00:00All right, I think we're good. Hey guys
00:02I'm Tom the Tech Jab and this is actually being shot on the new iPhone 14 Pro Max in
00:06Cinematic mode in the new 4k resolution because if you remember on the 13 if we go back
00:12Which I'm now shooting on you can see it's a little bit fuzzier because it's limited to 1080p and also you only get the 30
00:18FPS option which is not particularly cinematic. So let's go back to the 14 and back to the 14 Pro Max
00:24So you can see it's a little bit sharper. We have a wider field of view
00:26It does look nicer. And of course also we have both 30 and 24 FPS options
00:30So the improved cinematic mode is just one of the upgrades
00:34But as someone who has been using this the 13 Pro Max as their main
00:38I hate to say daily driver for the best part of the last year except when I've been testing other phones
00:43Naturally, I'm curious how much better this 14 Pro Max is
00:46So while I will be doing a sort of fuller more in-depth long time review in a few weeks
00:51I do have a few thoughts
00:52I want to share about the 14 Pro Max so far and if you do enjoy the video
00:56then a cheeky like and subscribe will be lovely and I can tell you straight away that if you are buying one of these is
01:02Going to sting a little bit more than usual as here in the UK
01:05The Pro Max is a hundred pounds more expensive than last year now starting at eleven ninety nine and going all the way up to
01:131749 if you really want to show off with a new one terabyte model and to make things worse the US haven't had a price
01:19increase and that's
01:21150 pounds iPhone 14 Pro Max 1 terabyte, which I actually have here is only
01:261600 in the US although that is before sales tax
01:29So outside the US we've had a bit of a price hike and it may make you reconsider
01:33Whether you want or can even afford one of these especially with the cost of living right now
01:38Now by this point, you've probably already watched a dozen videos on your iPhone
01:42So, you know, what's up?
01:43But to summarize quickly we get this very nifty new dynamic island pill shaped notch. The bezels are a tiny bit thinner
01:50There's also two new colors. We have midnight black and deep purple. Although I have the silver one here
01:55We get the new a16 chip
01:57Which is a little bit faster and also unlocks a couple of new features
02:01The screen gets quite a bit brighter for HDR video and if you're outdoors
02:05There's bigger and faster camera sensors including a new 48 megapixel main lens with a new two times optical zoom option
02:13Also Apple's deep fusion camera processing tech magic wizardry thing is now called the photonic engine
02:19Video gets the improved 4k cinematic mode as well as a new super stable action mode
02:24The selfie camera has a wider aperture and now supports autofocus
02:28Apple says the battery should last about an hour longer than last year and there's also a couple of new safety features crash detection and
02:35Satellite SOS, although the latter of which is only available in the US and Canada for now
02:39And of course, it ships running iOS 16 with the new iPhone 14 Pro series exclusively getting this new always-on display
02:47Which takes advantage of the new 1 Hertz refresh rate, so it shouldn't drain your battery too much
02:53Now side-by-side with last year's 13 Pro Max the 14 slimmer bezels and smaller notch
02:59I think do add up to make the screen feel a bit more spacious and less cramped if you will
03:04It's not a night and day difference, but more obvious than I had expected
03:07But what really jumps out is this new dynamic island and while people love to call anything new a gimmick and certainly it's not a
03:14Reason to upgrade to the 14 pros by itself. I think it's neat
03:18Although despite the new pill shaped cutout being 30% smaller than the previous notch in reality
03:24It doesn't make much difference as that extra slice of screen that you get above it isn't particularly useful
03:28And actually this new cutout does sit slightly further down on the screen
03:33But aesthetically, I think it looks a lot more modern and also it is one of the few ways that you can actually
03:38Differentiate that you have the new one versus the old one
03:41Which is important to some people and it does add some quite unique functionality
03:45It's kind of like an always on top notification bar widget thing with some very nice animations downsides
03:51Well firstly, it seems odd that a single tap opens the app, but then a long press expands the widget
03:57I feel like it should be the other way around and also there's a bit of a reachability issue on the Pro Max's biggest
04:02Screen any interaction including accepting a call is now a two-handed job
04:06One of my concerns though is that my mucky fingerprints as I'm interacting the dynamic island are gonna smudge the front camera lens
04:13And when I was taking pictures last night at the bar, I did notice there's some flaring going on
04:18I then sort of cleaned it with my t-shirt and it went away
04:21So I am experiencing a little bit of that and kind of just instinctively now. I'm regularly cleaning the lens with my shirt
04:28Elsewhere, it's all very much the same as last year. We're still rocking that lightning port
04:32The only other noticeable change is this new always-on display or AOD which quite nicely transitions into the lock screen
04:39So it does feel more intuitive and streamlined compared to every other phone that just goes black and then pops up with a clock or an image
04:46Although at the moment, there's not a lot of customization, but future iOS updates are due to add more
04:51So I went out to dinner last night and while I know it's never good form to put your phone on the table
04:56You know people do some weird stuff with their phones, right?
