lead of the race.
01:08:23Let's go back. This is
01:08:25Robbie Gordon. He runs in fifth place.
01:08:27Nigel Mansell is just ahead.
01:08:31He's back up
01:08:33running the high groove again.
01:08:35Look at Michael come underneath there.
01:08:37That's really close.
01:08:39Let's go pit side and check.
01:08:41Well, Paul, Derek Walker's radio
01:08:43to Robbie Gordon that the closing weather
01:08:45may shorten this race, and he knows
01:08:47that he has a shot at Nigel Mansell
01:08:49for position. He told his young charge,
01:08:51go for it now. Don't hold anything back.
01:08:55You saw Michael come right around
01:08:57and move into fifth place around
01:08:59Robbie Gordon. Villeneuve has made
01:09:01his stop-and-go penalty now.
01:09:03Often the mechanics or the team leaders
01:09:05tell the guys what to do, but sometimes
01:09:07they just can't do it. Sometimes they're already
01:09:09going as fast as they can.
01:09:11I still find this astounding.
01:09:13168 laps complete,
01:09:15and every car that started
01:09:17is still running.
01:09:19Boy, there's a tribute to the crews,
01:09:21the engineers, and the mechanics that labor
01:09:23long hours over these cars, and remember,
01:09:25they just came off of the grueling
01:09:27month of May in Indianapolis. Boy, they're
01:09:29well prepared.
01:09:31Well, it shows you that the whole series
01:09:33is just doing well on the
01:09:35engines and the transmission, to think
01:09:37that they haven't had an engine or a
01:09:39transmission problem today.
01:09:41It's pretty something. And yellow
01:09:43three only. Obviously not a
01:09:45critical part off a race car,
01:09:47because everybody's still going.
01:09:51Michael Andretti
01:09:53knows that Mantle's up there, and he
01:09:55has a chance. There's a look
01:09:57back from Mantle.
01:09:59You can see when you're on board with Michael,
01:10:01it takes something to hold the helmets up.
01:10:03Between a helmet and a driver's head,
01:10:05a lot of Gs, of course, really make their neck
01:10:07tired if they don't have something to hold it up.
01:10:09170 laps
01:10:11now complete in the Miller Genuine
01:10:13Draft 200. Al Unser, Jr.,
01:10:15we've got a car in trouble.
01:10:17Yellow will come out.
01:10:19Stephon Johansson.
01:10:21Wow.
01:10:23The string finally broke.
01:10:25Second yellow of the day. Obviously,
01:10:27Stephon is all right. He was
01:10:29running 13th at the time of the incident.
01:10:33So Stephon Johansson
01:10:35walks away from the first
01:10:37real incident of the day
01:10:39in the Miller Genuine Draft 200
01:10:41on the Milwaukee Mile.
01:10:43We'll be back with more after this message
01:10:45and a word from our ABC station.
01:10:51We talked about the great history here at Milwaukee.
01:10:53Well, of course, that great history has resulted
01:10:55in a very abrasive, a very bumpy track
01:10:57surface that they've worked on throughout the
01:10:59years, and that was a concern for Goodyear.
01:11:01They came here with a brand-new race tire,
01:11:03a slight construction change over what
01:11:05they've used in the past at Milwaukee
01:11:07because the surface is so abrasive.
01:11:09That tire has held up beautifully from what we've
01:11:11seen after the first two and the only
01:11:13scheduled pit stops of the day.
01:11:15Part of the problem is that there are
01:11:17places on the front straightaway where it's been
01:11:19grooved, and then there are places where they
01:11:21tried to grind it down to make it smoother,
01:11:23and so you get contrasting spots where you can
01:11:25put a rear tire in a grooved section
01:11:27and a rear tire on the opposite side can be on a smooth
01:11:29section. That creates tremendous stress,
01:11:31not only on the tire, but the back part of the car.
01:11:33And thus far, from all reports we've had
01:11:35and the fact that only, what, one driver has
01:11:37fallen out of this race, everybody's doing a remarkable job.
