00:00Patrick Mahomes, the Kansas City Chiefs superstar, their quarterback, their Super Bowl MVP, has had some family issues earlier this year.
00:08And now we've got some more information about his father, Patrick Mahomes Sr., and that DUI that he got.
00:14Yeah, who was a professional athlete himself, actually, Charles, a major league baseball player.
00:18That's right, he was a baseball player.
00:19Yeah, but he was stopped in Tyler, Texas on February 3rd.
00:22Cops believed that he was driving under the influence.
00:25And this was the week before the Super Bowl.
00:28Super Bowl's February 11th, so eight days before the big game.
00:31Right.
00:32And Patrick Mahomes Sr., as he was in the back of the police car, Charles, one last-ditch effort to get out of the arrest.
00:42This is the camera that the police have in the back of the car.
00:46Right.
00:47New Jersey Sports got this video, and yeah, Patrick Sr. wanted to make sure that the officers understood who he was and who his son was.
00:58My son is getting ready to play in the f***ing Super Bowl, okay?
01:01Yes, I know.
01:02No, just listen to me.
01:03Uh-huh.
01:04I am not drunk, I promise you.
01:07Okay.
01:08I've had some drinks.
01:09Uh-huh.
01:10But he can't have this right now.
01:13Okay, sir.
01:14This can't, listen, this can't happen.
01:16Who is your son?
01:17Patrick Mahomes.
01:18Okay.
01:19I'm doing interviews five or six a day, and then now this s*** is going to be on the news, which is going to f*** him and probably f*** him up.
01:30He probably won't win the Super Bowl, but that's fine.
01:32Okay, winning the Super Bowl isn't really the important issue there.
01:36No, they did win, by the way.
01:37But it is interesting that he was, and they won anyway.
01:38Yeah.
01:40But interesting that he was very cognizant of the fact that this is going to be a big deal for Patrick.
01:45Big news.
01:46And he was concerned about that.
01:47Yeah, it probably advised him to not have driven drunk then, and he, by the way.
01:52Did he?
01:53Yeah.
01:54So what was the end result in the case?
01:56So the resolution was authorities claimed that he had a .23 BAC, and if you're familiar, Patrick Mahomes Sr., this is not the first time he's been accused of driving drunk.
02:04He's actually the third or more, according to authorities.
02:07So they charged him with a felony, and he was able to reach a plea deal with prosecutors that essentially kept him out of jail for a while.
02:12He had to do a 10-day stint in jail, and then he's on probation for five years.
02:17Now, if he messes up in the next five years, it's really – he could spend a long time in prison, up to 10 years.
02:23And by the way, .23, that is more than two and a half times over the legal limit.
02:29It should be noted, though, he said after the sentencing hearing where he was sentenced to probation that he is now sober.
02:35He hasn't had a drink since this arrest, and he said he called the arrest an eye-opener for him.
02:40So it looks like he's kind of getting the straight and narrow now.
02:42I would think so.
02:43In fact, you could almost see the eye-opening happen once he was in the back of the car and he realized how this is going to impact his son.
02:51Right.
02:52The last thing you want to be doing.
02:53He loves his son.
02:54I don't think he wants to do that.
02:55Hi.
02:56My name is Elizabeth.
02:57I am in Pasadena, California.
03:00And I have to agree, name-dropping your son is already pretty out there in the middle of a DWI, but to add the Super Bowl in that is just as pretty – it's pretty wild.
03:12So thankfully this was kind of the thing he needed to try and get him back to living his best life and being there fully for his son.
03:19And, you know, interesting to remember, Patrick didn't, you know, try to avoid the topic that week leading up to the Super Bowl.
03:27He was aware of it and he did address it once and then got back to football.
03:30Yeah.