04:58And while I know it's never good form to put your phone on the table, you know people do sometimes if you're in the office
05:03And it's on your desk, but one thing I have started to notice is that the always-on display is too bright, too obvious
05:09It's taking me a minute to realize the screen is off. Well in AOD mode
05:13So I keep them pressing the power button to fully turn it off, but then it turns it on
05:17Now you can disable the AOD if you prefer which I might actually do because right now I find myself just flipping the phone over
05:25Now at the opposite end of that dimmed lock screen, we have this new higher brightness
05:30In fact, this is the brightest phone you can buy
05:34HDR video is bumped up to 1600 nits and outdoor brightness is now a whopping 2000
05:40Although undoubtedly keeping the screen this bright will drain your battery faster
05:46Now the very first thing you should do when you get your new iPhone is put a case on it
05:50Why? Because, well, this. This is why. I learned the hard way
05:54So I've teamed up with Casetify who also sent over this lovely box of goodies
05:59From tempered glass screen protectors to lens covers and of course a few cases
06:04Now I have the iPhone 14 Pro Max, so I'm going to use this which is one of Casetify's new Ultra Impact cases
06:10There's also new Impact and Bounce cases as well
06:13And with a new twister design that includes their EcoShock technology, we get 20% more protection
06:19In fact, the Ultra Impact case I have here gives me up to 11.5 feet of drop protection
06:25We have the 5X mil standard, it's MagSafe compatible of course
06:29And actually it's made with 65% recycled and plant-based material
06:33Can't believe I'm doing this, these just arrived this morning
06:36Here we go
06:39Oh
06:45It's a little bit scuffed on the bumpers but that's kind of the whole point
06:49It did its job and not a crack on the case or importantly the screen
06:54That'll do
06:55Definitely check out Casetify's new iPhone 14 collection and I'll leave a link in the description below
07:00Okay, let's talk about this camera
07:02So we have the usual three lenses with the main lens which we've got now
07:05We can pull out to the ultra-wide which is also improved
07:08In fact, the new photonic engine should give us improved low light on all the lenses versus last year
07:13But as you can see if we go up to two times, that's new
07:16So it's cropping in or at least using the central 12 megapixels of the new 48 megapixel main lens
07:22You can also punch into the usual three times if you want
07:25And then you can pinch in all the way up to 15 times
07:27Which I have noticed is a little bit sharper actually than last year
07:30But still not ideal compared to the competition
07:33Bring it back, too much, too much, too much
07:35I think we'd have all liked a bit of a longer zoom as well
07:37Now switching to portrait mode
07:39And if you want to jump to two times again
07:41What we now have is foreground blur
07:43Which to be honest I thought we already had
07:45But essentially if I put my hand out here
07:47It's still focusing on my face
07:49But you have this nice foreground blur
07:52Of course this ultra-wide camera if we punch back out also doubles as a macro
07:56So I can then use my little guy again and come right up to the camera
08:02It is one of the best if not the best macro cameras you can get
08:06With a 15cm focal length
08:08So that's pretty handy as well
08:10But mostly it's about the new sensors, the wider apertures
08:13And also the new photonic engine which is doing its magic behind the scenes
08:17So let's look at some photos side by side
08:19And see if it is much of an upgrade over last year
08:21And before I tell you which is which
08:23Can you see much of a difference?