01:11:39A truly incredible job.
01:11:41That one driver, of course,
01:11:43Stephon Johanson, the reason for this
01:11:45yellow, as the IndyCar
01:11:47safety teams get the
01:11:49track clean and ready to go.
01:11:51175 laps are
01:11:53complete. And Paul, while Gary was talking
01:11:55about the tires and being hard on the rear
01:11:57ends, so everybody knows, here at Milwaukee
01:11:59they run what they call a solid axle
01:12:01across the back, the same as they would
01:12:03for Milwaukee, not like a road course
01:12:05where they would be running limited steps.
01:12:07Alright, let's take a look now, how they
01:12:09line up behind Johnny Rutherford and the BPG
01:12:11pace car. There's Fittipaldi
01:12:13and Allenser Jr., with Allenser Jr.
01:12:15in front.
01:12:17We're looking, really, for Michael Andretti
01:12:19and Nigel Mansell, that group.
01:12:21There's Michael.
01:12:23Robbie Gordon should be
01:12:25in here, right behind. That will be a battle
01:12:27when we come back to green. Bobby Rahal
01:12:29will be just behind that battle,
01:12:31as will Raul Boisel,
01:12:33and there is Mansell. The entire
01:12:35field looking for the one car that's
01:12:37falling out. Just imagine that,
01:12:39with only about 24 laps to go.
01:12:41Rahal, we're on board with him now,
01:12:43he's running seventh, he's having another
01:12:45great performance at the driving.
01:12:47They're having trouble getting
01:12:49the car of Stephan Johansson
01:12:51off of the course,
01:12:53because it was locked in gear, and so now
01:12:55they're going to have to pick it up with the
01:12:57full boom wrecker and get it off.
01:12:59That's the race summary after 173 laps.
01:13:01Let's go pit side.
01:13:03Jack Arood is with Richard Buck,
01:13:05Little Al's crew chief.
01:13:07And Richard, so far, things seem to be going your way.
01:13:09Why have you elected to go with sticker tires
01:13:11on every stop?
01:13:13Well, just through all the tests that we've done here,
01:13:15we didn't have really a heat problem,
01:13:17but the track is so abrasive right now,
01:13:19we wanted the maximum amount of rubber we could
01:13:21on the tire. Now we get down to the final
01:13:23laps, and it's a reverse of the situation
01:13:25you were in at the Indianapolis 500.
01:13:27Any thoughts or anything you've said to Little Al?
01:13:29Uh, well, I mean, you know,
01:13:31he's been in racing a long time. I mean, the smart
01:13:33thing to do is just, uh, let's not stick either
01:13:35of them in the fence. Um, uh, we've got a long
01:13:37championship ahead of us here, and we're just out there to collect
01:13:39points, you know. Paul?
01:13:41Well, Richard Buck will watch his
01:13:43driver, Al Unser, Jr.
01:13:45There's Johnny Rutherford, the
01:13:47PPG Pace car,
01:13:49as we're getting reports of some
01:13:51sprinkles
01:13:53in the area, but not yet on
01:13:55the track. You can bet that
01:13:57Little Al is not thinking the same way
01:13:59that Richard Buck is. Let's go to
01:14:01Gary Gerald. Well, Tony Bentonhausen
01:14:03stands here at pit entrance, and
01:14:05you had a problem earlier that affected
01:14:07your radiator and the temperatures, and that may have
01:14:09led to that motor going away, I understand.
01:14:11Yes, and Al, you match aluminum Penske
01:14:13all day long. The temperature after about 60
01:14:15laps was creeping up on us, and, uh,
01:14:17we tried to richen the fuel mixture
01:14:19to try to cool it down, and, uh, we started
01:14:21watching oil pressure go away, but, uh,
01:14:23we didn't catch it quite in time, but, uh,
01:14:25you know, Detroit next weekend.
01:14:27Thank you, Tony. Paul?
