00:00I'm definitely the sweatiest, palest person on this beach, by a long way, but I'm here
00:20on Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, first time in the country actually, first
00:25time in South America even, which is very exciting for me, to test this, the Oppo Find
00:29X7 Ultra.
00:30Now, this did launch a couple of months ago in China, we've also had a few quite big updates
00:35to it since, improving the camera, and that's basically what I'm here to test.
00:38Oppo brought myself and a few other creators out here to Rio, and also we're going to go
00:42to Manaus, in the middle of the Amazon rainforest, to put this to the test, see how it compares
00:47to some of its rivals, this is the S24 Ultra, and just spend a bit of time with it, because
00:51we have a very impressive quad, 50 megapixel setup, we've got two zoom lenses, on paper
00:57this is like one of the most impressive camera phones you can buy.
01:00It's a beautiful country, a sweaty subject, let's see what this can do.
01:07For a bit of context, I've shot over a thousand photos and videos on the X7 Ultra, Oppo's flagship
01:31phone, and yes, I do realise that no one in the history of time has ever wanted to sit
01:35through someone's holiday snaps, but stick around, not only for me losing my drone at
01:40the bottom of the Amazon river, but I've come away genuinely very impressed by this camera.
01:51And so a big thank you to Oppo for sending me the X7 Ultra to play with, and also inviting
01:55me on this incredible adventure.
01:59And starting out in Rio, this is the famous Copacabana beach, and in this blistering sun
02:03you really can't get better lighting conditions to show off Oppo's second generation 1-inch
02:08sensor on the X7 Ultra in all of its glory.
02:11And actually, another one of the upgrades with the X7 Ultra is that the glass is now
02:1550% less reflective, which is ideal for shots like this, with the sun reflecting off the
02:20sea.
02:21And to be honest, with such harsh sunlight, I'm surprised how well it handles the exposure,
02:25particularly in the darker areas, like this restaurant in the shade on the left.
02:29And Oppo is using a dual exposure here as part of the X7 Ultra's hypertone image engine,
02:34helping to give us this wider dynamic range.
02:36To be fair though, most cameras would do well in this lighting, so to add a bit of context,
02:40let's bring in the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra.
02:43And while in good light, it can be kind of hard to pick them apart, just look at this
02:47portrait shot using the 3x telephoto.
02:50But which do you prefer?
02:51I think personally, I quite like the more natural warm tones of the Oppo, although the
02:55Samsung does seem to offer a little bit more detail in her face.
03:11The big man himself, Christ the Redeemer.
03:13In fact, here's two of him, and you can see the Oppo is leaning towards a more contrasty,
03:18deeper shadow look.
03:19I also never realised until I punched in with the telephoto lenses that Christ the Redeemer
03:22has this almost tile-like texture.
03:25But the views from up here are just insane.
03:28This is shot at 4K60 on the X7 Ultra, and while I do think Oppo have fallen foul of
03:33focusing too much on photography and not enough on videography in the past, I'm very happy
03:37to report that videos have had a big upgrade this year as well.
03:40Okay, so 0.6x, 1x, 2x, 3x, 6x, that's not bad, look at that, can we go further?
03:5610x, 18x.
04:05One thing that's sort of jumping out at me as myself and the other creators on this trip
04:09are using this phone, is just how good the portraits are, and just how natural it looks,
04:14particularly if you use the 3x or the 6x optical zooms.
04:18This is something about the colour science with the House of Blood partnership in colour,
04:22but also the relatively big sizes of the sensors on the telephoto periscope zooms as well.
04:27You can just get some really crisp, professional looking shots that you just can't on most
04:32other phones that you can hold in your hand.
04:35Good morning, it is day two in Rio de Janeiro, and we are at the Salon Steppe.
04:39The first thing that struck me was that you see sort of Instagram pictures of this, well
04:45I guess you could do the Instagram of surreality.
04:47This is a Wednesday morning about 10am, and we have to use the AI eraser tool I think
04:52to get rid of some of these people.
04:54In fact, let's just give it a go, Connor here with his Arsenal shirt is kind of ruining
04:58the background.
04:59So firing up the AI eraser tool, which is built into the photo gallery app, I can either
05:03draw around him or paint an area, and after a few seconds the AI will generative fill
05:08the area and remove those pesky photo bombers.
05:11Okay, I found some shade, let's talk about the specs on the X7 Ultra.
05:18We've got a 50 megapixel quad camera setup, so every lens, the main, the ultrawide, and
05:23the two telephoto periscopes all have the same resolution.
05:26And one of the things I'm obviously trying to do is maintain a sort of consistent quality
05:31colour detail for the different lenses.
05:32There isn't like a weak point.
05:33In fact, they're calling this the first quad main camera system, which is obviously their
05:38marketing spiel, but we also obviously have the one inch sensor on the main lens using
05:43the Sony LYT900.
05:44There's only a handful of phones that give us one inch sensors.
05:47Now you can also see here, the two telephotos are periscope lenses, so we have a three times
05:53optical and a six times, but then you can go even further from that, and actually following
05:58a couple of recent updates, some quite big updates to the camera, they've actually optimised
06:02the 10 up to 13.3 times focal range, so up to 300mm.