08:25And also do you prefer one over the other?
08:27Well somewhat predictably I put the new 14 Pro Max's photo on the right
08:31Did you guess correctly? Let me know in the comments
08:34So there are definitely a few trends that I'm seeing
08:36If you look at Sarah's face here
08:38You can see on the right with the iPhone 14 Pro Max
08:40It's more detailed, it's sharper
08:42The colours aren't as warm
08:44And altogether it's just more realistic
08:46Across the board I'm noticing an improvement in white balance
08:50You can see here the castle is a more natural grey
08:53Whereas on the 13 it's got a bluey tint to it
08:55Now in good light, going between the three main lenses
08:58There isn't an awful lot in it
09:00Although zoomed in with a 3x telephoto
09:02The 14 is a lot sharper
09:04Dare I say over sharpened
09:06Which is a trend I'm seeing as well
09:08I mean look at this, at first glance not a whole lot in it
09:10But then if you look at the word and the fine detail on the flowers
09:14The 14 does come across as more detailed
09:16But it looks like they've just turned the sharpness up to 11
09:20I love this photo
09:22And there isn't really that much between them
09:24Although you can see that blurry bokeh effect
09:26Is more prominent both in the foreground
09:28And the background of his ears
09:30And the top of his hair which I think looks more natural
09:32So my takeaway with the main cameras
09:35Is that we are seeing a noticeable improvement
09:37Particularly in low light
09:39Particularly in terms of white balance
09:41Colour accuracy and detail
09:43I do think shots are over sharpened
09:45I hope Apple could maybe turn that down a little bit
09:47And I'm definitely getting Samsung vibes
09:49From the aesthetic now as opposed to the flatter
09:51Warmer, less realistic look
09:53That we've had with iPhones for quite a few years now
09:55Switching to the selfie
09:57I actually kind of prefer
09:59The warmer look of the 13 Pro Max here
10:01But also you can see the 14 is once again
10:03More detailed and sharper
10:05Possibly too sharp
10:07Honestly if I changed the 14 Pro Max
10:09Text to Galaxy S22 Ultra
10:11I think you'd probably believe me
10:13It is quite a different look that they're going for now
10:15With the 14 series
10:19Okay let's talk about video
10:21While there were rumours that we might get 8K
10:23That never really materialised
10:25In fact we haven't had any change in resolution options
10:27Here except for that new 4K cinematic mode
10:29Now in good light
10:31There isn't really much between them
10:33Although switching between lenses
10:35I'm not sure if you can see that as well
10:37It does look noticeably smoother
10:39On the 14 series
10:41It was already very good on the 13
10:43But actually I do find the transition while filming
10:45Is now smoother
10:47But sadly you still can't pause and resume video
10:49You can't switch between the front and rear cameras
10:51Or vice versa while filming
10:53You can see here again like the photos
10:55The 13 struggling with that white balance
10:57And the colour of the castle
10:59The blue of the sky is overwhelming everything else
11:01The colours on the 14 are much more natural
11:03And true to life
11:15Okay let's do a little side by side video
11:17Both shooting at 4K 30
11:19This is my studio
11:21Nice and clean and tidy as you can tell
11:23But hopefully
11:25If I just sort of walk around a little bit
11:27You'll get an idea if the video quality is any different
11:29The stabilisation
11:31The colour which I'm noticing seems to be
11:33Quite a big difference this year with the 14 series
11:35So let's have a little
11:37Close up on my camera
11:39I shoot usually with the a7S III
11:41This is my
11:43Big TV
11:45It's a 35 inch LG
11:47I've got this very cool table
11:49You may have spotted this in a few videos
11:51It's called a Sisyphus
11:53Basically it's RGB on the outside
11:55And it draws patterns
11:57With a little metal ball that goes around inside
11:59This is my usual desk setup
12:01Again nice and tidy
12:03I actually have been shooting mostly over here today
12:05In fact this is the edit
12:07For the very video you're watching
12:09Which has some work to be done
12:11But so far
12:13What do you think of the video?