01:14:29Well, we should be less than a lap to green
01:14:31as they come off of the, uh,
01:14:33second turn. There are some
01:14:35scattered reports of light
01:14:37moisture. Everybody's afraid to say
01:14:39rain or showers. Well, it's because it
01:14:41isn't that yet. The drivers will have
01:14:43the best point of view. The onboard cameras,
01:14:45in fact, will show you if they
01:14:47get some moisture on the track itself,
01:14:49and as we come back, we will be
01:14:51completing the 178th lap.
01:14:53Now, you know that Emil's
01:14:55gonna have to push really hard now
01:14:57because with the impending possible rain,
01:14:59he's gonna have to. If he has a chance
01:15:01of getting a little out, he has to do it
01:15:03just in case it doesn't rain, Paul.
01:15:05Emerson Fittipaldi chases Al Unser, Jr.
01:15:07It is a battle for the lead in the
01:15:09Miller-Junion Draft 200.
01:15:11Deja vu. It was just
01:15:13like this a week ago at Indianapolis.
01:15:15These are the two men that are really
01:15:17making the season. They stand
01:15:191-2 in the championship, and they're
01:15:211-2 in this race right now.
01:15:23Same contestants, different engines.
01:15:25Back to the Elmore D engine for these
01:15:27two cars. You can watch little Al
01:15:29when he started the race, he ran a
01:15:31groove that would be more or less
01:15:33what he saw with his front end to
01:15:35disturb the air so it'd make it a little bit
01:15:37harder on Emil. And after he gets a little
01:15:39bit of distance like this, he goes back
01:15:41to what feels good to him for his normal groove.
01:15:43And they indicate that the yellow
01:15:45flag comes out. There it is.
01:15:47And that is for rain.
01:15:49So on the 180th lap,
01:15:51there you got a good idea
01:15:53of moisture building up
01:15:55on the camera on Michael Andretti's
01:15:57car, so we are under yellow
01:15:59now the third time of the day,
01:16:01and this time it is because
01:16:03a light shower has moved into
01:16:05the Milwaukee area here at the
01:16:07Wisconsin State Fairgrounds. We'll be back.
01:16:13We're under yellow.
01:16:15There are 17 laps to go
01:16:17in the race. Light shower
01:16:19in the area, not enough to really dampen
01:16:21the track surface heavily,
01:16:23and there is the possibility that we could go
01:16:25back to green flag racing.
01:16:27On the other hand, there is the
01:16:29possibility that within the same
01:16:31week, Allenser Jr.
01:16:33will win his second race
01:16:35under the yellow flag. So
01:16:37Allenser Jr. is in front,
01:16:39Emerson Fittipaldi just behind him.
01:16:41We watch this race
01:16:43in this season. The name Mario Andretti
01:16:45and racing have been synonymous
01:16:47for the past three decades.
01:16:49Our Sam Posey had a chance to talk to him
01:16:51about his illustrious career.
01:16:55For 30 years, his name has stood
01:16:57for speed. He is a racer
01:16:59to the core. Passionate,
01:17:01fierce, romantic, and realistic.
01:17:03On the overall, I've been very
01:17:05lucky.
01:17:07I think you could,
01:17:09as I say, here again
01:17:11and you could go back. Yeah, I wish I would have had a little
01:17:13more luck here or there. But what is
01:17:15luck? I mean, sometimes luck is
01:17:17being able to
01:17:19be around
01:17:21for a long period of time.
01:17:25I have so much to be thankful
01:17:27for. And really,
01:17:29that's the way I'm looking at
01:17:31the big picture of my entire career.
01:17:33The proudest moments
01:17:35in my career have been the times
01:17:37when I've been on the podium
01:17:39with my son
01:17:41or when I've won
01:17:43on a weekend where
01:17:45my other son,
01:17:47either Michael or Jeff, had won
01:17:49their own event, supporting event.
01:17:51Victories
01:17:53are victories, they're wonderful,
01:17:55but those
01:17:57are really probably the most precious
01:17:59trophies I have on my mantle.