06:08So you really can very quickly get up to quite a long focal range with this.
06:12It's very good.
06:13So this is the ultrawide, 0.6 times, one, two, three, three times optical that is, six
06:22times optical, and that is actually impressively smooth as well, and I'm recording at 4K60,
06:30switching through all the different lenses, which you can't do on a lot of phones actually,
06:35especially at this resolution, and you can do that in the Dolby Vision HDR mode.
06:39I'm also very happy to report that finally, we have 4K60 on the selfie camera.
06:44For years I felt like it was topping out at 4K30, but no, there we go.
06:49And this is the wide mode, it's 0.8 times, this is one time, and you've also got two
06:54times.
06:55We'll stick to that for my little vlogs.
06:57The other thing I'm noticing is that it does actually blur out the highlights quite a bit
07:02there.
07:03It's exposing through me and I'm in the shadow, but it is pretty bright over there, but I
07:07do find myself actually switching round to use the rear camera, it's just like flipping
07:11it in my hand for a better shot, but that's the same with any phone really.
07:16As I say, they have also partnered with Hasselblad again, so we're getting their sort of colour
07:20science and expertise, we're getting the camera UI with that shutter button click and the
07:24orange here, but we also get some of the usual modes that you get with an Oppo, including
07:28X-Pan, which I think is really underrated.
07:31You can't get a bad shot using the X-Pan mode because you have this really wide aspect
07:35ratio and with this more retro-y colour filters and the black and white mode, you can take
07:39this anywhere and get some really artsy looking shots.
07:43There's always a crowd watching the sunset here, which is pretty spectacular looking
07:46across Ipanema Beach here in Rio, and once it gets fully dark, the big lights come out
07:51and the party vibes kick in.
08:01Both phones do a really good job, and actually the shutter lag, which is often a big limitation
08:14particularly in lower light, isn't too bad at all, with the moving ball here slightly
08:19more in focus on the Oppo.
08:20OK, it's 2am, we've just arrived in Manaus, we're getting a boat to the hotel thing, which
08:30I think is on a pond spoon on the river.
08:33I feel like we've been kidnapped.
08:37Well to be honest, if I had been kidnapped, I probably would have been OK with it because
08:41just look at this view.
08:44I am about 30 minutes outside of Manaus at this Amazon Rainforest Hotel Barge thing.
08:50I never imagined when I started this Tech Chap channel that I would be here in the bloody
08:54rainforest taking pictures with a phone.
08:57So I've gone from snapping photos of posy tourists, myself included, to bullet ants,
09:02which apparently have one of the most painful bites in the world.
09:05And there we have something on fire, but also just look how the X7 Ultra captures that thick
09:10velvety smoke.
09:11I've never seen something burning look so good.
09:14This is an Amazon original production.
09:19And to be honest, I didn't take pictures of much else because I was too busy trying to
09:23not get heatstroke and also bitten by a million mozzies.
09:27But one of the best experiences was jumping on a boat at night and seeing what we could
09:30find, including these baby Cayman crocodiles.
09:37And that is nearly it.
09:38We're leaving the Amazon Hotel.
09:42Not the most secure little entrance and exit, but we're getting on a boat now.
09:47We're almost done.
09:48Thank you for sticking with me.
09:50It's our last day in Brazil and we went off exploring a bit of the Amazon River.
09:54I'm looking like massive tourists as I waved to the locals passing by, but it was fascinating
09:59to capture the homes, the people, the life.
10:02And the thing is, while I've spent a lot of this video talking about the X7 Ultra specs
10:05and 1-inch sensors and its hyper image engine and different modes and settings, the fact
10:10is I've captured some stunning shots with this, videos as well.
10:13And it has all been in auto mode, point and shoot, and no edits or filters either.
10:18But if you do fancy tinkering, then swipe over to master mode.
10:21This is essentially the pro mode up to full resolution, 50 megapixels, 16 bit.
10:25You can tinker with all the settings and this Hasselblad master mode is designed to match
10:28the aesthetic of the Hasselblad X2D-100C.
10:30So if you know what you're doing, you can get a proper professional look out of this.
10:35The biggest problem with the X7 Ultra though, is that you just can't buy it.
10:38Unfortunately, this is the China model.
10:40Oppo sent this as a review device for me to play with and I did have to go and download
10:43the Play Store and use APKs and make it basically non-China.
10:47So you can import it or, you know, there's a small chance that they will launch this
10:50in other markets.
10:51Hopefully, we see future Oppo phones, perhaps the X8 Ultra later in the year, we'll have
10:55to see.
10:56The combination of the sensor size, the processing, that Hasselblad aesthetic, Oppo have done
11:00a fantastic job with the Find X7 Ultra.
11:04So I hope you enjoyed watching this as much as I did making it.
11:06A huge thanks to Oppo for this, well, oppo-tunity.
11:10Any questions, drop a comment below and I'll see you next time right here on The Tech Chap.