12:15Are you seeing much difference?
12:17Side by side on the screen doesn't seem to be
12:19All that different
12:21What do you think?
12:23Honestly I'm struggling a little bit
12:25To see the difference
12:27I would say there's maybe a touch less noise
12:29On the 14, it's a tiny bit more detail perhaps
12:31But it's all very minor
12:33And kind of hard to see
12:35Even side by side, I'm sure you'll agree
12:37And actually if I jump to the 3x lens on both
12:39While the 13 is noisier
12:41It's more detailed
12:43It seems to be worse on the 14
12:45Although we do get less noise
12:47Which is a bit odd
12:49And finally we have action mode
12:51Which you enable by tapping the little running icon man
12:53At the top of the camera app
12:55And that basically drops the resolution down to 2.8K
12:57And gives you much more stable video
12:59Which is ideal if you're doing some POV shots
13:01Or you're running after your kids
13:03It's nothing really new for Android phones
13:05But for iPhones, well it gives you another option
13:07Now what about the A16 chip in here?
13:09Which only the Pro and the Pro Max get
13:11Is it really that much faster?
13:13Well Apple says the A16 is 10% faster
13:15And 20% more efficient than the A15
13:17And that does roughly tally with my results
13:19In Geekbench and 3DMark
13:21Where you're getting slightly higher scores
13:23And also specifically here in 3DMark
13:25You can see the 14 used less battery
13:27During the same test
13:29So a slight improvement
13:31But then these tests don't really give you
13:33The full picture of the A16
13:35We've got a new Neural Engine
13:37For AI and camera processing
13:39A new Display Engine
13:41Which unlocks the screen's higher brightness
13:43And also the new 1-120Hz ProMotion
13:45Which means that lock screen can be really efficient
13:47In real terms, this is the most powerful phone you can buy
13:49And also generally games are better optimized
13:51On the Apple App Store
13:53Versus the Google Play Store
13:55For a more fragmented Android ecosystem
13:57But what about battery life?
13:59Well interestingly, the new 14 Pro Max
14:01Actually has an ever so slightly better battery life
14:03Compared to last year's 13 Pro Max
14:05But really it's going to come down to
14:07The A16's better efficiency
14:09How much that always-on-display drains your battery
14:11Also if you're running around outside
14:13With that Max 2000 nit brightness a whole bunch
14:15How you use it will have the biggest impact
14:17So far it seems to be just shy
14:19Of what I was getting on my 13 Pro Max
14:21We may see some improvement over time
14:23As the AI recognizes your patterns of usage
14:25And we get more software updates
14:27But still, the 14 Pro Max
14:29Is one of the best phones you can get
14:31For battery life
14:33Although I must say
14:35I had hoped we'd see a boost in charging times
14:37As it still takes a good half hour
14:39To reach 50%
14:41Samsung and Apple really need to catch up
14:43On paper
14:45There are a lot of upgrades
14:47There's a lot to talk about
14:49But in reality, it all feels very familiar
14:51Especially if you've used an iPhone
14:53For the last 2 or 3 years
14:55Let me know what you make of the 14 Pro Max
14:57And also this cinematic mode
14:59I hope you enjoyed this video
15:01Thank you so much for watching
15:03And I'll see you next time, right here, on The Tech Chap