01:18:03There have been times when
01:18:05yes, I should feel
01:18:07defeated, you know,
01:18:09if my son, my offspring
01:18:11all of a sudden is going
01:18:13by me. And
01:18:15the first reaction was that because
01:18:17you know, you're a competitor
01:18:19and all that sort of thing. Then
01:18:21you know, the
01:18:23second reaction was, well, I don't know,
01:18:25I did something
01:18:27really good. I knew
01:18:29retirement had to be somewhere.
01:18:31To be able to pick just the right
01:18:33time, I don't think
01:18:35is ever easy.
01:18:37Did I pick the right time? I'm not sure.
01:18:41At this point I just don't want to push it.
01:18:43I'd just like to be able to walk away
01:18:45while I'm still a factor, still competitive
01:18:47because
01:18:49I only derive satisfaction
01:18:51out of that. So
01:18:53for me just to ride and ride
01:18:55just for sake of riding,
01:18:57no way. That day is going to
01:18:59come when yes, perhaps
01:19:01I'm sure that I'm
01:19:03going to wish that
01:19:05I would still be going
01:19:07to the racetrack to be
01:19:09fitted up in the cockpit and
01:19:11be ready to drive
01:19:13that day. But
01:19:15again, I'm just trying
01:19:17so hard to be realistic that
01:19:19and realizing
01:19:21that those things just will not last forever.
01:19:25So many emotions from one of the
01:19:27greats of all time in this sport, Mario
01:19:29Andretti. And Paul Newman, you've been instrumental
01:19:31in Mario's career in recent years
01:19:33and I know there's disappointment today because that
01:19:35Penske team has made it like you're running
01:19:37for first in class. But reflect for a
01:19:39moment about what Mario Andretti
01:19:41has meant, not only to you and your team
01:19:43but to the world of motorsports.
01:19:45Oh nothing, it's just
01:19:47a privilege to be connected with him.
01:19:51I don't know, he certainly was snakebitten
01:19:53at Indianapolis
01:19:55and I guess he's got
01:19:57valve problems here.
01:20:01There
01:20:05there aren't many like Mario
01:20:07in racing and the same thing is true
01:20:09in film, so
01:20:11he's the Duke Wayne of the
01:20:15racing circuit.
01:20:17It's a great analogy. We've talked with Mario
01:20:19about his emotions in the final time at all
01:20:21of these tracks. Is it difficult for you with
01:20:23emotions when it comes to Mario?
01:20:25As you know, he's making this tour and you're making it
01:20:27with him? Yeah, it is.
01:20:29He's raced here since
01:20:31this is his 36th start.
01:20:35It's going to be difficult for him too, I suspect.
01:20:37Well, we appreciate a few comments
01:20:39and of course, we pay tribute to one of the greats
01:20:41Mario Andretti. Paul?
01:20:43Of course, Mario I think
01:20:45was the emotional favorite going into the Indy
01:20:47500 last week. Everyone was pulling
01:20:49for him. He was doing beautifully. He actually
01:20:51ran as high as third. He was fourth when he
01:20:53broke down on just lap 23
01:20:55with another one of those little $5
01:20:57parts. And it was really sad to see
01:20:59him go out that way. But in some ways
01:21:01of course, it was typical. That was the
01:21:03story of Mario at Indy.
01:21:05The racing champion's fire still burns
01:21:07in his heart as he makes his Arrivederci
01:21:09tour. And the fans are
01:21:11all surrounding him at every race.
01:21:13Say Mario, we wish you would stay. We'll be back.
01:21:18Sprint cars, NASCAR,
01:21:20Indy cars, through the years
01:21:22I've driven them all.
01:21:24One thing I've
01:21:26learned, no matter what you drive,
01:21:28you've got to take care of it. Haviland
01:21:30is the one. No other leading motor oil
01:21:32offers more complete protection to help
01:21:34your car run better, last longer.
01:21:36Even if you haven't been driving as long as Mario.
01:21:38There's an old Italian saying,
01:21:40you're cooking, you've got to use the right
01:21:42oil. Haviland Formula 3.
01:21:44Why add just any motor oil?
01:21:46Add more life to your car.
01:21:48The black
01:21:50tire marks in the pits, indications
01:21:52of action earlier, but now
01:21:54we continue slow with
01:21:56just 10 laps to go in this run here,
01:21:58but we are still under yellow.
01:22:00Al Unser Jr. is the leader
01:22:02of the race. The IndyCar
01:22:04safety team trucks are both out constantly
01:22:06checking the track. With Roger
01:22:08Penske, you talk about
01:22:10winning, Bobby Unser has scored
01:22:1211 wins and one at Indianapolis.
01:22:14Big Al, three wins, one
01:22:16at Indy, and Al Unser Jr.
01:22:18just this year, two wins
01:22:20including Indy.
01:22:22Is that an Unser graphic,
01:22:24or is that one for Penske, Bobby?
01:22:26Well, that's one for Penske, and I wish
01:22:28I could start all over again. The other guys are catching up.
01:22:30Let's go pit side,
01:22:32Jack Arood. Well, Paul, I've never
01:22:34ceased to amaze me about the organization
01:22:36of Team Penske. No sooner
01:22:38did it begin to rain, and Chuck Sprague
01:22:40sent out the word on the radio, break out
01:22:42the umbrellas, but Chuck, more
01:22:44importantly, got to have kind of mixed emotions
01:22:46right now with the rain. One car
01:22:48out in front, but you're calling the shots
01:22:50for Emerson Fittipaldi, and he's chomping
01:22:52at the bit. Yeah, he's
01:22:54out there rationalizing. He said,
01:22:56well, you know, the tires, they are slick, but
01:22:58there's no rooster tail yet.
01:23:00I just, for the sake of safety,
01:23:02we don't want to take any chances. I mean, the way
01:23:04it's coming down now... Well, I think we're going to get
01:23:06the answer right now. Let's go back track side.
01:23:08Well, they're getting ready at the
01:23:10starter stand, Jim Swintell,
01:23:12with a red flag and a
01:23:14checkered flag.
01:23:16The twin checkered flags are going to be
01:23:18displayed to Al
01:23:20Unser Jr., the way he won the
01:23:22Indianapolis 500 a week ago,
01:23:24and here it is today.
01:23:26They've decided they could not get the track
01:23:28to dry conditions within
01:23:30the remaining eight laps,
01:23:32and so Al Unser Jr.
01:23:34has won three
01:23:36in a row. Last time
01:23:38anybody won three in a row
01:23:40was Michael Andretti in 1991
01:23:42when he won Vancouver,
01:23:44then Ohio, and then Elkhart.
01:23:46Team Penske has done it once again,
01:23:48and for Team Penske, it's four in a row.
01:23:50And a one, two, three finish
01:23:52in Indianapolis in here,
01:23:54and look at this, Sam.
01:23:56Line abreast, finishing one, two,
01:23:58three. We have not seen
01:24:00this for many, many years. It's an
01:24:02incredible, historic moment. Look at that.
01:24:04They need to stick their chest out now
01:24:06because, like you said, Sam, you don't
01:24:08see that very often. That Penske
01:24:10has to be about the proudest guy
01:24:12that I could ever imagine.
01:24:14So with the Penske cars finishing
01:24:16first, second, and third, three abreast,
01:24:18leading the rest of the field around,
01:24:20we'll be back to talk with
01:24:22the winner, Al Unser Jr., right after this.
01:24:28Well, Al Unser Jr.
01:24:30is singing in the rain as he takes
01:24:32the win in the Miller Genuine Draft 200.
01:24:34Here's Jack Arood.
01:24:36Paul doing backup as Emerson Fittipaldi
01:24:38who finished second, and Paul Tracy, they've joined
01:24:40us all in victory lane. First of all, Al,
01:24:42congratulations. A three-peat.
01:24:44Now you've got three in a row.
01:24:46Yeah, I just want to thank my guys. You know,
01:24:48this team, with Paul
01:24:50and Emerson and all the guys, all the
01:24:52engineers, Roger giving us
01:24:54the best cars, Nigel Bennett designing
01:24:56them, I tell you, this is one
01:24:58heck of a treat to drive for this race team.
01:25:00Emerson Fittipaldi, I know
01:25:02you've got to have mixed emotions when the rain came,
01:25:04but have you ever been part of a
01:25:06three-car tandem across the start-
01:25:08finish line for a checkered flag before?
01:25:10Yeah, I mean, that's fantastic. General did, again,
01:25:12a great job. I'm very pleased.
01:25:14All the Marlboro Team Penske crew, we had
01:25:16a fantastic work. I mean, one, two, three, what else
01:25:18do we need? And then I'm looking for
01:25:20India next year again. And how about you,
01:25:22Paul Tracy? So many tough times
01:25:24in the early going, now after
01:25:26Indianapolis, you come back for a solid
01:25:28third-place finish. I'm pretty happy.
01:25:30It's great to see everybody's up, and
01:25:32I had a great finish, one, two, three, with the Marlboro
01:25:34crew, and just wish my car had handled
01:25:36better, but Al and Emerson put on a good
01:25:38show, and I was just sitting back, waiting
01:25:40for the checker to come out. Tell you what,
01:25:42Paul Page, I've covered a lot of races, but
01:25:44I've never seen anything like this.
01:25:46Now, Al, let me ask you one question, though.
01:25:48On one of the restarts, it looked as if
01:25:50you were trying to hold Emerson back
01:25:52just a little bit. Were you playing some
01:25:54games with your teammate, or did maybe Uncle
01:25:56Bobby tell you a little something about the Milwaukee Mile?
01:25:58Well, I tell you,
01:26:00you know, Dad and Uncle Bobby told
01:26:02me a lot about this place, and
01:26:04you know, we were just trying to get the jump
01:26:06in, and I really didn't think there was going
01:26:08to be another yellow, and
01:26:10so, you know, we jumped, and we got
01:26:12on it early, and then I had to do
01:26:14it all over again, and he
01:26:16was more ready for it then.
01:26:18So many people were worried that you would get teamed
01:26:20up with Penske in your career. What do
01:26:22you think the limit is for Al Unser Jr.?
01:26:24Well, I don't know, you know,
01:26:26we're just looking for the number one on the Marlboro
01:26:28car, and, you know,
01:26:30we're just trying to get that done.
01:26:32Gary? Well, with Michael Andretti,
01:26:34Michael, how frustrating is it to basically
01:26:36be running for first in class when you
01:26:38watch those Penske tires in the day they had today?
01:26:40It was tough watching them go
01:26:42biased on the outside. It seemed like every other lap
01:26:44there was a red and white car going biased,
01:26:46but, you know, my hat's
01:26:48off to them. They just did a great job.
01:26:50They seemed to work together well, get
01:26:52all the setups together, and
01:26:54you know, they did a good job. Well, we
01:26:56appreciate your efforts. We'll see you in Detroit next week
01:26:58as we go back up to fall for final standings.
01:27:00And, of course, we'll have coverage of
01:27:02the run at Detroit here on ABC Sports.
01:27:04Here are the unofficial results
01:27:06with the Penske team at the
01:27:08top of the order. Al Hunter Jr.
01:27:10led 156 of
01:27:12191 laps. They cut it short
01:27:14by 9 miles. And what does
01:27:16that all do to the point standings? Well, we'll
01:27:18take a look at the PPG points
01:27:20in a race that only saw
01:27:22Stephan Johansson fall out.
01:27:24Al Hunter Jr. has a very strong
01:27:26lead in PPG points now,
01:27:28but then once again, it's still very
01:27:30early in the season as
01:27:32the Penske cars finish 1,
01:27:342, and 3 on the
01:27:36Milwaukee mile in the Miller Genuine Draft
01:27:38200. I'm Paul Page for
01:27:40Bobby Hunter, Sam Posey, Jack Maroud, and
01:27:42Gary Gerald. We'll see you next
01:27:44week in Detroit. So
01:27:46long for now.
